THE MOST STRINGENT DEMANDS

The most important market trend is the demand forplates with increasingly higher strengths, a demandthat will definitely continue to rise over the next fewyears, for example with a view to enhancing thetransport capacity of oil and gas pipelines withoutneed to enlarge the wall thicknesses. Further require-ments are high toughness, hardness and good weld-ability. At the same time, ever closer tolerances arebeing demanded in respect of dimensional accuracyand flatness.

MODERN PRODUCTION PROCESSES

Today, thermomechanical rolling is the most impor-tant production process for the manufacture of high-strength plates. In this method, the temperatures arespecified and set exactly for finish-rolling and for cool-ing in the plate-cooling systems. The Posco heavy-plate mill is so far theonly one worldwide to be designed forplates with a width of up to 5,300 mmover the entire process line. With thistwo-stand facility, the South Koreansteelmaker has expanded its capacityby 2.5 million tons per year. Posco'sCEO emphasized the significance of therolling mill at the time of its inaugura-tion: “Posco has become an undisputedworld’s largest steel plate manufacturerwith the completion of this thick steelplate plant in Gwangyang. This factorywill relieve supply shortages in domes-tic industries such as shipbuilding, andcontribute to increasing global competi-tiveness of clients by providing theworld’s best quality thick steel platesefficiently when needed.”

At Posco, we have installed a two-partspray cooling system for the first time.It operates over the whole length withhighly efficient spray nozzles and pos-sesses two pressure ranges. Thisenables Posco to achieve very highcooling rates and to flexibly implementthe various cooling strategies. To ensuregood flatness also at high cooling rates,the plate is guided between wrapperrolls in the high-pressure range in thefront part of the cooling system. A pre-leveler ensures that the result of thecooling action is not impaired by anyunevenness in the rolling stock.

CHINA'S FIRST

5.5 M MILLSTAND

The heavy plate mill at Angang SteelCompany went into operation in August2008. The two-stand mill line consists ofa 5.5 m roughing stand and a 5.0 m fin-ishing stand. The roughing stand wasChina's first 5.5 m heavy-plate millstandand the widest to have gone into opera-tion worldwide for over 30 years. The 5.0 m finishing stand is equipped withour CVC® plus technology.

The roughing stand has a rapid mechani-cal screwdown system in addition to thehydraulic roll-gap adjustment system, soas to enable the roll gap to be openedextremely quickly during the rolling ofingots. The maximum roll force is 105MN. A vertical edger at the exit end ofthe roughing stand ensures the precisesetting of the plate width.

The capacity of the mill is two milliontons of heavy plate per year. The productrange of Angang Steel comprises all ofthe grades required on the market today,including plates for shipbuilding, pressurevessels and containers, high-strengthstructural steels and pipe grades. Itsproximity to the ocean-going port ofYingkou gives Angang Steel good accessto the export markets.

HIGH-STRENGTH PLATES

The 5 m heavy-plate mill from BaoshanIron & Steel (Baosteel for short) hasbecome the standard for a series of fur-ther new plants, thanks to the large num-ber of innovative solutions. The finishingstand was the first heavy-plate stand inChina to be equipped with the CVC® plussystem. An innovation was the combinedspray and laminar cooling. It makes possi-ble a wide range of cooling strategies andthe production of high-strength plateswith economical alloying concepts.

In this cooling system, spray cooling isinstalled upstream of the laminar section.The spray cooling system attains veryhigh cooling rates thanks to a powerfulhigh-pressure water station in combina-tion with special nozzles. To achieve goodplate flatness in the spray cooling also atthe highest cooling rates, pinch rolls areinstalled between the cooling headers toregulate the water flow onto the plate andthus improve the temperature distributionand the cooling efficiency. A retrofittedpre-leveler additionally evens out the cool-ing action.

Our X-Pact® process model controls thecooling curve. It is based on a mathemati-cal-physical process model, which linksthe most important characteristic data ofthe plate with metallurgical parametersthat are stored in the system for all mate-rials. The ideal cooling process is thus cal-culated for each plate.

A PLANT ALL FROM THE

SAME SOURCE

The 5.0 m heavy-plate mill from MMK ispure SMS Siemag technology. We sup-plied the mill with everything, from themillstand to the plate finishing line: thecomplete mechanical system, the automa-tion systems, and the electrics with thecomplete drive technology. With an outputof 12 MW each, the main drives are thestrongest that we have installed so far.The reheating furnaces, the heat-treat-ment line and the roll shop also belongedto our supply scope. The secondary metal-lurgy equipment and the continuous cast-er which supplies the heavy-plate mill withslabs are likewise our products.

MMK uses its heavy-plate mill above all forthe manufacture of plates for large-diame-ter pipes for pipelines. MMK commencedthe production of these grades as early asfour weeks after commissioning of the milland increased their proportion to 100%within six months. MMK produces thesegrades exclusively with the thermome-chanical rolling method. The optimizedinterplay of the pass-schedule model, theprofile and flatness control and the millpacing model allows MMK to perform mul-tiple plate rolling with groups of up to sixplates and thus achieve high productivity.

The multi-part backup rolls developed byus were installed for the first time in theMMK finishing stand. The smaller partweights meant that the long deliverytimes were able to be shortened and theMMK mill thus went into operation by thedesired deadline.

Minmetals Yingkou belongs to one ofChina's leading trading companies forsteel and NF metals and, with the 5.0 mmill, has also become established as amanufacturer of high-quality heavy plate.We supplied both the mechanical equip-ment and the complete automation sys-tems for the mill, at Yingkou in the north-east of China.

With a length of around 1,600 m from theslab furnaces to the plate dispatch area,the Minmetals Yingkou works is verygenerously designed and offers possibili-ties for further expansion. Such futureexpansion possibilities are: a heavy-platearea, a heat-treatment line, a secondshearing line and additional reheating furnaces for slabs and ingots.

The mother plates produced on the two-stand mill line are trimmed to the finaldimensions in the shearing line followingthe cooling and hot leveling. The fourshears process plates of thickness up to50 mm and strengths up to 1,200 N/mm2.All shears operate with the rolling-cutmethod, which guarantees particularlyprecise cuts and clean plate edges. Cropshears and dividing shears are of theenclosed design type. This reduces thedeformation of the housing during cut-ting, which in turn additionally improvesthe cutting accuracy and edge quality.

FAST COMMISSIONING

THANKS TO PLUG&WORK

Hyundai Steel's 5.0 m heavy-plate millwent into operation in December 2009.It is part of the company's new integratediron and steel plant on the west coast ofKorea. The mill has an annual capacity of1.5 million tons and this will be expandedto 2 million tpy by an additional roughingstand in 2013. With this rolling mill,Hyundai Steel is concentrating predomi-nantly on the manufacture of ship plates.

We supplied the mechanical equipmentand the complete automation for the mill.Prior to delivery, the automation systemswere put through the Plug&Work tests.Here, they were tested against the real-time simulation of the rolling process.

The preliminary optimization shortenedthe commissioning time and enabled arapid run-up of the mill. Already after ninemonths, the rolling mill attained 85% ofits nominal capacity. A further benefit:The operating personnel were able tofamiliarize themselves with the millbeforehand by means of training sessionsinvolving realistic operating situations. Themaintenance personnel could also runthrough the relevant scenarios.

The control pulpit in the mill line is charac-terized by its special ergonomic design.The HMI systems are set up in such away as to allow the operator good visibilityand represent the process in a produc-tion-oriented manner, with all relevantinformation.

FOR PIPE GRADES

Vyksa Steel is one of the leading Russianmanufacturers of line pipes. With thenew 5.0 m heavy-plate mill the company,which is part of the OMK Group, canmanufacture high-strength heavy platesat its Vyksa location and process thesedirectly into large-diameter pipes onplants from SMS Meer.

The production of tube steel grades upto strength class X120 places extremelyheavy demands on all plant sections,from the mill line to the adjustment line.The cold plate leveler can therefore levelplates up to a strength of 1,200 N/mm²in a single pass. The machine is con-structed in 9/5 design and, in addition tothe main hydraulic adjustment system,it has hydraulic roll-gap adjustment sys-tems for each individual leveler roll. Allleveler rolls are driven separately, whichmeans that the ideal curvature progres-sion can be set for each plate, throughinteraction with our leveling model. Fur-thermore, the machine can be operatedwith nine and five leveler rolls, thus pro-viding an expanded leveling range. Thechange-over from the 9-roll to the 5-rollmode and vice-versa can be made fromone plate to the next.

For the Vyksa Steel rolling mill we alsosupplied the complete electrical andautomation system including the powersupply, the drive engineering, the Level 1and Level 2 systems and the productionplanning at Level 3.

MORGOIL® BEARINGS

FOR OPTIMUM RUNNING

ACCURACY

The Chinese steelmaker TangshanIron & Steel has decided to commencethe production of heavy plate and istherefore investing in a new 5.0 m millwith an annual capacity of 1.8 milliontons. The mill is designed for plates inthicknesses between 5 and 200 mm andwidths from 1,300 to 4,800 mm. Thehigh-quality product range focuses onshipbuilding plates, pipe grades, high-strength structural plates as well asplates for the construction of pressurevessels and boilers. By increasing thestarting-material weights, the annualproduction can be increased later to2.0 million tons.

The mill line consists of a roughing standwith edger and a finishing stand. Thefinishing stand is equipped with CVC®

plus technology for good plate flatnessand high productivity.

The two millstands each have a maxi-mum roll force of 120 MN. To absorbthese high roll forces, the backup rollsare mounted in Morgoil® roll neck bear-ings of the KLX® series. In Morgoil® bear-ings, an oil film supports the roll neckand keeps it separate from the bearingbush, thus preventing any frictionbetween the metal parts. The KLX®

series is the most recent further develop-ment of the Morgoil® bearings. Thisseries can be loaded to an extremelyhigh degree and ensures optimumrunning accuracy of the rolls with highoperational reliability.

IN CHINA

The Chinese steel group Nanjing Iron &Steel (Nisco) awarded an order to us inAugust 2011 to build a new 4.7 m heavy-plate mill. The order comprises the deliv-ery of a finishing stand with CVC® plustechnology, a pre-leveler, a hot plate level-er and a shearing line. We are supplyingthese components inclusive of the tech-nological X-Pact® automation systems.

The Nisco plant is the tenth heavy platemill to be erected by us in China in lessthan ten years. It is being built in Nanjingand will commence operation in 2013.With this heavy-plate mill, Nisco aims atattaining an annual production of 1.6 mil-lion tons. The product range covers allsteel grades currently demanded by themarket such as tube and pipe steelgrades, ship plates and other high-strength steel grades.

The finishing stand has a roll force of120 MN and is equipped with hydraulicadjustment systems, work-roll bendingand the CVC® plus system (ContinuouslyVariable Crown). In cooperation withSMS Siemag's profile and flatness con-trol (PFC), CVC® enables the productionof plates with close geometrical toler-ances and a high throughput.

MULTI-PART MILL HOUSING

In the 4.3 m heavy-plate mill at Qin-huangdao Shouqin we have for the firsttime installed mill housings in split andbolted design. In this type of construc-tion, it is only on the jobsite that the finish-machined mill housing yokes andposts are firmly connected with eachother by tension rods. This approach simplifies casting of the mill housing,cuts delivery times and makes shipmenteasier. At the same time, a lower degreeof necking under load is obtained throughthe controlled pre-stressing of the ten-sion rods. This results in improvement of the plate running and thus also of theplate geometry.

Four years after the start of production,the second construction stage went intooperation in 2010 with a roughing standand the second shearing line with dou-ble-side trimming shear, slitting and divid-ing shears and a cold plate leveler. Theannual capacity of the 4.3 m mill is thusaround 1.8 million tons.

Qinhuangdao Shouqin Metal Materials is a part of the Chinese Shougang Groupto which, since the year 2000 alone, wehave supplied a continuous slab caster,two hot strip mills, two pickling line/tandem cold mills and several strip fin-ishing lines.

STAND MODERNIZATION

WITH CVC® PLUS

The growing demand for high-quality shipplates prompted Dongkuk Steel to entrustus with the modernization of the Heavy-Plate Mill No.2 in 2008. The mill had beenin operation since 1997 and had originallybeen supplied to a Mexican customer in1982. At that time, we supplied the majorpart of the equipment.

The aims of the revamp were to increase theproduction from 1.7 to 2.0 million tpy, toimprove the plate quality and to lower theminimum plate thickness from 8 to 5 mm.

For this revamp, we equipped a millstandsupplied by another manufacturer with ourCVC® plus technology for the first time.This enables Dongkuk Steel to performhigher reductions especially during the lastfew rolling passes and ensures the adher-ence to narrow profile and flatness toler-ances. We also installed new hydraulicadjustment systems to increase the rollforce to 90 MN.

Dongkuk Steel equipped the finishingstand with our newly developed slipper-type spindles with length compensationfor transmitting higher rolling torques.These spindles enable the work rolls to beshifted and, thanks to their robust con-struction as compared to other spindletypes, have a considerably higher torquecapacity and greater operational reliability.

BAOSTEEL MILL FOR

In March 2008 Baoshan Iron & Steelcommissioned its second heavy-platemill from SMS Siemag, the 4.3 m mill.The mill supplements the product rangeof the 5.0 m rolling mill and is designedfor the production of stainless steelsand special grades.

The 4.3 m mill also has a two-stand mill line with CVC® plus in the finishingstand, a combined spray and laminarcooling system with pre-leveler, a hotplate leveler, a shearing line and a coldplate leveler.

The hot plate leveler is designed forplates between 8 and 100 mm withlow-temperature strengths up to 1,000N/mm². Its leveling force is 34 MN. The adjustment of the upper pressureframe takes place in a purely hydraulicmanner and, in addition, the entry andrunout rolls of the lower leveler roll setcan be adjusted separately. The elasticdeformations in the machine are com-pensated via short-stroke cylinders dur-ing leveling.

Our X-Pact® leveling model is based onthe mathematical-physical mapping ofthe processes in the plate and in themachine. It calculates the adjustment ofthe leveler rolls and the drive torque as afunction of the material properties suchas yield point, tensile strength, modulusof elasticity and plate size.

NEW HEAVY-PLATE MILL

FOR ROURKELA

We are supplying the Steel Authority ofIndia (SAIL) with the process equipmentfor a new 4.3 m heavy-plate mill, fromthe cooling bed to the plate finishing line.The mill is being built at the Rourkelalocation in the province of Orissa andis designed for an overall capacity of920,000 t each year. The later expansionof the mill, with an increase of produc-tion, has already been included in the layout planning.

Our supply scope comprises a disk-typecooling bed and an inspection bed, theshearing line with double-side trimmingshear and dividing shear and, for theplate finishing line, the cold plate levelerin 9/5 design with the leveling model.

In combination with the technologicalcontrol system (TCS), our X-Pact® levelingmodel sets the adjustments of the level-er rolls and calculates the drive torques.When doing this, it considers the proper-ties of the material at the current platetemperature and the plate dimensions.The ideal curvature progression is thusfound for each plate.

For the plate finishing line we shall also besupplying the complete transport and con-veying facilities, the pre-piler, an inspectionbed and a rail-bound car for the transportof heavy plates.

A SECOND HEAVY-PLATE

MILL FOR HYUNDAI STEEL

In May 2011 Hyundai Steel asked us tosupply a 4.3 m heavy-plate mill. The newmill is being built directly adjacent to the5.0 m mill, likewise supplied by SMSSiemag, in the integrated iron and steelplant of Hyundai Steel in Dangjin.

The millstand has a roll force of 90 MNand is equipped with hydraulic adjust-ment systems, work-roll bending and theCVC® plus system. The rolling process is controlled by our X-Pact® automation system. Before the first pass, the pass-schedule model (PSC) calculates the opti-mum pass schedule with the smallestnumber of rolling cycles. After each pass,the remaining rolling steps are recalculat-ed within milliseconds and adapted tothe actual conditions. Thanks to the highprecision of the first calculation, onlysmall adaptations of the set values areneeded. The profile and flatness control(PFC) is part of the PSC and it adapts thework roll bending and the position of theCVC shifting from pass to pass.

The plate cooling system is designed asa purely spray-cooling system with ahigh-pressure station in the front sectionand a low-pressure cooling system in therear section. It makes possible very highcooling rates with good plate flatnessand the ability to implement a large vari-ety of cooling patterns.

IN THE HIGHLANDS OF

MONGOLIA

Baotou Iron & Steel Group is the largeststeelmaker in Inner Mongolia and hasbeen concentrating since the year 2000on expanding its flat-steel production.Thus, in October 2007, following theCSP® plant and a combined picklingline/tandem cold mill, already the thirdfacility from SMS Siemag within sixyears went into operation: the 3.8 mheavy-plate mill.

The main components of the mill are aroughing stand and a finishing stand, theplate cooling system, the hot plate level-er, the shearing line and the cold plateleveler. The plate cooling is designed as a laminar cooling system. This makespossible accelerated cooling and directquenching and thus the manufacture of a wide range of high-strength plates. Further advantages are the simple design,the low energy consumption and the lowcosts of care and maintenance. Laminarcooling is the type of cooling that is the most widely distributed throughout the world.

Following the supply and commissioningof the heavy-plate mill, we are cooperatingwith Baotou Iron & Steel also in the fieldof materials technology and have devel-oped a concept for the manufacture ofhigh-strength tube steels that is speciallyattuned to the Baotou process chain.

TWO YEARS FROM THE

ORDER TO THE FIRST PLATE

A mere 24 months from the order to thefirst plate made the construction of the3.8 m heavy-plate mill for Xinyu Iron &Steel become a special challenge. Toimplement the project in this short timewas only possible thanks to our greatexperience on the Chinese market.

In the first construction stage, the millpossesses an annual capacity of 800,000 tand it can enhance its production to 1.2 million t by an additional roughingstand. The product mix comprises a widerange of steel grades, from simple carbonsteels to shipbuilding steels, pipe gradesand steel grades for manufacturing pres-sure vessels.

A hydraulic edger is flanged on at the exitend of the finishing stand in order toimprove the width accuracy. This edgeroperates with a roll force of 4,500 kN. Aspecial control system for the edging pass("short stroke") ensures good rectangulari-ty at the plate head and tail ends and thusimproves the yield of the mill.

CVC® PLUS FOR

HEAVY-PLATE STAND

The Swedish steelmaker SSAB Oxelösundspecializes in abrasion-resistant and high-strength steel plates, which are in demandabove all in heavy mechanical engineeringand in the building industry. With a view toincreasing the capacity and improving theplate quality, SSAB placed an order withus in 1995 to build a new 3.7 m four-highmillstand and a hot plate leveler. The newheavy-plate stand was the first millstandworldwide to be equipped with CVC® plustechnology.

CVC® plus is an integrated system and isbased on the combination of work rollbending, axial shifting of the work rollsprovided with the special CVC grindingpattern, and the technological processmodel PFC (profile and flatness control).The PFC calculates the shifting positionand the bending force for each passunder consideration of the roll force, thusenabling the profile and flatness to be setexactly, even for thin and wide plates. Furthermore, CVC® plus enhances theproductivity because it allows high thick-ness reductions, above all for the finalrolling passes.

In addition, we supplied SSAB with a drumshear for cutting the plates after roughing,a pre-leveler, the automation for theMulpic cooling system, and a cold plateleveler. This is installed in the heat-treat-ment line and it also levels extremelywear-resistant plates, which are marketedby SSAB under the trade name of Hardox.

AND HOT STRIP

At SSAB North America (formerly Ipsco)we implemented a plant concept for thefirst time in 1997 which makes it possibleto manufacture heavy plate and hot widestrip on one millstand. Using the Steck-el/Plate rolling mill, SSAB North Americacan adapt its production to the marketquickly and flexibly.

The mill line comprises a Steckel millstandwith an edging stand flanged on at theentry end. The initial passes are simplereversing passes. As from a thickness of25 mm the rolling stock is coiled into theSteckel furnace and thus kept at thecorrect temperature during the last fewpasses. The millstand is equipped withCVC® plus, thus enabling the profile andflatness of plates and strips to stay withinnarrow tolerances.

On the millstand, SSAB North Americacan produce plates up to 600 m in lengthwhich, after rolling, can be cut by a divid-ing shear "on the fly" to the maximumcooling-bed length of 74 m.

Besides the rolling mill, we supplied thesteelmaking equipment and the continu-ous caster for the works in Montpelier inthe US federal state of Iowa. With a widthof 3,048 mm, the caster is one of theworld's widest and produces slabs with athickness of 152 mm. Directly after cast-ing, the slabs run through the walking-beam furnace and are then fed into themill line. Thanks to this close combinationof casting and rolling, the plant is charac-terized by a low energy consumption.

COMPACT WORKS

COMPLEX

We have built a new works complex for the production of heavy plate and hot strip in Casablanca (Morocco) forMaghreb Steel. We supplied the com-plete plant engineering, including theelectrical and automation package, forthis works which comprises an electricsteelmaking plant, continuous slab cast-er, 2.8 m heavy plate mill and twin-standSteckel mill.

The heavy-plate mill and the Steckel mill receive their slabs from the samecontinuous caster and are arranged suchthat the heavy-plate stand can be usedfor plate production and as a roughingstand for the Steckel mill. This conceptgives Maghreb Steel the required flexibil-ity for adapting the production to themarket demand.

The heavy-plate stand is equipped withour CVC® plus system. The finish-rolledplates are first cut to cooling-bed lengthby a hot dividing shear downstream ofthe millstand. They then pass throughthe hot plate leveler and, following thecooling bed, they are cut to final dimen-sions in the finishing line.
