Externships are an important part of a student’s educational experience in working towards a rewarding career in health care. Medical Office Specialist (MOS)

Students learn the following curriculum: medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; duties of a medical administrative assistant; BLS/CPR; professionalism in health care; insurance and billing, HIPAA and office skills. Students are required to complete a 160-hour, or four weeks, onsite externship in a real health care facility.

Medical Scribe Specialist (MSS)

Students learn computer skills, coding and documentation, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, HIPAA and more. Students are required to complete 160 hours, or four weeks, of externship onsite in a medical office.

Coding Specialist (CCA)

This AHIMA-approved program teaches students coding, billing, insurance, HIPAA, CPT codes as well as ICD9, ICD10 and basic sciences. An onsite

externship consists of 40 hours, or one week, in a coding department.

Medical Assistant (MA)

Students learn phlebotomy, waived testing, medical administration, HIPAA, infection control, disposal of contaminated items and how to sterilize medical instruments. They instruct patients about medications and special diets; prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician; assist in minor procedures; telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy; draw blood, triage, take vital signs, perform electrocardiograms, remove sutures and change dressings. Students are required to complete160 hours, or four weeks of externship experience.

Dialysis Technician

Students learn the following curriculum plus 408 hours of clinical externship: professionalism in health care; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology review; principles of dialysis; dialysis procedures and documentation; possible complications of dialysis; water treatment and dialysate preparation; vital signs and triage; infection control and safety/HIPAA.

Phlebotomy

Students learn the theoretical and practical knowledge of how to become a phlebotomist. The course covers establishing a professional relationship with the patient; anatomy and physiology; medical terminology; selecting and preparing the venipuncture site; collecting specimens; donor patients; preparing and maintaining equipment; and the health, safety and legal aspects of the occupation. “Live” sticks are performed. Students receive 60 hours of classroom instruction and a 120-hour clinical externship.
