A mathematical model is an abstract model that usesmathematical language to describe the behaviour of a system
• Mathematical models are used particularly in thenatural sciences and engineering disciplines butalso in the social sciences (such as economics, sociology and political science); physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and economistsuse mathematical models most extensively.
• Eykhoff (1974) defined a mathematical model as'a representation of the essential aspects of anexisting system (or a system to be constructed)which presents knowledge of that system inusable form'.

Heffron-phillip’s Model
• Heffron-phillip’s Model of a synchronous machine is commonlyused for the small signal stability analysis.
• Heffron-Phillips model has been used extensively and manyanalytical conclusions and design methods have been developed onthe basis of Phillips-Heffron model.
• The Heffron-Phillips model of a synchronous machine hassuccessfully been used for investigating the low frequencyoscillations and designing power system stabilisers.
• The parameters of the model are usually calculated using thesynchronous generator parameters and some system variables atsteady-state conditions.
• Heffron-Phillips model of a synchronous machine is commonly usedin small signal stability analysis and for off-line design of powersystem stabilisers.
