cont. Joseph Maroon, M.D. from pg. 1also have greater amounts of saturated fats. These oils are often found in deserts which also contain processed sugars. Sat-urated fats can directly stimulate the genes for fat storage cells called adipocytes to make the inflammatory mole-cules called cytokines that have been linked to the onset and sever-ity of diabetes and vas-cular disease. These diseases age us faster and reduce overall lon-gevity. Omega-6 fats are another type of polyunsaturated fat we get from our diet and are found in grains

such as corn, safflower, cottonseed oils. This type of fat is essential for our good health but because these oils are used as part of almost every processed food we eat they have be-come a detriment and contribute to excessive body-wide in-flammation. By either reducing the amount of omega-6 oils we consume or consuming more polyunsaturated fats like omega-3 essential fats found in fish, seafood, and many fresh vegetables and we can actually counter this source of inflammation. Omega-3 and omega-6 fats molecules make up ev-ery cell membrane in the body and ideally are present in a ratio to keep cellular inflammation in check. Excessive di-etary levels of omega-6 can overwhelm the O3/O6 balance and lead to an inflammatory state. Over the last 150 years with industrial farming of grains like corn and sun flowers manufacture of omega-6 oils has exploded and is now the dominant polyunsaturated oil in our diet. This shift has meant much more omega-6 is used by our cell membranes compared to omega-3. The result is not only a change in the physical properties of our cells but it has contributed to what many consider the major health epidemic of the 21st century – chronic inflammatory disease. Atherosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries”, arthri-tis, inflammatory bowel disease, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and even type 2 diabetes are all chronic inflammatory diseases and are now the most common diseases of the West-ern world. Although eating the wrong fats is a major contrib-utor to chronic inflammatory diseases, other dietary causes, excessive weight and lack of physical activity, environmental toxins and even emotional stress can all play major roles in the development and continuation of these diseases and thus accelerate the aging process. Adopting a diet low in saturated fats and higher in unsaturated (mono- or omega-3 polyunsaturated) fats can re-duce inflammation related diseases and allow our bodies to age healthier. In fact modified diets such as the heart healthy diet first promoted by Dr Dean Ornish using fruits and vege-tables, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nonfat dairy, and egg whites, and avoidance of saturated fats, refined sugars, and processed carbs has been proven by actual heart cathe-terization to reduce vascular blockages. In addition to better dietary choices here is a list of some of the best and most researched tips to help reduce inflammation and promote healthy aging to remain younger on the inside and out. Stay in Motion throughout your Life The human body is designed to be in motion. Un-fortunately too often it seems we do everything to avoid it. We have cars, escalators, elevators, moving sidewalks and now the internet where we only need to move a mouse to order food, clothing and even our healthcare delivered to our front door. All this sitting actually reduces our lifespan.I found early on the benefit of routine exercising when I suf-fered a bout of depression early in my career. Exercising not only burns excess calories to help control weight and im-prove cardiovascular health, it can also release an antidepres-sant-like hormone in the brain. A hormone called BDNF and certain neurotransmitters naturally increase when exercising to improve mood, sleep and perhaps most importantly cause new brain cells to grow.Although exercising at least 30 minutes per day can have tremendous health benefits, if you are really focused on an-ti-aging consider a more intense program. I am a triathlete and have enjoyed both the excitement of competing and the benefits of training at a very high level. I have found it helps me focus my thoughts as a surgeon and has in many ways allowed me to live a mostly disease-free life. Heart disease prevention research shows that exer-cise should be intensive enough to raise your heart rate to a level that moderately stresses the heart. This is referred to as “target heart rate”.Your maximum heart rate (MHR) is about 220 minus your age; however for daily exercises it is best to target a rate of 85% of the MHR. If you are older than 50 seek out medical clearance if you are just starting out. Avoid the Traps of Modern Society Our modern life is a perfect cocktail designed to kill us. We exist in a state of constant stress, exposed to cheap fatty, sugary, fast foods, our walks consist of from our front door to our cars and our environment has never been more toxic. So we should ask ourselves: Should we just give up and allow our healthcare system to pump us up with pills and procedures or should we fight back? There are examples of communities around the world including the Seven Day Adventist in Loma Linda, California, the natives of Okinawa, Japan and Sardinia, Italy, to name a few, that have fought back these society pressures and live on average longer than anyone else. Referred to the “Blue Zone”, in Dan Buettner’s book of the same name, these peoples have strong social connections, practice religion or mediation, eat mostly a Mediterranean diet, do hard physical work and avoid most environmental toxins. They experience few chronic diseases and in generally live their lives requir-ing very little medical care– a great example to all of us and the good news is, you don’t have to actually live in a Blue Zone to make this work. It is a matter of choice. Better Brain Habits As mentioned Alzheimer’s disease including other neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease have an inflammatory component. Studies have actually shown that

regular aspirin users have a lower incidence of have Alzhei-mer’s disease. One of the more natural ways to reduce brain and body inflammation is to increase the amount of omega-3 fats in your diet. Omega-3’s can be used to make anti-inflam-matory hormone that can counter omega-6 made eicosanoids and lower levels of inflammatory blood markers. Although some amount of saturated and omega-6 fats are still required by the body another healthy strategy would be to avoid exces-sive consumption of dairy, fatty meats, sugar, refined wheat products, corn and other vegetable oils. Up to 40% of our brain cells are made of omega-3 fats. They are essential to the body and organ function since they are a structural part of all human cells. Humans do not make omega-3 and therefore they must be consumed in our diet as food or as fish oil supplements. Exercise is critical to the production of the hormone called BDNF. BDNF stands for brain-derived neurotroph-ic factor found in the human brain that can improve brain signals and activate genes that increase memory by increas-ing both brain cell production as well as brain connections. Exercise is the single most important stimulus for BDNF production. Until recently researchers only knew that exer-cised-induced BDNF could enhance brain function. Recent research investigating neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and major depression has found that low levels of BDNF are more common in people with these con-ditions. In addition, BDNF levels are low in those who are obese or have type 2 diabetes. As of yet no definitive study has shown increased BDNF is protective to reduce the onset of these conditions, but exercise in fact can benefit and often prevent many of these conditions. Other studies have shown that BDNF plays a role in brain pathways that controls body weight and energy production. Avoid Carbohydrates – SUGAR Although insulin is an essential hormone used by the body to allow glucose, a simple carbohydrate, to enter our cells too much insulin can mean big problems over time. Consuming carbohydrates in the form of simple sugars, such as sucrose, fructose and glucose, will cause the pancreas to pump out insulin so rapidly that too much sugar is pulled into our cells and brain cells can actually begin to starve from lack of blood glucose. This diet-related up and down cycle of blood sugar to the brain can impair thinking and induce brain and body wide inflammation. In addition severe drops in glucose can lead to excessive or even binge eating leading to weight gain and further stress on the pancreas leading to type 2-diabetes. Maintaining chronically higher than normal levels of glucose in the blood due to a high carbohydrate diet is as-sociated with a condition called pre-diabetes. Over time in both pre-diabetes and diabetes toxic molecules called AGES – Advanced Glycation End Products can development. These “sticky” molecules can form in tissues and vessels through-out the body and are compared to the brown basted skin of a Thanksgiving turkey. This tough, inflexible and inflammato-ry cover can coat major organs and even lead to organ failure. AGES are thought to be a major cause of accelerated aging seen with undiagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes. Build up Muscle Muscles become less flexible and lose mass as we age. These changes in connective and muscle tissues can also occur due to reduced physical conditioning. Ligaments and tendons also begin to dehydrate. Calcium deposits can build up and replacement of muscle fibers with fatty, collagenous

fibers reduces joint and muscle mobility and strength. Mus-cle tone declines about 22 percent by age 70. Resistance training with even very light weights has a positive effect on muscle mass. Avoid excessive weight and stick to high rep workouts. A well balanced diet containing sufficient protein is critical for muscle cell growth and main-tenance. Unfortunately about 25% of men and 35% women consume less than the current Recommended Dietary Allow-ance (RDA) of dietary protein and this deficiency increases with aging. A daily protein supplement containing the amino acid Leucine has been shown to be especially effective in pre-venting muscle loss with aging. Vitamin D and omega-3 fish oils can also help with new muscle cell development Strengthen your Bones Bones besides providing the structure of body are an important reserve for minerals like calcium, copper, zinc and others that are used throughout our body. As aging oc-curs hormone changes in both men and women that alter bone density and reduce bone strength. Reduced exercise and lack of resistance training will also add to this loss. Bone loss can start to occur as early as 35 especially in women who have had multiple births. Walking, running and resistance training can slow bone loss with aging. Maintain a diet rich in minerals like calcium. Short periods of sun shine exposure to the skin can build stores of vitamin D. Don’t smoke and avoid excessive caffeine intake since these can cause minerals to leach for bone. Minerals and vitamins in foods and as supplements are critical for maintaining bone health with aging. Those commonly recommended for bone health are: Calcium, vita-min D3, magnesium, copper, selenium, vitamin C and K-2, silicon and boron. The inability to absorb calcium is a ma-jor reason that calcium therapy fails to prevent or slow the progression of bone loss with aging. Vitamin D3 taken with calcium will normally promote absorption and assimilation of calcium into the bone matrix. Don’t Lose your Senses As early as our 40s close vision can deteriorate and details can be lost. Aging conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration can steal vision as well. Senses of taste smell and high frequency hearing will also decline. For better eye and skin health avoid excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Less direct sun can reduce skin wrinkling and the formation of cataracts. Avoiding excessive noise can help reduce hearing loss and regular eye checkups will detect in-creased eye pressure associated with glaucoma. Vitamins A and beta-carotene are required by eyes for normal, healthy function. Prevent age related macular degeneration with a diet or supplements containing the anti-oxidants lutein, zeaxanthin and glutathione, vitamins C and E and essential minerals such as selenium, copper and zinc. The omega-3 DHA is found in the eye membranes and is an important structural component of the eye.

Financial Health/EducationA Clean Slate: Review and Rebalance Your Portfolioby Rita M. Maher, Wealth Advisor/ Stratos Wealth Partners, 30575 Bainbridge Rd., Suite 100, Solon, OH 44139. Cell 440.668.9889. Direct 440.505.5646 Fax 440.505.5647 /[email protected]

There is no better time to take a fresh look at your investment strat-egies than the beginning of the new year. And while there is no one-size-fi ts-all approach to investing for the future, reviewing your goals annually can help you stay on track from month to month--and year to year. Progress Check: The goal of an investment review is to make sure you’re in position to pursue important short- and long-term goals during the coming year. However, it is diffi cult to get a clear vision of the future

without fi rst reviewing whether you have managed to stay on track during the past year.

For example, ask yourself the following questions: • Are your savings and investing goals still realistic, or might you now need to accumulate more (or less) money than origi-

nally planned? • Has the time frame for any of your fi nancial goals--such as your retirement date--changed in the past year? • Have you been contributing as much as

possible to your tax-deferred retirement accounts? The 2013 and 2014 contribution limits are $17,500 for employer-sponsored retirement accounts, such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s, plus another $5,500 in catch-up contributions if you are over the age of 50. For traditional and

Roth IRAs, the limits are $5,500 with another $1,000 in catch-up contributions.

Correcting for Asset Allocation “Drift” You should also be aware that your asset mix, or asset allocation, is always subject to change.1 That’s because investment performance could cause the value of some of your assets to rise (or fall) more than others. When an asset allocation shifts due to market performance, it is said to have “drifted” or become unbalanced. How you go about rebalancing will depend on your particular circumstances. If you are mak-ing regular contributions to a retirement plan, the easiest way to adjust the makeup of your contributions is to build up underweighted assets. This avoids transaction costs and does not require liquidating and reinvesting assets, which can have tax consequences. In general, it’s a good idea to avoid liquidating existing assets unless the tax consequences work in your favor. If you must rebalance assets outside of your retirement plan, try to do it in another tax-de-ferred account such as an IRA, again to avoid immediate tax consequences. And if you’re looking for new money to help rebalance your portfolio, consider using a lump-sum payment such as a bonus or tax refund.

To better appreciate how performance differences can affect a portfolio over time, consider what might have happened to a hypothetical portfolio of 70% U.S. stocks, 10% bonds, 10% foreign stocks and 10% cash equivalents if left untouched for the 20-year period ended December 31, 2012. In this example, the original 70% allocation to domestic stocks would have grown to 79.4%, while all the other allocations would have shrunk, reducing their intended risk reduc-tion role in the portfolio. As always, past performance is no guarantee of future results.2Bonds haven’t been as volatile as stocks over long periods of time, but recent history shows that they too can experience performance patterns that may alter asset allocation over time. Consider the divergence of the stock and bond markets in 2008 and how that affected asset al-locations. While the S&P 500 lost 37% during this period, long-term U.S. government bonds gained 23%. A portfolio composed of 50% of each at the start of the year would have shifted to an allocation of 34% stocks and 66% bonds at year’s end.3 Seeing the Whole Picture: If you have multiple investment accounts, determining whether to rebalance may involve several steps, beginning with a check of your overall allo-cation.4 This entails fi guring how your money is divided among asset classes in each account and then across all accounts, whether in taxable brokerage, mutual fund or tax-deferred ac-counts.

How often should you rebalance, and what are some general guidelines? The usual answer is anytime your goals change; otherwise, at least once a year. However, to keep close tabs on your investment plan and make sure it doesn’t drift far from your objectives, you may prefer to set a percentage limit of variance, say 5% on either side of your intended target that would trigger a review and possible rebalancing. 1Asset allocation does not assure a profi t or protect against a loss. 2Source: Wealth Management Systems Inc. The performance shown is for illustrative purposes only and is not indicative of the performance of any specifi c investment. The hypothetical returns used do not refl ect the deduction of fees and charges inherent to investing. Your results will vary. Example is for the 20 years ended December 31, 2012. Domestic stocks are represented by the total returns of Standard & Poor’s Composite Index of 500 stocks, an unmanaged index that is generally considered repre-sentative of the U.S. stock market. Bonds are represented by the total returns of the Barclays Aggregate Bond index. Money markets are represented by the total returns of the Barclays 3-Month Treasury Bills index. Non-U.S. stocks are represented by the total returns of the Morgan Stanley Capital International Europe, Australasia, Far East (EAFE®) index. It is not possible to invest directly in an index. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Investing in stocks involves risks, including loss of principal. Bonds are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rates rise and are subject to availability and change in price. Foreign investments involve greater risks than U.S. investments, including political and economic risks and the risk of cur-rency fl uctuations, and may not be suitable for all investors. Treasury bills are guaranteed by the U.S. government as to the timely payment of principal and interest, and, if held to maturity, offer a fi xed rate of return and fi xed principal value. 3Source: Wealth Management Systems Inc. Stocks are represented by the S&P 500, bonds by long-term U.S.

Choosing the “Best” Test Prep by Patricia Saddle, President of The College Planning Center Most students are anxious about taking college entrance exams. Taking a good test prep course or working one-on-one with a tutor can help alleviate some of this anxiety by allowing students to become familiar with the exams and test-taking strategies. Here are some questions to ask when looking for a test prep class: Who will be teaching the class? Some test prep companies use recent col-lege graduates who had high SAT/ACT scores when they took the exam in

high school. Be cautious if this is the case. There is a difference between scoring well on an exam and being able to teach others how to do well. Be sure to ask about the training the instructors receive to help them become effective teachers, not just effective test takers. The best programs either use experienced educators as instructors, or use educators for training instructors. What is the content of the class? Is time equally divided between the different sec-tions of the exams, or are whole sessions devoted to specifi c sections? Is more time spent on particular sections or particular skills development? Additionally, ask how many full-length practice exams, using real exams, will be given during the course; the more the better. Also ask how the practice exams are scored and shared with students. Do they get personal feed-back on their strengths and weaknesses? Of course, you should always consider how you learn best, and then look for programs that are a good match for your learning style. Some students will do best with private tutoring, while other students can do well in a group setting. What materials will be used in the class? The best test prep classes and test prep tutors will use actual SAT and/or ACT exams for practice rather than create their own exams. While many test prep companies use their own proprietary study books, they should also incorporate the College Board’s and the ACT’s own study guides into the classroom. What is the class size? Look for smaller groups, and be sure to ask how much time is allocated in each class session to answering individual questions. What is the refund policy? If your child thinks the course isn’t helping after a session or two, can you get a refund? What happens if your child gets sick or has a scheduling confl ict that requires dropping out of the course? Can you provide references? Checking references is especially important if you are considering hiring a private tutor. However, keep in mind that what works well for one student isn’t necessarily the best fi t for all students. When checking references, be sure to dig deeper in your questions to try to get a sense of the tutor’s style, approach, and ability to adapt to your child’s needs. What is the tutor’s or prep class success rate? Use caution here. If a class or tutor suggests that all students who take the course will raise their SAT scores by 100 or 200 points, it should set off warning bells. Students in any class will learn and improve at their own rates; it is very rare to see the same increases across the board for all students. Similarly, don’t be overly impressed by promises that your son or daughter can retake the prep class for free if their scores don’t increase. You want a course that helps the fi rst time. A good question to ask of courses or tutors who make this promise is “what percentage of students retake the course because they didn’t get the scores they hoped for after the class or working with the tutor?” Listen to the answer care-fully. Sometimes what seems like a positive, isn’t. A high percentage of repeats is not necessarily a good thing; you want a class that is likely to help the fi rst time you take it. It was 1984 when I founded English Nanny and Governess School on the campus of Case Western Re-serve University in Cleveland, Ohio (English Nanny & Governess School (440) 247-0600. [email protected] 37 South Franklin Street, 30-32 South Franklin Street, Cha-grin Falls, OH 44022) I knew then that a holistic approach to child rearing was important, so I hired an extensive faculty of experts to address the physical, emotional, intellectual and cognitive development of children. In addition to physical care and safety, students learned about the psychological development and tem-perament of the individual child. Nutrition was of major importance with an emphasis on cooking healthy, well balanced, meals. As long as 30 years ago, students were taught that a bottle of soda drink contained as much as 10 teaspoons of sugar, and the benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Then, as now, students were taught how to have children explore the environment, looking under rocks to see what wiggles around beneath, what creatures appeared, to wonder why the sky is blue, why do birds fly, how much fun it is for young children to play in water and mud and how to skip down the road while singing silly songs, or reading aloud to the child cuddled on their knee. We were not then, nor now, influenced by electronic boxes, preferring a cardboard box to be an airplane, car, shop, house, or whatever a child’s imagination conjures up. Our graduates encourage their charges to explore their world through using all of their senses including touching, smelling, seeing, tasting, listening and social interaction. At English Nanny Governess School, students learn to appreciate art, music, litera-ture, and how to involve children in creative play. In essence, we teach good parenting skills which in the years of our existence has proven to be most appreciated and desired by parents and their children. Sheilagh Roth was born in England. Her devotion to nannies comes from her happy childhood growing up in England with her wonderful nanny, Ida Rose. In 1984, Mrs. Roth created and founded English Nanny & Governess School on the campus of her alma mater, Case Western Reserve University. English Nanny & Governess School was the first residen-tial school in America with a full academic faculty dedicated exclusively to the education of

nannies and governesses. In 1993, the school relocated from Cleveland and opened its own campus in the nearby historic village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. As Executive Director of this unique school, Mrs. Roth has received constant media attention since the school’s inception. She was invited to The White House to represent the nanny profession at First Lady, Hillary Clinton’s Conference on Childcare. She also was a judge for the “Parents Magazine Nanny Award” with Hillary Clinton presenting the award. Mrs. Roth has been a guest on “Larry King Live”. She has appeared on innumerable television interviews, including “Good Morning America” and “Fox Cable News.” Mrs. Roth has also been featured in many major articles published about the school, in “The Times of London,” as well as others. Last year in an Akron Beacon Journal article that the Associated Press and the Global News both published in newspapers all over the world. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded her a Gold Key membership to be a delegate to join the mayor of Cleveland on an Economic Developers Mission to Bulgaria. In addition to being the Founder and Executive Director of English Nanny & Gov-erness School, Mrs. Roth is the president of the American Council of Nanny Schools—a coalition of schools awarding the Certified Professional Nanny and Certified Professional Governess credential. She is a charter member of the International Nanny Association where she served as a member of the board. Mrs. Roth is a member of an advisory board of the Au-burn Career Center, which has been recognized as a “National Model School”. She has been a presenter and representative at the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Mrs. Roth has been instrumental in requiring regulation for the International AuPair programs. She has been an advisor for the Chronicle Guidance and the Department of Labor. For over a quarter of a century, she has been a leading advocate for benefits and respect for the American nanny. Her graduates are now respected and hired by royal and presidential families.

Education and Career

Comments by a Graduate of English Nanny and Governess School Prior to my enrollment and subsequent graduation from English Nanny & Governess School

(ENGS) in Chagrin Falls, Ohio I had very limited childcare experience but knew that’s where my passion was. Early on in my education at The ENGS I realized that I would soon have an immense repertoire of child rearing skills and that I would finally be able start my career as a Certified Professional Governess and Newborn Care Specialist. My favorite, and perhaps the most useful part, of being a student at ENGS was learning new and innovative ways to care for my charges not only in a creative manner but also by learning about basic child psychological and social development. Among many other things, the School taught me healthy meal planning, how to organize an educa-tional, yet fun, day and how to engage children in creative play and story time. While in school I was fortunate enough to be able to hone those new skills by caring for a local family with children ranging in age from newborn to school age. I have now been a governess for over 5 years and love every aspect of it; especially teaching children and sharing my knowledge with the community. NC. see pg. 9

NATURAL WAYS TO DIGESTIVE HEALTHStephen Holt, MD, LLD (Hon.), ChB, PhD, DNM, FRCP (C), MRCP (UK), FACP, FACG, FACN, FACAM, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, NYCPM, NY, Scientific Advisor Natural Clinician LLC, Little Falls, NJ Digestion and General Health-Without healthy function of the digestive tract, general health cannot prevail. Every bathroom cup-

board in America contains one or more digestive aids, including laxatives, ant-acids and other concoctions for “tummy problems”. Digestive upset is notoriously recurrent in many people, because it is often triggered by adverse lifestyle. While symptoms of digestive disturbance can spell serious disease such as cancer or inflammation, most common digestive symptoms are due to altered function of the digestive tract. These disorders are called “functional diges-

tive diseases”. Examples of functional digestive upset include the irritable bowel syndrome and upper abdominal pain in the absence of peptic ulcer. This disorder is often called functional dyspepsia. The mechanisms that control digestive function are highly complex and they have to work in harmony. Drugs and surgery for digestive disease do not work generally to restore the harmony of the gut, but these approaches are necessary for diseases that alter the structure of the bowel, e.g. cancer, certain serious types of inflammation and other serious diseases. I propose that functional upsets of the digestive tract are a prime target for the use of remedies of natural origin. Natural substances may provide simple, gentle and safe first-line options, before an individual reaches for an over-the-counter drug or drug prescription. Traditional Use of Natural Remedies for Digestive Upset-Several approaches ex-ist in natural medicine to attempt to rebalance digestive function. Many consumers associate

Mind-Body Connection and Weight Lossby Coral Arvon, Ph.D., LMFT, (Director of Behavioral Health and Wellness, Pritikin Longev-ity Center + Spa/ •PhD, Psychology, Columbia Pacific University

•MS, Marriage and Family Therapy, Barry University•MS, Clinical Social Work, Barry University•BA, Special Education, Boston University Dr. Coral Arvon has garnered national acclaim for her expertise in overcoming challenges like anxiety and chronic stress. She also has extensive experience in sex therapy and in helping people conquer addictions, particularly food dis-orders like emotional eating and obsessive/compulsive eat-ing. It is not news that the growing trend of obesity in the United States over recent decades is an epidemic problem to our collective health as a country. Individually, each obese person is likely to incur approximately $1500 more in medi-cal expenses per year, contributing to the $190 Billion annual increase in U.S. Besides the financial costs, obesity can cost us our life. Many problems such as heart disease, diabetes,

and yes, death. Unfortunately, decreases in those statistics are not expected. At the Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa, healthy weight loss is an important compo-nent to achieving long-term health goals for our clients. Healthy diets and nutritional choices, along with physical activity are longstanding methods of weight control—but other less-prac-ticed remedies exist for consideration. Here’s one: Mindfulness—how one’s mood, outlook, and ability to stay mindfully calm in the present moment can prevent unwanted weight gain and benefit overall health. Being mindful includes the ability to control our reactions to ongoing, and often stressful, life events. Most would agree that we spend far too much time worrying about what has already happened in the past or what we fear may happen in the future. While this re-sponse is an automatic reaction based on subconscious, limiting beliefs accumulated through life experience, many don’t realize the huge impact that stress has on our health and even on our weight.

Stress triggers the body’s release of the hormone, cortisol. The intended role of this hormone is a good one—to protect the body from a perceived impending danger—as signaled by a state of stress. Unfortunately, it is released whether a real physical danger exists or not. When too often we create the level of stress that unleashes the ‘fight or flight syndrome’ for our protection, this hormone becomes a registered belly-fat creator, and over time distributes extra layers of fat around our middle to protect our organs from some perceived danger. This worked well for cavemen facing menacing dinosaurs in their hunt for food. But today, this process is actually dangerous to our health because it surrounds our organs with stubborn visceral fat that can prevent proper functioning of our vital processes. With continued stress from the many “dinosaurs” we have to slay daily and overuse of this protec-tive mechanism, our immune system is weakened, rendering it less effective in fighting real dangers to our health, like cancer and other chronic disease. If we were able to practice present-moment awareness more often, the idea is that we would control our thoughts and reduce unnecessary stress. One benefit is that the faulty need for cortisol production would be reduced. How we allow our minds to deal with the stress-causing frustrations of life affects not only unwanted pounds showing up on our bodies, but ultimately, it affects our overall health and the quality of our lives, as well. When we learn to make a practice of restricting our thoughts to what we can and need to actually control in the moment, we are able to maintain an equilibrium of emotions that eliminates unnecessary stress and its effect on our bodies. This is not to suggest that we ignore the human condition and realities of life—it is simply that we adopt better ways to manage those issues that is important. The good news is that this can be achieved. According to an article in Psychology Today by psychotherapist, Melanie Greenberg, an expert in mindful-ness, “neuroscientists have confirmed that our mind is constantly rewiring and reconditioning itself.” What that means is—we can change the way we think! “How to Wake-Up” by Toni Bernhard, a Buddhist-inspired author, gives us insights and tools to practice self-compassion and mindfulness. Through the use of meditation and other mind-body connection tools, mindfulness becomes an achievable means of preventing weight gain, while improving overall health and longevity. At Pritikin, we already have many tools in place to assist you on your journey toward a more mindful state of being and a healthier, fuller life of joy. Come, join us! www.pritkin.com

Are You Compensating? CONFESSIONS OF THE HIGHLY FUNCTIONING LEARNING DISABLEDBy Kathy King

By day Dr. Joni Johnson wears her pediatricians coat and helps children, adolescents and adult live better lives, espe-cially those with learning and behavioral disorders. Once a month she serves as a Colonel in the U. S. Army Reserves. Dr. Joni is also a devoted mother and accomplished profes-sional. Dr. Joni J. Johnson is a modern day hero pinned with a Bronze star medal for her military service. But before serv-ing as Brigade Surgeon in Ramadi, Iraq, and attending the U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint, NY or jumping out of that plane as an army trained paratrooper, Joni Johnson had an unresolved problem that she hid well for many years. “When I was growing up I knew I couldn’t read. I was scared to read. It was as simple as that. I knew something was wrong but nobody paid any attention to me. Why? Be-cause I was a high achiever. I was smart. I learned how to compensate.” The website www.medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/compensation defines Compensation as -An uncon-scious psychological mechanism by which one tries to make up for imagined or real deficiencies in personality or physical ability. While at U.S. Military Academy at Westpoint, NY Dr. Joni continued to struggle since she believed that no one took her seriously when she asked for help, she says she compensated by, ” being personable, convincing people to

help me without them knowing that I needed help.” All that came to a screeching halt in med school. Joni didn’t recognize that the issues she had which made it difficult to read and com-prehend were fixable. In her practice Dr. Joni often sees compensation occur in children and adults. She has found that parents sometimes expect more from their children than what the children may be built to provide or perform. She recalls that, “One of my mom’s favorite saying was ‘fake it until you make it’. And I did a great job of faking it.” “It wasn’t until I got to med school that I couldn’t fake it anymore.” After failing two classes Joni was ready to pack her bags and go home but, “lucky for me I went to a school that cared. They sat me down, figured out my full potential, what I was capable of accomplishing. The school support team figured out how I learned, how I processed information, how I took in information off the page, put it in my mind, and retain it, and act upon it.” At the age of twenty seven Joni Johnson was diagnosed with a visual spatial process-ing learning disability. “I received therapy and learned that I could do everything I want and do it well with accommodations if needed.” “ What my medical school did for me was to make me understand how important I am, how valuable the gifts god give to me are and that I could use those gifts to help others believe in themselves. It is what I do every day in my own practice Pediatric Partners for Attention and Learning.” Dr. Joni has gone from compensating to living a life unlike any other. From the huts of Senegal for her residency research, to managing the Walter Reed Army Hospital, ADHD Clinic in Washington DC, to Iraq and back, Dr. Joni has not let her disability stop her. In 2012 Dr. Johnson established Pediatric Partners for Attention and Learning, Inc. (PP4AL). PP4AL is a multi-disciplinary clinic developed to assist children, adolescents, young adults and adults in reaching their fullest potential academically, socially and in life. Dr. Joni and her staff of highly educated and talented professionals work each day to bridge the gap between medical, behavioral health and educational services. I decided to look into a new approach to improvinga golfer’s abilities and potential with HARVEY PEARLMAN, CBP, BA, LMT, CNMT, REV.by Bruz Fellenz Golf Coast Mag. Prior to receiving Advantage Performance Therapy, I was in the doldrums with my game and wasn’t looking forward to playing. After one session, I

couldn’t wait to get back out on the course and experience my new inner game of golf. After 5 sessions, I began making some amazing shots as my scores started getting lower. My “Golf Therapist” was able to remove the static that blocked me and I am now experiencing more enjoyable and better golf! I feel more relaxed and less constricted in my swing and more confident in general whether on the course or anywhere else. Also, I had a tendency to let my mind wander while on the course and he gave me a tool that keeps me present and consistently effective with my focus and concentration. Another issue that was hurting my game was that I was experiencing nagging back pain and he repaired that in one session.

My scores have improved, along with a much more positive attitude. I am more optimistic about golf and life! This golf improvement pioneer’s name is Harvey Pearlman. His approach to golf is the same as his approach to life…Breathe deep, stay present, fo-cus, loosen your mind and come to your senses, feel and enjoy your swing and don’t get overly excited when you have low or high success. Just keep swinging!” Harvey doesn’t teach technique or golf strategies. He has encouraged and supported me to seek profes-sional golf instruction to improve my swing. Harvey clears your mental and physical path-ways and helps you to connect to a deeper inner focus with expanded physical capaci-ty for maximum success. He is able to help golfers stay in a more positive frame of mind and empowers them to have super confidence in their games and swings. This method of sports improvement uses no needles, no hypnosis, no positive think-ing and accomplishes enhancements to performance with nothing new to learn or practice and is as relaxing as it is effective.Advantage Performance Therapy is for serious, committed golfers as well as weekend golfers who want to have every advantage to consistently win while also enjoying the game! Try this new approach as I am sure you will be happy you did. To make an appointment, call Harvey at (727) 259-8232. The Many Benefits of Vitamin D - Dr. Sidney Stohs Numerous research studies in recent years have shown important relationships between vitamin D deficiencies and many health problems and diseases in humans. The production of rickets in children and osteo-malacia(softening of the bone) in adults by a vitamin D deficiency has been known for almost 90 years. However, vitamin D does far more than promote healthy bones and teeth. A deficiency of this fat soluble vitamin has now been shown to be associated with increased incidences of heart attacks, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, multiple sclero-sis, lupus, periodontal disease, fractures, impaired cognitive functions, and

many forms of cancer. Over 50 % of people in the United States are believed to be vitamin D deficient, and this number increases during the winter months. Vitamin D is naturally pro-duced in the outer layer of the skin(epidermis) upon exposure to sunlight(UVB). Production is dependent upon season, geographic latitude, cloud cover, time of day, use of sun screen agents, and smog. A recent study showed that individuals with low vitamin D levels were over 2.4 times as likely to have heart attacks. Another large study demonstrated a 26 % in-

crease in all-cause mortality in conjunction with low vitamin D status. In addition to a lack of adequate sun exposure, vitamin D deficiency may be due to inadequate intake in the diet, disorders that limit intestinal absorption, impaired conversion to its active forms in the body, or hereditary disorders. Exceedingly few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D. In addition to the vitamin D produced in the skin, vitamin D is derived from fungal and algal plant sources. The richest natural source is fish liver oils as cod liver oil where it is concentrated by fish feeding on vitamin D producing algae. BRAIN FOG, FROM ALZHEIMER’S TO AUTISMTerry Chappell, MD. /Celebration of Health Association /Bluffton, Ohio. 419-358-4627 /www.healthcelebration.com Memory loss and inability to think clearly are common complaints, especially co-existing with fatigue. Usually they are associated with toxicity (especially lead, mercury and alu-minum), yeast imbalance, or food and chemical sensitivities. These are all easily detected through testing, but frequently the tests are not performed and the patient’s complaint is in-adequately treated. Proper treatment can be highly effective, if done comprehensively. Chelating agents, anti-fungals, pro-biotics, special diet and desensitization are common therapies that must be offered. After a few months of these plus good nutritional supplements, and sometimes much sooner, major changes might be detected by the patient.

Restoring Your Energy Field To Change Your Genetics And HealthBy Dr. Sean Stringer, DC, DPSc

In Germany in the 1970’s, an epic idea occurred in the field of quantum physics by Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp and others. Dr. Popp and his colleagues discovered that all living cells generate very low levels of extremely coherent light (similar to that of a laser beam). Dr. Popp’s associates laughed at and

mocked him. One of them even set out to prove him wrong by building a machine that was so sensitive that it could detect the light of a firefly 10 miles away! Guess what occurred, the machine proved Dr. Popp correct to the amazement of all. The machine, a CCD camera, is now a standard tool in its field. We now know that the cells actually can communicate to one another using this coherent light. Probably the most amazing discovery of Popp and his colleagues is that the body is controlled by a sophisticated plasma energy field never before known to modern man. This field is a grid-like matrix of light pathways created from bio-photons (weak light waves or particles) emanating from the cell. It permeates and extends beyond the physical body and governs all of the body’s biochemical processes. Here are the facts (all proven) about this amazing field we call the Quantum Energy Biofield (or more simply, the Biofield): 1. The Biofield is mapped by the acupuncture meridian system and is the mechanism whereby information is sent to and from the brain to operate everything properly. 2. Information travels through the field at twice the speed of light, and may explain mysteries such as why groups of birds or fish instantly change direction as a unit. 3. Scars and traumas anywhere on the body disrupt the Biofield and prevent the brain from sending appropriate nutrition to the tissues. The tissue affected is determined by the location of the scar or trauma. All kinds of scar-creating events do this, whether by surgery or accident, including: episiotomies, epidurals, hernias, C-sections, tattoos, etc. Also anything involving cutting or piercing the skin, no matter what the purpose was for. In addition, all heavy impacts also disrupt the Biofield. This includes but is not limited to: concussions, a broken nose, a tailbone injury, car-airbags hitting you, etc. 4. The effects of these disruptions/energy blockages, or Interference Fields, are slow and unrelenting, and continue to destroy their target organ or gland right up to the point of

death of that tissue, if left uncorrected. This happens even though the original event involving surgery or impact seemed to have no lasting ill effects. Some people when hearing this say “It happened so long ago; I doubt that it can have any effect now”. But not so, the longer ago the trauma occurred, the longer it’s had to relentlessly weaken the target organ/tissues. 5. Quantum Reflex AnalysisSM, a testing method that stands heads above others in its ability to reveal what your body needs, is a simple and yet profoundly effective system of testing the bio-energetic status of the body’s key organs and glands using a university-proven, U.S. patent, muscle testing technique on medically accepted acupuncture reflex points. The QRASM procedure taps into the wisdom of the body telling the practitioner what treatment is needed to create balance, strength and well-being. It’s non-invasive and non-toxic to the body so there’s no pain. QRASM successfully and with 100% accuracy identifies whether a particular scar or trauma is weakening its target organ, gland or parts. If necessary, it can be traced to the organ being destroyed. In some cases, QRASM can even roughly identify how long ago the trauma happened! This is because the body remembers, even if in our own mind we don’t, as in the case of a baby who is too young to have firsthand memory of it. 6. A fabulous therapy know as mud-packing, used in simpler form in ancient centu-ries (but forgotten long before modern times), will successfully erase the damaging and often eventually fatal effects of these Interference Fields and thereby restore coherence to the Biof-ield allowing fabulous healing! It doesn’t matter whether the concussion occurred last month or the episiotomy occurred 30 years ago; when properly done, in only 3 weeks, the disruption is totally erased and the organs/glands will start absorbing superb nutrition, if provided. 7. QRASM re-testing after the 3 weeks verifies that the therapy was successful in erasing the Interference Fields. 8. There has been a tremendous consistency when testing patients of almost any known chronic dysfunction; incoherence in the Biofield (an Interference Field) is always found! A few rare genetic conditions are “hard gene” based, so may not be driven by an Inter-ference Field. But the vast majority of conditions do get traced back (directly or indirectly) to the forgotten scar or trauma that often occurred years or even decades previously. Even many “soft gene” genetic conditions are exacerbated by Interference Fields. Not only can we erase the Interference Fields, but through cell resonance and re-methylation we can change the ge-netic expression of your DNA! (see ad p.9)

Autism therapy is guided by the Defeat Autism Now protocol that is available elsewhere on the internet. Some of the common additional treatments include methylcobalamin (B12 shots), a grain-free and milk-free diet, homeopathics, amino acids orally or by shot and hy-perbaric oxygen. Alzheimer’s, Parkinsonism, and Multiple Sclerosis might be treated effectively by balancing neurotransmitters and improving cell membrane receptor sites. Intravenous glu-tathione given in high doses at home can be helpful. Oxidative scavengers are useful. High doses of CoEnzyme Q10 and vitamin E might help, as can low doses of Naltrexone, which is a medicine that us approved for narcotic overdoses. Intravenous phosphatidyl choline can be useful, as can very high doses of B12 intravenously and vitamin C. The latter formula is particularly helpful for various neuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy. Helpful oral preparations include niacinamide, Lipothiamin, cholin, and apoaequorin. A brain that is not functioning well often needs a comprehensive approach that is individualized. There are many potential causes and there are many solutions, some of which must be given together. Five Tips for Enhancing Your FertilityBy Suzanne Munson, MS (Nutrition) Director of Product Development, Fairhaven Health

Current statistics reveal that at least 1 in 6 couples suffer from fertility issues, and this number will only increase as more and more couples wait until later in life to start a family. Needless to say, the road to parenthood is a long and bumpy one for some couples. Suzanne Munson, Director of Product Development at Fairhaven Health, offers these 5 tips for enhancing your fertility. • Pinpoint ovulation. Your best chance of conceiving in any given menstrual cycle is to ensure that sperm are waiting in the Fallopian tube at the time the egg is released from the ovary. But, to do so, requires that you know in advance when you will ovulate. In addition to charting your menstrual cycles and watching for signs of ovulation, you might benefit from using one or more available ovulation prediction tools, such as urine-based ovulation tests (known as OPKs) or an electronic fertility monitor.• “Baby dance” during your fertile window: To increase your odds of conception, plan to have intercourse no more than five days before you are predicted to ovulate, and con-tinue to have intercourse daily until you ovulate. • Check his sperm health: At least 30-40% of all cases of infertility are attributed to the male partner. If you have been trying-to-conceive for several months with no success, then it might be smart for your partner to have a semen analysis done to be sure his swimmers are plentiful and strong.

• Supplement with antioxidants: Free radicals, the unstable chemicals your body generates when it breaks down toxins wreak havoc with male and female fertility. Be sure to support your body’s ability to combat oxidative stress by supplementing with antioxidant nutrients, such as Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and CoQ10. • Exercise and maintain a healthy body weight: When trying to conceive, the better your overall health, the better your fer-tility will be, and the more likely you are to conceive. Be sure to exercise reg-ularly at a moderate pace and maintain a weight appropriate for your height and body structure. Since 2002, Fair-haven Health has earned a reputation as a leading provider of tools and natural products to support fertility. cont. from pg. 1 Dr. Block syndrome characteristics with your physician. You should also have a terrain assessment to determine whether inflammation or glycemia (abnormal blood glucose or insulin levels) are a problem for you, or whether there might be other imbalanced terrain factors in your case. Especially if you find abnormal levels of inflammation or glycemia, a comprehen-sive lifestyle intervention is in order. You should be eating a diet high in vegetables and fruits (note that some berries have angiogenesis-inhibiting properties), as well as healthful plant proteins and fish. Avoiding refined grains and sugars is crucial; whole, unrefined grains are much healthier for you. Healthful oils such as olive oil and omega-3 rich oils and nuts should be included in your diet. A committed exercise program including aerobic, strength and flexi-bility emphases is needed, and may help with weight control if you are not at a healthy weight. Supplementation with herbs and other supplements targeted to terrain abnormalities may help in counteracting the effects of any possibly overactive inflammatory and glycemia-related genes. Block Center staff can help you with developing a full program, and you can also look for advice in implementing this strategy in my book, Life Over Cancer.

In addition, though there are no major post-treatment mainstream therapies for triple negative disease, there have been some encouraging cell culture studies showing combinations of nutri-ents may slow the progression of this condition. For example, in a recent study, a combination of DHA and curcumin was shown to have antiproliferative effects on triple negative cells cul-tures. The effect was actually synergistic, which means that the two of them together actually had an effect that is multiplicative not just additive when combined. The effects of genes known to be involved in cell cycle arrest, cell death, inhibition of metastasis, and cell adhesion were enhanced, while the effects of genes involved in cancer development and progression, metastasis, and cell cycle progression were inhibited. Syner-gy and multi-targeting our actually core concepts of my philosophy of Integrative Cancer Treatment that I have been using for over thirty years now. And as mentioned above, another addition to this protocol would be to do an in-depth molecular tumor profile to find additional vulnerabilities that could be targeted with additional nutrients. The tandoor is currently a very import-ant fi xture in many Indian restaurants around the world. The word tandoori is the adjective meaning “pertaining to the tandoor” and is used to describe a dish cooked in a tandoor. A tandoor is a cylindrical clay oven used in cooking and baking. The tandoor is used for cooking in Turkey, Iran, Paki-stan, Afghanistan, the Transcaucasus, the Balkans, the Middle East, Central Asia as well as India and Bangladesh. The heat for a tandoor was traditionally generated by a charcoal fi re or wood fi re, burning within the tandoor itself, thus exposing

the food to both live-fi re, radiant heat cooking, and hot-air, convection cooking. Tempera-tures in a tandoor can approach 480°C (900°F), and it is common for tandoor ovens to remain lit for long periods of time to maintain the high cooking temperature. Some modern day tandoors use electricity or gas instead of charcoal. The tandoor is used for cooking certain types of Afghan, Pakistani and Indian, foods such as tandoori chicken, chicken tikka and bread varieties like tandoori roti and naan. The tandoor is basically used to cook meat while Hindus and Sikhs of India are mostly vegeatarian so it was popularised during Muslim reign in South Asia. It is thought to have travelled to Cen-tral Asia and the Middle East along with the Roma people, who originated amongst the Thar Desert tribes.- See more at: http://www.indianfoodsguide.com/food-articles/indian-food-arti-cles/what-is-a-tandoor-and-where-does-tandoori-originate-from.html#sthash.qndtiT57.dpufcourtesy 180 W Streetsboro St #5, Hudson, OH 44236. Ancient Grain Revered by the Amish Discovered by Michigan Co. Purity Foods, Makers of Vita Spelt and Nature’s Legacy-(Read more below and learn about their delicious, non gmo, non sticky, whole grain pasta)For many, if not most, among our New Year’s resolutions is to shed some pounds and/or get

in better shape. The goal can be formidable, after all, how do you think we got to this point? Often times some steps along the way seemed more like punishment than reward. Am I right?

We know that eating right and exercise are two key parts to getting healthy and staying that way. Anyone can guess that I am a food expert. Essential to any healthy eating program is two things: 1) healthy food, 2) food that tastes good! These two factors are equally important. Comparisons to Modern Day Wheat-Let me tell you about a delectable ancient grain that has existed, unchanged by man for over 8000 years. Unlike modern day grains which have in the very least been hybridized if not genetically modified. Take wheat for an example, since 1948 man has created over 40,000 hybrid, high yielding varieties of wheat. That is correct; these wheats were primarily created to attract purchase by their cus-tomer, the farmer and the farmer wants more yield. Very little, if any thought, was given to the digestibility or nutrient value of the grain. That attitude permeates most of agriculture today; consumers should be aware. Health Benefits to this ancient grain: Back to nature, this grain has more magne-sium which is actually used in over 18000 bodily functions, more cobalt which is necessary in the formation of B vitamins, more vitamin B1 and B3, more manganese which is necessary for all life forms and more zinc which is necessary in strengthening our immune system. This grain is legendary for its digestibility and as such was used as an elixir by 10th century St. Hildegard of Bingen who has been canonized and most recently been named a Doctor of the Church. Besides tasting good, this grain is easily digested, healthy, natural and nutritious. Purity Foods introduced spelt to the United States consumer over 20 years ago. It had been and was being grown in the United States prior to that time but mostly for animal feed. Many Amish grow it for their horses; a pretty valuable possession for an Amish man. Why was the speltz as the old timers called it just used for feed? When spelt grows it develops a heavy husk that surrounds two of the seeds. This husk does not come off in the harvesting

Can be done in a green smoothy, or you can lightly team or boil them. Two closed fist size portions every day.4. Raw Fats: Seeds, Nuts, Fat Fruits such as avocados, co-conuts, olives. Oils: Coconut, palm, or olive oil. Depending on your present weight, 2-4 Tablespoons per day. Also 1-2 Avocados per day.5-8 Sea Vegetable Salads with mature Sprouts. Must have

sea vegetables. Arame is a great example of a sea vegetable. 9. Grains 3 or 4 times a weeks. Example: Legumes, peas, garbanzos. Grains such as, Ama-ranth, Buckwheat, Millet, and Quinoa. Should be soaked and dehydrated but may be cooked in boiling water. Also Brown Rice for a cooked grain. 10. Steamed roots, such as yams, sweet potatoes green onions, green beans. Avoid Gluten, broiling, baking and grilling. High temperatures break down the fiber and the carbohydrates in the food which cause a higher glycemic intake, which then causes a spike in blood sugar. Along with incorporating these foods in to your diet, proper sleep, meditation, and journaling will help you recognize the triggers that emotional eating can bring on for unwanted weight gain. You will think more clearly, have more energy and avoid the pitfalls of preventable illnesses. People who have done this often describe noticeable relief from previous discomfort and have a greater ability to control their weight.ps. visit Portia’s Cafe (see ad on the left)

equipment that you see in a farmer’s fields. To remove the hull takes special equipment as well as equipment designed for dust control. The average farmer recognized that his animals benefitted from eating spelt and enjoyed eating it so it was relegated to animal feed, hull and all. Purity Foods began to have it dehulled. It was not an easy process. The paths included many blind alleys, but nothing worthwhile is achieved overnight. The hull is an important part of why spelt is good for us. With recent attention paid to the lack of digestibility of modern day free threshing wheat many scientists including gas-troenterologists and cereal grain chemists point to the enzyme inhibitors found in wheat. You see it is with enzymes that living things like insects and humans digest their food. When an insect attacks a virtually naked wheat kernel in the field he injects his en-zymes into the kernel; those enzymes then digest carbohydrates (amylase enzyme) or proteins (protease enzyme) or both and the insect finishes his meal. The plant senses the activity, yes truly- it is called wounding and sends more enzyme inhibitors to the remaining parts of the plant and kernels to discourage the attack from that or other insects. The remaining plant and wheat kernels survive only to be harvested, milled into flour and made into bread which some of us have a hard time digesting. Oh, if the wheat only had a hull on it! There are many other aspects to spelt that make this grain so unique and prompted so many calls to my phone from consumers who began the conversation, “Thank God for you guys; you changed my life. “ We would like to help you in making your life better as well. One way you can give it a try is to cook one of our 16 dry pasta items. For those people who have a hard time with the concept of eating whole grain, Purity Foods has 7 white pastas; but, believe me, the whole grain pasta is awesome! Both white and whole pasta cook in boiling water in under 5 minutes! That has to tell you something about the digestibility. There is no starchy residue that has to be washed off the pasta or the utensils. The whole grain pasta is 100% whole grain, not 51% that our FDA has allowed pasta manufacturers to call whole grain. The whole grain in a 2 ounce serving provides 20% of our recommended fiber intake. Purity Foods dehulls the grain and mills the flour as well and because of our desire to get it right, we developed a proprietary milling process that mills the whole grain flour so that it will pass through a 600 micron screen which is a designated screen size for white flour. The result is; no gritty texture on your tongue. Did I mention that all of our pasta is 100% organic and that we also are approved as Non GMO Verified? Lastly, Nature’s Legacy whole grain pasta works for many who have to watch their blood sugar levels. I did not just assume it would; we had it tested. Of those 16 dry pastas, we have 3 that take a little longer to cook because they have additional ingredients : two have flax seed flour for omega 3ís and the other has spinach and tomato flour for coloring in making a tri color rotini dish. All of our other dry pastas have two ingredients : flour and water. How much more natural can you get than that? Without Man’s Intervention, Nature did it right; that is why our retail pasta and snacks are called Nature’s Legacy. In this day of over processed foods, is there a more fitting name? www.natureslegacyforlife.com

Travel/Real EstateHow to Increase Wealth By Buying A Rental Property (Matthew specializes in the historic and cultural Chautauqua region)By Jason Grandon

Courtesy Matthew Wroda, Ind Associate Howard Han-na Holt Real Estate 79 West Lake Road, Mayville, NY 14757 /716-753-7880 /800-388-3689 /[email protected]

Below, we have summed up a few pointers to be borne in mind before you buy a rental property. Location:- Properties are easier to rent if they are close to the heavy traffic areas and have all the basic amenities near by. This way, you could easily gain the tenants and may also charge heavy rents as everyone would like to find a place near to the most visited places. Good location is the first thing that attracts every tenant. Rental History:- When you invest in rental properties, you should know the rental history of the place beforehand.

Know from how long residents are staying there and how well they are paying on time. Everyone likes to have co-operative, friendly and punctual renters, so ask to see their rental history. Low maintenance costs:- Look for buildings or houses that are maintained well and require no extra costs to be spent on them. Low maintenance costs mean less headaches and more profits. By choosing the rental properties that require minimal or no extra costs to be spent on damages or repairs, you could save a large portion of your money. Neighborhood:- Rental properties that are surrounded by good, friendly and co-operative neighbors are more attracted by tenants. You could get to know the behavior of neighbors by talking to them. Also check if they have any pets that keep barking all the night and pose an inconvenience to others. Know statistics:- Before you decide to buy a rental property, it is of utmost impor-tance for you to know the statistics of that particular place. You may visit the nearby police station to get the digits of the crime rates in the region. Also know from the past digits if the region is under developed, fully developed or still developing. cont. from p.5 Dr Holt Digestion...the lower bowel and promote health in a variety of com-plex ways (probiotics). Conventional medicine has argued that colon cleansing may not be a valuable intervention. However, many people report a favorable outcome from the appro-priate intermittent use of laxatives or colonic irrigation. There is a revival in interest in colon therapy and some studies are attempting to define the benefit of colon cleansing in a variety of circumstances. The idea that the bowel can be a source of toxins is a concept that is being increasingly accepted, even though it is often challenged in conventional medicine. Seeding the Guts: Prebiosis and ProbiosisThe value of using healthy bacteria (probiotics) in dietary supplements for gastrointestinal and general health is well recognized in the practice of natural medicine; and in recent years it has become part of main line conventional medicine. The process of reseeding the intestines with friendly bacteria normally found in healthy intestines is called probiotic therapy. One can assist the growth of friendly bacteria in the colon by using specific “foods” (often complex carbohydrates) that are used by friendly bacteria, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. Par-ticularly, good sources of oligosaccharides (FOS) that promote the growth of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria are oats, bananas and onions, which contain oligosaccharides (FOS), and soy beans and soy flour, which contain the complex sugars stacchyose and raffinose. Also, good bacteria love dietary fiber. www.stephenholtmd.com

Where have all the salespersons gone?

If there was a way to absolutely guarantee select business owners and professionals (large and small located anywhere on Planet Earth and beyond) additional sales with them paying a one-time cash publication fee of only $395.00, then only a 10% cash sales commission on the guaranteed additional sales would you be interested? If just for you explaining this to the business owners and professionals you received $300.00 of the cash publication fee and 20% of all the cash re-ceived from the cash broker fee would you be interested? If you were able to take advantage of this fantastic money making opportunity with a fi rm that has been doing just that since 1989 and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau would you spend the time necessary to learn every detail of the business? And I may add there is a lot to learn. If your answer to ALL these questions is a resounding yes then we would like to talk with you.

“Cool2Sweet Personalized Natural Soaps”I am 11 years old, and I love making crafts. I learned from school that we should

protect our environment by using green products. I started to make my own lip gloss and teeth whitener. They are not only safe and also very effective. I also found out white vinegar cleans better than Windex by testing on my own bathroom mirror. It is fun to make safe, home made goods to use. I started being interested in making homemade soaps after my cousin who lives with us had several skin rashes. One day, my mom and I bought some soap making materials and we started making soaps. We made different shaped soaps, soaps with toys in them, soaps with different designs, and of course many natural soaps too. We decided to give them to friends

as birthday gifts and making Christmas gift baskets for my teachers. My mom and I made many different natural soaps with various natural ingredients. We learned so much during this process. There are many different kinds of natural soaps (check out our FAQ page). We use them on ourselves. My cousin loves it. Our skin feels smooth and they are not dry; especially in winter. People loved the soaps so much that they started asking us to make soaps for them. That’s when I asked my parents if I can have a website and sell soaps online. Thus “Cool2Sweet” was born. My parents have been very supportive of my idea. My mom taught me how to book expenses and income in the excel sheet. So far, it

has been very interesting experience for me. I’m anxious to see my company grow. I want to donate some of my profi t to support Children’s’ Health Care Atlanta. Don’t Miss This Unique Opportunity! (July 2014 @ Kent State U.)Psychiatrist Harald Blomberg will be visiting the United States from Sweden this summer to share his exciting work, Rhythmic Movement Training (BRMT).

Dr. Blomberg and other practitioners trained in his approach have been using BRMT to improve motor functioning, attention and focus, speech, and writing and reading challenges including dyslexia. Additionally, Rhythmic Movement Training, which is based on the early movement patterns of the fetus and baby, has been found to successfully promote healthful emotional development and address behaviors commonly associated with ADD/ADHD and autism. The

underlying mechanism for achieving these results is stimulation and maturing of the brain as well as inhibition and integration of the early reflexes, which, while they are important developmentally, can present a variety of learning and functional difficulties if they remain active beyond the toddler stage.

An RMT symposium with Dr. Blomberg to be held at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio will begin on July 23rd with an initial

presentation and reception which is free and open to the public.

Three 2-day (15 hours) sessions will follow: BRMT Level I, which will provide foundational knowledge and practice emphasizing

BRMT for ADD/ADHD (July 24/25); BRMT and Diet in Autism and ADD/ADHD (July 26/27); and BRMT for Physiotherapists,

Massage Therapists and Chiropractors (July 29/30).

For more information, to reserve a place at the introductory session, or to receive registration materials for one or more of

the two-day sessions, please contact Dr. Lisbeth Justice at [email protected].

Dr. Blomberg will also be teaching the following sessions in Naperville, Illinois: BRMT for Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists and Chiropractors (July 7/8); BRMT Level Three- RMT & Reading, Writing, and Vision (July 10/11); and BRMT Dreams and Inner Healing (July 12/13). For more information, please contact Kate Wagner at [email protected]. Swedish psychiatrist Dr. Harald Blomberg, creator of Rhythmic Movement Train-ing, has been investigating the link between retained infant reflexes, learning challenges, and emotional imbalances since the 1980s and has taught BRMT across Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia. Dr. Blomberg has been utilizing Rhythmic Movement Training in his work for over 25 years, achieving positive results with people experiencing a variety of conditions and problems, including dyslexia, Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, motor problems, attention issues, autism and mental illness. In 2010, the Centrum för Rytmisk Rörelseträning (Center for Rhythmic Movement Training), was established in Stockholm. Dr. Blomberg is the author of a number of publications, including many RMT manuals, booklets on central nervous system stimulants and dyslexia, and three books: Helande Liv, Rörelser som helar (Movements that Heal), and En sjukdom som kan läka (Autism- a dis-ease that can heal). The Rose Speaks: A Funny thing happened on the way to the Leprosy Colony…Also known as Hansen’s disease – Leprosy is a chronic infection caused by bac-teria. A disease and stigmata.

I’m a grandpa and a geek, who’d rather be down in the creek, developing and playing games with my grandkids. I’m a Tom Sawyer Scientist building a flying machine called, The THING, to help kids fall in love with learning. What do I know about leprosy? I know there are children living at the Tahirpur Leprosy Complex in New Delhi. It was reported that His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited the residents there March 20, 2014. What’s good enough for the spiritual leader of Tibet is good enough for The Rose of Education Organization [TREO]. I show up at the gate.“Is this the place the Dalai Lama visited 4 days ago?” I ask. ‘Yes.” “What do you

want?” I want to learn how the education of the children living in the leprosy colony is affected. Turns out the children don’t get the same opportunities to learn English as their peers. English is the language of commerce in India, without it, one is at a disadvantage. The Grandpa in me wants to help. With the aid of Shashikan as an interpreter, I tell Venugopal, senior member of the complex, about these literacy games TREO is developing to help with vocabulary and comprehension. Maybe they can help here. How does it work? That’s when the Funny Thing happened: Actually it happened in the rickshaw on the way to the complex from the metro station. I received an email from Jerald Malamba, founder of Ebenezer African Hearts, a faith-based organization in Mwanza, Tanzania. Jerald also believes education is a pathway to freedom and independence. Jerald emails me to say he’s got 12 names of folks who have begun to play the literacy game: REAAL NAMES – turn your name into an acronym and begin to tell your story. Using only the letters of your first and/or last name, choose words to create a list of qualities and superlatives, or form a descriptive sentence. To show how it works, I introduce 12 of Africa’s REAAL KIDZS, who are defining their stories and saying Hello to India’s REAAL KIDZS at the Tahirpur Leprosy Complex, in Dilshad Gardens, New Delhi, India. How A Visit to the Leprosy Colony Spurs a Powerful Learning Technology and Game from the Rose of Education

“Sometimes a person’s struggles lead to a search for answers, producing a positive outcome not only for the individual but for others as well,”-Dr Harald Blomberg Such has been the case with Swedish psychiatrist Dr. Harald Blomberg, who as an

adult began to investigate movement as a possible way to ameliorate the effects of his childhood polio. In 1985, Dr. Blomberg became a client of Kerstin Linde, a body therapist with a reputation for suc-cessfully treating children and adults with neurological and other dis-abilities through the use of rhythmic movements based on the move-ment patterns of infants before they learn to walk. Linde’s method had a strong impact on Dr. Blomberg, who was given permission to observe her work with other clients. Amazed at her positive results with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy as well as Alz-heimer’s disease, psychosis, and other psychological and emotional challenges, Dr. Blomberg incorporated the rhythmic movement ap-proach in his work, achieving excellent results with neurotic and psy-chotic patients at an outpatient clinic where he served as a psychiatric

consultant and in his work with students diagnosed with autism, ADD, or dyslexia. Dr. Blomberg developed Rhythmic Movement Training, an approach which uses simple motor exercises, similar to the movements of a baby, to inhibit and integrate the primitive reflexes. These reflexes, which are controlled by the brainstem and play an im-portant developmental role, can cause a number of learning and functional difficulties if they remain active beyond the toddler stage. An underlying premise of Blomberg Rhythmic Move-ment Training (BRMT) is that the movements not only integrate the primitive reflexes but are essential for stimulating and linking up the various parts of the brain. This conclusion is grounded in Dr. Blomberg’s observation of the direct relationship, among Linde’s clients, be-tween their motor function improvements and improvements in other areas including speech and emotional and cognitive functioning. Subsequent findings by others provide further sup-port for this premise. For over 25 years, Dr. Blomberg has been successfully using rhythmic movement training, which has implications for a variety of fields, having been found to improve mo-tor skills as well as speech, attention, and focus; overcome reading and writing difficulties; promote positive emotional development; and improve behaviors commonly associated with ADHD and autism. Author of several books and manuals, Dr. Blomberg currently provides RMT services at his clinic in Stockholm and travels to various parts of the world to teach others the BRMT method. This summer a unique opportunity will be available in the United States: Dr. Blomberg will be presenting his BRMT approach at a symposium to be held at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.

Following an introductory talk and reception on July 23rd, two-day sessions will be held on: BRMT Level One, providing foundational information and

focusing on ADHD/ADD (July 24//25) ; BRMT and Diet in Autism & ADHD/ADD (July 26/27); and BRMT for Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists and

Chiropractors (July 29/30).

For more information, please contact Dr.

The SECRET SAUCE by Brian StarkPersistence is a subject that has been covered by every motivational speaker and inspirational leader throughout history. Why? Because, coupled with courage, persistence is the “Secret

Sauce of Success” in all endeavors; business, ed-ucation, religion, relationships, and of course - per-sonal health.

If you are persistent, and courageous, you will work harder and longer, to stretch, exercise, practice, learn, refine, select better foods, treatments and cures. This behavior creates an energy around your GOALS that moves everything into place for your success. As a direct result, you will have a better chance of creating optimal health, and spreading that health to others around you.

During the dark days of WWII, when London seemed about to be lost, Winston Churchill inspired the British people, saying: “Never give in. Never, never, never, never...”

Everything in our lives is connected, and everything matters! Our career relies on our physical well be-ing. Our romantic life can be hindered by financial challenge. Our spiritual life is under attack from the

time pressures of family, etc. Creating optimal health requires a constant, courageous effort, to make a better life for ourselves and those we love. To defy convenience, convention, “value”, and sometimes even logic, and insist on standards WE KNOW are best for us, financially, spiritually, physically and emotionally. Unhealthy options are all around us. They are fast, easy, deceptively attractive, and can be - at least temporarily - satisfying. NEVER GIVE IN! Be persistent and courageous! Make a habit of making healthy choices. Those choices will lead you to the life of your dreams. These tools are in us all, and they are useful in all areas of life. Learn to push harder. Ask more questions, different questions. Think. LISTEN. Try again. Focus. Consider another approach. Don’t worry about what others will think. ASSUME you’ll be successful, and see yourself in the position of enjoying your achievement. Get in the HABIT of being persistent and courageous, in even the smallest corners of your world, and watch your world open up! The habit of courageous persistence can help you glide through challenges effortlessly, that stop others - automatically. Persistence and Courage are the SECRET SAUCE of successful people everywhere. Practice, perfect, and create your own unique recipe! Dress up every one of life’s tossed sal-ads with your own Secret Sauce. Use extra - this Sauce has no calories, no carbs and no fat! Life can be nutritious, delicious, and extremely satisfying, when served with persistence and courage...YOUR SECRET SAUCE! Brian D. Stark is a Real Estate Financier. Arts and Culture

“Paint it country” by Geneviève Garand

As a contemporary artist, she is passionate about the country culture as much for its style of living than the historical purpose. She creates artworks in today’s colors with the comfort of yesterday. If she paints since her childhood, she learned with many and different artists, went through many subjects and tried many mediums. She uses today pastel, acrylic and oil paint. While being inspired by many subjects throughout her travels, Gene is also inspired by music. Gene has developed her style to include the use of many techniques and mediums and, as a kind of refuge; she uses pure colors to express herself. Her choice of colors and pronounced contours present a variation to meanings and elements expressed in each of her works; giving objects her individualized perception. “I especially like painting portraits where I can fuse the unique expressions of each person into my paintings”, Gene explained. Being a huge country music lover, Gene has created a unique collection of country music artwork. As a highly talented portraitist, Gene has painted portraits of country music legends including Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Loretta Lynn, Wanda

Jackson and others… She has travelled extensively with these paintings to attend their con-certs and have them autograph by the subject of her paintings.

“I can’t tell which one I prefer. I do not consider me as a groupie but a country music fan. I consider I paint not only the legend but his/her music too.”And for many of these excellent legends of country music that we have had and who have left their impact on country music, she have painted them on the different scenes of the Grand Ole Opry, that she calls her Garand Ole Opry (Garand is her name). She tried to mix Grand Ole Opry members, singers that have left marks on their own specific eras as well as her favorite. Gene received the The Arts Club of Montreal gold medal for this collection.Contact information: Geneviève Garand, genegarand.com; Telephone #: 514-712-5909; email: [email protected] / Gene was born in Grand-Mère, Quebec (Canada) in 1980.

Inspiration for the Year Ahead...Fall is here… and like the countless colorful leaves on the trees, we once again discover a vast variety of calendars from which to make our choices. Popular not only for personal enjoy-ment and planning, calendars also rank high on the list of reasonably priced gifts that brighten the receiver’s life all year.

Stepping out from the crowd of inspirational desk calendars, the award-winning Inner Re-flections Engagement Calendar offers an irresistible array of stunning nature photography . . . Mountain meadows at dawn, the surrealistic colors of a delicate blue poppy, a gently cas-

cading stream in a quiet forest, the impossibly elegant poise of a butterfly amidst a swirl of white seed pods, cute little furry crea-tures of the wild, and awesome feathered friends in flight. All this, and more.

The dazzling images alone would make this calendar a wonderful gift! However, the publisher has taken it one step further by per-fectly matching the photos with beautifully expressed insights from the writings of Paramah-ansa Yogananda – author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi – transforming this cal-endar into a delight for the soul as well as the eyes.

“The brilliant images and pow-erful quotes in the Inner Reflec-tions calendar are an amazing reminder of our place in the uni-verse . . . boosts our confidence

in the pursuit of why we are here and making the world a better place.” ~Thomas Katovsky, copub, Healthy Referral Newspaper see ad. p 17

Astounding News Major Hollywood Film Studio Being Developed Norcross, GA. Ask for the Country Inn and Suites on your next stay (see ad p.12) June 2014, Recently, Jacoby Development Inc., which redeveloped Atlantic Steel into Atlantic Station, announced its intention to purchase and redevelop the 170-acre OFS Brightwave (originally Western Electric/Lucent) facility at I-85 and Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross. Its proposed Atlanta Media Campus & Studios will transform much of the sprawling cable/fiber optics manufacturing facility, once one of the largest em-ployers in metro Atlanta. With major technology advancements, the facility produces almost as much fiber op-tic cabling today with just 10 percent of the personnel it once required. The now largely vacant complex — 90 acres under roof — has been an economic drain on Norcross and Gwinnett County. In 1969, the announcement of the original Western Electric facility was groundbreak-ing. However, it will certainly be eclipsed by Jacoby’s vision to create one of the largest movie studios and media campuses in the country, rivaling Hollywood. The initial estimates of the project are staggering: 1.2 million square feet of movie production facilities, including seven initial sound stages, with just under 2 million square feet of class-A office and institutional space. The balance of the campus is to include retailing, multi-family housing and hospitality space. This will set the standard for high-quality urban (re)development in Gwinnett. An economic impact analysis reveals just how significant this project promises to be. The value of the property will move from an assessed $19 million to just under $1 billion. The television and movie production facilities will deliver 1,000 direct jobs to Gwinnett, with an additional 9,000 direct jobs at total build-out including the office towers.

Music NotesFollow Your Dreams: A Violinist Quest for a Healthier Life By Myles A. Smith (Humble G tha Fiddla) During my years as a teenager I grew up overweight, quiet, shy and awkward. At one point I weighed over 300 pounds. I would often retreat from social settings so that I would not have to deal with the shame and hate. The bul-lying and constant harassment did not add to my own personal self-confidence. Music helped me to find peace of mind. I started to play the violin

to uplift my spirit and give me a healthier outlook on life. My violin performances have been for President Barack Obama, at the U.S. Tennis Open, Schools and numerous venues. Tera Buerkle with the U.S. Tennis Open stated, “Humble G wowed the U.S. Open audiences.” I am inspired to bring

more “Hip Hope” into the industry. I had to prac-tice a healthier lifestyle, lose weight and take control of my future in order to be a top perform-er in the world. I changed my diet and I started to working out everyday. Despite all obstacles I will achieve my goals in music and life. It all starts with playing sweet music on the strings of a healthy spirit, mind and body. Contact: Email: [email protected] and Website: http://humblegthafiddla.com/ (216-355-7505)

You DO have power over your health!-Tom Frazier-raw foods chef and whole foods advocate

A friend said recently that one of the saddest things she’s heard her adult son say is, “I guess she should have called Tom”. Her son had just lost a friend his age (29) to cancer. My friend asked me, what do we need to do to get the word out about how effective a simple change in lifestyle can be? How many people have to die of their own habits? We ARE what we eat. As Dr. Robert O. Young says in THE pH MIRACLE, “Our body is alkaline by design, and acid by function”. Genetics is not the cause of dis-ease or other mal-functions of our body. We bring on our own dis-ease through our lifestyle habits. Dis-ease is a systemic reaction to those hab-its that evidences itself locally in an organ or system; when the symptom is ignored, it becomes more irritating until the symp-

tom manifests in a bigger more emergent way. Our society has turned upside down; we rush through our days eating unhealthy foods, some in packages claiming “organic”, “healthy”, “fat-free”, “low sodium. The result of our lifestyle is that we have become over acidifi ed. Our lives are out of balance and we are paying with our health. I would be happy to answer the questions racing through your mind right now. Call or write to me at the contact information listed below. But for purposes of the article, you need to know that the waste products created in our body from lifestyle habits such as eating or drinking the wrong things, smoking, and the toxic chemicals we voluntarily put on our skin, (our largest organ!) are very acidic. Acidic. The opposite of what we were designed to be. The principal of reclaiming your health doesn’t start on your plate or a trip to the food store, but rather in your thought processes. My clients often DO realize that their dis-ease state is a result of their own habits. The next step is to realize that new habits will reverse dis-ease; changing your thoughts can change your health! Very applicable here is Deming’s statement that “It is not necessary to change, sur-vival is not mandatory”. The reverse of that, of course, is your change in thought and lifestyle habits will create your ability to survive your disease. To get results you FIRST need to change how you think about the problem. Please write to me at [email protected] or call me at 440-313-8883. I look forward to talking with you.
