Breast cancer is the second most commontype of cancer among American women. Onein eight women will be diagnosed with it inher lifetime. That statistic implies that morepeople than not will be touched by breast can-cer's impact - chances are you know someonewho had the disease.
"The prevalence of breast cancer makes itvery likely most people at least personallyknow of someone who has had the disease,"says Janelle Hail, a breast cancer survivor andcofounder and CEO of the National BreastCancer Foundation, Inc. (NCBF). "Whatpeople may not be as aware of is the fact thatearly detection of breast cancer, in its firststage, can ensure a five-year survival rate of 98percent. Stage two breast canceralso has a very high five-yearsurvival rate of 88 percent."
No one is certain if breastcancer can be prevented, butwomen can take steps to reducetheir risk of developing the dis-ease, and improve their chances of surviving it.Preventative steps include getting regular exer-cise, maintaining a healthy diet and weight, reducing alcohol intake and quitting smoking.
Women of every age should do a monthlybreast self-exam. The American College ofObstetricians and Gynecologists and theAmerican Medical Association both recom-mend women begin getting yearly mammo-grams starting at age 40. Discovering a lumpthrough a self-exam or mammogram does notnecessarily mean a woman has cancer; eightout of 10 lumps are benign, or noncancerous. But the only way to know for sure is to con-sult a doctor.
"To help women meet the challenge ofdetecting breast cancer early, NBCF has creat-ed the Early Detection Plan," says Hail. "TheEarly Detection Plan reminds women toschedule their mammograms, clinical breast
exams, and self breast-exams. It takes just 60seconds to create, but it's helping save the livesof thousands of women across the country."
At www.mypinkplan.com, women canfind an interactive online tool to create a cus-tomized Early Detection Plan using e-mails,text messages, RSS feeds and/or calendars forclinical and self-exam reminders. The websiteis the result of a partnership between theNBCF and Procter & Gamble's (P&G)GIVE HOPE program, which is designed toeducate women about breast cancer in thehope of saving lives.
P&G brands from Swiffer and Tide toDowny, Olay and others, will also make adonation to the NBCF when shoppers
redeem special coupons thatwill be available in Sept. 26and Oct. 10 GIVE HOPEbrandSAVER coupon bookletsavailable in 55 million news-papers around the country.Visit www.mypinkplan.com to
learn more. You can find a list of newspapersthat contain brandSAVER coupons by log-ging on to www.pgeverydaysolutions.comand clicking on the brandSAVER link at thetop of the page.
Funds from the donation will help theNBCF finance education programs acrossthe country. It's an effort that can help savelives, says Carrie Ann Inaba, a judge on"Dancing with the Stars." Inaba's dedicationto the cause stems from personal experience.
"I've seen the importance of earlydetection firsthand when my mother wasdiagnosed with breast cancer three yearsago," Inaba says. "She was lucky tohave caught it early and her canceris in remission. I hope otherwomen will hear my story andlearn more about early detectionand its importance."

Health care legislation passed earlier thisyear may make Medicare annual enrollmentseason particularly challenging for the mil-lions of baby boomers aging into Medicareand for seniors already enrolled who are con-sidering different coverage for 2011. Annualenrollment runs from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31,allowing people to select their Medicare cov-erage for 2011.
"Choosing a Medicare plan can be over-whelming in any year," says AdrienneMuralidharan, senior Medicare specialist forthe Allsup Medicare Advisor, a Medicareplan selection service for people with disabil-ities and those 65 and older. "However, thisyear there are not only the usual changes, such as premium and coverage changes, youalso need to understand how the PatientProtection and Affordable Care Act mayaffect your 2011 Medicare coverage."
According to Muralidharan, the mostimportant ways the new health care legisla-tion will affect Medicare beneficiaries for2011 include:
Prescription drug costs should be lowerin the "doughnut hole." For 2011,Medicare beneficiaries will receive a 50 per-cent discount for the cost of brand-nameprescription drugs and a 7 percent discountfor generic drugs they are taking while in theprescription drug doughnut hole.
Medicare Part B (medical insurance)will fully cover preventive care. Beginningin 2011, Medicare beneficiaries will nolonger have to pay deductibles or co-pays forpreventive services that fall under U.S.Preventive Service Task Force guidelines, such as an annual wellness exam.
More beneficiaries may have highercosts for Medicare Part B and Part D (pre-scription drug) coverage. The Part Bincome threshold freezes at the 2010 levelsthrough 2019. As a result, individuals withmodified adjusted gross income (income)exceeding $85,000 and married coupleswith income exceeding $170,000 will haveto pay higher premiums. Because this willnot adjust with inflation, it's likely morepeople over time will be subject to higherpremiums. In addition, the law reduces theMedicare Part D premium subsidy for indi-
viduals with incomes above these levels.Opportunities to change coverage after
the annual enrollment period will be morelimited. Historically, an open enrollmentperiod ran from Jan. 1 through March 31,immediately after annual enrollment ended.During open enrollment, people were ableto switch from their existing Medicare plansto similar Medicare coverage, choosing from"like to like" options.
Now, open enrollment has been replacedwith a shorter annual disenrollment period, which runs from Jan. 1 through Feb. 14.During this period, the only change that canbe made is to disenroll from a MedicareAdvantage plan in order to enroll in tradi-tional Medicare and join a Medicare Part Dplan. Other selections will not be availableto consumers.
"It's easy to get confused over the variousMedicare enrollment periods,"Muralidharan says. "However, it's now moreimportant than ever to look at annualenrollment as your main opportunity tochoose your coverage."
Additionally, people now turning 65 andbecoming Medicare-eligible for the firsttime should carefully review their options -and make certain they follow the enrollmentguidelines. Failing to do so can trigger cost-ly penalties and may mean certain coverageis unavailable in the future.
"The choices you make about yourMedicare coverage can have a significanteffect on your health care and yourfinances," says Muralidharan. "If you areuncertain about which Medicare plans areavailable to you, or which would best meetyour needs, seek help before enrolling."More information on Medicare plan selec-tion assistance is available atMedicare.Allsup.com or (888) 271-1173.

Reasons to review yourmedicare coverage
Changes brought on by health care reform are justone reason people should evaluate their Medicarecoverage. Each year, individuals with Medicare shouldconsider different health care coverage if they experi-ence any of the following:
• Your health situation has changed in thepast year.
• Your provider situation has changed(for example, you hospital or physicianleft your plan).
• Your coverage has changed (for example, certain drugs, procedures or conditions areno longer covered).
• Your plan premiums and/or co-paymentshave increased.
• You have moved to a new location.• Your current plan no longer will be available.

Seventy year-old Jane Fretz is a lovingwife, a dedicated mother of five, and the rockof her family. She is always the first one tooffer support when someone is going througha tough time, and the first one to receivegood news from relatives. So when she wasdiagnosed with indolent non-Hodgkin’s lym-phoma five and a half years ago, roles reversedand her family became her rock.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (also known asNHL) is a cancer that starts in cells calledlymphocytes, which are part of the body’simmune system. The American CancerSociety (ACS) estimates that in 2010 alone, more than 65,500 Americans will be diag-nosed with NHL, and four out of 10 lym-phoma cases will be of the indolent, or slowgrowing, form.
Throughout her cancer experience, Fretz’sfamily was not the only support network thathelped her get through this time in her life. She tapped into her local Cancer SupportCommunity (CSC) affiliate for supportgroups, educational workshops andmind/body classes. The CSC, uniting TheWellness Community and Gilda’s ClubWorldwide, provides high-quality psychologi-cal and social support through a network ofnearly 50 local affiliates, more than 100 satel-lite locations and online.
Introduced to the CSC by her husband’sfriend, Fretz felt immediate ease when shewent to her first meeting. There were peoplethere going through the same experience asher, and they were bonding over their condi-tion. Fretz soon learned firsthand that one ofthe CSC’s goals was to provide people dealingwith cancer resources and programs designedto help patients and their families navigatethrough this moment in time.
One of CSC’s newest educational initia-tives, Framing Life With Lymphoma, was
recently launched with support fromCephalon Inc. Created through input froman expert Steering Committee, a patient focusgroup, and a national survey fielded by HarrisInteractive of 150 hematologists/oncologistsand 133 indolent lymphoma patients, thisprogram is research-based and provides lym-phoma patients with easy-to-use tip sheetsoutlining ways to approach each conversationwith their healthcare team across the course oftheir cancer journey — from diagnosisthrough treatment. The patient tip sheets, survey results and other program informationcan be found atwww.FramingLifeWithLymphoma.org.
“We are pleased to provide patients withthe Framing Life With Lymphoma program, and hope it will become an importantresource for the lymphoma community,” saysKim Thiboldeaux, president and CEO of theCancer Support Community and advisor forFraming Life With Lymphoma. “A clearmajority of patients and physicians reportedthat discussion materials would improve theirconversations. That is exactly what this pro-gram aims to do — provide patients withvaluable resources — such as our patient tipsheets — to ensure that areas of concerns arecovered during appointments.”
Throughout her years of battling, andultimately achieving remission from, indolentNHL, the CSC became a staple in Fretz’s life. She became a dedicated board member, andthrough that position was able to participatein a patient focus group that helped the CSCdevelop the program’s tip sheets.
“I am proud to have been involved in thefocus group to help develop the tip sheets, and I am really excited to be able to share thisprogram with everyone,” Fretz says. “Some ofthe tips that I really stress to my family andfriends that are going through a similar diag-nosis are 1. establish your network; 2. beinformed on your disease; and 3. you’re notalone — there are support systems out therefor yourself, and your family.”
Some of the other tips featured on theFraming Life With Lymphoma tip sheetsinclude:• Bring questions and write everything down• Engage your support network• Speak up• Have a 24/7 plan• Know your cancer - it’s unique• Understand your team;know your “teamcaptain”

Do you sometimes wheeze or stopto catch your breath when walking upstairs? Perhaps you get tired while gro-cery shopping or when walkingaround the mall. Maybe you have acough or a cold that just won't goaway.
These seemingly simple interrup-tions to your daily life could be a signof a serious disease called chronicobstructive pulmonary disease, orCOPD. COPD - which includesemphysema and chronic bronchitis - isa serious lung disease that over timemakes it hard to breathe. In COPD,people's airways - the tubes that carryair in and out of the lungs-- are par-tially blocked.
People often ignore their symp-toms, passing them off as normal signsof aging. In fact, COPD is the fourthleading cause of death in the UnitedStates. Twelve million Americans arecurrently diagnosed with COPD,while an additional 12 millionAmericans may have the disease andremain undiagnosed. COPD affectsone in five people older than 45 andoccurs most frequently in people age40 and older with a history of smok-ing. Current and former smokers areat risk.
Smoking is the mostcommon cause ofCOPD, accounting foras many as nine out of10 COPD-relateddeaths - but smoking isnot the only cause. Asmany as one out of sixpeople with COPDhave never smoked.Heavy or long-termexposure to secondhandsmoke or other air pol-lutants also may con-tribute. Environmentalexposure also can be afactor. People who havehad long-term exposure
to substances that can irritate thelungs, such as certain chemicals, dust,or fumes in the workplace, can devel-op COPD.
In some people, COPD is causedby a genetic condition known asalpha-1 antitrypsin, or AAT, deficien-cy.
"Recognizing the signs and symp-toms of COPD and your own risk fac-tors is an important first step. But itmust not stop there. COPD can betreated,'' says James P. Kiley, Ph.D.,director of the Division of LungDiseases at the National Heart, Lungand Blood Institute (NHLBI), part ofthe National Institutes of Health. "It'scritical that people talk to a doctor ifthey are experiencing symptoms. Theearlier a person receives proper treat-ment, the better their chances toimprove quality of life."
COPD is diagnosed with a simplebreathing test called spirometry. It'squick and painless - and worth it.With proper diagnosis and treatment,COPD patients can breathe better.
You can find out more by visitingCOPD.nhlbi.nih.gov. This educationalWebsite is part of a COPD awarenesscampaign from the NHLBI of theNational Institutes of Health.
