August 2016 • Dover, Delaware
President’s Message Sue Hoecker
Vice President’s Message Mary Dawn Ditty
Marion Lundgren and Quilts of Valor: Marion Lundgren has
been a long time member of our guild. About 3 years ago, she
moved to NJ to be closer to her family. She remains a member
and has agreed to travel here to tell us about her quilting /
sewing journey. We always like to hear other sewer’s stories.
While living here, Marion was the “Pied Piper of quilting “for
Dover. She warmly and kindly invited me and MANY others to
participate in quilting groups and to improve their skills.
Since moving, Marion has started a sewing group to work on
Quilts of Valor. They have the task of creating quilts for all
those who qualify in their development. They have presented at
least 13 and have many more planned.
Marion is showing her giving, sharing quilting spirit by agreeing
to present at our meeting! Thank you in advance, Marion!
Lenny Truitt, the DE head of QOV will be at our guild to
present a QOV to David Cass. Dave will tell some of his stories
about being a POW. Please, join us to honor this veteran with
a HH quilt presentation.
August Sit N Sew: Come join your Helping Hands fellow
quilters on Tuesday, August 23 from 9 – 3 at First Baptist for a
day of sharing, fellowship, and sewing. Each sewer is asked to
pay $10 to the guild which will go toward the room rental for
the day. Bring your sewing supplies and work on any project you
need to finish. If you need help, there will be experienced
quilters there who would be glad to share their knowledge
Summer is typically a time to step back from routine and enjoy
a respite with family and friends. Helping Hands is offering you
many great programs and workshops to learn from and enjoy.
Workshops are filling up…be sure to check out the sign-up
lists. This month is an opportunity to catch up on one of those
unfinished projects. Join the fun!
We all enjoyed Sue Pritt at our July meeting. Sue shared many
tips and tricks on machine appliqué quilts, and shared many
beautiful quilts with us. Pictures from her presentation can be
found on Facebook Helping Hands page.
Quilter’s Lunch and Learn plans are in full swing…look for details
in a separate article. It proves to be a great day with fellow
quilters.
Raffle Quilt tickets are still available. If you haven’t picked up
yours, do so at this meeting. It’s a small way you can help our Guild.
Barb Austin will have signup sheets for upcoming events...a fun way
to meet people and enjoy time with your fellow quilters.
2017-18 Raffle Quilt is currently being designed by ML
Kazka and committee. We will be forming a committee to
sell raffle tickets at events for this quilt. We need YOU to
help.
At our August meeting we look forward to hearing about
Quilts of Valor program. We have several guests. You won’t
want to miss this meaningful evening. Please join Marti
Chamberlain for our pre-meeting workshop at 5:45 pm on
“Rulers/Tools”…Using the best tool for the job, sliver
trimming, squaring up your block, fussy cutting designs.
And, of course, stay tuned to our Helping Hands website
for the most up-to-date information on Helping Hands
activities.
Looking forward to seeing you August 22nd. Remember
meetings are the 4th Monday of the month, not last Monday.
Sue Hoecker My Soul is Fed by Needle and Thread
Please join us every 4th Monday of the month at 6:30 pm. Skills demo at 5:45 pm. First Baptist Church of Dover, located
at 301 Walker Rd. Our membership fee is $25.00 per year.
Refreshments Robin Aschenberg
Hello dear ladies of Helping Hands.
This month is our picnic and we are having pulled pork
sandwiches and roasted chicken for our meat dishes. So, make
your side dishes accordingly. Things that is tasty with those
meats. It is summer so try to go "light and cool". I will also have
the rolls so you that want sandwiches will have that, so you don't
need to bring bread.
We can thank our president and vice president for helping me
to get this to happen. I priced the pulled pork at 3 places and it
was very pricey. Sue and Mary Dawn bought pork at Redners and
cooked them and it was a lot more affordable! Thanks Sue and
Mary Dawn !!
In September Bonnie Hunter will be here and I'm going to ask
as many of you as possible to bring refreshments again as we will
have extra "company” to see and hear her. I will have a signup
sheet at this month’s meeting if you’d like to jot down what
you'd like to bring then. Any questions? Please feel free to call or e-mail me at:
302-670-2535, and [email protected].
See you all at guild ! Robin

with you. There is so much to learn about quilting and there is
always something new to discover! Sew with your fellow quilters.
You will be glad you did!
In June, we had a brand new member attend the tree workshop
and she made some new friends and feels acclimated to our
group. You are so welcome to have the same experience! Continued on pg 2

have all expressed how impressed they are with our guild and our
friendliness! Gloria Stickney said, “It was a wonderful few days.”
Many thanks to Beth Flaherty for hosting Gloria and her team!
Jane Hamilton wrote, “I hope each of you has a new spark
ignited to label your wonderful work. Each piece you create is
special and deserves your label as maker.”
Sue Pritt thanked us for a gift certificate to Meding Seafood.
It gave them a little flavor of Delaware.
Our guild is warm and friendly and our speakers are aware of our
sharing spirit and our love of quilting. Let’s reflect that in our

Our Website Mary Dawn Ditty
We need a big favor. We need you all to click on this link for
our HH website to check us out. Then, it would be very, very
helpful for you to go to the site each day (or a few times a day)
for a while. What we are trying to do is have many visits to the
site so that Google will put the results up on the top of the list
when a potential new member looks for a “Quilt Guild, Dover, DE.”
Once we get many hits, it will work for us. We want to be
welcoming and let the community know we are here!
Patricia Kokoszka worked hard on this site and we really thank
her for this! This site will not be static, but will keep changing.
Our news and newsletters will be linked there as well so that if
you can’t find it in your email, you can go to our site,
http://www.helpinghandsquiltguild.com.
Thanks for the HELPING HANDS for your “clicking” our site to
rise it in the results!

while I have been busy with our farm and other
considerations...it is great to know that others will keep the ball
rolling for me, so we don't get behind in the progress of the
work. Come Fall all the finished ones will find a home as the
days get cooler and it's time to snuggle with a quilt!
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have
any questions about QFO or would like some work to do at home. Ann Fischer, Coordinator, QFO 302-744-9786
Quilting for Others will next meet on TUESDAY,
SEPTEMBER 13 at 6pm at the VFW Hall in Camden. We will
be doing our usual pinning of quilts and many hands make light
work! The "regulars" have been working hard all Summer,
and we have quite a nice pile finished or almost finished right
now. But we always welcome new members to our group, and
we would be glad if you would take a kit and get the top made
for us.
Many thanks to those who have pitched in to do extra work
Thank you to everyone who has made blocks for the
Quilts of Valor project. Please send us a quick e-mail so
that you can be acknowledged as a contributor.
We have several tops completed and need people to quilt
them. Backing and batting will be provided. Please let us
know if you can perform this valuable task or would be
willing to bind a quilt. Betty Rigo and Peg Gilson
Co-chairs, Quilts of Valor project
The Block of the Month (BOM) participants will meet at 5:45 pm prior to the October 24th meeting. During the meeting, we will
share our progress, discuss techniques, and address options for the 6B side blocks that some participants have indicated they may
wish to replace.
A gallery showing different block placement options is available at: http://tinyurl.com/HHQG-BOMoptions
Thanks to Barbara Sansone who made an EQ7 version of the quilt and Cindy King who offered to import fabrics for the
participants to be able to explore options with their fabrics.

Ladies --Thank you so much for your invaluable, incredible,
and most amazing participation in the mini and table
top/table runner challenges over the last few years.
You ladies are -- in a word -- AWESOME! During the most
recent challenges you have produced 80 minis and table
top/runners, a feat deserving of many kudos. Thank you.
Mahalo. Gracie. Danke. Gracias.
.
Because of the limited space at the Tri-Guild Event this
October and to place your donations where they will do the most
good, it has been necessary to sort these items into various
groups: Mini Auction, Quilter's Boutique, and the various Raffle
Quilt venues.
All proceeds from the sales of your gifts of time and talent will
come back to Helping Hands Guild.
Again, my heartfelt thanks for your overwhelming generosity.
"Mini" thanks. Linda Barlow
So please, start cleaning out those quilting and sewing items that
are ripe for relocation NOW and bring them to upcoming guild
meetings. Stay tuned for more details on the guild’s Stash
Relocation Event in November. If you cannot make the meetings, call
Ellen Malenfant (302-492-8715) to make arrangements for pickup.
Thank you for the items donated so far, there will definitely
be some “good stuff” to choose from at this year’s event.
We do need help planning this fun guild fundraising event.
Anyone interested in participating on the auction organizing
committee, please contact Ellen Malenfant at
[email protected] or 302-492-8715. Please direct questions,
comments and suggestions to Ellen Malenfant or Mary Dawn
Ditty at [email protected] or 610-428-9579.
This year’s guild auction, or Stash Relocation Event, will be
held at the November guild meeting on November 28. At the
Stash Relocation Event we plan to organize the donated items
so that they can be viewed before the auction begins. For a fun
filled evening, items will be “relocated” using different auction
formats including “Quarter Auction,” silent auction as well as
the traditional auction.
You can bring in your donated items for the auction at this
month’s meeting and in the coming months. We’ll store your
items bound for “relocation” (unwanted, unused and unneeded
sewing and quilting items) until November for you so you don’t
have to!
Check out the October/November issue of McCall's Quick Quilts and you'll find Marti Chamberlain displaying her "Seaside Breeze"
quilt made from a pattern published in that magazine. Great work, Marti!

The Next Raffle Quilt: We have a pattern and a plan! The pattern is similar to our current Raffle Quilt. The tickets for it are selling really well,
so why mess with success! But it is created by two different blocks and it will be in patriotic colors,
so it should have a different look.
THE PATTERN: See picture on right.
THE PLAN: The plan is to collect reds, blues, and creams/whites from guild members over the summer
months and then the committee will get back together to make the blocks and the quilt top in the fall.
So, please bring any donations of fabric to the August meeting. Fat quarters or yardage. Any fabric
not used in the raffle quilt will be used in some other way to benefit the guild.
Thanks, ML Kaczka and the Raffle Quilt Committee

August 16 Helping Hands Newsletter 5
The avid quilter will tell you if you don’t pay attention when using an iron on your quilt block or finished quilt
top you could ruin all your hard work. It is important to be alert when doing any pressing during your patchwork
and appliqué quilting. Pressing is a different process than ironing. In ironing you glide your iron across the
fabric yardage to remove wrinkles and creases. When pressing patchwork you lift and press the iron on the area
of interest, to flatten a seam either open or to one side.
Some gentle nudging of the seam allowance to one side with the iron is acceptable. Please stop using the iron
on your finished patchwork as an ice scraper; you’re not removing ice from a windshield!
There are some quilters who choose to use steam in pressing, others prefer a dry iron and spritz with water, or spray sizing/
starch. Whatever is your method remember to set the iron temperature to the fabric content and don’t scorch the fabric trying
to dry it out! Check the instructions with fusibles; each has its own heat settings and proper amount of time to apply heat. Often
small patchwork pieces and pieces with bias edges can be controlled better if stiffened, it is better to do this prior to cutting the
patchwork pieces.
There are many times when you can use your finger nail or small wooden tool to press the seam allowance and continue to sew the
patchwork until you have finished a unit in the design, such as ½ square triangles, 4 patch and 9 patch squares, paper piecing and
long skinny star points.
The opportunity to check your sewing is when you are pressing. Check for loose threads that are caught in the seam allowance
and show on the right side of the patchwork, inspect your seam allowance, are they ¼” consistently? When sewing a long seam such
as a border to the quilt top or sashings to quilt blocks, are the raw edges even, does it lay flat with no extra fullness? Inspect
your work from the front also; are the seams flat with no puckers or creases? Is the block the proper size!
Magazine editors and pattern makers often will give suggestions where to press the seam allowances. It can also be your choice
which direction to press the seam allowances. Does it show less shadow if pressed under the darker fabric? Is there less bulk in an
intersection if the seam allowances are pressed open? What if you spin them to equalize the patch; 4 patch intersections and the
center of star points? Is there a place on the quilt that has less resistance; under borders and sashings often make it smoother.
This is all a matter of preference, no one way works for every block.
You can streamline the process of pressing by chain piecing all matching units and carrying them to the ironing board joined
together and pressing uniformly prior to snipping the joining threads. I then like to stack the units/ blocks so all face the same
direction. This gives me the opportunity to position them for the next step without handling them again and keeping track of how
many pieces by separating into piles of 10 or what works for the quilt.
Our quiltmaking is a labor of love; we do our best to have the finished product meet our expectations. It is so easy to take the
extra steps to assure the desired outcome. Respectfully submitted, Marti Chamberlain
