AT 400KV GSS, HEERAPURA
PRESENTATION BY:MNIT, JAIPUR
ABOUT - 400KV GSS, HEERAPURA
first 400 KV GRID SUBSTATION of Rajasthan that was established on December 1986.Rajasthan’s only oil testing laboratory
WHAT IS SUBSTATION ????
Where voltages are stepped up and stepped down
Assemblage of electrical components including bus bars, switchgear, power transformers, auxiliaries etc.
Classified as: Step up substationStep down Substation
SINGLE LINE DIAGRAM?Simply a one line diagram where
line represents Three phases One-line diagram – a diagram that
uses single lines and graphic symbols to indicate the path and components of an electrical circuit.
LIGHNTING ARRESTERSdischarge the over voltage surges to
earth and protect the equipment insulation from lightning and switching surges.
gap less ZnO or zinc oxide surge arresters are mainly used for surge protection.
located at the starting of the substation as seen from incoming transmission lines and is the first equipment of the substation.
ZnO Lightning arresters
Used to carry huge current or behave as an energy pool to which various feeder can be connected.
BUSBARS
POWER TRANSFORMERstatic machine used for transforming power
from one circuit to another without changing frequency.
At Primary Grid substation, Secondary substation, Distribution substation, mostly Step-down transformer is used.
4 transformers at Heerapura-3x250MVA+1x315MVA
=1065MVA(total capacity).Tertiary winding for power supply.
Cooling type : ONAN , ONAF , ODAF
INSULATORSUsed to avoid current leakage through
supporting structure provided to the conductors
Insulators are classified as: Pin type insulators. Suspension type insulators. Strain insulators. Shackle insulators.
Suspension and strain type insulator
Post type insulator on Isolator
ISOLATORSmechanical switch which isolates a part of
circuit from system as when requiredused to make sure that an electrical circuit
can be completely de-energized for service or maintenance
It MUST be operated on no loadTypes: A). Double Break Isolator.
B). Single Break Isolator. C). Pantograph type Isolator.
Single break isolator
Double break isolator
Simple and tandem isolators
CIRCUIT BREAKERdesigned to protect an electrical circuit from
damage caused by overload or short circuitbasic function is to operate during a fault
condition and discontinue the electric flowAccording to their arc quenching media the
CB can be divided as: oil circuit breaker air circuit breaker vacuum circuit breaker SF6 circuit breaker
SF6 Circuit breaker Vacuum
circuit breaker
INSTRUMENT TRANSFORMERused in electrical power system for
stepping down currents and voltages of the system for metering and protection purpose
These instruments transformers are of two types :
a) Current transformer b) Potential transformer
VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERStepped down high
voltage to measurable value
Voltage ratio 600/120Now-a-days ,
Capacitive voltage transformer are used instead of conventional two winding PT
Capacitive voltage transformer
combination of capacitors and inductors act as filter which is used to catch only communication signals and leave the power waves towards load.
CURRENT TRANSFORMER Instrument transformer
used to measure currents of high magnitude.
Secondary current is proportional to primary current
Current ratio 1000:5
WAVE TRAP trap the high frequency
communication signals sent on the line from the remote substation and diverting them to the telecom panel in the substation control room.
The Line trap offers high impedance to the high frequency communication signals thus obstructs the flow of these signals in to the substation bus bars.

This training helped me a lot to understand many practical concepts and helped me to
verify with the theoretical knowledge .But as knowledge has no ends ,
So“Keep learning”
