“TH” Pronunciation

There are two ways to pronounce the “TH”.

The first way is voiceless (or unvoiced, /θ/).

This means that the vocal cords are not used.

In order to pronounce the voiceless “TH” sound,

put your tongue between your teeth.

Your tongue can rest on your bottom lip,

if that’s more comfortable for you.

Blow air softly to make the “TH” sound.

Most of the air will flow over the top of your tongue.

is called the voiced “TH” ( /ð/ ).

This means that the vocal cords are used.

Standard Chinese does not have a “V” sound.

However, it is very similar to the “F” sound.

So you can master it with a little bit of

practice.

The “V” sound is voiced.

The “F” sound is voiceless.

To make the “V” sound, put your upper teeth

onto your lower lip.

This is the same position as the “F”.
