Back in the dawn of (CrossMark) time How did it all begin?

• Five years ago

• Royal Society part of CrossMark pilot

• Trial on Proceedings B – HTML articles from 2011

• Started with core “Status” tab

Setting things up What did we need to do?

• Deposit CrossMark metadata (now part of CrossRef deposit)

• Add CrossMark metadata and logo to HTML pages

• Add CrossMark metadata and logo to PDF content

Next steps Applying CrossMark to PDFs

• Techset creates XML for logo on PDF

• RS production team check that date on PDF CrossMark matches

dates to be applied to HTML version

So… what happened? Website redesign:

• Less clutter

• Marketing campaign to mark 350th anniversary

• Revised user journey almost always takes users to HTML version

first

Lessons learned • You’re only as good as your supplier!

• Watch out for changes to your processes that could affect deposits

• CrossMark works well (better?) with a Continuous Publication

workflow

What the future holds…

Short term:

• Second “Record” tab containing funding information

Longer term:

• More info on the second tab (peer review, data accessibility)

• Threaded publications/ Registered reports

• Deposit reporting (in conjunction with HighWire)

• Back file deposits?
