60 years after the Australian photographer Wolfgang Sievers (1913-2007) photographed Bruck Mills in Wangaratta, the Galen College Year 10 photography students retraced his steps through the same factory to see the same machines still in operation.

Australian Textiles Mills displayed 50 photographs by Wolfgang Sievers for the Year 10 tour, Makayla Briena had a chance to see her great grand father or grand father in the photographs, as they had both worked at Bruck Mills.

Wolfgang Sievers emigrated from Germany in 1930 because of the impending war in Europe. The factory where the Aus-tralian Textile Mills stands now was a factory set up by the Australian Government to make aluminium for the Second World War. When the war finished in 1945 it was transformed into the textile factory by a Canadian company Bruck Mills.

When Sievers photographed the factory in 1954 there were over a 1000 workers. He captured the well-dressed workers operating the enormous machines, which were part of the industrial revolution, making mass produced fabrics for the

popular fashion scene in Melbourne.

The international market has pressured Australian Textile Mills to down size. Some machines have been decommis-sioned and its biggest contract is making uniform fabric for the Australian army. It seems after 70 years of making fashion fabrics it has returned to manufacturing for the Australian Army.

It has much fewer workers, "around 163" says student Jack James. One worker, Gavin Gardner (pictured below left) who student Nicholas Richards photographed outside, had just announced his retirement after 48 and a half years.

Amber Ferraro captured brilliant photographs of today's workers with a digital SLR camera in colour, something Wolfgang Sievers couldn't do till later in his life. Other students used 35 mm black and white film cameras much like what Sievers used. These films will be developed back at school and enlarged in the darkroom.

Justice Matters CampThe “Justice Matters” Camp is an opportunity for students to develop and extend skills in leadership and initiative while providing the opportunity to meet other like-minded youth from across our diocese at a three day camp at the Harrietville Chalet. The theme of this years camp was “BOTH JUSTICE AND MERCY”. Galen had two representatives from year ten attend this camp, Emma Christy and Billie Taylor who participated in a range of activities and discussions, particularly around deepening our awareness and understanding of issues of justice.

“Emma and I went on a Justice Matters Camp, which was focused on the theme 'Justice and Mercy'. Throughout the camp we talked about important issues in our modern society, such as human trafficking, asylum seekers, poverty, and many other unjust issues effecting our world. We learnt how we can make a difference in our school, that will help the world become a better place for us all to live in. We met like-minded people and made great friends during our time there; we would definitely recommend those who have a passion for justice to attend in the future!”

On Wednesday 25th May, 30 students from Year 7 to Year 10 were assessed for the Wangaratta Regional Sayembara Lisan Indonesian Speaking Competition. This is an initiative of the Victorian Indonesian Teachers Association, and is supported by Melbourne University and the Victorian Government. The students were also competing against Cathedral College students, in order to gain a place to compete at the State Final. The students completed a 5 to 10 minute conversation with two Indonesian teachers (Brian Williams, of Cathedral College and Meg Webster, of Galen Catholic College). Enterants were required to answer general questions about their age, where they live, hobbies, how they get to school etc. Afterwards they gave a speech about their friends, family, pets or their house for approximately 1 minute. Then they needed to answer a series of unrehearsed questions regarding the topics they had previously spoken about, for a further 2-3 minutes. It was evident that the students had practised frequently and the assessors were amazed by the students’ love of the

language, their preparation, pronunciation, and ability to converse in Indonesian, making it very difficult to choose the finalists for each section. A total of sixteen students from Galen Catholic College have been selected to represent the Wangaratta District in the Sayembara Lisan State Finals at the University of Melbourne on Saturday 11th June. Our school community wishes them the best of luck!

On the 23rd of May the students of Discovery selected to go to different farms in the region according to their interest. The first group went out to a hobby farm in Greta and looked at how families can run sustainable farms. The second group went to the Allen Sheep Farm and learnt how to sheer a sheep, played with baby lambs and learnt about treating and testing wool. The third group went out to the Sandral Sheep Farm, where they learnt how to train kelpies, and why they are so helpful in the paddock. They also learnt how to sheer sheep and had the opportunity to see some farming machinery, including tractor’s, in action. The fourth group went out to the trout farm in Harrietville where they learnt about sustainable trout farming practices, had a tour of the farm and got to do some trout fishing. The students have had the opportunity to learn a lot about sustainable farming in the area and have come back to school to design their own farms that counter some of the issues farmers face such as salinity, drought, irrigation, pesticides and crop rotation. This experience could not have gone ahead without the assistance of Beth and Peter Sandral, Matt and Mandy Allen and Sarah Taylor and George McLeod, so Galen and the Discovery Team would like to thank them for providing such a great learning experience for our students.

Past Galen student, Katrina Pulvirenti is visiting ‘home’ to share her many years of dance experience and knowledge after venturing out after secondary school. Katrina’s new dance workshop event “INVADED” is happening on the 2nd of July at Galen. Expert choreographers (one of whom was on The Voice Australia) will also be at the event to share their knowledge. The great thing about this dance event is that it is for absolute beginners all the way up to interme-diate dancers. And the best part is, you don’t actually need to be a dancer to come along! Year 7 Girls NetballThe year 7 netball team came away winners at the Upper Hume School Sports day two weeks ago. Not losing a game for the entire day. We were lucky to have so many versatile girls, which I think helped when we took on Wangaratta High School in the Grandfinal and coming away winners by so much. Every girl stepped up and played some great netball. Winning this tournament now advances us to the Hume Division in August. Go girls. - Linda ODonohue

Year 8 Girls Netball“After a long three days at camp and hardly any practice the year 8 girl’s netball team, played four excellent games, winning three out of four and coming in 3rd overall. The Galen girls showed both great sportsmanship and mateship as they won and lost gracefully as well as watching their fellow year 7 girl’s team play each game. Well Done Girls.” - Grace McMahon

Equestrian NewsThis years Albury Scots Equestrian Interschools was held on the 21st of May at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre. The competition contained Dressage, Showjumping, Mount and Rider, Games and Handy mount. With over 100 competitors attending this years event with some very tough competition and Galen entering one of their smallest teams, including Annie Creed, Lucy O’Connor, Isla Evans and Amie Hourigan It was a long day but all worth it in the end with Isla Evans finishing off Reserve Champion Intermediate Rider out of a class of 50 and Amie Hourigan Winning Champion Senior Rider out of a class of 54. To top off the day Galen had a comfortable whole school win to finish on a score of 61, followed by St Paul’s College Walla Walla on 44.5.

A great weekend out representing Galen’s Equestrian team once again and we are now looking forward to the Barastoc Interschool Qualifier in Elmore on the 8- 9th of July. Please get in contact with Amie Hourigan if you are interested in coming along.

Senior Boys FootballOn Wednesday 17th May the Galen Boys Senior Football team played in the Herald Sun Shield in Shepparton. Our first game was against Wanganui Park Secondary College. The boys displayed a fast running game and were able to capitalize on some good teamwork by our onballers. The backline players were strong and repelled many attacks from the opposing team. The Galen team were able to over run their opponents and came out winning by 3 goals. Nick Parker who was representing Galen for the first time had a nasty fall and came out of it with a significant knee injury. We all wish Nick a speedy recovery for the rest of the season.

After winning the first game quite comfortably the boys were going into the game against Notre Dame with confidence. From the first bounce coach Laurie Burt made the boys think about Nick Parker and the sacrifice he had made for the team and with a solid pump up speech from Riley Smart everyone was raring to go.

The final score saw Notre Dame take the win 5.2.32 to 4.2.26 but contests were tight all across the ground as the midfield with Xavier Wales, Lachie Bedendo, Joe Richards, Will Nolan and Riley Smart allowed for plenty of options up forward.

Will Robinson started strong leading the forward line kicking 2 goals along side Frazer Judd whose strong contested marks set him up for one of his own. Paul Sanderson was in under all day and was rewarded with a goal while Jack Larkin, Jesse Levesque and Eli Holland Dean worked tirelessly to create options and move the ball forward. Tyler Spencer and Matt Wilson seemed to be everywhere and gathered plenty of possession and Ryan Holt and Connor Stone created plenty of run off the wings with numerous entries into our forward 50. Harry Condon and Riley Petts were strong off the half back providing plenty of spark and Jordan Storer seemed to have his man covered for a majority of the game. Dion Ploegmakers and Jack Jenkin played strong deep in defence and were consistent for the game and Lachie Hourigan didn’t allow his many any easy opportunities. Brad Andison’s courageous back with the flight effort stood out for the day and definitely lifted the teams spirit to bring the game back to within a goal. But there wasn’t enough time left as the game would have definitely finished differently if there was an extra 5 minutes with the momentum in Galen’s favour. Everyone competed hard and the boy’s were unlucky not to come home with a win. The team would like to thank Mr. Burt and Mrs. White for organizing and coaching the team and for Dennis for driving the bus and goal umpiring.

Many thanks to Daniel Murphy for assisting to compile this report.

Intermediate Girls NetballThursday the 19th May the intermediate girls netball team played in the Upper Hume netball competition. The girls first game was against Marian College, the girls were a little nerv-ous but came away with a great win 23-8. Next saw the girls line up against Wodonga Middle Years College – Felltimber, again another solid team effort by all team members coming home with a 45 – 3 win. Going into our last game before finals against Wodonga Senior Secondary College the girls were able to bring home another convincing win the end result 28-3. After three convincing wins it was time for the grand final. All team members had played very well all day and everyone gave their all. Galen had a slow start to the game against Catholic College Wodonga however they did not give up or drop their heads, after a tough game unfortunately they came off second best going down by 4 goals. Player of the day went to Madison O’Keefe for her consistency and continuous talk and support on the court.
