Survivor Dinner Brings Honor, Opportunity and Engagement

Lilly Oncology On Canvas Art Exhibition

Honoring cancer survivors is an essential part of Relay For Life. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life encouraged cancer survivors and their caregivers to attend a celebration of life and hope on June 12, 2012 at V’s Italian Restaurant.

The event commemorated the lives of hundreds of residents who have survived cancer, while offering the H.O.P.E. (Honor, Opportunity, Provide, Engagement) of finding a cure. Survivors are the heart of Relay, and their caregivers are the beacons of support through the cancer journey. Relay gives communities the opportunity to honor and support those who have faced cancer.

I walked around a track today;I walked to help a disease go away.I walked because there is a need;I walked that bodies could be freed.I walked to give a small child hope;I walked to help someone cope.I walked for a husband or a wife;I walked to help prolong a life.I walked with my head held high;I walked for that one about to die.I walked excitedly not demure;I walked to help find a cure.I walked for everyone to see;I walked for you, I walked for me. ~ Cancer Survivor

Lilly Oncology On Canvas, an art exhibition honoring the journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis, was on display at Centerpoint in conjunction with Relay For Life and the celebration of Centerpoint’s Cancer Outpatient Clinics’ one year anniversary. A public exhibition showcasing the art was hosted on June 19, 2012.

The exhibit, which is touring communities nationwide, showcased select pieces of art from the 2010 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition. Launched in 2004, the Lilly Oncology On Canvas Art Competition and Exhibition invites people from the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, who are diagnosed with any type

of cancer – as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers – to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journeys meaning. Winners’ prizes consist of donations made to the cancer-related charities of their choice. Art from the competition tours hospitals, cancer centers and cancer advocacy group events.

American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life A Huge SuccessThe American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people every year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and empower individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that takes so much. The event is designed to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds to support the Society’s vital mission of eliminating cancer by helping people stay well, get well and by finding cures.

On June 22, Centerpoint Medical Center hosted its first Relay For Life and raised more than $46,055; exceeding the goal of $30,000. More than 345 participants and 35 teams helped make this possible, as well as countless hours spent by staff and committee members.

A survivors’ lap kicked off the event at Centerpoint. Each cancer survivor completed the first lap around the track before being joined by caregivers and other participants. After nightfall, the main highlight of Relay For Life was the luminaria ceremony. Hundreds of luminaria bags dedicated to loved ones lined the grounds and were left shining bright throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. Every dollar raised goes toward fighting cancer. The American Cancer Society funds more than $120 million of cancer research each year.

Thank you to everyone who raised funds to help create more birthdays and to the following sponsors:
