CSFs for Teaching of Standardization: STANDARD!
• School: Management vs. Engineering• Teacher: Academia vs. Practitioners• Administrative support: Financial, infrastructure,
human resources, etc.• Network of disciplines: Unique discipline vs. Case
study of standardization from multiple perspectives • Degree: Undergrad vs. Masters• Association:
– Students: Student’s internship, student conferences– Academia: Regular academic workshop and conferences
• Reality: Class lecture vs. Experiences • Dream: Career path vision for students

School: Management vs. Engineering
• Engineering school has more students than business school in average
• Management school students perceive similar disciplines to other courses, whereas engineering students feel fresh subjects
• Possible synergy effects with other MOT (Management of Technology) courses

Teacher: Academia vs. Practitioners
• All Korean universities have major instructors from professors
• Some universities have invited practitioners as special guests whom students have appreciated on sharing their experiences
• Combination between academic disciplines and practical experiences are desirable
6
Hee-Dong Yang©, Ewha Womans University
Administrative support: Financial, infrastructure, human resources, etc.
• Standardization is not a major disciplines nor topic in Korea
• Unless professors and students get sufficient support in preparing and offering this subject, class will not get enough roasters
• Supports for teaching materials (e.g., textbook, cases) and for new prep are necessary
7
Hee-Dong Yang©, Ewha Womans University
Network of disciplines: Unique discipline vs. Case study
• Is this subject sufficient enough as independent discipline?
• Which subjects can have this subject as sub-module?
• Isn’t the case-based teaching more appropriate approach to teaching?
• Do we have enough incentives to encourage scholars to develop and publish the cases for classes?
• If not, what kind of systems do we need to develop these incentives?
8
Hee-Dong Yang©, Ewha Womans University
Degree: Undergrad vs. Masters
• Is this course appropriate for undergrad students?
• If yes, what school year students can take this course?
• If case-based approach is more desirable for teaching, is this approach still valid for undergrad students?
9

Association
• For students– Case development contest– Incentives to specialize in this major
(internship, scholarship, degree programs, etc.)• For Faculties
– Academic gatherings (e.g., conferences, seminar, workshops)
– Academic journals specialized in standard and standardization
• In common, who could be the strong sponsors for these events?
10
Hee-Dong Yang©, Ewha Womans University
Reality: Class lecture vs. Experiences
• Students need to experience real practices and observe real operations of standard organizations
• How can we induce students to get involved with real practices for the sake of their experiences with standardization?
• Student participations: – Visiting the standard development organization – Encouraging students to participate in
submitting standard proposals, etc.
11
Hee-Dong Yang©, Ewha Womans University
Dream: Career path vision for students
• What kind of job can students get if they want to specialize their careers in standardization?
• Can they have enough internship opportunities during coursework?
• Do we have enough education and training programs and systems to support their continuous pursuit of this career?
• Can students establish strong vision as life time career in standardization?

Conclusions from Korean Experience
• Standard for standard education is needed: STANDARD could be…
• International exchange program for students:– International faculty exchange program– International practitioner exchange program
• Global sponsorship for positive loop for standard education– Research Case development Teaching
materials Lecturer exchange Sharing experiences and new research proposal at annual meetings (conferences)
