Quick Facts:

• The results and coaching registers in this section are based solely on the varsity race in each of the regat-tas against United States collegiate opponents. Since the resumption of crew in 1911, the result cited refers to the varsity eight race. Races rowed prior to the twentieth century were in fours without cox, except for the Intercollegiate Regattas in Saratoga, N.Y., which were raced in sixes without cox. Results from regional row-ing championships are not included in win-loss records.

• Princeton fashioned its first undefeated head-to-head season of the modern era in 1997, finishing 9-0. The Tigers also won their second EARC Grand Final in three years.

• Heavyweight crew is one of two sports in which freshmen are ineligible to compete on the varsity level. The other is lightweight crew.

• In 1870 six undergraduates decided to begin their own “navy” and bought two “old six-oared gigs” from Yale. It is reported that one sank to the bottom of the canal the first time out, but the other floated and so gave birth to the sport of crew on the Princeton campus.

• The Delaware and Raritan Canal was the first home for Princeton racing shells. In 1903 a crew alumnus named Howard Russell Butler 1876 persuaded Andrew Carnegie to buid a lake for Princeton rowing. Lake Carnegie was dedicated in 1906. Later, the Class of 1877 was convinced to give the money for a boathouse on the lake. In 1972 a long-awaited year-round training facility became available with the construction of the enclosed rowing tank. It was built next to the boathouse and was the result of gifts from some 300 alumni and friends.

Heavyweight Crew 2

• The varsity crew competes for several cups throughout the year. They include: the Logg Cup, against Rutgers, first presented in 1962; the Navy-Princeton Cup, against Navy, first presented in 1942 and awarded retroactively to 1913; the Carnegie Cup, against Cornell and Yale, first presented in 1921 and awarded ret-roactively to 1911; the Compton Cup, against Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, first presented in 1933; and the oldest intercollegiate cup race, the Childs Cup, against Pennsylvania and Colum-bia, first presented in 1879.

• Perhaps Princeton’s greatest heavyweight crew took to the water in 1985 under the head coach Larry Gluckman. After finishing second to Harvard at the EARC Sprints, Princeton won its first of three IRA titles. That win earned the Princeton boats a rematch with Harvard at the National Championships in Cincinnati. In one of the most exciting races in Princeton history, the Crimson edged out the Tigers by a mere half-sec-ond. The race was featured on the pages of Sports Illustrated (June 24, 1985). Harvard triumphed a fourth time over Princeton at the Henley Royal Ragatta later that summer. Following Henley, Princeton surprised a strong international field in Lucerne, Switzerland, finishing ahead of three European national teams.

• The heavyweight freshman eight has won the school's "Class of 1921 Crew Trophy," awarded to the boat on the heavyweight, lightweght or women's teams with the outstanding performance of the spring, in 1984 and 1988.

• In 1995, Princeton celebrated the 50th anniversary of the EARC Sprints by winning its first championship, finishing 3.74-seconds ahead of second-place Northeastern in the Grand Final. Princeton also won the Rowe Cup, awarded to the institution with the best overall score at the EARC Regatta, for the first time. The Tigers won the Grand Final again in 1997 and 1999 for the championship. Princeton won four consecutive Rowe Cups from 1995-1998.

• In 1997 Princeton recorded its first undefeated season in 116 years with a 9-0 overall record. The Tigers won national championships (IRA champion) in 1996 and 1998.

• In 1985 Princeton won the Ten Eyck Trophy, which is awarded to the team with the best overall perfor-mance in the varsity, second varsity and first freshman events at the IRA Regatta.

• The crew program has produced several Olympians. Most recently in the 1992 Summer Games in Barce-lona, the Olympic tradition was carried on by Doug Burden ’88, who won a silver in the four without cox, and John Parker ’89, who rowed in the U.S. eight shell. Burden also won a bronze in eights at the 1988 Games in Seoul.

• In 1999, head coach Curtis Jordan was named to FISA's Competitive Rowing Commission. He served a four-year term and at the time was the only American on the Competitive Rowing Commission. He had been a U.S. National Team coach 12 times, including the three previous Olympic Games. In 1996, he coached the men's lightweight four to a bronze medal in Atlanta.

• Chris Nilsson served as interim head coach while Curtis Jordan took time to train the national team for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. In that year, the Tigers finished second at the Eastern Sprints and third at the IRA championships.

• The lengths of race courses have varied over the years. Since 1968, races have been standardized at 2000 meters, the Olympic distance. Prior to then, races at Lake Carnegie were usually 1-3/4 miles. Races on the Housatonic River in Derby, Conn., and Lake Cayuga in Ithaca, N.Y., had generally been 2 miles. Races on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia were at the Henley distance of 1-5/16 miles. Races on the Severn River in Annapolis, Md., varied between 1-5/16 to 1-7/8 until the 1930s, when the standard length became 1-3/4 miles. Races on the Harlem River in New York were between 1-1/2 and 1-3/4 miles. Races on the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass., varied between 1-1/2 and 2 miles until 1927, when the race length was estab-lished at 1-3/4 miles. The length of the EARC Regatta has been 2000 meters since 1947. The IRA Regatta was raced at a length of four miles until 1947, when the distance was shortened to three miles. In 1950 and 1951, the IRA race was only two miles, due to flooding.
