IntroductionThe National Exhibition of the NZ Society of Potters is one of the most im-portant reasons this organization exists. Every year for over half a century this members only, selected exhibition highlights the changing face of ceramics throughout New Zealand. This celebration of ceramics is an important institu-tion that also acts as the most public face of the NZSP and a way of engaging with a new audience every year.To make these exhibitions possible we’d like to thank our sponsors, including our venue hosts Whangamata Woodworks.

Welcome to the Woodstoke Conference and Exhibition 2012

It is a pleasure to have this opportunity to welcome you to Whangamata and to the wide range of activities surrounding The Woodstoke 2012 Conference and exhibitionThe annual NZSP Conference, located in rotation in different parts of New Zealand, is always an ambitious project. Local enthusiasts rise to the challenge of putting on this major event so that members of our ceramics community can celebrate clay together. And 2012 is no different. We are honoured to have special guests with us, guests who will run master classes and demonstrate at our conference. We are honoured to have so many people contributing to this big 6 day event beginning with master classes earlier in the week and after a weekend of fi ring kilns, ending with visits to potters in the wider Coromandel region. It is clearly the pinnacle of the year in the New Zealand Ceramics calendar. Woodstoke 2012 will provide us with a rich opportunity to exchange views, to learn and focus on things ceramic. That is how it should be. Congratulations go to all of our members who have had pieces accepted for our annual exhibition. I am confi dent that we will have a lot to celebrate as the very best of Ceramics in this country, is displayed for us to savour and enjoy. I am in no doubt that this event plays a very important part in bringing our New Zealand ceramics community together and that in itself is of great value. But let us not take it for granted. It is a lot of hard work. So much goes on behind the scenes and we are so very grateful to those who have made it

happen yet again. We live in demanding times and the challenge will now go out to another group to stage an exhibition and ceramics event in 12 months from now, somewhere else in New Zealand. Your satisfaction will be a good reward for all those who have made it possible.Wally Hirsh O.B.EPresident, New Zealand Society of Potters Inc.

Selector’s StatementMarshall MaudeIt is a privilege to jury the 2012 NZ Society of Potters Annual Exhibition. The quality and diversity of the work is a testament to the continued vibrancy of the ceramic arts in New Zealand. When travelling, I am always struck more by the similarities apparent in ceramics than by any regional differences. I think these similarities are driven not by globalization but instead by a universal un-derstanding and love of a common material. Clay is the language we share and this exhibition is a celebration of the ceramic process.

Earthenware

$18551

With climate change, deforestation and landdegradation, the survival of the tribal society ofAfrica is at risk. They have survived on theanimals they raise and their travels aredetermined by their search for water.Temperatures have risen and water hasdwindled. Water is already a catalyst forregional conflict. This latest body or work is loosely based onthe African water jar, but with a contemporarytwist. With the use of old European techniquessuch as stencilling and sgraffito, these jarsbecome colourful modern works of art.

My love affair with clay began in 1956 while Iwas studying for my Fine Art Prelim exams. Iencountered a big tub of ochre colouredmalleable clay. Magic mud - Bliss.Figured, face (portraiture) and fragmentationare largely my focus now. Women's formsespecially incarnating generous and generatingnature. Portraiture is an ongoing fascination asis fragmentation. I like the balance ofabstraction and realism, the delicacy of it andthe endless possibility of variousinterpretations plus the delight in theserendipity factor. Now the challenge to myself is to find thesimplest manipulations of clay to achieve themaximum expressions/impressions that I can.

My work is currently focused on exploringcolour, and colour combinations, often withsurprising and exciting results. I look topainters for inspiration, finding unusualcombinations in the backgrounds of paintings. Itake the shapes and colours I see and makethem my subjects, turn them into objects andgive them a visual life of their own. I useporcelain as I find the pure white surface aperfect canvas for the colours I am using.

In this series I have been exploring how far Ican push the clay before it reaches breakingpoint. We live in an environment where weare surrounded by stresses and tensions andrelationships that test us to the limits.I startedthis series in stoneware paperclay. I moved tousing porcelain so that I could incorporate lightand use the porcelains translucency toaccentuate the thin veneer between balanceand disaster. Light has always been associatedwith hope, when breaking point is reached thelight shines through. This series is handbuilt in porcelain and fired to1180 c.

More recently mytreatment of the surface has caught up withthat, and the pots I am making at the momentare split between earthenware, with itspossibilities for depth of colour, and soda-firedstoneware, with all the variation of colour andtexture the direction of the flame and the sodaprovide.I strive to make vessels with the considerationand creativity functional objects deserve tohave invested in them.

My sculptural work is influenced by my love ofthe land, sea and vegetation of the Gisborneregion.I love the marks on the land and the marks myhands leave on the clay. My sculptures aremainly land and plant forms, gestural, raw andorganic. I like to use oxides and coloured slipsfor my surface decoration, rubbed back toexpose the clay body, creating lovely texturaleffects. This piece 'view to the past' refers tolooking back through the layers of time - thesurface erosion. Through the gap, is the futureand what it may bring.

The albarello is a form originally intended as anApothecary’s dry ingredient storage jar. I’mdrawn to this shape because of its potential toexpress my ideas about clay and fire. I love toimpart a feeling of liveliness to the clay, buttemper it within a boundary. So I use therestrictions of the albarello form to explorethe curve of a rib line, or the soft dimple of anapplied handle. I examine relationships in eachpiece like the interaction between a lip and ashoulder. The use of multiples promotes theexamination of traits across a series of pieces –comparing and contrasting the forms andmarkings on the pots. The form provides a structure to the methodsof decorating that I use, which is firing the potsin a wood kiln. to create an engaging andsophisticated surface.

In the last few years I have been working withshino, focussing on making tea bowls and otherdomestic ware items that compliment theunpredictable nature of this glaze. A simpletea bowl is probably my favorite thing to make, and the most challenging. To me a tea bowl isan object of contemplation as well as afunctional item. While on one hand the bowlneeds to fit and feel good in the hand, bepleasant to touch and have a smooth rim, italso needs to provide enough interest for theeye. And shino with its pin-holing, crazing andcrawling seems uniquely suited to that. So Ihave been trying to produce pots that areloosely thrown to match the nature of thisglaze.A couple of years ago I build a wood fired kilnat my studio north of Auckland. Title: Holy Bowl

Earthenware Ceramic

$3503

I have been working with this form for sixyears now and it has evolved and grown eachyear. People are drawn to these bowls as theyare a perfect half sphere and are a large size.My bowls are bold, simple contemporarypieces. I am drawn to work in series and haverestricted the materials used to push the fullextent of an idea – this bowl being colouredwith copper only.My bowls are not necessarily functional; theyare an exploration of structure and texture, demanding to be touched. My hope is thatthey will nourish those that live with them.

Handbuilt Burnished Terracotta

$26534

I am of Ngati Maniapoto and English descent, and am constantly struggling to re- evaluateassumptions through my art. I aspire to engagepeople by creating hand built clay or mixedmedia sculptures that generate whimsy orhumour and invites them to join me inobserving the idiosyncrasy’s of the humancondition. For me, each art work becomes avoyage of discovery; I am continually seducedby texture, contour and perspective. It seems Iam always paddling down a new stream – Iusually get lost, but sometimes during thejourney back a work of art emerges and alongthe way, I have learnt more.

Earthenware

$27521

I have been working with clay for 12 years nowand loved my time spent studying withBronwynne Cornish for a year and my fouryears doing the Diploma of Ceramic Arts(Otago) through Auckland Studio Potters. Itwas four years of indulgence, playing with like-minded people who shared this peculiarfascination with clay and how it can be altered.I have always been drawn to illustrativesculpture. I enjoy the process of buildingstories into my work as I go. I like the aged-looking surfaces created by layers of slip andoxides.

Porcelain Paper Clay

I’m originally from England and I have a degreein ceramics from Cardiff University, Wales. Icurrently exhibit in Britain and New Zealand. The natural world is inherent in my work andinforms it as well as becoming part of it in thetechniques I use to create the surface. Thesymbols are carefully considered and holdpersonal significance to me, but I enjoy thatthey can invoke different feelings in others. When I’m working I work fluidly so I can allowthe patterns to evolve. Much of my work isbased around an interpretation of the vessel, which arises out of the exploration of my being(body) as a container.

Midfire White

My work endeavours to encourage a smallsmile and in some way make reference to thethose bemusing times in our lives we allexperience for one reason or another. This piece is part of an ongoing 'Adrift' seriesdepicting our vulnerabilities, hopes and dreamsand the way in which we individuallyendeavour to navigate them. It is made with amid-fire white, decorated with underglazes andsecret overwash. Fired in an electric kiln to1160c.

Earthernware

I am constantly challenged in my figurativework to apply the surface treatment thatsuccessfully accommodates the ‘mood’ of thepiece I am working on. Currently I amenjoying working on my ‘Earth Women’ seriesand have been experimenting with chemicals togive an aged quality to the final piece as well asenjoying the notion of having a small degree of‘lack of control’ over the final colourresponses. I also enjoy applying layers to thefigure that give visual interest as well as depth. The palette of surface treatments to choosefrom is enormous and in that lays thechallenge.

Stoneware Bowl

$20047

My work portfolio is quite varied. It rangesfrom the abstract, sculptural, Pure Glazeinnovation to N.Z. Wildlife replica eggs andsome functional ware which is mostly confinedto larger bowls.I live on the Otago Peninsula on the SouthIsland and the bowls reflect the attachment Ihave with its flora, wildlife and landscape. The impressions in the bowls are leaves I havefound on the forest floor of our regeneratingnative bush. The individual and single shapesare minuscule representations of the totality of‘bush’ but instead of decaying they live on,preserved in clay.

High fired Primo porcelain, carved & etched

I have been fascinated with spirals, fern frondsand koru for a very long time, using them inmy work as additions or carving them intobowls.Currently I am exploring the brilliance ofporcelain, I am playing with carving flattersurfaces and also bringing out patterns by aresist and water etch method applied tounfired clay. Rather than decorating with abrush and colour, I like the way the glazethickness picks up the dips of the carving orthe bumps of resisted patterns.

Stoneware

$35012

I have decided that using clay is the best way ofconveying my current state of mind and at themoment I am using the figure of the queen andall its colourful associations to express thecontradiction between what is superficial andwhat lies beneath. I use slips and glazes, stainsand mixed media, whatever comes to hand inthe finished piece to achieve a colourful orplayful portrait. But also an attitude that showsan underlying sense of unease or hiddenagenda. I like to challenge the viewer to thinkbeyond what is seen on the surface.
