The After-School All-Stars Las Vegas (ASASLV) began in 1995 as “Inner-City Games” when philanthropist and community leader, Mrs. Elaine Wynn, brought the organization to the underprivileged youth of Las Vegas. During the first decade of service to the community, we took more than 100,000 inner-city kids under our wing and provided them with free educational, athletic and cultural programs in a safe and encouraging environment. Based on research and experience, it became clear that the after-school hours were when our children needed us most. In 2003, the organization expanded services from weekend sports clinics to full comprehensive after-school programs, and changed our name to the “After-School All-Stars Las Vegas”.

After-School All-Stars Las Vegas is the only non-profit organization to offer free comprehensive after-school programs in the Las Vegas Valley. Other agencies offer similar activities, but on a fee-for-service basis. Furthermore, other agencies typically do not offer an academic component with certified teachers that actively engage students in constructive programs. These agencies certainly have a place in our community; however, ASASLV provides low-income disadvantaged students with the opportunity to participate in free extracurricular and educational activities, field trips, opportunities for youth performances and opportunities to attend community events. With seventeen years of experience, ASASLV is proud to be making an important impact on the youth in our community.

Across the United States, After-School All-Stars serves more than 92,000 youth at nearly 400 Title 1 school sites. Programs are managed by 13 individual After-School All-Stars chapters working in tandem with the National Office to maximize the organization’s efficiency and ensure quality programs for every child. Chapters include: Atlanta, Chicago, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, North Texas, Ohio, Orlando, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco/Bay Area and South Florida.

Three hours a day can literally change a child’s life. It is estimated that more than 15 million school-age children are on their own after school, and among them are more than 1 million in grades k through 5. Furthermore, in Nevada, 28% of k-12 youth are responsible for taking care of themselves after school (Afterschool Alliance, 2009). After-school programs lower crime rates, help kids graduate as well as gain the skills and mentors to prepare them for the 21st century workplace. After-school programs have also been found to develop resilience in adolescence by providing opportunities for growth, increasing academic achievement, providing a safe environment and creating supportive relationships. The purpose of After-School All-Stars Las Vegas is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in positive, constructive activities after school that have been proven effective in deterring delinquent behaviors.

We are excited to present you with the After-School All-Stars Las Vegas (ASASLV) 2011-2012 Annual Report. This year, we were incredibly encouraged and motivated by the work and impact that this organization has made in providing free comprehensive after-school programs for more than 6,000 youth at fourteen at-hope schools in the Clark County School District. Our programs provide youth with positive options and alternatives after their school day ends and gives them unique opportunities to continually learn, grow and try new things in order to keep them engaged.

Our school-based structure and high-quality programs truly set us apart. Our enrichment programs include a wide range of activities from a drop-out prevention program called We Are Ready, to an outdoor wilderness exploration program called Lifetime Adventures, to a media studies and video production program called Media All-Stars, to just about any after-school program you could imagine including sports, music, dance, cooking, art, drama and academic-based programs focused on homework assistance. We are in the business of helping our community’s youth succeed by giving them skills, learning experiences and positives alternatives during out-of-school time.

We are honored to be a part of a national organization that is not only able to change lives, but focuses on developing our youth to ensure that they are safe, provided with positive opportunities and encouraged to succeed in school. We are grateful to the foundations, corporations, board members, community leaders, donors, volunteers, principals and site leaders that support our mission and efforts. None of this is possible without you. Together we look forward to another successful year of empowering the youth of Las Vegas.

Teacher’s Note:

A 3rd grade student transferred to our school from California where he was living with a physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive parent. The student missed a lot of school. When he was in school, he displayed challenging behaviors that interfered with his education. He was ultimately retained, and continued to struggle. Earlier this school year, the student transferred to our school and began attending the after-school program on a consistent basis. When he started the after-school program, this student was reading 2 words per minute, and did not know his basic addition facts. At last review, he was able to read 15 words per minute, solve multi-digit addition problems, and has shown significant improvement in his behavior both in his regular school day classroom, and in the after-school program. He is making friends, and his self-confidence has improved greatly. Even though this student has experienced many negative circumstances in his life, the after-school program and its staff has provided consistent support and stability which has contributed to the overall growth we have seen in this student.

After-school Site Leader’s Note:

We had a mother come to us concerned about her son’s weight and wanted us to try to get him in a physical fitness class to help him out. He has been taking Hip Hop every session and last session he attended Wii Zumba as well. He is thrilled to have fun and sweat at the same time. One of the mother’s friends commented the other day on how much weight he has lost since attending the after-school classes. We have also noticed that when he signs up for a new session he always chooses a physical fitness class as his first choice.

Programs utilize certified teachers to provide homework

assistance, test preparation, and individualized tutoring in core subjects such as English

and Math.

Programs allow children to explore their passions, learn

new skills and participate in fun, experiential, enrichment activities. Classes such as

All students received a free meal from Three Square’s Kids Cafe program.

The charts below provide a five-year analysis of academic achievement in reading and math for schools with After-School All-Stars Las Vegas programs. Students who have met or exceeded standards have increased an average of 6% in Reading and 13.6% in Math as compared from the 2007-2008 school year to the 2011-2012 school year. Our students have also shown substantial growth in social, emotional and success indicators. They have better peer relationships, improved attitudes towards school, improved study habits, higher grades, better attendance rates, decreased risky behaviors and increased intrinsic motivation as evidenced by student surveys, report cards and referrals to the principal or dean.

Our partnering school sites have achieved remarkable accomplishments during the 2011-2012 school year, which include:

Bridger Middle School• Math scores for Criterion Referenced Test (CRT) State Assessments were above the state goal with 68% of students meeting or exceeding standards.• Had one of the largest secondary after-school programs in CCSD (51% of school population participated), as well as one of the highest after-school attendance records on a daily basis. • Designated as a School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America.

Brown Middle School• Demonstrated 25.8% growth in math on the 2011 CRT State Assessments.• Achieved a 7% increase in the number of proficient students on the 2011 Nevada Writing Proficiency Exam.

Cashman Middle School• In the last four years, there has been growth in all subgroups in the mathematics portion of the CRTs.

CP Squires Elementary School• Moved from a 2 star classification in 2011 to a 3 star classification in 2012 for CCSD’s School Performance Framework, showing the greatest improvement in Academic Growth, Academic Achievement and Academic Growth Gaps. Total Performance Indicators went from 35.61 points to 63.5 points, a positive gain of 27.9 points.

Orr Middle School• Had one of the largest secondary after-school programs in CCSD (59% of school population participated), as well as one of the highest after-school attendance records on a daily basis. • Math Scores for CRT State Assessments increased 6% during the 2012 school year.• Ranked in the top 5% of all CCSD Schools for satisfaction with students, parents and teachers.

Rex Bell Elementary School• Received a 4 star classification in 2011-2012 for CCSD’s School Performance Framework, showing the greatest improvement in Academic Growth Gaps and Other Indicators.

Rowe Elementary School• Moved from a 2 star classification in 2011 to a 5 star classification in 2012 for CCSD’s School Performance Framework, showing the greatest improvement in Academic Achievement and Academic Growth Gaps. Total Performance Indicators went from 42.77 points to 80.78 points, a positive gain of 38.01 points.

CT Sewell Elementary• Moved from a 4 star classification in 2011 to a 5 star classification in 2012 for CCSD’s School Performance Framework, showing the greatest improvement in Academic Achievement. Total Performance Indicators went from 85.83 points to 90.11 points.• Math, Reading, Writing and Science scores for CRT State Assessments all improved over the 2010-2011 school year. Students improved 12% in Math, 15% in Writing, 12% in Reading and 9% in Science.• 88% of the students at CT Sewell now meet or exceed State Standards in Math.

Specialty Programs

The Media All-Stars Program offers students opportunities to learn about broadcast journalism, print media, advertising, film, editing, radio, television and digital media. The students in this program create Public Service Announcements, short films and broadcasts. The Media All-Stars are provided with opportunities to expand their media knowledge by touring the local newspaper facility, local television news stations, advertising agencies and the journalism and media studies department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

We Are Ready is a middle-to-high-school transition and drop-out prevention program for 8th grade students who exhibit early warning signs associated with dropping out of school. This curriculum is based on high school readiness, study skills, options after high school and career exploration. Students in the We Are Ready program have opportunities to go on incentive field trips, tours and hear from guest speakers. This program exposes students to unique careers and interests to motivate them to stay in school and achieve their full potential.

CampUs Las Vegas is a one-week summer program held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to ensure our graduating 8th grade students are well prepared to enter and graduate from high school. The purpose of this camp is to focus on students who are at-risk of dropping out and prepare them for academic and social success in high school and beyond. This camp focuses on building relationships with role models and mentors from their communities, study skills, leadership skills and college preporatory skills. Going to the movies, swimming, sports, improv comedy and other fun activities are also integral pieces of CampUs Las Vegas.

Since 2007, Lifetime Adventures’ mission has been to expose underserved middle-school students to environments outside of their neighborhoods and to promote youth outdoor learning and wilderness travel. The program uses outdoor activities as a tool to develop positive social skills that transfer directly to each student’s day-to-day life. Youth involved in Lifetime Adventures are educated about responsibility, teamwork, trust, personal growth, community service learning and stewardship for the environment. Students also take several field trips to places such as Mt. Charleston and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

In addition to providing comprehensive after-school programs at fourteen school sites, ASASLV also provided numerous field trips and special event opportunities to the students in our programs. A few examples include field trips to the Springs Preserve, UNLV Athletics sports clinics and the West Coast Conference sponsored by Zappos.com.

Media All-Stars programParticipants had several field trip opportunities to places including the Ká by Cirque du Soleil, Las Vegas Review-Journal, UNLV Hank Greenspun School of Journalism & Media Studies, R&R Partners and local news stations (Channel 3 and Channel 8).

Lifetime Adventures programParticipants were provided with several field trip opportunities to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Gold Butte National Conservation Area, Channel Islands National Park, Sierra Nevada, Lake Mead National Recreation Area and Mount Charleston.

We Are Ready programParticipants had opportunities to tour their feeder high schools, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, College of Southern Nevada, Zappos.com and Univision.

Performance OpportunitiesAspiring young artists had opportunities to perform on stage at the All-Star Showcase event at the Springs Preserve and the House of Blues Holiday Recital. This allowed students to demonstrate self-expression, self-confidence, leadership, self-mastery skills, competence and self-esteem.

Jonas

Hello, my name is Jonas. I attend Bridger Middle School, which is a great school.

But what makes it a greater school is After-School All-Stars Las Vegas.

After-School All-Stars Las Vegas is an organization that lets kids participate in different types of classes after

school. Classes like volleyball, chess, soccer, Mad Science and much more.

I take Media All-Stars and Flag Football.

I was the 2011-2012 National Youth Advisory Board Member of the Las Vegas Chapter. This means that other representatives, along with myself, discussed with the staff of After-School All-Stars what we thought about the program through a student’s eyes. We discussed what the kids liked and disliked. Being in this program, I have learned many new things, such as being a better role model for my peers, having responsibilities, publicly speaking and being confident in myself. This position has provided me with opportunities like meeting Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger while snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, going to the University of Chicago and meeting the other representatives from their chapter, and meeting Mrs. Elaine Wynn and Sheriff Gillespie. Sheriff Gillespie arranged for me to participate in a fly along in a helicopter and I was on Channel 13 News. As you can see, I have been able to do many things and this is because of the After-School All-Stars.

After-School All-Stars provides kids with more than just after-school activities. It also gives kids something to do after school. Most kids just go home, do their homework, watch TV, play video games and computer games and eat. But with After-School All-Stars, kids can get their homework done while learning new things and getting active. The program also keeps kids out of danger. A lot of violence and drug use happens after school, but After-School All-Stars keeps kids away from this by providing fun and educational classes.

Lastly, I would like to thank the After-School All-Stars for enabling our school and schools across the nation to have this program. Thank you for the opportunity to explain why I enjoy the After-School All-Stars and what it has done for me.

My name is Jose. I go to Orr Middle School. I like the after-school program because it has helped with my grades. It helped me go from failing my classes to passing my classes. My teachers are proud of me because that is a big jump. Then I joined basketball and I am doing good in school and on the court. The after-school program has helped me stay off the street. I have not gotten into trouble since the program started. The program has helped me a lot.

I am Ana and I go to Orr Middle School. When I was in 6th grade, I was very shy. I didn’t really have many friends and I didn’t talk much. One of my friends told me to sign up for the after-school program. We signed up for Homework Help and Computers. I was really nervous to go because my friend was the only person I knew. Then we were introduced to some new people. I was really happy that I was starting to get all these new friends. Within a few days, I was gaining new friends and self-confidence. After-School All-Stars gave me the confidence I needed to try out for the soccer and basketball team. The after-school program helped me overcome being shy and I am thankful for the after-school program.

Hello, my name is Nadia. I am a student at Clark High School, attending as a freshman. Last year, I was at Cashman Middle School. At Cashman, I attended Lifetime Adventures, as part of the After-School All-Stars program. Lifetime Adventures has given me amazing opportunities. For example, I have met exceptional people and I have gone to conferences that have made me more open-minded. Lifetime Adventures has had an important impact on my life.

During middle school, I joined Lifetime Adventures because it seemed interesting and I was excited to go on trips. I had never been out of the state or anywhere outdoors. My first adventure might seem little, but it was dream come true. The first trip was located at Red Rock National Conservation Area. I thought I was not going to make it because I had never hiked. But I made it and hiking became my greatest fascination in life.

Lifetime Adventures has also taught me about preserving outdoor areas, diversity, teamwork, preventing obesity, and why it is important to stay in school. I am thankful for Lifetime Adventures and every adult that has made me who I am.

And the Survey says...All students at CampUs Las Vegas also took a survey, which asked them to recall their knowledge about different topics and assess their knowledge following their experience at camp.

The following are considered major outcomes and successes from the 2012 CampUs Las Vegas:

Research shows America is facing a severe high school dropout crisis, with 1.2 million students dropping out each year – one every 26 seconds. Many of these students are low income, minorities who live in urban areas. Sadly, a majority of high school dropouts do so during or directly after 9th grade.

After-School All-Stars Las Vegas launched a unique summer program to ensure our graduating 8th grade students are well prepared to enter and graduate high school. Building on the National ASAS We Are Ready curriculum offered during the school year, ASASLV created an intensive one week model summer program focused on preparing entering 9th graders for high school, college and careers.

The goals of CampUs© were to:• Prepare students for academic & social success in 9th grade.• Build relationships between campers and role model-mentors from their communities who are currently succeeding in high school and in college.• Teach students the study, leadership & college application skills they need to succeed. • Offer fun, creative programs in ASAS Program Model areas of Service Learning, Career Exploration and Sports-Based Youth Development.

During the week of July 9-14, 2012, 70 ASASLV students entering 9th grade were invited to participate in CampUs Las Vegas FREE OF CHARGE. The camp took place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The week consisted of daily high school transition sessions, college readiness sessions, leader-ship activities, sports and swimming activities, career exploration speakers and much more.

INCOME & EXPENSES

Income & ExpensesAfter-School All-Stars Las Vegas was successful in securing funding for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2012. Cash and in-kind donations were secured through a variety of sources. In 2011-2012, support came from eight Platinum members who donated $50,000 and above, six Gold members who donated $20,000 to $49,999, fourteen Silver members who donated $10,000 to $19,999, eighteen Bronze members who donated $5,000 to $9,999 and more than ninety All-Star Friends who donated up to $4,999.

Grants were received from twenty-one incredibly generous companies, foundations and government entities including: After-School All-Stars National, Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, Clark County Nevada, College Access Challenge Grant (Nevada System of Higher Education), Community Development Block Grant from the City of Las Vegas, Conservation Lands Foundation, Inc., Cox Charities/United Way, Findlay Toyota, Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, Henderson Community Foundation, Nevada Arts Council, Public Education Foundation, Speedway Children’s Charities, Taco Bell Foundation for Teens, Target, Wal-Mart Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, Windsong Trust, Wynn Resorts and Youth Service America “Lead Agency”.

78% of our funding is used on direct program expenses, which means that for every dollar brought into the organization 78 cents goes back out to our kids.

Partnerships with Clark County School District and 21st Century Community Learning Centers made it possible to keep ASASLV program costs at $1.50 per child per day.
