Musings from the Pastor

The article started out, “Watch your back, Usain Bolt — there’s a new 100-meter dash superstar and she looks unstoppable.” In the article, I learned about Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins, who just a few weeks ago set a new record in the USA Track and Field Outdoors Masters Championships. The thing about Julia is that she is 101 years old! Julia bested the old record by more than six seconds, bringing the new record to 40.12 seconds for women over 100 years of age. The article went on to say that this is not even her ‘Personal Record’ of 39.62 seconds. If this record is certified this De-cember, it will be the fastest 100-meter dash by someone over 100 years old in the world! What amazes me about Julia is that she continues to look forward to each new day and each new adventure. This former school teacher says of her own kids, “Having a momma that can do this pleases them, and it pleases me to please them.” As I thought about Julia, two things struck me. One is that she continues to push herself forward in life, which reminds me of how the Apostle Paul says, “…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Heb. 12:1,2) As people who believe Jesus is the answer to all of life’s questions/problems, let us continue to serve him with as much effort as we can. The second thing that struck me is that by doing her best, Julia said that it pleases her that what she does pleases her kids. One of the aspects of being a soldier for Jesus, our commander and leader, is that what we seek to do will please him. All that we say and do should be done to glorify him as Jesus did everything he could so that we could be with him forever in heaven. So in less than two weeks, to serve and please God, we will have an outdoor service (Aug 13) at Epley Park, just down the street from the church. We have created an “Easy Invite” for you to invite friends, families, and neighbors where there will be a welcoming service and then , food and fun following the service. Please do your part and invite some people to attend with you and experience the wonder of God and the fellowship of believers. Who knows, your invitation may help someone get back in touch with God. Know that I am praying for you to run your race and be the person God created you to be so God is both pleased and glorified in you!
Blessings on our journey together,
Pastor Paul

Special “Easy Invites” This Summer
This summer presents many opportunities to invite a friend, family member or anyone that you meet to join with HUMC in service and fellowship. Keep in mind these special events, along with the Summer Sermon Series to ignite a conversation and to invite a guest. About 80% of all people will come to church, only if invited by a friend. Be a friend this summer and ask someone to an event.
