Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for human settlements in the City of Cape Town, says that although elec- trification for the site was not initially planned, the possibility is now being looked in- to. “The City of Cape Town and Eskom, in whose supply area Sir Lowry’s Pass Village falls, are looking at the possibility of providing tempo- rary electrification,” Sonnenberg says. Residents say they made the request because they are worried that a lack of electricity create health and safety hazards. Several illegal electrical connections have already been set up, and this is of grave concern to the residents, says community leader Lionel Benjamin. Earlier this year, a Sir Lowry’s Pass woman was killed by a badly earthed illegal connec- tion. The line sent a lethal current through her shack and electrocuted her. The other households on the temporary site are forced to use fires for cooking, light and warmth. However, the site’s layout does not follow the fire regulation stating that buildings should be at least three metres apart. This, Sonnenberg says, is because the site is temporary. “As this is an emergency area, and due to space constraints, the city’s human settle- ments directorate has not enforced this. Expe- rience has shown that it is very difficult to po- lice as people often extend into this ‘fire break’, or erect a new structure in it.” Benjamin says there is an added health risk caused by the fires. “People have asthma and are badly affected by the smoke. They have been suffering from the cold, because they can’t warm their homes properly.” PLANT ’n BOOM: Clara En- gelbrecht (72) en haar kleinseun CJ (4) van Lou- rensia Park, het verlede Vrydag ’n boom ter viering van Nasionale Boomplant- dag by hul huis geplant. Lwandle’s Kelly Ma-lizana wakes up longbefore sunrise everymorning to make surehe’s in his taxi andready to pick up hisfirst passenger – at03:20.

After that he fetchesanother seven passen-gers, all of them fromtheir homes, and takesthem to the train stationin Strand. The pick-upsat home are done at noextra cost.Kelly (52), who has

been driving his taxi for15 years, started collect-ing his passengers attheir homes because, hesays, it’s not safe forthem to walk to the taxirank at that time.“People were crying

that no-one was safe.Skollieswould take theirphonesand theirmoney.

I said to myself: ‘Whatcan I do to help them?’”His solution was to

take themout of the dan-gerous situation by pro-viding his door-to-doorservice, which he hasbeen running for the lasttwo years. The Macassar Taxi

Association found theircommuters had a simi-lar problem, and so theyalso run a door-to-doorservice now, says the as-sociations’s secretary,Arthur Rhodes. From04:00, taxi drivers pickup their customers fromtheir homes or thestreet, and then dropthem off at their variousdestinations, all atnoex-tra cost. The taxi rankopens at 09:00.A second driver in

on the traffic islands in June, but work cameto a halt after some residents objected to thecolour scheme of red, green and yellow, meantto reflect the City’s logo.“Comments received were that the trial col-

ceived four written letters and numerous tele-phonic complaints, after which the City de-cided to revert to the former colours of greenandwhite. RoseMcFall of RoseMcFall Proper-ties onMain Road then offered to complete theupgrade. However, bad weather delayed thepainting, saysGqada, whichhas only just beencompleted.McFall says she took over the painting be-

R10 000, for the paint and the two painters.Ward councillor Stuart Pringle says no

money had initially been budgeted for return-ing the fence to its original colours. Gqadaadds: “Rose McFall Properties offered theirservices voluntarily, and the local City Parksofficeaccepted thisasaonce-off arrangement.”

Local Imam fightstrash with informationNICOLE MCCAIN

A local imam, prompted by the illegaldumping at the wetland along BoundaryStreet in Strand, has launched awarenessevents for children in the area.

Imam Naziem Safodien arranged an educa-tion programme to teach children about hy-giene, and why it’s important not to dump orlitter around the wetland.“The existence of a wetland is very impor-

tant. We need to appreciate our wetland bylooking after it, and not damage it by dumpingour dirt in it,” says Safodien. “So our appealto the public living near the wetland is to lookafter the wetland.”Bags were distributed to locals to encourage

them to dispose of their refuse properly, and

they were educated about the effects of dump-ing around the wetland. Safodien also distrib-uted toothbrushes and toothpaste to thechildren. Safodien says the community is alsoappealing to the subcouncil to place a sign-board indicating no dumping is allowed, andto fine any offenders.Ward councillor Johan Middleton, who

pointed out that the fine for dumping illegallyisR500,saystheMetroPolicedopatrol thearea, butpeopleoftendumpatnight.Middletonaddsthat no-dumping signs are often vandalised orstolen. But, he says, the Solid Waste Depart-ment does clean the area weekly.Safodien also says the community has no

containers inwhich to place refuse.Middletonsays the community’s concern will be sent ontoSolidWaste, andamotion forcontainerswillbe put before the subcouncil.

The police are appreciated!I would like to say a big thank you to theSAPS for their support and superb service. Also a thank you to the good Samaritanwho alerted the SAPS, which led to the ar-rest of one of the individuals, still withsome of the stolen goods in hand.Upon wakening on Sunday morning, 26

August, I found that I had been burgled.Luckily I sleep with my bedroom doorlocked. They had ransacked the rest of thehouse, helped themselves to foodandwine, and were very selective in what they took.I had just opened my garage door to go

and report the burglary when an SAPSStrandvanpulledupinmydriveway.Theycame to check the property after arrestingone of the thieves; my name and addresswere inmy laptop case, which the thief hadin his possession.

Iwent down toSomersetWestPolice Sta-tion and reported the burglary. An inspec-tor was assigned to investigate the case.SomersetWestPoliceStationcontactedmeon Sunday afternoon and arranged for fin-gerprints to be taken, during which the in-spector came to my home and introducedhimself.SAPS Strand went out of their way to

keep me informed of the progress and letme know exactly what the thief had in hispossession. They were extremely profes-sional and helpful at all times. ByWednes-day afternoon the stolen goods that thethief had in his possession were returnedto me. I hope that this thank you at leastmakes a difference and lets theSAPSknowthat they are appreciated!
