The Henderson-Vance CountyChamber of Commerce will celebrate 76 yearsat its Annual Membership Meeting andBanquet coming up on January 28. Theevent will be held at the Vance-GranvilleCommunity College Civic Center. Keynotespeaker for the evening will be NorthCarolina Governor Pat McCrory.

Governor McCrory came to NorthCarolina with his family in 1966. Hegraduated from Jamestown’s Ragsdale HighSchool in 1974 and earned degrees inEducation and Political Science fromCatawba College in 1978. In January 2013,Governor McCrory became North Carolina’s74th governor. In his first State of the Stateaddress, the governor laid out his vision forreturning North Carolina to prosperity witha commitment to focus on three key areas:the economy, education and efficiency. Tothat end, the governor quickly launchedeconomic development reforms thatconcentrate on private-sector job creation andretention. He tasked educators with instilling knowledge and teaching skills to ensure studentsare college and/or career ready. He began a sweeping upgrade of information technologysystems to make state operations more efficient and customer friendly. Governor McCrory willaddress the Chamber audience in his first visit to Vance County as Governor. An annual highlight of the event, the 2013 Citizen of the Year Award will be presented by the2012 Citizen of the Year, Dr. Beverly Tucker or his designee.

2013 Chamber of Commerce Chairman Hal Muetzel will give a brief farewell address.Chamber President John Barnes will present the Henderson-Vance County Chamber ofCommerce Annual Report and Program of Work along with incoming 2014 Chair, JennyHester. 2014 Leadership Class Schedule SetApplications are available for the upcoming 2014 Leadership Vance Program. Interested professionals who live or work in Vance County

are invited to apply. The program will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants who will be selected to represent all backgrounds,occupations and geographic areas of Vance County. The Leadership Vance program is designed to create a group of informed and dedicatedleaders who will contribute to the community.

The cost for participating in the 10-session program is $325 for Chamber members and $400 for non-Chamber members. Includedin the price are all expenses, meals and materials. Joan Robinson is a Warren County Native and former owner and operator ofEssence Unisex Beauty Salon which she ran for 12 years in Warren County. After sellingher business, she moved on to a career at Kittrell Job Corps Center where she has beenemployed for the past 19 years.

During her tenure at Job Corps, Robinson has servedin several capacities including Residential Advisor, Recre-ation Advisor, Orientation Coordinator, Career PreparationInstructor, and Work-based Learning Coordinator.Currently, she serves as the center’s Business CommunityLiaison. In this role, Robinson’s primary duties areeducation, policymaking and media outreach. She estab-lishes partnerships to benefit the program by conductingtours, hosting guest speakers, workshops, seminars, jobfairs and other community service activities.

While serving as a Chamber Ambassador Robinsonstated, “the Chamber has enabled me to meet and greetChamber members including company decision makers and gain many business contactswith business leaders and other volunteers.” Robinson has a cosmetology diploma andan Associates degree in Criminal Justice from Vance Granville Community College, abarber’s license from Harris Barber College in Raleigh and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociologyfrom Shaw University in Raleigh. Robinson serves on several community boards andcommittees including St. Augustine University, Kerr-Tar Youth Council of Government,Friends of the library, Vance County Learning Center, Henderson Lion’s Club, Old NorthState Tea Society and Shaw University Alumni. Robinson has one daughter Adrian. Duringher spare time, she enjoys cooking, fishing, and working in her flower gardens.

Michael Bobbitt has been a resident of Vance Countysince 1985. He is a retired certified audit professional withwork experience in the banking, manufacturing, retail, andinsurance industries in the US and the EU. Bobbitt is agraduate of The University of Texas and is currently avolunteer for the American Red Cross serving as a leader onone of the disaster teams for Vance County.

While participating in the 2011 Leadership-Vanceprogram, Bobbitt decided he needed to join the Chamberbecause he wanted to contribute to the economic growthof the community. He became a part of the Ambassadorprogram soon after graduation from the Leadership Vanceprogram. Bobbitt understands and lives the role of an Ambassador. He is very active inattendance of city council and county commissioner meetings. “Michael supports goodwill with his great smile and is always willing to help others with their business issues,”said Membership Director Annette Roberson.
