History of Earth HourEarth Hour first started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 when 2.2-million households turned off their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change. Today Earth Hour is much more than just switching off lights for an hour once a year. It’s a growing international campaign to encourage people to make sustainable choices in every aspect of their lives and the act of switching off the lights for the hour has taken on symbolic significance. This year South Africans are being challenged to go one step further by publically responding to the question, ‘How do you honour the Earth?’ with the intention of changing the way we behave towards the environment.

“If we all add our voice by sharing our promise, we not only uphold our own best intentions but we can motivate those around us,” says Pedzi Gozo, Executive Manager of Communications, WWF South Africa. “The growing collection of promises forms an inspiring overview of the varied actions that everyday citizens are taking to make a difference.”

Laerskool Stellenbosch het 3 Maart tot 7 Maart 2014 ‘n Kultuurweek by die skool aangebied. Daar was ‘n wye verskeidenheid vertonings vir die gr. 1–7-leerders aangebied. Ons gaskunstenaars was ‘n Gumbootdans groep, Sonja Herold en Tjokker, Storieskip en ons eie talentvolle musiekpersoneel en leerders. Die week is met ‘n intergraad-redenaars afgesluit. Ouers was welkom om die verrigtinge by te woon en almal het hul gate uit geniet!

Die graad 4-7 leerders het gedurende Februarie verskeie kampterreine vir hul jaarlikse buitelugopvoedingskampe be-soek. Verskillende aktiwiteite is vir die leerders aangebied.

Die o/13 en o/11 seuns- en dogterspanne het op 28 Februarie en 1 Maart aan Laerskool Eikestad se dubbelstoernooi, waarby die 12 beste tennisskole in die Boland betrokke was, deelgeneem.

Stellies se gemengde o/13-tennisspan is as die kampioene bekroon en die o/11-span het derde geëindig. Baie geluk!

Die 4 spog-atlete van Hendrik Louw het WP-klere verwerf vir atletiek (Reinhald Vogt o/13 - 800m, Jayden Daniels o/10 - Naellope, Dirja Lekas o/10- Hoogspring en Christian Hugo o/11 - Langafstande). Twee van die atlete, Dirja Lekas (Hoogspring) en Jayden Daniels (Naellope), dring ook deur na die SA Kampioenskappe wat gehou word op 20 tot 22 Maart by Dal Josefat in Paarl.

Die volgende Beaumont spelers is gekies vir die Westelike Provinsie A spanne: o/11 Seuns – Daniel de Necker, o/12 seuns – Jacques Mieny, o/12 dogters – Franzé Lötter, o/13 seuns – Jannick Klein, o/13 dogters – Kira Louw. Die WP A spanne neem van Vry 28 Maart tot Sondag 30 Maart in die Kaap deel aan die Synergy Interprovinsiale Toernooi. Boland, SWD, Noord Kaap en Oostelike Provinsie is ook betrokke.

Beaumont is baie bevoorreg om 5 atlete te he wat gekwalifiseer het vir die Westelike Provinsie Atletiek kampioenskappe. Hulle is Dalvon Blood, Darren Zurnamer, Lilly Sandenberg, Lutho Phumelo en Hanushia van Niekerk. Dalvon en Hanushia het gedurende hierdie byeenkoms hulle WP klere verwerf en gekwalifiseer vir die Wes-Kaap Kampioenskappe. Dalvon Blood het uitstekend gevaar en het gekwalifiseer vir 3 items vir die SA Atletiek kampioenskappe, naamlik, verspring, 80m Hekkies en 200m Hekkies.

Beaumont’s four head prefects for 2014 were announced on Monday after having gone through a lengthy selection process. They are: Ryan Louw (Deputy Head Boy) Mia van der Merwe(Deputy Head Girl) Samantha Smuts (Head Girl) and Dean Bundy (Head Boy). The 33 prefects to serve the school in 2014 were selected early in October 2013 so that they could closely shadow the 2013 prefects in the final term. They learnt to serve their school, to lead effectively and to work as a team so that they could meet the challenges ahead. Earlier this term, the student council attended a special leadership-training camp and, besides the staff’s input, the current prefects were also involved in the head prefect selection process.

Daglig-SpreilignetbaltoernooiDertien atlete verteenwoordig WP in 21 items by Wes-Kaapkampioenskappe.

Vanaf 17-21 Februarie het die 0/13A-spanne van De Hoop aan die Egalite Prestige Laerskole Tennistoernooi by Sun City deelgeneem. Albei spanne het tennis van hoogstaande gehalte gespeel. Die dogters het puik gevaar en die toernooi gewen! Die seuns het derde geëindig teen Grey PE en Eikestad. Ons sê dankie aan Rijk Genis en Heinrich Lubbe wat die Wilson-tennisraketsakke geborg het.

Wat ‘n ongelooflike ervaring! Sestien skole, 160 dogters en perfekte weer! De Hoop kan met groot dankbaarheid terugkyk op ‘n eerste vir De Hoop-netbal. Die dogters het met entoesiasme die aand aangepak, die energie was tasbaar en die belangrikste was die geleentheid om op ‘n vriendskaplike voet teen mekaar te kon meeding. Baie dankie aan Ernst en Le Roux Viljoen van HELDERBOSCH SPAR vir hul borgskap waarsonder die geleentheid nie sou kon plaasvind nie. Die bane het soos ‘n Olimpiese stadion gelyk! WATERSTONE SPUR het die speelsters se magies met heerlike hamburgers gevul.

De Hoop Primary School was the host school of the Dolphin gala, which included Stellenbosch, Somerset College, Somerset House and Rhenish Primary School. De Hoop Primary School made a clean sweep.

Lisa van der Merwe and Danielle de Villiers really enjoy playing at the Environmental Club at the Riebeeck Kasteel Camp.

Die ouers het die onderwysers die stryd aangesê tydens die Rooftek T20 krieketwedstryd. Ongelukkig moes De Hoop se onderwysers die knie buig as gevolg van die ouers se uitstekende kolfwerk. De Hoop sê baie dankie aan mnr. K. Bruwer vir sy borgskap.

Hierdie pappas stap ‘n lang pad met Laerskool De Hoop! Na die somtotaal van 67 jaar, groet ‘Die Legendes’ De Hoop aan die einde van die jaar. Tydens die Rooftek T20-krieketwedstryd het hulle gewys waar Dawid die wortels begrawe het – Pappas wen onderwysers!

Super SWPS atlete

During water week (17 – 21 March) the learners discussed where water comes from, uses and how we should conserve it. Our grade 3 learners made raindrops with ideas on how they can save water.

The grade 1 class read ‘In the pond’. After reading the book they decided to go and have a look at the school pond. Many of the learners did not know that there was a beautiful pond at the school! They saw water lilies and water pads, tadpoles, dragonflies and gold fish who nibbled their fingers.

Hierdie vier leerders het hul WP-atletiekklere verwerf. Caitlin en Jesse gaan die Wes-Kaap atletiekspan verteenwoordig.

By no means is PushBullet new, but thanks to an update this month, the app is now one of the most powerful and useful apps you will ever install on both your phone and computer. For those new, PushBullet began as an incredibly useful app that would allow you to “push” links, files, or other goodies from your com-puter to phone and then back again. We have watched as the functionality for it has grown immensely over the last six or so months, but this month its creators added notification mirroring.

With notification mirroring, PushBullet will show a pop-up in your Chrome PC browser every time you get a notification from any app on your phone (assuming you enabled it). You can choose to dismiss it on phone, turn off mirroring from that app, or go on about your business. I don’t know about you, but the fact that I don’t have to pick-up my phone each time it buzzes, and can keep my eyes glued to my computer, plus wipe the notification from my phone, is freaking ground-breaking. Go install this.
