CAA Toronto Chapter holds meetings
The Toronto Chapter of the Canadian Acoustical Association has pub- lished its 1982-83 activities program. It includes plans to change from a three meetings per year to a four meetings per year calender. The first meeting of the season was held 13 September 1982 at which time three papers on Music and Acoustics were presented. The next three meetings will be held in December 1982 (a social evening), January 1983 (a technical visit), and in April 1093 (an er•vironmental acoustics meeting).
Acoustooptics meeting in Poland rescheduled The Second Summer School on Acoustooptics, originally scheduled to
be held in Gdafisk, Poland, 25-30 May 1982, was postponed due to recent events in the host country. The organizers hoped that it will be possible to hold the Summer School in 1983. A new date was set recently for 24-29 May t983, again at the University of Gdafisk. Further information can be obtained from A. S. Sliwifiski, Institute of Physics, University of Gdafisk, ul. Wita Stwosza 57, 80-952 Gdafisk, Poland.
Congress on Biological Effects of Noise to be held in Italyune 1983
The International Commission on Biological Effects of Noise has an- nounced details of the Fourth International Congress on Noise as a Public Health Problem: Biological and Behavioral Effects. The congress is to be held 20-25 June 1983 in the BIT-ILO Center of Turin, Italy. The official language of the congress is English; simultaneous Italian translations will be available. In addition to the invited and contributed papers on research and applications, major discusssions are planned on governmental and indus- trial needs and problems. Other discussions will be held on ways to develop procedures that will permit practical solutions both for governments and for industry. Inquiries should be addressed to Professor Giovanni Rossi, Department of Audiology, Via Genova 3, 10126 Torino, Italy.
Symposium on Mechanics of Hearing to be held in Delftuly 1983
A "Symposium on Mechanics of Hearing," jointly sponsored by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and the International Commission on Acoustics (ICA), will be held in Delft, 13- 15 July 1983. Approximately 30 invited papers will be presented on recent theoretical and experimental work concerning (i) the mechanical movement of eochlear structures, (ii) related physiological questions, and (iii) the me- chanics of the middle ear and external ear. While all aspects (models, mea- surements, and mechanisms) of these subjects will be covered, the emphasis will be on mathematical modeling. The members of the scientific committee are Prof. E. de Boer (Chairman), Sir James Lighthill, Dr. E. A. G. Shaw, Prof. C. R. Steele, and Dr. M. A. Viergever (Secretary). The Symposium is associated with the 1 lth International Congress on Acoustics which opens in Paris on 19 July 1983. Further information can be obtained from Dr. M. A. Viergever, Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Delft Univer- sity of Technology, P.O. Box 356, 2600 AJ Delft, The Netherlands.
Nonlinear acoustics symposium .to be held in Japan--1984
The 10th International Symposium on Nonlinear Acoustics will be held at the International Conference Center, Kobe, Japan, 25-28 July 1984. The main theme of the symposium will be "Basic and applied developments in nonlinear acoustics." Four major sessions are planned on nonlinear phe- nomena, underwater applications, applications to other acoustics fields, and miscellaneous (cavitation, radiation pressure, streaming, and other nonlinear problems). Applications for attendance should be received by 31 January 1984 and manuscripts for abstracts are due by 31 March 1984. Further information can be obtained from the symposium chairman, A. Nakamura, Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research, Osaka Univer- sity, 8-1 Mihogaoka, Ibaraki, Osaka 567, Japan.
China considers acoustical standards
During a recent nat)onal meeting the Acoustical Standards Committee introduced nine drafts of recommendations for standards to be submitted to
the Agency for National Standards of the People's Republic of China. In most cases the sources for the drafts are ISO publications and previous Chinese drafts. The drafts are based on acoustical parameters and units which reflect the national policy to convert to SI units. These are incorpo- rated in the draft dealing with units. The other eight recommendations are concerned with definitions of relative units, frequencies used in acoustics, intensity of sound and noise in air, sound and vibration analysis, urban noise standards, urban noise measurements, anechoic chamber attenuation mea- surements, and underwater transducer free field determination. IOA publishes series of 1982 proceedings
The Institute of Acoustics (U. K.) has available proceedings of the following Institute meetings held during 1982: Acoustics 82 (University of Surrey, March); Noise Nuisance Assessment (Birbeck College, February); Noise Control in Factory Buildings (Darwin College, May); Design and Use of Acoustics Test Rooms (Birbeck College, June); Auditorium Acoustics and Electro-Acoustics (University of Edinburgh, September). These and various proceedings of meetings held in previous years are available from the Institute of Acoustics, 25 Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH 1 1HU, U. K.
Hearing Aid Audiology Group formed in Great Britain ,
In response to a renewal of interest in the formation of a Hearing Aid Audiology Group within the British Society of Audiology, the council of BSA has agreed that such a group should be formed. Among the aims of the new group are: to raise standards and status of hearing aid technology and practice; to promote education programs and courses for those interested in hearing aid audiology; to encourage overseas contacts and the interchange of knowledge of current international hearing aid audiology. Further infor- mation can be obtained from G. G. Harris, 63a Upper Pyle Street, Newport, Isle of Wight PO30 1UL, U.K.
