Innovation for Science. That’s been Helena’s mission statement since the company was founded and the driving force behind our Focus Group Road Tour. Input from real-world laboratorians like you is helping Helena continue to solve real-world problems today.
• Participants at the 2018 Milwaukee and Chicago meetings asked if our SPIFE Anti-Dara* antiserum, developed to remove the effect of Daratumumab from blood specimens for SPE and IFE testing, might also be used to eliminate the cross-reactive interference that Blood Banks see. That started an investigation and today our Anti-Dara is in clinical trials for transfusion medicine as well as in the approval process for SPE and IFE.
• An attendee from Mississippi presented a novel idea for handling fibrin in serum specimens from cancer patients. Thrombin Drops are in the works!
• Another lab was seeing a big increase in Alpha 1 Antitrypsin testing. We now have a pre-submission of SPIFE A1AT* with higher sensitivity and over twice the throughput of existing methods.
• Also, a more robust v2 of our Myeloma Module for reporting SPE and IFE results is now available and v3 is in the works. Our Touch System continues to be the frontrunner in zone electrophoresis and we’re responding to requests for higher capacity capillary testing with the new Nexus MAX with a throughput of 552 SPE in six hours.
This catalog highlights many of Helena’s flagship products today – and a peak into the future. But the work doesn’t stop here. If you have a problem in the laboratory or an idea that could make your job easier, bring it to us! We are eager to listen and put our best work into meeting the needs of today’s laboratory.
Best personal regards,
Tipton Golias

NEW! URINESAFE URINE COLLECTION CUP Gasket for
leak resistance
Finally, a urine cup that can withstand a pneumatic tube
transfer system without springing a leak or breaking the
bank! Those are two of the design specifications of this
new specimen cup now available from Labcon.
Taking cues from their expertise with centrifuge tubes, a
gasket integrated in the lid provides a tight, leak-resistant
seal. High-quality plastic and precision engineering
mean the cup won't shatter during transfer and the
threads mesh cleanly and smoothly allowing the lid to be
screwed on easily.

Using H-Pette is simple. Just insert H-Pette into the stopper of
any size blood collection tube, invert tube and transfer a drop of
blood to a glass slide or test cassette. Original molded H-Pettes
are also available with an integral blade for making differential

The new C-Pette and C-Pette-E make
delivering samples into the test cards and

and efficient, while reducing risk of biohazard
exposure. Original C-Pette features an easy

U-Pettes provide an easy way to dispense blood
into a test card or cassette, like our Cascade Abrazo
or Abbott’s iSTAT, without uncapping the tube. The
unique tab design allows blood to be dispensed two
different ways as needed.
For larger samples, place the tip of the U-Pette all the way to the bottom of the sample well. Counterpressure with the tabs while pushing down on the tube to dispense sample as needed.
For small volumes, hold the tip over the sample port to dispense sample into the port by using the tabs to counterpressure like a syringe.

ColoScreen-ES is an extra-sensitive (0.3 mg/g feces) guaiac test with vivid color development for easier interpretation.
ColoCARE is the easiest, most economical way to screen for fecal occult bleeding. ColoCARE’s sensitivity is roughly equivalent to traditional guaiac FOBT. Helena also supplies the support materials needed for successful screens. Educational handouts, wall charts, and promotional materials are available free of charge with your ColoCARE order. With ColoCARE, there is no stool handling or laboratory processing.

THE GOLD STANDARDThe 2017 revision of the McDonald criteria for diagnosing
multiple sclerosis places an increased emphasis on CSF
testing. When the diagnosis is unclear, rather than wait
for the disease to present with more overt symptoms or
MRI findings, the new recommendations are to test for
oligoclonal bands.
Developed by leading experts, SPIFE IgG IEF technique is
the “gold standard” method for determining intrathecal IgG
synthesis. This method uses highly sensitive immunoblotting
resulting in a 95% sensitivity level. The concentration of
individual bands may be as low as 2% of the total CSF IgG
but can be seen against the background of polyclonal IgG
present through filtration from the blood, even while the
total CSF IgG concentration is within the reference range.
D I A G N O S I N G M U LT I P L E S C L E R O S I S
3389 5 profiles3385 10 profiles
It is now recommended that the presence of CSF oligoclonal bands be allowed to substitute for the dissemination of time criteria in diagnosing patients with clinical symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
AJ Thompson, BL Banwell, F Barkhof, et. al., The Lancet, December 2017
N E W !
The SPIFE IgG IEF method of nitrocellulose immunoblotting “remains the ‘gold standard’ method recommended by the International Consensus publication and is preferred over IEF followed by immunofixation. The onus is on the protagonists of in-gel immunofixation to show that it performs to the same level as the de-facto standard in both sensitivity as well as the very wide range of IgG concentrations.”
Emeritus Prof E J Thompson, PhD MD DSc FRCPath FRCP November 2017
Dr. Thompson, together with his team developed the IgG IEF/immunoblot method and have used it confirm the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis on a wide international scale.

REVERSE IMAGE REPORTS AND WORKLISTS
See everything in one place Each patient’s current results are auto-paired with their previous data from a virtually unlimited data store, including competitive system data. Available total protein, albumin, free light chain ratio and nephelometric data can also be incorporated for review. If it’s paired, it’s there.
Scroll through to spot changes Reports are presented as scrollable thumbnails to quickly detect progression or regression of disease. Initial, review and release – Queues with ID audit trail
are provided to collate initial results by the operator, reports awaiting review, and final results ready to report to the clinician.
The new Myeloma Module is an optional tracking feature that allows quick review and reporting of results from both the SPIFE zone and the V8 CE systems.
Invert the background of IFE images on screen to create a “negative” view to enhance visualization and aid in interpretation. View simultaneously with positive image system.
Reports and worklists are completely customizable. Create a single-page report that includes one patient's SPE and IFE with interpretation.

It is now recommended that the presence of CSF oligoclonal bands be allowed to substitute for the dissemination of time criteria in diagnosing patients with clinical symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
