The visual arts department at Sacred Heart Academy

recently hosted the Annual Spring Courses Art Exhibit,

highlighting creative works from over 200 Sacred Heart

Academy students.

“We’re excited to have such a diverse array of artworks

on display at one time. Each artwork is a visible milestone

of student growth and risk-taking. As a collection it

represents the depth and breadth of a curriculum that

is responsive 21st century visual expression, concepts,

and material use, while fully appreciating the value of

traditional skill development.”

Paige Hammons ’17 was named as the 2016-17 Gatorade Kentucky Volleyball

Player of the Year. Hammons is the third Gatorade Kentucky Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Sacred Heart Academy. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Hammons as Kentucky’s best high school volleyball player. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter led the Valkyries to a 40-4 record and a state championship this past season. A 2016-17

Under Armour First Team All-American, Hammons is a member of the U.S.

Women’s Junior National Team and was named Miss Kentucky Volleyball by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association.

The swim team took home its fifth

consecutive state title. The Valkyries won six of 12 events and finished with 372.5 points. Senior Brooke Forde finished the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.87. Forde also set a state record in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.68. Junior Tonner

DeBeer won the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.02 seconds and the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.94 seconds.

Forde and DeBeer led the way for Sacred Heart, swimming legs on the victorious 200 medley and 400 free relay teams. Tonner

DeBeer, Sophia Miller, Allison Bauer and

Brooke Forde won the 400-yard freestyle relay and nearly broke the state record set by Sacred Heart Academy last year.

Forde was named both the outstanding meet competitor and the Midway University

KHSAA Female Student Athlete of the Year. The team also celebrated their coach, Jim

Luebbe, who was honored with the Tim Cahill Outstanding Coach Award.

The swim team always has a ward-robe theme for the state championship meet and this year they wore red boxing robes with

white trim as a tribute to Muhammad Ali. The back of their t-shirts read, “Float like a butterfly, swim like a Valkyrie.”

Learning differences coordinator, Emily Metzger-

Puffer, was honored with the Irene Casey Catholic

Inclusion Award. This award honors the spirit of Irene Casey, an elementary school teacher dedicated to meeting the diverse learning needs of students in Catholic education. Puffer received the award during the annual Catholic Schools Week Mass celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Puffer served as an English teacher at Sacred Heart for 12 years before becoming the school’s learning differences coordinator.

The Board of Trustees of the Ursuline

Education Network, has announced that the following Sacred Heart Academy students received 2016 Community Service

Awards: Anna Maria Beck ‘17, Madeleine

STUDENT Spotlight

Do you see yourself as a leader or follower? Why?

I see myself as a leader. I have fulfilled several leadership positions at Sacred Heart, such as leading the Student Advisory Board, leading the peer tutoring program my sophomore and junior year, serving as a student council representative, and completing business and technology classes such as entrepreneurship and convergent media.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means serving as a positive role model to others. It’s not about controlling people or even just getting things done. Leadership is about displaying something people can look up to.

Who are your role models? What have you learned from them?

My biggest role models are my parents. They have different personalities, so that has shaped me in various ways. I am most similar to my dad when it comes to personality. He is a hard worker, and he devotes so much to helping his clients. He is a great business leader. I look up to my mom because of her caring personality. She can befriend anyone she meets and is such a positive influence in my life.

My teacher and student council moderator, Ms. Ferch, has also been a role model for me. She has displayed a great deal of leadership through her kindness and compassion toward teaching her students, her love for Sacred Heart, and her ability to speak well in front of others. She acts like a friend to us rather than just a teacher.

Future plans for study? How did you decide to pursue?

I have decided to major in Sport and Entertainment Management at the University of South Carolina, in the College

of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management. I may decide to double major in another business career, and I am also thinking about law school. I decided to pursue a career in business because I admire my father’s work, and I have a passion for finance and marketing (after taking business classes while at SHA). South Carolina offers the third best program in the country for my major, so I know I will receive an excellent education.

What is the most exciting thing you’ve accomplished over the past year?

I would say the most exciting thing I have accomplished is receiving my acceptance letter to the University of South Carolina. I was so happy to open the letter knowing my future was official, and that I got accepted to the program of my choice.

What has been your proudest moment while at SHA?

I would say my proudest moment would be placing second in the JA state entrepreneurship competition. It was awesome being able to use my school project for an outside competition and place so well.

What’s the biggest risk that you have taken?

I took a risk when I ran for the Student Advisory Board. I was unsure if I would win the election, or if I would even be good for the role, so I was a little apprehensive.

If you could pick three people to spend the day with, living or dead, fictional or fantasy, who would you chose and why?

1) Emma Watson — I really admire her fight for feminism.

2) Ellen Degeneres — I think she is hilarious, and I think she would be fun to be around.

3) Indra Nooyi — She is a powerful female CEO, and I admire her work ethic.

What one word best describes you?

Convivial

What is your favorite Sacred Heart Academy tradition and why?

My favorite tradition is the distribution of roses. I think it is significant how we start with one rose at freshman Mass and end our time at SHA with a dozen at graduation. It is symbolic because it displays how we have grown over the years, and we receive more opportunities to flourish.

What has your time at SHA taught you about people?

My time at SHA has taught me how supportive people can be. No matter what I do, I have support from someone in this community.

What makes SHA special?

Sacred Heart is special because of all the opportunities it provides. There is something for everyone. A person, no matter their interests, has a place where they fit at SHA.

What would you tell current students about their remaining time at SHA?

I know it is cliche to say that time flies, but it really does. Current students need to truly cherish their time, because it is gone before you want it to be. I would tell them to work as hard as they can in school, go to every spirit cup event, make as many friends as possible and go on senior retreat. I would also encourage them to take classes they are unsure of because they may be surprised which ones they will love and thrive in.

Senior Emily Perrone was part of a SHA entrepreneurship team that placed second in last year’s JA Startup Pitch Competition. The shark tank-style event was sponsored by GLI Enterprise Corp, Kentucky Innovation Network and Junior Achievement. Emily, along with teammates Louise Allison '17 and Gabriela Kelley- Vásquez '17, took home the prize for Leatherlets. This experience, along with Emily’s passion for business and technology classes, has set her on a path to study finance and marketing at the University of South Carolina.

Congratulations

Mary Jo Gleason has been a longstanding and dedicated member of the Louisville Brandeis School of Law for many years- first as a student, then an employee, and finally, a dedicated public servant.

From 2003 - 2007, Mary Jo served as director of the public service program. Her mission was to instill in law students the notion that a lawyer’s creed should be “make things better.” She believes lawyers have a professional obligation to help others, both in their jobs and through public service. She lives up to that obligation in all that she

does. Her curriculum vitae paints an accurate picture of a woman who has lived a life of service to others and whose choices in her professional, personal, and family life honor the values of a Catholic education. She has contributed to the local community in countless ways, through direct service and in the ways she has inspired and facilitated others to serve.

A strong woman of great faith. A Valkyrie living the Ursuline values of Community, Reverence, Service and Leadership.

1960On January 18, 2017 in the Courier Journal's editorial

section, Bob Heleringer wrote an excellent article celebrating Rita Tackett Yates and her time as principal at St. Aloysius Catholic grade school in Pewee Valley. Rita, now retired, had such a positive impact on both the students and their parents that as Bob reflected, "she had a winning trifecta for nurturing, inspiration and discipline." This article should make us all proud of our Catholic education, especially of our four years at Sacred Heart Academy.
