    Overview

ELV (End of Life Vehicle) was created in the EU to promotereuse, recycle & recovery of passenger cars at the end oftheir life, & reduce the amount of carcinogens entering

    landfillsApplies to vehicles

    IMDS (International Material Data System)

    Internet database

Mandated by most OEMs to store individual component MDSs (MaterialData Sheets)

Intent is that the MDSs are entered by the supply chain at thecomponent level

MDSs are submitted to & approved by the customer

IMDS enables companies to demonstrate compliance to the ELVDirective & other global materials legislations

What do we have to report?

Anything that remains in product at point of recycling

Process chemicals that are removed are not needed

Total composition (%wt) of every component in theturbo has to be reported

    Material specification

    Weight of component

Each component has its own Material Data Sheet (MDS)

    Material specification

    Weight

other info ( such as source of information, supplier name)

Company Administrator Individual for authority within company and user registration

Deal with password issues, create new users, user modifications

Generally the person who registers their company first (can be

changed later) Gives other people access via the Administration site in IMDS

User (Publish) Profile : same as user but has publish rights

User (Certification) Profile: sends company certification to OEM ifneeded

User (User ) Profile: individuals with read and write access toYOUR COMPANY section of IMDS

User (Read only): can read data but cannot publish / modifyinformation

    Access to IMDS Data

Users of IMDS only have access to MDS

    1. Created and saved (in edit mode or internally released) by any

    user in their company

    2. Sent/proposed to them from supplier companies

    3. Published or made available to all IMDS users (intentionally or inerror)

For more information on IMDS data security, please read

  • 7/26/2019 HEC IMDS NT Supplier Training 02Sept2013

    20/40

Keep the following information at handwhen you create a MDS

    Part Number

    Part Description

    Material specification (=alloy composition)

It is best to find an IMDS published std with range wider than yourmaterial

    Weight

Customer IMDS requirements (including their IMDS referencenumber)

    Your company IMDS reference number

You will need the above information for each component if youare uploading information for an assembly of parts

    20

    21/40

    Manually Uploading Data

Component : In IMDS terms, a component can be simple part (eg: machined

casting) or a sub-component assembly (eg: casting with other bits attached to

    it).

Semi-component: Something that will become a component AFTER furtherprocessing (eg: machining, cutting)

A casting is a semi-component but after machining it becomes a component

Material: Describes what a component or semi-component is made of

Use the appropriate IMDS Recommendations as Guidelines

    Creating a new MDS/Module

    Datasheet

Can be sent to a customer

Includes fields for supplier ref, customer part #/drawing information

Can be converted to a module by releasing internally in recipient field

    Module

Useful for internal use of information repeatedly

Can be imported into a datasheet and sent to customer

Basic Building Blocks (=Nodes) for MDS

    Component: assembly, sub-assembly, part

    Semi-component (not often used):

something that has to be processed to

    make it into a component

Material: chemical composition or tradename or specification number

    Basic Substance

Types of Data Sheets Data sheet

Used to submit information to customers

Can be used for internal reference if released internally

    Module:

    Generally used for internal reference

Useful to create own material information

    Can re-use information for

    Different customers

    Different assemblies

Both of the above are developed in the same manner

    Building MDS

Add Component: connect new component node toparent node

Add Semi-component (not often used): Connect new

    semi-component node to parent node

Add Material: Search for existing material to connect toparent node

Add Basic Substance (only within a Material Datasheetor module): Search for existing basic substance toconnect to material node

Add Reference (could be component / semi-comp,material ref)

To add a node/reference click on the parent node and then on the appropriate add

    button.

    Own/published MDS

By supplier company Entered and saved (but not necessarily released)

Entered and released by any User in your company

Released from supplier companies and accepted by yourcompany

    General Functions - 2

    Copy Function

Create copies (MDS or Module) from existing MDS or module.

Works like a template and saves creating entries from scratch

Can copy components, semi-components, materials Steps

Search for and find component, semi-component or material

Highlight the component in search window and then select

Copy Copy as New Version: Creates same IMDS ref # but increased

version # in edit mode. Used to revise, correct or update MDS ormodule

Copy as new datasheet: creates new MDS with a new ref # .

Copy as Forward: used to forward MDS from supplier to customerwithout any ingredients data changes other than altering the identityof supplier

    29

  • 7/26/2019 HEC IMDS NT Supplier Training 02Sept2013

    30/40

Forwarding MDS(only if supplier has allowed forwarding to the customer)

    Steps

Search for a MDS that is received and accepted

Right click on search result and select forward (Thereafter complete supplier info (ie your name), your customer info)

Creating a pdf file to send to Cummins toshow MDS is accepted (for PPAP)

    1. Search for MDS sent to CTT (customer code 50009)

    2. Open MDS

    3. Click on pdf file symbol

    4. Select company view for selected report = CTT

    5. Save pdf

    6. Send in PPAP pack to CTT

    Error Checking and Warnings

Can use the on task bar at any timeVERY USEFUL guide

Does not pick up all issues (especially if they are customerspecific)

    Fixing errors / warning

Navigate the screens to check manually or click on error/warningfor guidance and press

Errors need to be fixed before submitting. Cannot submit MDSuntil they are fixed

Warnings need not be fixed mandatorily and you will be able to

publish internally; customer could reject MDSUseful files in Public Pages and/or IMDS news sections

Sending Options to Customer(Send vs Propose vs Internal)

Send a part to a single recipient SEND (most common)

Send the same part to multiple recipients

    PROPOSE

Common but has data control implications as any changes in MDS are sent to allrecipients

Create (secure) your MDS or Module for future use in different sub-assemblies orwithout danger of future editing

    INTERNAL

Send your MDS to all users of IMDS (Avoid!!)

    PUBLISH

Send a part which was internally released

Create a new MDS and import internally released part

    SEND / PROPOSE

Note: Once a part isproposed it automaticallybecomes internallyreleased irrespective ofthe recipients approval

    status

    Receiving MDS from Supplier

Best to use first to see if the submission is free of errors andwarnings

Check that material does not contain prohibited / restrictedsubstances

There are allowances based on applications

    Use ELV guidelines

Check that your supplier has followed your guidelines

    Accept / reject

If you are rejecting, clearly state the reason for rejecting

    Some Tips - 1

When creating a material DO NOT select developmentsample report

Use Published IMDS committee materials whenever possibleIf you struggle to find a common material using ISO,...codes or

material trade name contact the IMDS helpdesk and they will helpyou to find a published material

Ensure that you have put weights when adding component andmaterial information

Ensure you submit your MDS to correct CTT IMDScode=50009

    Use CTT IMDS guidelines
