Hello from Barry

A welcome back to Diana Lawson who has now re-joined the Committee after her accident and thanks to Nilda Ginn for looking after membership in Diana’s absence and thanks from them both to those members who have made life easier by signing up to direct debits.

I hope you all have an enjoyable summer.

Spring ExhibitionThe Richmond Art Society's Spring Exhibition took place at the Landmark Arts Centre from Friday 13th - Sunday 15th May. This year, as a change, we asked members to submit work on the theme 'Icons'. We had some 61 entries for the 'Icons' exhibition: 208 works were on display in total. It was fascinating to see how varied the members' interpretation of the theme was, from Peter Strupinski's classical image of the 'Madonna and Child' to Pat Satchwell's 'London Black Cab', Nilda Ginn's 'A Cup of Tea', Peter Savory's 'Christmas Tree' and Paul Douglas's 'Cosmic Interface'!

The exhibition was opened on Friday night by John Iddon, of John Iddon Fine Arts.

John was asked to choose his favourite work from those using the 'icons' theme as their inspiration. Caroline Sayer's collage work 'Flamenco Dancer & the Two Models' and Anna Tikhomirova' 'Sunset in Westminster' were admired by John; however, the winner was Jude Wild's 'Eel Pie Land'.

Jude also won the 'People's Vote' for favourite picture. Jude's experimental techniques with photography are fascinating. She uses photo manipulation and painting, employing solvents like acetone or turpentine, blender pens, acrylic mediums such as gels and even packing tape to achieve the transfer of digital image onto canvas - trying many different methods to 'perfect' the process. For the first time we asked members to demonstrate different artistic techniques during the exhibition. This proved very popular with visitors.

Karen Iredale used oils to demonstrate painting the inside of the Landmark's stained glass windows; Cath Ball sculpted in porcelain (both above), Simon Broom drew a charcoal plaster head; Peter Swann painted with egg tempera (below); and Barry Harrison demonstrated graphite and carbon techniques. The exhibition was promoted via advertising in local media, posters and a leaflet drop in the local area, etc. We had over 450 visitors during the three day exhibition, and sold some £2,200 of work. Caroline Sayer Joint Exhibition Organiser.

Lecture Programme 2016/17(enclosed)

There are some exciting exhibitions to look forward to over the next twelve months and as usual I've tried to tie in talks with some of them. In the next programme, the talks on Winifred Knights, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Nash, Caravaggio and Robert Rauschenberg will all tie in with exhibitions at major galleries. I've also included more talks about female artists this time and have tried to pick subjects from across the spectrum of art history. There will be return visits from some of our poplar speakers, but I have also found three speakers who are new to us and come highly recommended. Jude Wild, Lecture Programme Organiser

WebsiteDon’t forget to let me ([email protected]) know about your upcoming exhibiting for the News section.
