Six Days and a Floodby Larry Riekenberg

Six day creation! Really? World-wide flood! Seriously? Many churches and Christian leaders are not even asking the question anymore. They have compromised the authority of the Word of God by giving in to the contemporary ‘scientific evidence’ supporting the secular, evolution-ary concept of uniformitarianism.

Often we are told to stick with things we know, like relationships, morality, and maybe even sin and salvation, but leave the scientific stuff to the experts, as though sci-ence and the Bible are opposed to each other.

This study will look at the human inventions that are not only atheistic evolution but are also schemes created by churches and Christian leaders that allow for millions and billions of years that somehow are supposed to fit into the biblical account of God’s creation.

The events at the time of Noah’s world-wide flood are es-sential in our understanding of the

forming of the fantastic world we live in. We are called to give an account of the hope that is in us. Our defense is not only against the secular world, but also with misguided believers who unwit-tingly have been led into conflict-ing ideas that are devoid of biblical evidence. The Scriptures have the answers, which will equip us to do the work God has for us.

This four week study taught by Larry Riekenberg will be-gin Wednesday, October 28.

Barbara Wissink was baptized October 4, 2015.

Barbara Wissink was born February 11, 1937 and lived in Pal-myra with her parents who were not church attenders. At an early age she wanted to go to Sunday school, but was not allowed to go.

Her parents moved to Lincoln when Barbara was 15 and she began working for a family doing housekeeping and childcare. It was then that Barbara met Lam-bert. They dated about a year and then married on December 3, 1954 at Havelock Christian Church. Barbara and Lambert attended church, but were not completely satisfied and felt that they were

missing something.They started attending In-

dian Hills Community Church in 1980 after their two sons, Orval and Dean pleaded with them to come and hear Pastor Gil as he taught God’s Word from the Bible. Lambert and Barbara were excited to be in a Bible-teaching church, hearing God’s Word clearly explained, and they decided to stay. Gil’s teaching every Sunday gave them a new excitement to study God’s Word and get a deeper understanding of the gospel. They also enjoyed the fellowship of like-minded believers.

In March of 1981, Barbara prayed with her son Dean, to receive Christ as her Lord and Savior. In January of this year, Lambert went home to be with the Lord. They had been married for 60 years. Barbara trusts her Lord for strength and guidance, and she desires to live her life to please Him.

Angie Duval was baptized October 4, 2015.

Angie Duval says, “I was born in Lincoln to my parents Gordon and Rita, but was raised by my mother and step-father, Chuck. I have one, younger half-sister, Jennifer.

I have lived in Lincoln my entire life, graduated from Lincoln South-east and UNL. I am married to Ben Duval and we have two daughters, Stella, 4, and Sylvia, 2. I began at-tending Indian Hills when I first met and dated my husband in 2006. I currently am involved with both the Wee Care Children’s Ministry and Women’s Brunch Break.

Growing up, I recall hearing the Gospel story, having a general-ized knowledge of sin and its eternal consequences. I believed that God was the creator of everything around me. I knew that my mother and step-father had given their lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, but I didn’t see my own sinfulness.

I, after all, was a “good child” growing up, for the most part pleasing the adults around me and conduct-ing myself in a manner that I felt was

worthy of their love and affection. During my childhood years, I felt ex-ceptionally loved and happy but in the early stages of adolescence I began to encounter feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, discouragement, anxiety, unworthiness and guilt.

The reasoning behind these feelings was difficult to understand especially since my home life seemed so healthy and positive. It was during this time that my biological father re-entered my life after nearly a decade of minimal contact. I became embar-rassed by my “broken family” and struggled with anger and resentment towards a father who had left our fam-ily and hurt my mother so profoundly. The brokenness that I felt was real, but it was not a result of the actions of my father.

While in complete denial, I could not see that the real problem I was facing was the brokenness of my sin and my refusal to acknowledge my need for the true and sovereign God in my life. As the years unfolded, the pain I felt from abandonment at such a young age was at times overwhelm-ing, but God was faithful in drawing me to Him through those years.

In the fall of 1991, my grand-father passed, and for the first time in my life I found myself thinking about the certainties of life and death. Knowing that my grandfather gave his life to Christ, I wondered if I would ever see him again. My mother took that opportunity to share Christ’s fin-ished work on the cross and what that act meant for those who placed their faith in Him. It seemed fairly easy to believe in the idea that God loved me, died for me and rose to Heaven, but

Ben Duval was baptized October 4, 2015.

Ben Duval says, “I was born into a Christian home with believ-ing parents who loved me, but more importantly, who loved and feared the Lord. As early as I can remember, my parents were reading me Bible stories before bedtime, praying with me, teaching me Bible verses, and teach-ing me what obedience meant. All of that planted a seed in me, which was watered almost daily.

I came to know and accept Christ personally as my Savior when I was 6 years old.

My family and I were visiting my grandparents in South Dakota

surely my sin wasn’t to blame for His death. I had spent my entire life try-ing to “live” righteously, even when others had “wronged” me. I felt that I had “accepted” Christ based on my belief of His work, not my sinfulness or my need for His grace.

The summer of 1995, I was about to enter my sophomore year of High School and spent a week in Dal-las, Texas on a church youth group mission trip. On the final evening of the trip, a worship hour was held in which there was a Bible study and the sponsors shared their testimonies. As I listened to accounts of lives being transformed through the message of the Gospel, my own heart felt heavy with guilt. I could no longer deny that I was the sinner Christ had died for. I knew I was on my way to Hell.

That night I came before God in prayer, pleaded for forgiveness, and gave control of my life to Him. Through the Holy Spirit’s presence, I began to feel a desire to read God’s Word and discover what it was that He expected for my life. Although I had read the Bible, its words had never carried much significance to me. Now when I read it, it is as if God had personally written every word for me.

One of the biggest obstacles I faced before coming to salvation was the anger, bitterness and resentment I harbored in my heart towards my father. I knew that as a “new crea-ture” in Christ, I was called to forgive my father, to surrender complete control to God for all the unanswered questions, and to pray for him and his salvation.

Since coming to accept Christ as my Savior, I have a deepened desire to know God more intimately through reading His word and committing time to Him in prayer. I find myself viewing all of life through a “biblical lens” and wanting to approach spiritual discus-sions with fellow believers. I find en-couragement in hearing how the Lord has transformed His children’s lives.

for Christmas. On Christmas Eve in 1986, I was about to go to sleep on the couch in the basement when my father came to pray with me and tuck me into bed. Before we prayed, I asked him what my older brothers and sisters had that I didn’t. I knew that they, and my parents, had something more; they were different in some way. My dad explained that they had prayed and invited Christ into their heart to forgive them of their sin; that they all had personal relationships with Jesus. He went on to explain how I was a sinner and nothing I could do (works) could save me from my sins. I was on a path to hell apart from Christ. But, I had a way out, through Christ’s saving grace. He shared several verses with me on that subject, some of which I had already memorized. I remember thinking, ‘Wow, that makes sense and I really want that!’

That night, I prayed with my dad and invited Christ into my heart. I fully believe that I was saved at that moment and received the Holy Spirit to help me start my sanctification pro-cess. I might not have known all the depth of what my decision meant, but through God’s word and people pour-ing their lives into me, disciplining me, I would soon come to find out.

From that point forward, and by God’s grace, my sanctification process started. I spent quite a bit of time reading the Bible and memorizing verses. I had a lot of support from my family, Indian Hills, and Lincoln Christian School, which were all blessings in my life. I had very little opposition to my faith and very lim-ited challenges until I got to college.

I went away for college to play

baseball, and I was out of my comfort-able Christian ‘shelter.’ While grow-ing up, almost all of my friends were Christians. When I got to college, I was around very few Christians. I found a church to go to, but didn’t get plugged in as much as I should have. I was fairly stagnant in my faith and my walk for the first two years of college, with very little growth. But, God re-mained faithful to me and through the Holy Spirit continued to prod me even though I wasn’t being faithful.

God used baseball and several difficult circumstances and trials in my college years to strengthen my faith and walk with Christ. He had to affectionately ‘bang my head into the wall’ a couple of times so that I could see my hard-headed mistakes.

He ultimately took baseball away, and planted me in a new area. After baseball was over, I was able to get more plugged in to a local church and helped start and lead Bible stud-ies at the University of Arkansas. I was also able to focus on school and graduation, which God used to bring me back home to Lincoln to work with Dad.

Since coming back home, God has blessed me with a wife, Angie, and two beautiful daughters. He used marriage and children to further teach me to be selfless. It’s not all about me anymore! I’ve been blessed to get plugged into IHCC, sitting under Gil’s teaching, sitting under Jim Mooberry’s teaching in our Common Bonds class, serving at Awana, teach-ing children’s Sunday school classes, and sharing Christ with people I come across in my personal and business life.
