I have a younger brother, Brian, and younger sister, Gina. Both live with their families in Pulaski. I graduated from Pulaski County HS, attended UVA and graduated with a Math degree. After graduation, I worked exclusively in the computer programming and technology field. I was with EDS (Ross Perot’s company) for 11 years living in Detroit, Dallas, Indianapolis, and Richmond, then finally landing back in my hometown at Pulaski Furniture. I started my own company, Internet Databases, in 1999. We built web sites and web services for the home furnishings industry. I sold that business in 2013 and went to work for the acquiring company. In order to begin my second career in parish ministry at Resurrection Catholic, I left that company this past July. How did I get into ministry? That may be a longer story but here’s the short version. I wasn’t baptized when I married my true love, Allison. However, I went to mass regularly with her and somewhat awkwardly participated. When my older of my two sons, Sam, started preparing for first communion, I felt the marital promise to raise my kids in the Catholic faith was getting serious. Baptism was one thing, but Eucharist was altogether different for a guy surrounded by evangelical Protestants growing up. I was encouraged to go to RCIA to learn a bit more. I loved it. So Sam and I received first communion the same year. Very cool. I went back thru RCIA two more years; once because I liked it so much and again as a sponsor. After coming into the parish community, I grew in my faith and spiritualty thru great friends at St. Jude in Radford, thru Haiti Twinning ministry, thru regular mass and reconciliation, thru my second son Casey’s participation in the sacraments and as alter server, and thru the Cursillo movement. About 8 years ago, Allison and I decided that a simpler life that included some sort of ministry was in our future. This started us down a path that in hindsight, was certainly guided (prodded, controlled, persuaded) by the Holy Spirit. Allison began teaching at Roanoke Catholic, I discerned the diaconate and was ordained last year, we sold our beloved first home in Christiansburg and began downsizing (which continues to this day) into a tiny condo in downtown Roanoke and a tiny condo at SML. Sam is now entering his 2 nd year at University of Virginia while Casey is starting his 11 th grade year at Roanoke Catholic. Now, I, with my family, am starting a new chapter. It’s clear I am supposed to be at SML and Resurrection but it is an ongoing adjustment. I am comforted by all the love and support I am receiving from the Resurrection folks and thank God for the blessings of leading me this far.

Meet Deacon Barry I’ve begun to get acquainted with many of you but there are many I’ve yet to meet but hope to soon. In the interim, I thought I’d share a bit of my story in our newsletter. I was born in Martinsville, but grew up in Pulaski, Virginia. My parents, Buddy and Neecia Welch, still live in Pulaski. I have a younger brother, Brian, and younger sister, Gina. Both live with their families in Pulaski. I graduated from Pulaski County HS, attended UVA and graduated with a Math degree. After graduation, I worked exclusively in the computer programming and technology field. I was with EDS (Ross Perot’s

company) for 11 years living in Detroit, Dallas, Indianapolis, and Richmond, then finally landing back in my hometown at Pulaski Furniture. I started my own company, Internet Databases, in 1999. We built web sites and web services for the home furnishings industry. I sold that business in 2013 and went to work for the acquiring company. In order to begin my second career in parish ministry at Resurrection Catholic,

I left that company this past July. Have you wished you could share your faith experience with friends who, while Catholic, have for some reason fallen away from regular participation in the Church? Most of us can probably answer that question affirmatively. Our Welcome Home Catholics team is ready to help you succeed in getting your friends into an active faith life here at Resurrection! Many of us have extended invitations to friends to “come check us out” at Resurrection. Our Welcome

Home Catholics (WHC) program offers a means for interested Catholics to become reacquainted with Christ and His Church in a non-threatening and welcoming way. Many have used our program to facilitate their return to Christ and an active faith life here at Resurrection over the recent years. Our next series of seven sessions begins on October 27 and continues on night each week, concluding in early December. In the seven 1 ½ hour sessions (6:30-8:00 pm), the following topics are discussed: Sharing Stories of Faith; the Church Today; The Mass; Marriage, Divorce and Annulment; What We Believe and How We Put It to Practice; Reconciliation and What is the “Resurrection Community” All About? We will be promoting WHC in the SML community for the couple months. However, the most

effective means of enticing non-active Catholics back is a PERSONAL INVITATION from members

of the RCC family -- YOU! We will make printed invitations available for your use in inviting friends

to the WHC series. Please be thinking and praying about how you might help a friend take this

opportunity to develop a closer relationship with Our Lord here at Resurrection. Can you imagine a

better Christmas present to give a friend? If you would like more information about Welcome Home,

please talk to one of the following members of our core team: Linda Wilmesher (721-1869), Melissa

Murtagh (297-5530) or Phil Servidea (721-3122).

Welcome Home Catholics

Thank you for welcoming me to your parish! I have enjoyed getting to know many of you and look forward to meeting those I have not yet. I grew up playing music, singing in choirs, and taking piano, harp, and voice lessons. I graduated from Lynchburg College

this past May where I double majored in music performance and convergent journalism. I have played piano for numerous churches in the area and am thrilled to be a part of the community at Resurrection. As a Catholic, playing for Mass is especially rewarding for me, both spiritually and musically. I so enjoy working with the choir members and instrumentalists of the parish! I encourage you to talk to me or attend a rehearsal if you have any interest in being part of the music ministry. I would love to get to know you! Vocalists and instrumentalists of all levels are welcome! I’m excited to meet you! Blessings, Ginny Coffman

The Community of Franciscans Friars

of the Renewal Visit Resurrection

to Lead Parish Mission.

Resurrection is extremely fortunate to host Father Anthony Baetzold, CFR to be lead our Mission on August 20-24. The Franciscans are recognized worldwide for their preaching guided by their whole-hearted embracing of Jesus and St. Francis; and by their mission to evangelize in the Church by preaching and teaching the Holy Gospel.

The goal of our parish mission is to provide each of us a faith-filled experience of God in our lives, leading to personal renewal and conversion. Father Baetzold will preach at Masses on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21. (Parishioners are encouraged to attend a brief meet and greet session for

the Franciscans in Morrow Hall following the Saturday evening Mass.) The Mission itself begins with the morning session on Monday August 22, 2016. Morning

sessions will take place in the Sanctuary at 9 AM each day, Monday through Wednesday; and evening sessions will be at 7 PM each day. Talks at each session will be different and parishioners are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible. Additional details can be found in the parish bulletins of the past couple weeks and on signs in the Commons.

Don’t miss out on Life…Have your Hearing Checked!

Are you turning the TV up on a higher volume, or

asking people to repeat themselves, because you can’t

hear what they are saying? Hearing loss is the 3rd most

common type of health problem in the US. Thirty-six

million people in the US have some type of hearing

loss. Some people do not realize how much they are missing, be-

cause they can’t hear well. Social isolation and withdrawal from

social events could occur, because of the embarrassment of having

to ask people to repeat themselves. Hearing loss can be Conductive, Sensorineural, or mixed. Con-

ductive hearing loss occurs when sound is not conducted efficient-

ly through the outer ear canal to the eardrum, and the tiny bones

(ossicles) of the middle ear. With this type of hearing loss, the

sound level is decreased, and one can hear faint sounds. This type

of hearing loss may be corrected medically/surgically. Sensorineu-

ral hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the inner

ear (cochlea), or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the

brain. Unfortunately, this is the most common type of hearing loss,

and can’t be corrected medically/surgically. Mixed hearing loss is

a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Aging, for some unknown reason, is the major cause of hearing

loss. Some of the causes of conductive hearing loss include: infec-

tions, ear wax, perforated ear drums, or some kind of obstruction.

Signs of hearing loss are: you can’t hear or understand what other

people are saying, you increase the sound on your TV and phone

so you can hear. You might think the person is mumbling, or you

hear ringing in your ears. Hearing loss is detected through an audi-

ogram. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Hearing aids

may be able to improve one’s

hearing. If you are not hearing

well with your current hearing

aids, see your audiologist, or the

company you bought your hear-

ing aids from, because adjust-

ments can be done to improve

hearing. Earphones or listening

systems are available that allow

you to hear the TV, radio, or

church services.

In the spring of 2016, the Haiti Mission committee asked the parishioners of Resurrection for their input on a seven question survey. Our committee wanted to get input from the parish on the workings of the committee, but also to clarify some of our work to insure that all parishioners understood the projects that we are involved with as a parish. We were very pleased to receive 265 surveys. The majority of the results were positive (thank you!) and some questions presented us with the opportunity to give more clarification about our mission. The following is a brief summary of a few of the questions. We thank you for taking the time to answer the questions and supporting the children with food and education for these many years!!!! In the future the committee will present these results to the Pastoral council and possibly a bulletin insert. Resurrection sends teacher salaries to the teachers at the Educational Complex of the Good Shepherd, the Salesian sister’s orphanage and home. Resurrection sends $2,880.00 a month for 12 teacher’s salaries, which is $240.00 a month for per teacher. This twinning effort has been going on for about 4 years. At Melissa’s Hope orphanage, our parish sends money on a monthly basis for food for the children and staff. This outreach project is a home for about

20 children with special needs. The home provides education and specialized care for the children on a daily basis. The home also runs a weekend camp for neighborhood children, where they are fed one meal as well. Resurrection sends $1,000.00 a month to support meals for these children. The typical cost of one’s travel to Haiti is about $1,200.00. Each qualified parishioner is entitled to a request of $500.00 reimbursement, plus a $50.00 a day per diem. This helps defray the cost of the trip and hopefully will encourage more participation. Committee members will work with anyone with an orientation about Haiti and provide support to any qualified parishioner prior to going on a pilgrimage to Haiti. This support comes from our funds of Mission support and does not come out of any money that is given to the church from our parishioners for support of our twinning work. We hope this helps answer any questions that parishioners of Resurrection have about the work of this committee. The committee is honored to represent all of Resurrection with this life-changing work that all of us should feel very proud about on daily basis. Continue to pray for the children and friends we all have in Haiti! If you have any further questions do no hesitate to contact any member of the committee. Terry Jones chairperson HMC

Youth Faith Formation (YFF) is eagerly preparing for the 2016-2017 Faith Formation year! RCC has age appropriate Faith Formation classes from Preschool to 12th grade every Sunday from

5:15pm-6:15pm. We show children the love of Jesus through word and deed, through the sacraments,

service, the traditions of our faith, and through the Holy Scriptures. Our Catechists use active

teaching methods, like games, role-playing, crafts, discussion, and multimedia presentations.

Middle and High School have been transformed! They will be using a new format of Youth Group and

Catechesis in ONE: The program is called “Edge” for Middle School (6th-8th) and “LifeTeen” for High

School (9th-12th). Help your Middle or High School youth become the leader that he/she is called by

Christ to be!

Aug. 28th, 5:15pm Our second Youth Faith Formation POTLUCK,

Second graders receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion, and 10th graders receive the Sacrament of Confirmation during their formation year. (If your child missed a sacramental year, that’s ok! See Melissa and she will work with your family in order to prepare!) Second graders and 10th graders will have a few additional classes in order to prepare for their Sacraments. More information will be handed out at the parent meeting on August 28th.

Back-to-school can be a busy and exciting time of year for the youth and educators of our parish. It can also be difficult adjusting to changes and new teachers. Deacon Chris has left some very big shoes for me to fill as the new high school catechist but I am excited about the challenge and opportunities that this change brings. Youth group and the high school class will be joining forces this year to promote fellowship and faith through the Life Teen program. We’ll also be introducing social and issue nights with the high school and middle school classes through the new programs. While some things change, some things remain the same. We will continue our successful youth ministry of caring throughout the year, visiting and continuing to build relationships with our parishioners who are residents at Runk & Pratt, as well as continuing our service days, celebrations, retreats and conferences. I hope you’ll join us in our faith journeys this year. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 Lisa Lietz

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) The RCIA is the process by which adults interested in full initiation into the Catholic Church have the opportunity to inquire into its teachings and to reflect on their readiness for entry into the Catholic faith community. This program is for people who have not been baptized, people who have been baptized in other faith traditions and for baptized Catholics who never completed either Confirmation and/or Eucharist. After an initial inquiry period, candidates join sponsors in deeper exploration of the Catholic faith through reflection on the Sunday readings. The process culminates in the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, & Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil, where the candidates are welcomed into full membership in the Catholic Church. Inquiry sessions are year round. The RCIA team strives to involve the faith community in weekly discussion topics with RCIA candidates. Sessions are led by Mary Flynn, and Pat and Frank Amarosso. Interested parishioners are invited to join our team either as presenters or sponsors. Classes will be held on Sunday afternoons from 2:30 – 3:45pm beginning September 11, 2016. For further information, contact Father Sal or Deacon Barry at 540-297-5530 Mary Flynn 540-728-1046 or Pat/Frank Amarosso 540-296-0904.

It’s a little over two months until the 18th Annual Fall Craft Bazaar sponsored by Resurrection’s Wednesday Women’s Group and featuring over 35 indoor and outdoor vendors. The big day is Saturday, October 15th this year and the bazaar hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Just 9 weeks until the tan-talizing aroma of apple pies float through the air tempting prospective bazaar shoppers on a chilly October morn! Laden with homemade delights of all types the Bake Sale Table at the bazaar is a very popular stop, but it’s success is greatly dependent upon bake sale donations from our Resurrection parishioners. Please consider baking and donating any type of homemade bake sale item: cookies, cakes, breads, jams, jellies, and pickles are just a few suggestions. You may bring your baked or canned good(s) to Morrow Hall on Friday, October 14th - or even on the day of the bazaar! All proceeds from the bake sale, after ex-penses, are donated to the parish staff and

ministries for non-budgeted items, such as equipment, parish nurse health care needs, religious education supplies, etc. The three raffle items this summer have been well received: a stunning hand-painted 50th Year Commemorative SML cooler, a 50th Year SML Commemorative Wine Basket, and the very popular doll house. Sales of raffle tickets will continue both before and after Masses every other weekend in August, but beginning on Sep-tember 3rd raffle tickets will be sold every weekend. Tickets can be purchased singly for $2 each or a book of 3 tickets for $5. The drawing will be held on October 15th upon the close of the bazaar. Winners will be notified by phone. The Wednesday Women truly appreciate your support every year and hope you pop in on Saturday, October 15, 2016, to make this year’s bazaar the best ever!

Please keep entry free! The entry into the carpeted worship area from the Commons is narrow. Please keep moving through that space before Mass to allow others to have easy access to the Worship Area. Thanks from the Pastoral Council.

Blessing during Communion Jesus invites all people of faith and good will to invite Him into their hearts. If age or circumstance prevents you or your guest from receiving sacramental Communion, you are invited to approach the altar for a blessing. Please indicate this desire to the Minister of Eucharist by crossing your arms over your chest.

Visit us on the World Wide Web! Our website is awesome! Along

with a calendar of events and meetings, you will find past weekly bulletins, past issues of Heavenly Hash, Parish Council

minutes, Ministry Schedules, and information on the many activities and ministries of RCC. Go to: http:www.resurrection catholic.org and see for yourself!

Cell Phone Request So as not to disrupt the priest and those around you, we are asking that parishioners please silence cell phones before entering Mass or leave them in your car.

Weekday Mass Schedule Mass is celebrated every Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with this exception. Fr. Sal has a committee meeting in Richmond on the second Thursday of each month. On those Thursdays a Communion Service will usually be held at 11:00 a.m. However, Fr. Sal will offer an 11:00 a.m. Mass on Wednesdays on those weeks.

Singles - “Life for One” Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at Trinity Ecumenical Parish. This is a group of singles looking for informational programs and fellowship. For more information call Gail Meltzer 721-1448.

Communion to the Homebound If you or someone you know is homebound (short or long term) we have a group of EM’s to visit and bring Communion. In Franklin Co. call Dave Wilmescher (721-1869). In Bedford Co. call Mitzi Kelly (297-8307).

Roanoke Area Ministries Many thanks to all who give their time to RAM House. Substitute volunteers are needed to serve lunch on the 1st and 5th Wednesday of each month. Please call Eleanor Self at 583-1355.

Gift Card Program Please consider participating by signing up for the Kroger Community Awards Program or

purchasing a Food Lion, Walmart or CVS Gift Card. This is a fundraiser that costs you nothing!

Please see the volunteers in the Commons before Mass.

Lake Christian Ministries RCC’s normal assignment is now personal items such as laundry & dish detergent, shampoo, and toothpaste. Items can be dropped off at the church during office hours or at weekend Masses or at LCM from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Catholic Reading Service Catholic magazines are now available in the back of the church. Weekly and monthly editions of both spiritual and informational periodicals are ordered for your inspiration and enjoyment. Please use the payment envelopes in the magazine and/or on the stand and leave your payment in the basket provided.

Mission Statement

Recognizing the call of Jesus to His followers to continue His mission and ministry, we, the people of Resurrection Parish, with our unique backgrounds, talents and energies, seek to be the instruments through which He can express Himself to the world - particularly to the community surrounding Smith Mountain Lake. We strive to nourish personal and spiritual growth by providing opportunity and support for prayer, renewal and a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. Through the celebration of the sacraments, the preaching of the good news of God's kingdom and the acceptance of our social mission to serve the basic human needs of others, we stand before our neighbors and the world as witness to the life and resurrection of Jesus.
