BIGGER YIELDS FROM THE GROUND UP

3

The Biological Edge

In order for growers to maximize their yield and profit potential, theymust look beyond the standard options to their soil and plant’s biological systems.

2

Today’s farming environment has becomea survival of the fittest with growers pushingthe limits to get the most from every acreof production. In the last decade, signifi-cant technological advances have beenmade that push limits further than ever before. When you consider the numerousadvancements in farm equipment, plant genetics and chemicals ranging from herbicides to fungicides to insecticides, the choices and technologies available totoday’s farmer are staggering.

In order for growers to maximize their yieldand profit potential, they must look beyondthe standard options like the newest trendin equipment, the latest seed genetics orthe hottest chemical that promises to solvetheir problems. Even bumping fertilizer (N-P-K) rates, expecting yields to jump accordingly, is simply not the answer to better profits and higher yields. To trulymaximize yield and increase profit margin, one must look beyond the obvious physicaland chemical fixes, and consider the critical

role the soil’s biological life plays in cropproduction. In fact, many yield and diseaseproblems are caused by the neglect of thisessential component in crop productionwhich, unfortunately, is all too often over-looked by most growers.

What if you could simply tank mix a productto your normal spray program that has atargeted effect on the soil and plants’ biological system — one that improves soilstructure, increases fertilizer efficiency, improves plant growth, boosts yields andlowers disease pressure? FoliarBlend® isdesigned to do just that and more. Foliar-Blend does what chemicals, fertilizer andphysical tillage alone can’t, and it fills agrowing void that is missing in today’s agriculture. Don’t let the name mislead you.FoliarBlend is just as effective in the soilas it is on the plant. Smart growers lookingfor an edge are quickly discovering justhow rewarding FoliarBlend can be, both inthe field and in the bank.

YOU’RE ALREADYSTANDING ON THE KEY

TO BIGGER YIELDSAND BETTER PROFITS

All too often, the biological componentof plant growth is an overlooked key to increasing yield and profits. Whenequally addressed along with the physi-cal and chemical aspects of crop production, the results can be signifi-cant in terms of yield and profit.

THE THREE SOIL PROPERTIES

Unlock your crops’ potential and bank on bigger yields.

5

Extreme temperatures, adverse weatherconditions, disease, insect pressure, inad-equate and imbalanced plant nutrition—allof these conditions can rob your crops ofthe yield and profits you deserve. Whenapplied as part of a good managementprogram, FoliarBlend works to keep yourplants and the immediate soil environment,“spiked up” with the nutrition and growthsupplements required to maximize yieldand minimize plant stress.

FoliarBlend simply helps a plant to reachits genetic yield potential by boosting plant growth, increasing nutrient uptake,

strengthening the plants’ natural defensesystem and building a healthy, diseasesuppressive growing environment. Re-search has proven that crops treated with FoliarBlend are healthier and experi-ence less disease pressure, have im-proved nutrient availability, establish largerroot systems with stronger stalks andhigher yields.

FoliarBlend represents a new generationof bio-stimulant technology. Containingcomplex carbohydrates, plant essentialmacro and micronutrients, a proprietaryblend of beneficial enzymes, amino acidsand a host of naturally occurring plant andsoil stimulants not found in ordinary fertilizers. FoliarBlend has a profound effect on both the plant’s and the soil’s microbial environment.

4

Performance In The FieldField tests show that FoliarBlend, when added to full or reduced rates of fertilizer, has consistentlyoutperformed full rates of N-P-K alone. Research and grower testimonials also indicate that FoliarBlendis superior to other bio-stimulant technologies, especially when comparing its ease of application, impact on yield, effect on plant and soil health, the cost savings received from reduced fertilizer andchemical inputs, and the return on investment from using the product.

FACING THE CHALLENGE

FoliarBlend is cost effective for virtuallyany grower regardless of size. Growersroutinely report a profit from FoliarBlendfrom the savings they realize in fertilizer andchemical inputs alone. When you add FoliarBlend’s impact on yield, the financialreturn can be significant. In fact, we feel a grower should receive a “minimum” of $3 returned for every $1 spent on Foliar-Blend or else we are simply not doing ourjob. Most growers discover their return tobe far greater, especially in high value specialty crops like fruits and vegetables.

“If you do a test plot with FoliarBlend, it willprove itself and put more money in your pocket.

It pays for itself in a hurry if you use it right.”

BENEFITS AT A GLANCE

FoliarBlend Works The Way Nature Intended

% of Change in Nutrient Availability using FoliarBlend

FoliarBlend delivers a wide range of benefits for growers who want to create a healthier, moreefficient growing environment and maximize their return on investment. University research, as well as independent field trials by growers around the world, show that regular use of FoliarBlend contributes to better fertilizer utilization, improved plant growth and vigor, increased root development, better soil conditions, less disease and insect pressure, higheryields and better crop quality.

If your soil is like most, you probably havean abundance of insoluble nutrients thatare not available to your crops. Many of these nutrients are fertilizers you’ve invested in but are receiving no benefitfrom. FoliarBlend can access these nutrients and put them to work for yourcrop this growing season.

When soil applied or placed in furrow atplanting, the active ingredients in Foliar-Blend trigger natural biological processesthat create an explosion of beneficial microbial growth of 3,000% or more withinthe first 72 hours of application. This increased enzymatic and microbial activityworks to release insoluble nutrients in thesoil and convert them to a soluble formplants can utilize. By improving the uptakeand availability of applied fertilizers andthose nutrients presently in the soil, FoliarBlend helps “Get What You’re Pay-ing For” out of the soil and into the plant.

This tremendous increase in the availabil-ity of nutrients has a direct effect on thegrowth and development of your crops, resulting in healthier, higher quality plantswith better yields. By improving nutrientuptake, the yield and quality of forage andfeed crops are also improved consider-ably. Increases in tonnage of 10 to 20%and relative feed values of 20 to 50 pointsare quite common with FoliarBlend onthese type of crops.

University testing has proven that whenapplied broadcast to the soil or placed in-furrow at planting, the active ingredientsin FoliarBlend create significantly higherconcentrations of available nitrogen, calcium, copper, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, boron, molyb-denum, iron and zinc compared to un-treated soils. FoliarBlend also boosts theconcentration of these nutrients in thevegetative tissue as well, having a positiveresult on yield, test weight and quality.

SOIL APPLICATIONIT’S ABOUT GETTING WHAT YOU’VE ALREADY PAID FOR

In a detailed University study, the ingredients inFoliarBlend significantly increased the uptakeand availability of 12 macro and micronutrientswhile lowering the levels of sodium in the soiland plant tissue. Conclusion: FoliarBlend not only improves yield and plant growth, but has the potential to reduce environmental pollution by more efficient utilization of fertilizer nutrients and thus the potential reduction ofapplied fertilizers. In nature, when plants and animals expire, over time they decay with exposure to water, sun, air and the family of naturally occurringmicroorganisms called decomposers. How-ever, in most commercially farmed soils, biological activity in the soil has become verylow. This leaves partially decomposed organicmatter and crop residue to accumulate, minimizing the soil’s effectiveness to transfernutrients and increasing the risk of seedlingdisease. The result is a greater dependence onapplied fertilizers and chemical fungicides tosustain favorable growing conditions.

FoliarBlend re-invigorates this natural biolog-ical process by increasing the populations ofindigenous decomposing microorganisms in

the soil. In fact, research by EMSL Labs, NewYork, NY, verified FoliarBlend was able tostimulate microbial activity by 3400% within 24 hours of application. This improves the natural bio-degradation process which allowsthe earth to recycle itself, resulting in more organic matter and the production of humus,a valuable source of plant nutrition. By stimulating microbial activity, crops benefitfrom an increase in available nutrients as wellas the production of plant beneficial proteins, enzymes, antibiotics, and growth stimulantsthese microbes generate. The plant/soil system becomes healthier and more efficientin its uptake of nutrients, requiring less waterand applied fertilizers to produce higher crop yields.

SOIL BENEFITS AT A GLANCE

The above chart demonstrates FoliarBlend’s ability to suppress soil borne pathogenic microbes in both low yielding andhigh yielding soils. This represents a 63% reduction in the low yielding soils and 92% reduction in high yielding soils.Study performed in Florida.

Increased Microbial Activity, Improved Nutrient Cycling and Better Residue Management

QUALITY OVER QUANTITYMore of the Good, Less of the Bad Soils with low levels of

microbial activity will not be as productive as thosewith elevated levels of beneficial micro-organisms, regardless of the amount of fertilizer applied.

While high microbial populations in a growingenvironment are important, a better indicationof a soil’s health and production capabilitiesare the types of microbes involved. This bringsto light another advantage of FoliarBlend, theability to minimize disease and soil bornepathogens while elevating the numbers ofbeneficial species. In numerous replicatedstudies, the ingredients in FoliarBlend havedemonstrated the ability to significantly lowerseveral groups of deleterious and diseasecausing microbes in a variety of soil types.

FOLIAR FEEDINGAN IMPORTANT LINK TO HEALTHIER

PLANTS & HIGHER YIELDS

What can you do to maintain top Yield Potential? The best defense against yield loss and diseaseis a healthy plant. Maintaining a high nutrient con-tent helps to ensure plant health. Compatible withmost liquid fertilizers, and chemicals, FoliarBlendis an easy way to improve plant growth, yield andquality. Applications timed before or during keygrowth stages in crop development or nutrientdemand can help plants overcome “hiddenhunger,” where nutrient availability falls short ofcrop demand for top yields.

Plants seldom have all the nutrition or energy theyneed to maintain all the blooms or kernels theyhave initiated. Too often, many of the blooms falloff or kernels slough off in the early stages of development and yields suffer. FoliarBlend canhelp the plant hang on to more flowers or kernelsand keep pushing through critical stages ofgrowth for increased yields.

Designed for rapid absorption on the plant’s leafsurface, the nutrients and growth stimulantsfound in FoliarBlend enhance photosynthesisand the plant’s ability to provide carbohydrates, proteins and other needed growth compounds. These essential compounds are then transferredthroughout the plant including the root system. From the root system, some of these move outinto the rhizosphere (the soil zone that surroundsthe roots), feeding bacteria, algae, fungi and pro-tozoa which in turn produce a broad spectrum of beneficial enzymes, organic acids, antibiotics and other valuable growth stimulants. These compounds are re-absorbed by the roots andtransported back throughout the plant system increasing yields and producing healthier, nutrientrich crops the way nature intended.

FOLIAR BENEFITS AT A GLANCE

It’s Like an ImmunizationShot For PlantsIt bears repeating, the best defenseagainst yield loss and disease is ahealthy plant. FoliarBlend suppliesnutrition and powerful growthstimulants, but it also has ingredientsdesigned to activate and strengthen theplant’s natural defense system. A unique andproprietary benefit of FoliarBlend is its abilityto induce Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR)when applied to the plant’s foliage. Regular applications elevate the plant’s natural defensesystem against a range of disease causing fungi, bacteria and viruses. This also improves theplant’s ability to better withstand environmentalstress and may reduce the impact of insect dam-age on crops.

FoliarBlend can be compared to an immunization shot, ensuring the plant’s defense systems are in a high state of readiness to respond when stress occurs.

1514

Increases root mass; improving water uptake and absorption.

Better water regulation and retention within the plant.

FoliarBlend increases the availability of phos-phorus and other essential plant nutrients inthe soil. Phosphorus is important in rootgrowth and development. With increased rootgrowth, there is a larger root surface withwhich to take up water and other nutrients, making the plant more efficient. With a moreextensive root system, the roots occupy alarger volume of soil, which in turn, increasesthe volume of water available to the plants. FoliarBlend also contains natural plant growth stimulants that trigger rootgrowth and development.

FoliarBlend influences other essential plantnutrients making them more available toplants. For example, FoliarBlend increasespotassium levels in the plant. Potassium regulates water uptake by controlling transpi-ration through the leaves. Potassium alsohelps to move nutrients into and within theplant. Other plant nutrients, such as calcium, influence the thickness of cell walls and alsothe thickness of the cutin layer on leaves, stems and fruits. The cutin layer is the waxysurface on plants that reduces water loss.

FoliarBlend also contains natural plant growth stimulants that trigger root growth and development.

IMPROVEDPOROSITY,FRIABILITYAND DRAINAGEIN THE SOIL.FoliarBlend increases the porosity of manysoils and makes the soil looser. Roots have difficulty penetrating heavy clay soils. Foliar-Blend increases the friability (looseness) ofsoils enabling roots to be longer, deeper, andmore branched. This increased root growth increases the surface area of the roots, thevolume of soil and amount of water availableto the plant. Another aspect of increasingfriability is that with increased air space, thewater holding capacity of the soil also increases. Thus, there is more water availableto the roots in a given volume of soil. As thesoil becomes more porous, water more easilydrains from the soil. While this would appearto have a negative effect on water conserva-tion for lawns and gardens, it does not. Plantroots require oxygen to grow and thrive. Theyrequire oxygen to take up plant nutrients andwater. If the soil around the roots is too wet (acondition called “wet feet”), the plants do nothave enough energy (from respiration) to takeup water and essential nutrients. That is whyover-watering can cause a plant to wilt. Poorlydrained clay soils tend to become wet and staywet, making it difficult for plants to take upwater. What is needed is a balance betweenwater and air in soil pores. FoliarBlend, by increasing friability, porosity, and good drainage, helps increase the water efficiency of plantsand contributes to water conservation.

FoliarBlend is designed to safely promoteplant growth, improve soil conditions and enhance water conservation. Real world expe-rience has shown that the addition of Foliar-Blend as part of a comprehensive fertilizationprogram may help reduce water consumptionin some cases by as much as 30%! While theexact level of water reduction will be affectedby many variables, you can count on Foliar-Blend’s ability to improve the water efficiencyof plants in the following ways:

n Increases root mass; improving water uptake and absorption

n Better water regulation and retention within the plant

n Improved porosity, friability and drainage in the soil

While FoliarBlend contains a variety of micronutrients, it may not be sufficient to overcome a severenutrient deficiency in the soil or plant. Only soil testing and tissue analysis can determine the adequacyof available nutrients for optimum plant nutrition.

Research has shown that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup®, cansuppress the formation of nitrogen nod-ules on soybean roots and temporarilyweaken the plant’s immune response anddefense mechanisms. This negative ef-fect is further magnified when conditionsplace the plant under stress from environ-mental conditions or attack from pests or disease.

Hundreds of university and indepen-dent studies have shown there is a yield drag of 5 to 10% with Roundup Ready® (RR) varieties compared to com-parable conventional varieties grownunder similar and favorable conditions.Ongoing research on yield drag in RRsoybeans points to the following fourpossible explanations detailed on the following pages.

First, Glyphosate is a strong chelating agent which binds divalent micronutrients in theplant, especially manganese and iron. Flashing or yellowing of young leaves of RR cropsis often the result of glyphosate binding these divalent micronutrients.

Second, Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, can suppress the formation ofnitrogen nodules on soybean roots. This reduction decreases the amount of nitrogenavailable to the soybean plant and can reduce yields. This effect from appliedglyphosate is greater when the crop is under stress from conditions such as drought. The effect of glyphosate is likely on the suppression of rhizobium, the symbiotic bacteriarequired for nodulation, but it may also be from a broader effect on the normal physi-ology of the soybean plant.

FOLIARBLENDOFFSETS THEYIELD DRAGGINGEFFECTS OFGLYPHOSATE.

Third, Glyphosate application temporarily weakens the RR soybean plant’s immuneresponse and defense mechanisms, especially when conditions place the plant understress from environmental conditions or attack from pests or disease. With the plant’sability to defend itself at a weakened level, the plant is more susceptible to diseaseand insect pressure resulting in yield loss.

18 19

Fourth, In addition to suppressing the plant’s natural defense system, research indi-cates that glyphosate also promotes the proliferation of opportunistic disease causingpathogens in the soil, most notably the Fusarium and Pythium spp. Studies reveal thatRR soybean plants treated with glyphosate have much higher levels of these pathogenson the roots compared to RR soybean plants not sprayed with glyphosate. While RR soybean plants are not normally killed by these diseases, the plants must use valuable energy to protect themselves from these pathogens, which likely contributesto yield reductions.

In 2006 through 2008, research was con-ducted between the University of Mis-souri and the USDA-ARS in Columbia,Missouri. The purpose of this researchwas to track FoliarBlend’s impact on cropyield along with measuring its ability to re-duce pathogenic Fusarium coloniesaround the roots of RR soybean plants. As evidenced by the photographs above, fungal populations around the roots of RRsoybeans treated with glyphosate weresignificantly higher compared to thecheck RR soybeans not treated withglyphosate. However, on RR soybeanstreated with both glyphosate and Foliar-

Blend, the fungal populations were com-parable to the non-treated roots demon-strating FoliarBlend’s ability to reducethe pathogenic stress on RR soybeanplants caused by glyphosate. In fact, thistrend held consistent throughout the en-tire course of the study with FoliarBlendreducing fusarium colonies in 100% ofthe test strips in 2006 – 2008. The aver-age count of Fusarium colonies on thesoybean roots over the entire 3 year studywas 103.1 CFU/100 cm of roots for theglyphosate control plot and 48.6 CFUsfor the FoliarBlend treated plot.

FoliarBlend contains numerous chelatedmicronutrients, including manganese andiron, which can reduce the nutrient tie upeffect caused by glyphosate on RR crops.Since the micronutrients in FoliarBlendare chelated, it can be tank mixed withglyphosate to minimize “yellow flash”symptoms without reducing the efficacyof the herbicide. In fact, most growers re-port improved herbicide performance andweed control when glyphosate is appliedin conjunction with FoliarBlend. For addedinsurance against “yellow flash” symptomsand resulting yield drag, it is advisable toadd AgriGuardian™ Micro Mix to all glypho-sate applications. Field trials have shownthe combination of FoliarBlend and Micro-Mix can further enhance yield, plant healthand crop quality.

Glyphosate kills by shutting down the nat-ural defense system within the targetedweed species. This is done by chelating-and making unusable — key micronutri-ents required by certain biochemicalpathways within the plant. Another pri-mary target of glyphosate is to shut down

Glyphosate

the Shikimate Pathway within the plant. This pathway produces Salicylic Acid, thesignaling compound known to activateSAR (Systemic Acquired Resistance)within the plant. SAR in turn activates theplant’s natural defense system which canprovide long lasting, broad-based resist-ance to environmental stress and diseasecausing pathogens.

While RR crops can tolerate glyphosatewithout being killed, evidence shows thatglyphosate does suppress the plant’s nat-ural defense system and a real Yield Drag

effect does exist. By glyphosate temporar-ily suppressing the shikimate pathway, theplant cannot produce salicylic acid. With-out salicylic acid, the plant’s natural de-fense system (SAR) cannot be activated, leaving the plant more susceptible to yield loss from environmental stress andattack from various pests and diseasecausing pathogens. FoliarBlend containssalicylic acid, the signaling compoundthat glyphosate suppresses in order to killplants. The level of salicylic acid in FoliarBlend is sufficient to sustain plantvigor and elevation of the RR plant’s natural defense system, yet it does notlimit, nor prevent, the herbicidal action onthe targeted weeds.

While plants have a natural defense sys-tem (SAR )to fight off stress from diseaseand adverse conditions, their defensesystem is not activated until the plant actually comes under stress from diseaseor environmental stress. In other words, the plant’s ability to fight off disease andstress is delayed until the attack strikes, catching the plant in a low state of readi-ness to ward off the effect and minimizeyield loss. The ingredients in FoliarBlendactually engage and elevate the plant’snatural defense system prior to any period of stress. This makes the plantsstronger, healthier and better prepared tofend off disease, weather related stressand other factors that can rob your cropof valuable yield.

MORE FOLIARBLEND CROP RESULTS...

There are several so called “bio-stimulant” prod-ucts on the market today that range from simpleformulations containing products like beer, soap, apple cider and humic acid, to more sophisti-cated solutions that contain enzymes, aminoacids and live species of beneficial bacteria. Some are effective, some are not; however, noneare able to match the benefits of FoliarBlendwhen you compare cost, performance and ease ofapplication. Unlike competing brands, FoliarBlendutilizes a proprietary stabilization process that allows it to be tank mixed with core in-puts. Being able to tank mix andapply FoliarBlend in conjunctionwith liquid fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides andpesticides represents a signifi-cant savings in applicationcosts alone.

When stored properly, FoliarBlendalso has a guaranteed shelf life of fouryears which further separates it from

other products on the market today. Many com-peting products break down and lose their effec-tiveness in a short period of time. For some, deterioration and loss of efficacy can begin in lessthan 30 days. Should unforeseen circumstancesprevent you from applying FoliarBlend this year, you can be assured that when stored properly, you will get 100% effectiveness next year!

• Apply 16–24 ozs. per acreanytime from pre tassel to justafter pollination has completed.

Field Crop Usage The applications listed may be applied in conjunction with corresponding liquid fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide or insecticide applications.

Directions for Use FoliarBlend may be applied by ground or air. If applied by air it is recommended touse a minimum of 5–10 gallons of water per acre. If applied by ground it is recommended to use 10–20 gallons of water per acre.

Compatibility FoliarBlend is a stable product with excellent tank mixing characteristics. It can be appliedin conjunction with most herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and foliar fertilizers. A jar test is recommendedprior to tank mixing. Test results have shown that FoliarBlend can stimulate higher yields through increasednutrient uptake, larger root mass, earlier fruiting and increased fruit retention. It is not a replacement forfertilizer. Soil sample regularly and use FoliarBlend in conjunction with good fertility practices.

Apply to the soil, seed, and plant foliage. Total applications of 32 – 48 oz./acre are typ-ical for field crops with 16 oz./acre applied broadcast or in furrow at planting, followedby one to two foliar applications at 16 oz./acre each. If only one foliar application ismade, rates up to 32 oz./acre may be used.

FoliarBlend can be applied through standard ground or aerial application equipmentand properly equipped irrigation systems. It is available in 2.5-gallon containers, 55-gallon drums, 275-gallon mini-totes or bulk tanker load quantities.

For more than 30 years, Agri-Gro Marketing, Inc.,has established a tradition of excellence, manu-facturing an ever-increasing line of innovativeproducts that offer unmatched value for the global marketplace. Over that time, we have become leaders in the field of bio-stimulant technology for agricultural and horticultural use. Thanks to the development of innovative productslike FoliarBlend, producers around the globe cangrow higher quality, better yielding crops while reducing production costs and the need forchemical inputs.

Quite simply, our technology helps growers create healthier, more balanced soils and plantsthat produce higher yields with superior quality. Most of the focus in agriculture is on thechemical and physical as-pects of the productionprocess and rightfully so,they are truly important. However, in order to maximizeany plant’s yield potential

one must look beyond just the physical and chem-ical and consider the biological element of cropproduction as well. This is an essential area ofcrop production that many growers overlook andwhy FoliarBlend was developed. It is a truth, Fo-liarBlend does what fertilizer and physical tillagealone cannot.

Our products have been tested by the USDA andnumerous state universities and proven underfield conditions to perform as claimed. Foliar-Blend improves the yield and quality of grain, fruit, vegetable and horticultural crops while decreasing fertilizer requirements and the needfor chemical inputs such as pesticides, herbicidesand fungicides. Agri-Gro’s proprietary formula-

tions are derived from a unique pro-cess that extracts beneficial plant com-pounds along with naturally occurringbacteria and fungi. Our products are environmentally safe, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and contain no patho-genic micro organisms.
