What is a heat pump water heater?

• Very simply, a machine (heat pump) that moves heat from the surrounding air into the water you use for showers, laundry, etc.

• Picture an air conditioner sitting on top of an insulated tank that holds the heated water.

• It also has standard electric resistance heaters in the tank so it could be used like a normal hot water heater.

benefits

• Much more efficient (cost effective) than a standard hot water heater.

• Cools the area around it.

• Dehumidifies the area around it.

• Very easy to change modes; also has a very convenient “Vacation” mode.

• May also qualify for a tax credit due to its energy efficiency.

Cost savings

• Hot water is the second largest energy user in the typical home after space heating (the furnace).

• Cost of Standard Electric water heater - $400 - $700.

• Cost of Heat Pump water heater - $1,200 - $3,000

• Standard Electric water heater - 1 kWh of electricity produces 1 kWh of hot water;

• Heat Pump Water heater – 1 kWh of electricity produces 2 to 2-1/2 kWhs of hot water.

• If you spend $400/yr with a standard water heater, you would spend $160 to $200/yr with a heat pump water heater.

• Average life of a water heater is 13 years, so depending on efficiency, you could save $2,600 to $3,120 over the life of the unit.

• This would more than pay for the GE GeoSpring 50 gallon heat pump water heater.

Issues & Questions

• Is it noisy? Yes. 45 to 55 decibels, about the same as a refrigerator.

• Can any plumber do the job? Yes. Installation is basically identical to a standard water heater.

• If replacing a standard heater with a heat pump heater, should capacity stay the same or increase? My experience says stay with the same capacity.

• Are the HPW available on the floor of the big box stores as good as something special ordered? Yes. My GE GeoSpring 50 gallon is available at both big box stores in this area.
