Hello Honors Physics students,

First of all, and most importantly, I miss you and hope you are well!

As you know starting April 1st we will start school again using distant learning. The governor has closed

schools at least until April 6th ,but I am providing work for the next 2 weeks.

There are several options for turning in your work: Use a google doc, or share an email, or screen shot

your work on an ipad or photo on phone and share it with me at [email protected] .

I will send out information on Remind or you can check school wires. Also check your school email from

time to time.

To have continuity of learning here is a brief overview of the next 2 weeks

Go to https://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/momentum/Lesson-1/Momentum for overview of

these lessons then clickthrough the tutorial links at the bottom.

4/1 Do the physics classroom lesson 1 (momentum) from hyperlink above and answer all questions in lesson Hw: worksheet momentum, impulse and momentum change (p.1 and 2)

4/2 Go to the physics classroom hyperlink above then advance to lesson 2 (momentum

change and impulse

connection) and answer all questions in lesson Hw: worksheet controlling a collision (p.3 and 4)

4/3 Go to the physics classroom hyperlink above then advance to lesson 3 (applications of

impulse momentum

change) and answer all questions in lesson

Hw: worksheet simple computations (p.5 and 6)

4/6 Do the egg drop interactive lab from link right after 4/3 lesson

4/7 Create a device that will catch an egg using 12 sheets of printer paper or equivalent and tape or glue Send picture of the device you have made

4/8 If you have an egg, go outside and drop the egg from rising heights into your device and see how high it can withstand. Do a small write up of results

4/9 Go to the physics classroom hyperlink above then advance to lesson 4 (law of

action-reaction

revisited) and answer all questions in lesson

Hw: worksheet action reaction (p. 7 and 8)

4/10 Do worksheet Momentum and impulse physics Fundamentals And impulse momentum worksheet 1

4/13 Do worksheet momentum-impulse 1-18 p.71-72

4/14 Do worksheet momentum-impulse 19-31 p.73-74

Stay Safe!

1. Define momentum. Give the equation and unit.

2. Two cars, one twice as heavy as the other, move down a hill at the same speed. Compared to that of the lighter car, the momentum of the heavier car is ___________ as much.

3. a. For a constant force, if the duration of impact upon an object is doubled, how is the impulse affected?

b. How is the resulting change in momentum affected?

4. If the time of impact in a collision is extended by four times, by how much is the force of impact altered?

5. Define impulse. Give its equation and unit.

Use the impulse-momentum equation to answer questions 6-9:

6. Why is it important to “follow through” when trying to hit a home run?

7. Why does it hurt more when you fall on a concrete floor than on a wooden floor?

8. Why are car dashboards, steering wheels, and boxing gloves padded?

9. How can a karate “chop” break a board?

10. What is the momentum of a golf ball with a mass of 62 g moving at 73 m/s?

11. If in the problem above, the impact between the ball and club lasted for

2.0 x 10-3 s, what force acted on the ball? What force acted on the club?

12. For how long a time must a tow truck pull with a force of 550 N on a stalled

1200 kg car to give it a forward velocity of 2.0 m/s?

Physics Impulse Momentum Worksheet 1 Name: _______________________________ Pd: ______

Try the following three problems. For all problems round “g” from 9.8 m/s2 to 10 m/s

2

1. A 10 N force is applied to a 10 kg mass for three seconds. The mass starts from rest.

a. Determine the acceleration of the mass

b. Determine the final velocity

2. A 100 kg box initially traveling at 10 m/s encounters a frictional force and takes 5 seconds to

slow down to a stop.

a. Determine the acceleration of the box (direction matters + or -)

b. If friction is the only unbalanced force, what is its value?

3. A 5 kg mass initially falling with a speed of 3 m/s is later falling with a speed of 23 m/s.

a. How much time did this take for its speed to change?

b. What was the amount of force acting on the mass?

4. Complete the following table based on the three problems above.

6. Thinking about how the unit of Newton is defined (based on F=m·a) show how a NS is

equivalent to kgm/s

The quantity F · t is known as Impulse (J) and the quantity m · v is known as momentum (p).

The symbol for Impulse is obviously “J” and the symbol for momentum is obviously “p”. Isn’t

physics logical?! So impulse describes an amount of force taking into account the amount of

time it’s applied while momentum describes velocity taking into account its mass.

So we have ourselves a new relationship. Just like Newton’s Laws tell us that Forces cause

accelerations we now have Impulses cause Momentum to change or the amount of Impulse is

exactly equal to the amount the momentum changes by.

7. A 10 N force is applied to a 5 kg mass for 10 seconds. The mass starts from rest.

a. What is the Impulse?

b. What is the change in momentum?

c. What is the initial momentum (starts from rest)

d. Solve for the final momentum

e. Determine the final velocity

8. A 100 kg box initially traveling at 10 m/s encounters a friction force of 10 N for 2 seconds.

a. What is the Impulse (be careful of direction!)?

b. What is the change in momentum

c. What is the initial momentum

d. Solve for the final momentum

e. Determine the final velocity

9. A 5 kg ball initially traveling at 10 m/s speeds up for 20 seconds to a speed of 60 m/s.

a. What is the initial momentum?

b. What is the final momentum?

c. What is the change in momentum?

d. What is the Impulse?

e. How much force was applied?
