Year 11 Interview Day
On Friday 10th November we welcomed to Heathside over 30 volunteers from a range of careers and companies to support our Year 11 Interview Day. Our volunteers helped inter-view every Year 11 student for a position they had chosen and then provided them with valu-able feedback to support their interviewing skills. Students arrived outside the sports hall, many with nerves at the thought of having their interview. Watching from afar I could see students quickly relax into the flow of their interview and leave with an increased confi-dence about their interviewing skills. Volun-teers commented that our students were a credit to themselves and the school. We look forward to organising this event again next year.

Trustees and Local Advisory Board celebrate Heathside’s Summer 2017 exam results with staff
Dear Parents/Carers The last couple of weeks have been extremely busy with trips and school events. These have included: students going on a residential trip to High Ashurst; Year 12 experiencing road safety driver awareness “Safe Drive Stay Alive” at the Dorking Halls, drama students performing at the Shake-speare for Schools in Leatherhead; Year 9 attending the Careers Fair at Esher and our medic UCAS applicants attending a mini multi interview day at St George’s College. The U15 Girls’ football team won the Senior Team prize at the Elmbridge Sports Awards held at Walton for their fantastic achievement of coming runners up in the final of the Girls’ U15 Schools National Football, held at Derby County. In addition, Holly Dunford, currently in Year 13, won two awards on the evening: one for her rowing and also Sports Personality. Holly has also been shortlisted, as the world junior rowing champion, by SportsAid in the annual One-to-Watch Award along with 9 other of Britain’s brightest young sporting prospects. This will be announced at the chari-ty’s SportsBall in London on Thursday 23rd November. Whether Holly wins this award or not, it is an excellent achievement and honour to be chosen in the top 10. Events taking place at school were the Year 11 Interview Day; Senior Maths Challenge and Inter House Sports. Thanks go to all the members of staff who arranged and helped with the above trips and events. I would also like to give special thanks to all the parents and members of the community who gave up their time to support the Year 11 Interview Day last Friday. The feedback was excellent, from both the students being interviewed and those conducting them. I am pleased to announce the result of the Parent Advisor ballot for the two vacancies to serve on the Local Advisory Board – Dr Varsha Khodiyar and Lucy Roberts. With Year 11 mock GCSE exams due to start at the beginning of December, if you are a Year 11 parent/carer, please support your son/daughter by encouraging them to focus on their revision and preparation for their lessons at this important time. Arkwright Scholarships
The Arkwright Scholarships Trust is a char-ity that identifies, inspires and nurtures future leaders in engineering and tech-nical design. Arkwright tackles its aim by awarding prestigious Engineering Scholar-ships through rigorous selection to high-calibre students from all educational back-grounds to support them through their 'A' levels.
This year 1594 students applied for the scholarship nationally with 425 being awarded. Heathside had the most success-ful year to date with 5 applicants and 2 of those being awarded. Daniel Thompson is one of our current Scholars…

The Arkwright Scholarships Trust is a regis-tered charity that identifies students with strong talent in engineering, computing or technical design, and matches them with sponsors from industry and the armed forces.
Mr May put a group of students forward, to take part in a 3-staged process – involv-ing a written application, an aptitude test and an interview at Imperial College Lon-don. If you were successful, we were matched with a sponsor.
Given my own background in sailing, I was paired with the 1851 Trust, which is the Official Charity of Land Rover BAR, the British America’s Cup team led by Sir Ben Ainslie, the 4-times Olympic gold medal-list. The Trust aims to inspire and engage young people to better futures by provid-ing them with the education and opportu-nities to become innovators of the future and stewards of the environment.
The awards ceremony took place at the beginning of November, at the IET in Lon-don – and was a prestigious occasion. All the scholars met with our sponsors before a formal presentation ceremony, and hav-ing photos taken.
With this sponsorship, I will have lots of work experience over the next two years with them, shadowing their teams as they design and develop the next campaign boat for the 2021 America’s Cup race.”

House Charity
This year the Sixth Form will be holding a charity
week during school lunch-times on Monday 27th
November – Friday 1st December. Each form
group will be holding a special fundraising event
in order to raise lots of cash for our House Chari-
ties! Please make sure that on that week, bring
lots of cash, so that we can raise money for
great causes as well as have fun and compete
for prizes!

tion. My house captains:
Alessia Lazzari, Ellen Mon-
day and Jessica Thomas
were fantastic in helping
us run the competition. I would also like to say
another thank you to Thomas Chandler, Joseph
Monday and Braydon Tanner in Year 9, who
helped to run it during Lower school break. The
captains had a £50 target. With your help, they
raised almost £90!

Library news
Congratulations to two further successes this
term as both Rachel Samuel (9KE) and Isobel
Turnbull (8BC) have completed their bronze
level in student librarianship.
Rachel and Isobel have worked well over the
last few weeks to secure this level, learning
library duties and software, assisting students
in their book choices and helping with the
book sale and during literacy lessons. Both
girls were also involved in the LRC open even-
ing event which saw Isobel concocting potions
and Rachel dressed as a unicorn!
Isobel and Rachel will be moving onto the
silver level which will see them building their
library knowledge and enhancing their cus-
tomer service skills and creativity. Well done
Izzy and Rachel!

LRC House Christmas Card competition
Remember to get your submissions in! You
have until Friday 24th November to get an A5
entry for the Christmas card competition. We
are so excited that it is going to be commer-
cially printed and sent by Mrs Cullum to our
Local Advisory Board, ElmWey Trust members
and local leads of
schools. You can
enter as many times
as possible. We
would love to see
lots! Get designing
and creating!
Anti-Bullying Poster Competition
We love creativity! There is an Anti-bullying
poster competition running this week, so
please make sure that you get your entries in!
More details will be discussed in form. There
will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th prizes given, and of
course, points for entry. We look forward to
seeing your new designs for this campaign!
Previous student success
We were extremely pleased to be updated on the progress of Elliot Wakefeld this week, who left Heathside after his GCSE exams this sum-mer. Elliot is currently on a two year catering ap-prenticeship at the Savoy Grill, one of Gordan Ram-say’s restaurants in Lon-
don. Travelling to London every day, Elliot is learning from those already successful in the catering world, whilst also attending college one day a week to gain additional qualifica-tions. Having met Gordan Ramsay himself, Elliot is thoroughly enjoying his experience and the opportunities it brings. It was really lovely to hear about the progress Elliot is making and we look forward to seeing this continue in the years to come.

Sixth Form Art Workshop
This week the Sixth Form art classes were
fortunate to meet and attend the workshop
of Nathalie Scott. Having attended a briefing
a week prior to the workshop gave us an
indication of the style and quality of
Nathalie’s work and were also able to talk to
her on a personal level. During the briefing
she gave us clear guidance on the factors in
which to consider before beginning her
workshop the following week, including can-
vas sizes as well as information regarding the
composition of the photo being used.
Nathalie was very approachable and made
the class feel comfortable to ask her ques-
tions about her own work as well as about
our own. In addition, she took an in-depth
look through our sketch books and we were
able to tell her what our intentions were for
the upcoming pages, which she seemed ex-
cited to hear about.
Prior to beginning
the workshop, we
were told to sketch
our designs onto the
canvases using the
grid method, this
was proposed by
Nathalie as being the
best way to achieve
the correct proportions.
After taking a few hours out of my Tuesday
night, I realised drawing a proportionate,
straight lined grid on a canvas using a 15cm
ruler was easier said than done.-and I’ll have
you know that pencil does not rub off a can-
vas easily! However, I finally finished my
sketch and my canvas was ready to go for
the following day. Walking into the art room
never seemed more daunting as today we
were to take a class from a professional
artist. We were lucky to have had the paints,
palettes and brushes already prepared for us
and we were ready to get started. Nathalie
greeted us and briefly circled the classroom
to check our sketches were proportional and
correct, making any
minor adjustments
sooner rather than
later. She then gave
us three colours as a
guidance and an-
nounced to “start
mixing your skin col-
our”.
I’m sure it wasn’t just
my heart that dropped
at the thought of
getting this wrong and
completely embarrass
yourself, however
Nathalie individually
guided us into the
tones and colours
needed which gave me
a sense of assurance.
On the other hand, Miss Tidy was very sup-
portive with the motto “don’t worry, you can
always paint over it” – thanks miss!
As the day progressed, there was a great
working environment to concentrate and get
on with your painting, and having a box of
cookies on the table didn’t distract one per-
son in the room… Snacks aside, Nathalie con-
stantly rotated the room giving each individ-
ual tips and advice regarding tones, paint-
brushes and how to create texture. Having
such an experienced figure in the room to
support you was an experience I would be
more than happy to do again and I think this
session helped me greatly. As well as this, I
now have a canvas painting which highlights
skills I didn’t realise I had! So a big thank you
for Nathalie Scott for being such a great influ-
ence and guide for the workshop!

Milly’s Garden
If any keen gardeners are busy tidying up their gardens and thinning out their plants, I will happily take any spares for Milly's gar-den. After Christmas we hope to start grow-ing plants in school. We have a group of Year 12 volunteer gardeners who can plant them out in the spring. If you enjoy growing plants from seed and taking cuttings and can spare a few please contact Miss Barker.
