Action 10 is a specially formulated calcium product that promotes root growth and improves stress tolerance in your crop.

ACTION 10ANALYSIS (%W/V)Calcium (Ca) as chloride 10% Formulated with Stoller’s propietary mix of Co-Factors.

GENERAL INFORMATION• ACTION IO is a secondary nutrient combined with natural growth

activators. ACTION I 0, in conjunction with a good nutritional program, provides an extra boost to seedling establishment and root development.

• ACTION 10 provides an important boost to any plant’s tolerance toadverse conditions and stresses. Action IO will enhance crop growthwhen temperatures prevail below 21 °C or above 31 °C and plantgrowth is suspended.

• ACTION IO is completely available and absorbed by the leaf surface orthe root system.

• ACTION IO is designed for use in foliar, seed row, seed and transplantwater application and is non-phytotoxic when used as directed.

SEED TREATMENT (General) To improve seedling establishment and early vigour, apply ACTION 10 to the seed at 500 ml to 1.0 litres per I00kgs of seed (grain). ACTION IO is water based and should not be mixed with oil based seed treat-ments. Allow seed to dry before applying oil based treatments. Do not use treated seed for food, feed or oil purpose.

FOLIAR APPLICATION (General) For continued healthy root growth and plant integrity apply ACTION IO at regular intervals at a rate of 500 ml to 1.0 litres per hectare. Dilution rates should not exceed 2% (i.e. 2 litres of ACTION 10 should be mixed with a minimum of 100 litres of water).

GENERAL INFORMATION BIO-FORGE is used as a foliar spray, in furrow, fertigation and as a seed treatment. BIO-FORGE contains a range of key nutrients to ensure healthy crop growth in stress conditions. An application of BIO-FORGE before or after stress can help the plant maintain normal growth. Cobalt and Molybdenum can help reduce ethylene stress while also assisting with the utilisation of nitrates. Stresses can include heat, drought, flooding, hail, frost, mechanical and herbicide damage.

GENERAL INFORMATIONStoller’s BUDFEED PLUS is a nutrient formulation designed to:

nn Improve fruit quality.nn Provide a nutrient feed of nitrogen, calcium and magnesium through the

woody tissue of the tree or vine.nn Promote even bud development in the spring, reducing inactive buds. nn Encourage healthy spring growth of the tree or vine.nn Provide food for early growth of roots and shoots.nn Contain a balanced nutrient formulation that will not drive excessive

METHODS OF APPLICATIONApplied to the dormant wood of the tree or vine (usually after pruning). Apply from four weeks before, to just prior to budburst (but before any bud activity).

OTHER NUTRIENTS BUDFEED PLUS contains good levels of nitrogen, calcium and magnesium when applied at the above rates. Other nutrients can be added to the spray tank. We recommend Stoller’s chelated range of WL products. Stoller’s Liquid Boron can also be added at 1 litre per 100 litres of BUDFEED PLUS.

Timing: Apply in period from 4 weeks before, to just prior to budburst

WARNINGBUDFEED PLUS is intended as a dormant treatment. DO NOT apply when there is bud activity or shoot growth as tissue damage may occur. It is not recommended that BUDFEED PLUS be applied immediately after an oil spray. If applying an oil spray after a BUDFEED PLUS application, ensure that there is an interval of at least 3 weeks before bud activity.

Calcium 5X is a specially formulated calcium nutrient which is highly available to the plant. It is known that adequate calcium levels in the plant assist in stress relief in adverse conditions. It also contains Stoller’s Co-Factors.

CAUTION: Excessive use of molybdenum (Mo) can be harmful to stock. Plant levels of Mo can be high for 4 weeks after application. It is advisable to keep stock off treated areas for this period. Molybdenum application may induce copper deficiency in grazing animals. This is most likely to occur in sandy soils low in copper. Check rate and frequency of molybdenum use with appropriate authorities. Harmful if swallowed. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap & water after handling. Avoid breathing spray mist.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USECoMo is recommended for all legumes and other plants that obtain nitrogen by fixation from the atmosphere. Symbiotic microbial nitrogen fixation systems require cobalt and molybdenum for nitrogen fixation. CoMo is recommended for all field crop legumes (soybeans, drybeans, lentils, snap beans, field peas, peanuts) and all forage crop legumes (lucerne, redclover, ladino, clover, lespediza, trifoil, subterranean ground peanuts).

500 - 800 mls per hectare in 40 litres of water or a volume sufficient for thorough coverage.

500 - 800 mls per hectare in 40 litres of water or a volume sufficient for thorough coverage.

In Pat Vartuli’s vineyard the soil is predominantly rich and loamy, but like most growers, he’s got a problem patch. Pat grows approximately 22 hectares of Red Globe, Menindee Seedless and Crimson Seedless table grapes at Cardross, near Mildura in Victoria, and his vines are between 4 and 15 years old. The Red Globe variety is particularly susceptible to waterlogging and doesn’t like ‘wet feet’. Heavy rain combined with inconsistent weather and cooler temperatures in spring inhibits iron uptake and often leads to yellowing in the canopy.

Pat has a particular problem with three hectares of Red Globe grapevines grown on limestone with very little top soil and a high soil pH. The high soil pH inhibits the uptake of iron, inducing iron deficiency, also known as lime-induced chlorosis. Iron deficiency causes yellowing of leaves and shoots and reduces growth and fruit set.

Pat sees these symptoms early in the season every year. The Red Globe grapes grown over limestone always suffer more after a heavy rain as the combination of high pH and waterlogging significantly reduces iron uptake. Pat irrigates less on the problem patch and has tried a range of iron foliar sprays in the past to correct the deficiency but this hasn’t been very successful.

Ten years ago, after talking with his Stoller representative, Pat started using Stoller’s WL Iron Chelate in combination with Foli-Zyme. Chelated products significantly improve uptake of iron, while Foli-Zyme helps plants to initiate new growth and recover from stress and periods of slow growth. Often when iron deficiency is a problem, deficiencies of other trace elements like magnesium, calcium, zinc and manganese are common.

Pat now tank mixes Foli-Zyme with Stoller’s WL Iron Chelate, Stoller’s WL Magnesium Chelate and Stoller’s Zinc/Manganese Chelate and applies these as a foliar spray at 7-8 L/ha. Pat puts the first application on soon after budburst, a second application at the 5-6 leaf stage and a third application 5-6 days later. Sprays are applied to target the foliage and Pat uses small nozzles that produce a fine spray.

Pat sees the foliage turn from yellow to a lush green within 5-6 days of the third application of Foli-Zyme plus chelated micronutrients. The uptake of Stoller’s chelated nutrients by plants is much quicker compared to the other products Pat has tried, which means he sees a faster response in his vines. Pat sees the same signs of iron deficiency each year, and each year the Stoller products give a consistent, reliable result and restore the vines to health. Pat has tried lower application rates and they do work, but it takes a bit longer to see the results.

The iron deficiency in the problem patch was particularly bad this year as the soil was still saturated from the previous wet year. Even under these conditions, applying Foli-Zyme plus Stoller’s chelated micronutrients corrected the deficiency, resulting in vines with lush, green foliage.

After such a good outcome on the limestone patch, Pat trialled the Stoller products on the rest of the property and he now sprays all the varieties with Foli-Zyme plus Stoller’s chelated nutrients. Although the symptoms of iron deficiency are never as bad as in the ‘problem patch’, he still sees the benefits of using Stoller products on the rest of the vineyard.

WHY DO GRAPEVINESNEED IRON?

respiration and cell strengthening.

Iron deficiency in grapevines decreases leaf

growth and photosynthetic efficiency and reduces yield due to

Iron deficiency is more likely to occur in alkaline

(high pH) soils and waterlogged soils where

uptake of iron is inhibited.

Yellowing of young leaves and shoots is a typical

symptom of iron deficiency. Symptoms are generally a better indicator of iron

deficiency than leaf or tissue tests, but it is always a good

idea to talk to your crop advisor or agronomist.

Soil test results only supply part of the picture as levels of iron can be quite high in soils, but restricted uptake

means the iron is not getting into vines.

MIXING & APPLICATION:

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

FRUIT QUALITY (GRAPES)

Bunch Elongation (Stretch): This product should be sprayed onto bunch stems when bunches are half to two-thirds of their final length (usually 10-15 cm), causes them to grow longer than normal and may prevent over-tightness of bunches. This application is usually applied 10-14 days before the first sign of bloom.

Thinning: If sprayed on flowers as they are beginning to open, this product reduces the number of berries on the bunch, i.e., it has a thinning effect.

Berry size: This product increases the size of berries when it is applied after the commencement of flowering. The greatest effect occurs when applied at shatter stage.

MIXING

Prepare a concentrated solution in 1 to 5 L of water with sufficient product for the required vat volume and strength of spray, add solution to water in the spray vat and agitate.

Citrus only: Ensure the spray mix is in the pH range of 4.0-6.0; however, optimum results occur when the spray mix is in the pH range of 4.0-4.5. Use a portable pH meter or calibrated pH strips to determine the spray mix pH. Sample 2 or 3 times and average the reading. Adjust high pH’s with a suitable acidifying solution and recheck the pH after 5 minutes agitation.

Wetting agent: Add a maximum of 10 mL per litre of a non-ionic spreader. Citrus only: If using an adjuvant with spreader, do not add additional spreader.

Precautions: Do not store prepared solutions for longer than one day.

CROP MANAGEMENT

(Fresh Sultanas): Prune according to the vigour of the vine. Avoid exceeding 8 canes except in special circumstances. Commence thinning in late October. Thin bunches to leave one bunch per shoot (the largest). DO NOT exceed 30 bunches per vine. Bunch trimming should be carried out after fruit set to reduce the incidence of tight bunches.

(Citrus): To maximize product effectiveness and fruit quality, ensure good penetration of spray by skirting and pruning the inside of trees. Hand thinning of fruit may also be of benefit. Even trees with a history of little creasing may require treatment in “heavy crop” years or with age.

Use of Stoller’s Gibberellic Acid, particularly at higher rates (20 ppm) can delay colouring by 1-2 weeks, early in the season.

GRAZING MANAGEMENT

Application of N-Large should be made when pastures are ready to be tested following removal of animals. Rank pasture should be grazed prior to application of N-Large.

Growth stimulation is usually seen within 7 days of application and ceases around 3 to 4 weeks after application. Stock should be kept off that treated pasture for 3 to 4 weeks in order to maximize the pasture production/growth.

N-Large will have little effect on the growth of broad leaf pasture components such as white or subterranean clover or on broadleaf weed species.

Note: N-Large stimulated pastures grow rapidly and the colour of the pasture typically changes from dark green to greeny-yellow. Colour and nutrient levels are typically restored after 3 to 4 weeks growth. The use of excessive rates of N-Large can make the new growth of some grass species initially appear yellowish-white and are not recommended.

APPLICATION

(Fresh Sultanas): Make sure vines are watered prior to application of this product. Apply in cool conditions or at night. Where this product is used for dried fruit production, drive-past overall spraying is adequate. For fresh fruit production good results depend on the thorough wetting of bunches and spraying at the correct stage.

If the bunches are missed they will not react to gibberellic acid.

FOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OTHER GRAPE VARIETIES CONSULT YOUR LOCAL DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE.

(Citrus): Spray when the weather is cool, e.g. in the morning or after an irrigation in the afternoon. Avoid application within 4 weeks of any oil spray as the oil restricts GA uptake. Typical water volumes are 5,000 L for small trees, 7,500 L for medium trees and 10,000 L for large trees. For creasing-reduction sprays to be effective, trees must be sprayed to point of runoff.

Pastures: Apply a single application using ground-rig sprayer. The application can be made at any time from the beginning of June to the middle of August.

Multiple applications of N-Large can be applied as an adjunct to rotational grazing strategy with applications every 3 to 4 weeks with the final application no later than the middle of August.

Lower rates of 10 to 40 mL/100L may be used on pastures dominant in phalaris as this grass is very responsive to gibberellic acid.

Higher rate of 40 to 80 mL/100L may be required on pastures dominant in perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass or cocksfoot.

COMPATIBILITY

Stoller’s Gibberellic Acid can be combined in the spray vat with 2,4-D as a cling spray, as well as with products containing Cycocel, certain insecticide, fungicide or nutritional sprays. Always do a small test mix to check compatibility before spraying larger areas. Always check the label instructions for all products used.

PROTECTION OF CROPS, NON-TARGET PLANTS

Do NOT apply under adverse weather conditions, or from spraying equipment, that may cause spray to drift onto nearby susceptible plants/crops.

PROTECTION OF LIVESTOCK, WILDLIFE, FISH, CRUSTACEA AND ENVIRONMENT

Do NOT contaminate streams, rivers or waterways with the chemical or used containers.

METHOD OF APPLICATIONAQUA-CAL is introduced via the fertiliser injector or added to the irrigation water. It can be used for permanent plantings such as trees and vines as well as transplants such as vegetable crops. It can be banded in the weedicide strip and watered in. It can also be banded into the soil prior to planting.Always use AQUA-CAL where there is adequate drainage so that salt can be leached away from the root zone.

Per Hectare Rates Use irrigation equipment to achieve soil application. Apply AQUA-CAL at 50-70 litres/ha to displace salt. Apply AQUA-CAL at 15-20 litres/ha in frequent applications (7-14 day intervals), to maintain soil/water calcium levels

SALINITY – THE PROBLEMSalinity is a measure of salts in soil or water. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is generally the salt that causes the most damage to plants and reduces yield.

Many Australian soils are naturally high in salt and agricultural practices, like land clearing, have increased salinity as well. When more water moves through the soil into the groundwater, the water table rises. Water is drawn up through the soil and evaporates, leaving more salt behind. Irrigation can also increase salinity by raising the water table and depositing salt directly in the topsoil. Many farmers irrigate with bore water, recycled water and river water which can be naturally saline and increase salinity in the root zone. High salt levels change the soil structure, reduce drainage and damage plants.

SALINITY – THE SOLUTIONGood salt management depends on a combination of different land management practices, including systems that combine annual and perennial plants with the best agronomic practices and crop rotations.

Stoller’s Aqua-Cal and RootFeed help manage salinity in the root zone. The calcium in Stoller’s Aqua-Cal takes the place of sodium in the soil, so it can then be leached beyond the root zone by rain or irrigation. THE SITUATIONThe award-winning Towalba Merino Stud is renowned for some of the most productive sheep in Australia. Run by brothers Garry and Warick Kopp, the stud is located near Peak Hill in the Central West of New South Wales. More than 15 000 head of sheep are grazed on improved and native pastures on heavy black soils and the sought after bloodline boasts large frames and productive skins with soft crimpy wool.

A wet start in 2013 left the Kopp brothers short on time for top-dressing their medic and sub-clover pastures with traditional single super phosphate. With shearing looming, their local Stoller Australia representative gave the brothers another option.

THE SOLUTIONAfter talking to Barry Unger, Stoller Australia’s Central/Northern NSW Territory Manager, the Kopps ordered Stoller’s ClearStart 15KZ+N. Shuttles were delivered on farm by a local dealer the next day, saving on freight and avoiding the need for the Kopps to truck in single super with their road train.

The Kopps used liquids on around 200 hectares and also set up a comparison trial. The Kopps used their boom spray to apply Stoller’s ClearStart 15KZ+N at 15 L/ha to several strips in a 60 acre paddock, treating about 20 acres in the paddock in total. Stoller’s Cropping Zinc Chelate was also used in some strips. Although it was too dry to see a visual difference in pasture growth or vigour, the stock clearly preferred the strips treated with the liquid products. Due to the dry conditions the pastures only got to around two inches tall, but Garry estimates they got as much production out of the 20 acres they treated as they did from the remaining 40 acres.

The time saved was by far the main advantage for the Kopps in using Stoller’s liquid products. Although Stoller’s ClearStart 15KZ+N is slightly more expensive than single super, this up-front cost was offset by being able to use the boom spray for top-dressing. Application was so much quicker and easier than using the spreader – Warick was able to do in a day and a half what it would’ve taken two people twice as long to do.

The results from their trials with Stoller’s ClearStart 15KZ+N were so promising that the Kopps will use it again this year for top-dressing their pastures. They’re also interested in using liquid fertilisers in their broadacre crops and are looking forward to trialling Stoller’s liquid fertilisers in a reasonable year.

THE CHALLENGEThe Von Peins run their family property at Bongeen on Queensland’s Darling Downs, growing sorghum, cotton, wheat, barley, mung beans and chickpeas. After many years of sowing summer crops with traditional starter fertilisers the Von Peins wanted to see if liquid fertilisers could help improve productivity. Four years on, the results are speaking for themselves.

THE OUTCOMECameron Steer, the Von Pein’s local Stoller Australia representative, set up a trial in 2009–2010 comparing traditional starters with Stoller’s ClearStart 22KZ. The Von Peins easily converted their existing planter so they could apply liquid fertilisers or traditional starters. In the trial traditional starter or liquid fertiliser was applied in-furrow at planting and yields, cost per hectare and net income per hectare were calculated at harvest.

Sorghum yields were 11.4% higher with Stoller’s ClearStart 22KZ equating to an 11.2% increase in net income per hectare – an extra $240 per hectare at current prices . The trial was run in a dry year and the Stoller products gave the sorghum crop a much better start compared to the traditional starter fertiliser. Even though the Stoller products cost more per hectare, that increase was more than offset by the increases in yield and income.

THE BOTTOM LINEStoller’s ClearStart 22KZ increased yield and net income by just over 11%. Minimal effort and expense was needed to convert the Von Pein’s existing planter to use liquid fertilisers. At the rates the Von Peins use, Stoller’s Australia’s liquid fertilisers are as cost-effective as traditional starters.

The Von Peins now spend an equivalent amount on Stoller’s liquid products as they did on traditional starters, but there’s an added bonus. Because Stoller’s liquid fertilisers are easier to transport, store and apply, the Von Pein’s operating times have reduced significantly – and that is adding up to substantial savings in time and money.

The Von Peins have used Stoller’s ClearStart 22KZ in-furrow when planting sorghum and cotton for the last four years. It is applied in combination with Stoller’s Zinc Chelate and Stoller “S”, a sulphur additive, based on soil tests. The liquid fertilisers are delivered to on-farm storage via B-Doubles and the ease of handling and application is saving them the time and hassle of dealing with traditional starters.

PLANTS NEED NUTRIENTS IN A FORM THEY CAN ABSORB

One of the biggest factors limiting crop growth and yield is the level of nutrients available to the crop. Trace element levels in the soil aren’t always sufficient for optimum crop growth, or they might be in a form that plants can’t readily access. It’s important to make sure that fertiliser use efficiency is high to get the best growth response from the crop and ensure you maximise every dollar.

Most of the trace elements used in fertilisers start off as metal salts (e.g. zinc oxide, zinc sulphate) and while some of these salts are soluble, they can also react with other elements in the soil, spray tank or plant tissue. When these reactions take place, trace elements can be tied up in compounds that aren’t water soluble or in a form that plants can’t access.

In some cases, soil tests can show high levels of trace elements but tissue tests or plant symptoms indicate a deficiency. This means that trace elements aren’t reaching the plant, and simply applying more of the same fertiliser won’t be effective. Zinc and other trace elements often aren’t very mobile within the plant, so trace elements need to be applied in a form that can be absorbed where plants need them most.

Roots control both the nutrient uptake and the hormonal balance for the whole plant and consequently its ability to withstand stress and achieve higher yields.

CHELATES MOVE EASILY THROUGH PLANTS

HOW DO CHELATES HELP?One of the ways to prevent trace elements from reacting with other elements in the soil, spray tank or plant tissue is to bind them to another agent, forming a chelate. Chelate comes from the Greek word for claw. Chelating agents hold onto trace elements like a claw and stop them from binding to other elements - the end result is called a chelate. As a chelate, the trace element is in a more stable and water soluble form that plants can use.

USING A CHELATE AGENT:

n Protects the trace elements from binding to other elements

The chelating agent forms a strong bond with the element and ensures it gets to the plant. The chelating agent and each element have a ‘charge’. Cations (positively charged ions e.g. zinc and magnesium) and anions (negatively charged ions e.g. phenolic acid) are like magnets, with positive and negative ions attracted to each other.

n Improves application efficiency

More of the trace element applied is able to be absorbed by the plants, so less is needed to achieve the same result.

If the chelating agent wasn’t in place, much of the zinc applied would bond with other elements and not be as available to the plant.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHELATING AGENT?

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHELATE FERTILISER?

A good chelating agent is one that makes strong bonds (log k>12) of consistent strength across a range of nutrients, but still maintains a high availability of the nutrient to the plant. You can use the log K values to make comparisons among the different chelate fertilisers.

There are a range of different chelating agents that can be used to improve fertiliser efficiency and these can either be organic (e.g. phenolic acid, citric acid) or synthetic (e.g. EDTA, HEDTA) chelating agents.

Each chelating agent holds on or binds to nutrients at different strengths. The strength of these bonds (and the effectiveness of the chelate) can be measured using a log K value. This is an important feature of the different chelating agents and is a good measure to compare across products.

A high log K value (>12) represents a strong bond between the chelate and nutrient. This means that the nutrient will be more available to the plant giving a stronger crop response. Chelates with a high log K value are also more stable in alkaline soils, keeping the nutrients in a plant available form for longer.

The same chelate can have different strength bonds (log K values) with different nutrients. It is important to choose a chelate that binds with a similar strength to a range of nutrients. If there is a weaker bond with one or two nutrients, these can be displaced and the crop will not see the benefit of all the different nutrients applied. This is another important factor to consider when comparing chelate fertilisers.

Phenolic Acid

Phenolic acid is the main chelating agent used by Stoller as it creates strong bonds (log K>12) with a wide range of nutrients.

Log K Values

The following table represents log K values for products available in USA in the 80’s. The higher the Log K value, the better the response by the plant to the chelate.

A trace element, also known as a micronutrient, is an element essential for plant growth but only needed in small amounts. Zinc, iron, manganese, molybdenum, copper, cobalt and boron are all trace elements.

Chelated zinc applied to wheat was more than four times as efficient as foliar zinc sulphate applied to the same crop. Based on research trials from across the country, Stoller has generally found zinc application can be reduced by a quarter when using a chelated product (4kg Zn sulphate =1kg Zn chelate).

CHOOSING THE BEST OPTIONSince chelating agents were adopted in agriculture more than 50 years ago, many companies have come on the market with copies and variations of the phenolic compounds combined with nutrients. Globally, Stoller is one of the main developers of phenolic acid chelates and their formulations have been developed and proven over 40 years.

Trace element levels vary with different soil types and crops. It can be difficult to work out which trace elements plants need if you don’t know what they already have. Soil and leaf tests are the best way to find out the levels of trace elements in your soil and plants. These tests can help you determine if nutrients are deficient, or if they are sufficient but just aren’t getting to the plants. Get advice from an agronomist when interpreting soil and leaf tests - your Stoller supplier can also talk to you about the chelates that are right for your situation.

GENERAL INFORMATIONSP ZINC EDTA Chelate is a foliar or soil applied micronutrient and is non-phytotoxic when used as directed. It is completely available and absorbed by the leaf surface or the root system. SP ZINC EDTA Chelate can be mixed with liquid fertiliser solu-tions. When mixing SP ZINC EDTA Chelate with liquid fertiliser agitate to thoroughly disperse the trace elements. This can be achieved by adding the product to the mixing batch tank or inducting through a pump. When mixing in batch tank add product to water nitrogen solution before adding phosphate material.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONSSP ZINC EDTA Chelate is compatible with many chemicals includ-ing MCPA and 2,4-D Amine. A small amount of wetting agent or surfactant can be added (refer manufacturer’s label).

MIXING INSTRUCTIONSWL ZINC/MANGANESE Chelate will disperse in water with little agitation. Many pesticides can be added and applied while spraying.When foliar spraying WL ZINC/MANGANESE Chelate through conventional sprayers, use a minimum of 200 litres of water per hectare. When spraying with low volume equipment, 50 litres of water per hectare is usually sufficent. If less water is used, slight burning of the foliage may occur. A maximum of 5 litres per hectare per application is recommended. Aerial applications should not exceed 1 litre per 4 litres of water. If used as a seed treatment the product can be applied neat or with sufficient water for good coverage.WL ZINC/MANGANESE Chelate is manufactured to rigid controls at the highest possible concentration for effective useage. Any residue in this pail is water soluble.
