“Your first 10 000 photographs are your worst” – Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004)

I have included in full the letter recently sent out by the Golf Club to its members that details some exciting

developments on the other side of Corlett Drive.

Please note, that the Wanderers Club does not agree with Wanderers Golf Club‟s interpretation of the agreement

between the Clubs that the sharing ratio changes when the outstanding amounts have been paid, as is suggested in

the first paragraph of their letter.

Update on The Wanderers Golf Club long term strategy:

Dear Members,

As you are aware, our short term strategy is well underway. Just to clarify, this was to

raise sufficient funding through the issuing of debentures to settle the outstanding

amounts due to The Wanderers Main Club in order to obtain an improved sharing ratio.

I am pleased to say that we have paid the amount owing for 2013 and have enough

funds in the debenture account to make the 2014 payment. We will continue with

debenture sales until we reach our target. These funds will be repaid to the debenture

holders through the sale of two small portions of land that will have no impact on the

day-to-day activities at the club. Sufficient interest has been received indicating that the

anticipated value for these parcels of land will be achieved. We will keep you updated.

With regard to the long term strategy, our membership granted the General Committee

the authority to investigate further land sales/options. Included in the objective was to

receive upfront funding, replace our existing club house in order to provide the club with

a building with improved traffic management and improved facilities that would benefit

our members, allow us to compete favourably in the club environment and to capitalise on

our prime location for quality corporate events and functions. In addition we wish to

replace our now antiquated irrigation system and upgrade our golf course which is in

need of improvement in certain areas. The club was to have sufficient funding and

annuity income, whether from investment of such funding or otherwise, after all of this to

achieve our stated goals.

To this end we have explored potential development of the existing club house site as

well as possible opportunities along our Rudd Road boundary. As expected, we have

h ad great interest shown by the market and we have narrowed down the potential

candidates to three influential vendors/developers.

As The Wanderers Club is our partner on all property matters it became obvious that we

were at the stage where we needed to include the club in our strategy and to solicit

approval for our proposals.

I am delighted to report that The Wanderers Club shares in our view of our future and

has emphatically endorsed our strategy.

This is indeed good news and places The Wanderers Golf Club on a path that will

ensure our club's existence well into the 22nd century and beyond. There are certainly

exciting times ahead for your golf club as well as for The Wanderers Club!!

We will keep all members informed of our progress on these matters and we look forward

to sharing more detailed plans in the New Year as developments unfold.

The holiday season is rapidly approaching and the madness on the roads is about to begin, so please take care on

your travels and have a wonderful break (but remember not to over indulge, otherwise the first couple of weeks in

January are going to be hell in the gym…).

Regards

Antony

Splitting of Food & Beverage Bills

Should members wish to pay individually for food and beverage items while in a group, please inform

your waiter beforehand as the splitting of bills at tables can no longer be done. This ruling has been

implemented to minimize the possibility of the misappropriation of money and to avoid delays that

inconvenience other members.

Use of Member’s Smart Cards

It has come to our attention that some members hand their cards to friends or family members who are not

members enabling them access to the Club and take advantage of the discounts in the bar and restaurant.

This is in breach of the Club‟s rules and should non-members with to avail themselves of the Club‟s

facilities please encourage them to join as members.

We have also noticed that there are members who do not take advantage themselves of the discounts and

should you wish to learn more about this, please click on the link below.

Words of Praise indeed from a very happy visitor to our Club

Dear Wanderers Management Team

I‟d like to express my sincere gratitude for the outstanding service and assistance given to me yesterday

afternoon, 5 December 2013, between 1730 and 1830; by your Duty Manager and employees of Hope Security.

Having parked my car in the front parking area, I was busy hurrying towards the clubhouse to attend my

company‟s December function. As I was packing my wallet and car key into my pockets, my car key fell out

onto the grid drain cover and into the storm drain below! I was in a serious pickle and rather distressed since

lead times on this particular electronic car key would likely run into many weeks. Also, it was starting to get

dark and storm clouds were looming.

The duty manager and Hope Security team immediately assisted me. The very heavy drain cover was removed

and my key was recovered from the drainage pipe beneath the road. This took about an hour of back breaking

and dirty work!

The following Hope Security employees are to be commended for their service:

Meshack

Jeffrey

Gabelo

Brian

Excellent customer service of this quality is refreshing and inspirational. Well done to everybody. Please pass

this note onto the Hope Security Management Team. I‟d appreciate your confirmation on this. We look forward

to using your facilities again.

Kind Regards

Graham Stripp

Time Trial Challenge 2013 . . .

6 clubs competing against each other...

In 6 events...

And 4 categories...

Over 5km...

Time trial challenge is probably best summed up as "an evening of running, raffles, drinks and food". Or

for those that are a little more competitive, a competition between 6 local athletic clubs, paired into teams,

who run each other‟s time trials once a year as a mini race; in club colours of course with the aim

of promoting spirit and co-operation between the clubs. Every runner who finishes gets a point in their

respective category (walkers, ladies, senior men and vet + men).

This year kicked off with Wanderers and Old Eds (our partners in the challenge) aiming to defend their

title for the 4th

year in a row. The points system experimented with last year was still in place which was

going to make it harder for us to keep up. Right from the start, Pirates/Manoni and Kudus/Chambers made

it known that there was no way they were giving up without a fight! A hardy bunch of die-hards made it

through to most of the challenges – running their way around Zoo Lake, over the greens at Parkview Golf

course, meandering through Houghton, puffing through Wits campus and through the Emmarentia

Botanical Gardens.

Our performance in the first half of the year was dismal, and the other teams rapidly pulled ahead with no

competition from us. At the beginning of the second half of the year, there were almost celebrations when

we came second and not third at the Pirates challenge in one of the categories.

Encouraged by the smallest of improvements, we pitched up at the penultimate challenge and were most

pleased with ourselves when we came second in two categories! The competition between Pirates/Manoni

and Kudus/Chambers was still intense though and it was all down to the final challenge which was hosted

by Wanderers. Although our normal time trial is a Thursday night, the Challenge was moved to a

Wednesday in order to be able to properly celebrate the spirit behind the challenge. And imagine our

delight when we won one of the categories! We were moving up in the world! However, it was a case of

too little too late for Wanderers. And for Kudus/Chambers as Pirates/Manoni managed to increase their

lead by 1 point and win the overall challenge for the year.

Final standings were:

1st place - Pirates/Manoni

2nd place - Kudus/Chambers

3rd place - Wanderers/Old Eds

Thanks again to all those that participated – let‟s keep the momentum up and get the trophy back into the

Wanderers cabinet! I encourage all Wanderers members to join us in representing the club over 5km!

Fast, Slow, Runner or Walker – you all count and get us points!

Club News:

The finals of the Club Championships took place on Tuesday 29th at the Wanderers Squash Club.

Defending champion Ritin Chauhan took on No.1 seed Jacek Lyzwa in the final with his family

supporting him from the gallery for his first Championship tournament. The first game of the final was a

mighty tussle between the two with Ritin taking the game in the tie-breaker 17/15. Jacek fought back in

the second showing his youthfulness and speed on the court by winning the game 15/9. However, the

experience of the defending champion showed in the third and the fourth game when he took the match

3/1 (17/15, 9/15, 15/12, 15/9). Ritin was pleased with his victory and thanked his opponent for a great

match.

House-Keeping at the courts:

The refurbishment of the showers is finished at last and a pleasing result giving us a larger, cleaner-

looking facility than before. The lockers have catches installed which will require your own locks to

secure your stuff. Many thanks to the Main Club for their response to our upgrade request.

On a sadder note, Court 4, and to a lesser extent, Court 3, have been badly marked by some irresponsible

person(s) using black-soled shoes. This seems to have happened on a weekend when there is little

supervision. I ask all the Members to please take note of players‟ shoes……there are notices on the court

doors which say that dark-soled shoes are not allowed (this also applies to so-called “Non-Marking”

black-soled shoes).

You may have noticed that since Gary Plumstead has joined our team, the notice board and other areas

have been spruced-up with pictures and notices. Also, his regular newsletters are an indication of new

things happening in our Club. Please support his initiatives and his “Mellow” evenings. Well done

Gary………keep it up.

Enjoy your Xmas & New Year Celebrations, but be ready for a hectic squash calendar next

year………and don‟t forget that entries are open for the World Masters Squash Tournament in Hong

Kong from July 4 to 14th.

Yours in Squash, Dave Grant

The Cricket section held their 2

nd annual Golf day fundraiser on Wednesday, 4 Dec at Killarney Country Club. The

event was very well received by all who played. The funds raised will help tremendously towards our development plans for the rest of the season. Thanks go to the Cricket Committee members; Dale Hermanson, Mike Sacher, Frank Auger and Jeff Levin for the hard work on the Golf day. Special thanks go to our Golf day sponsors; Zurich Insurance, Peugeot South Africa, About Air Pollution, Tsogo Sun, Sel et Poivre restaurant, Ambassador Duty Free, Assign Services, Northrand Insurance, Decision Gifts, Catz Digital, Melbro Holdings, Panache Spices and Lubman. For the 2

nd time we managed to organize a donation to a charity. This year, Cotlands received a very kind donation

of toys, from the Crazy Store, and cash from the players in the golf day. The Sunday Limited over’s leagues are coming to an end, with one fixture left for a few of the teams in January. All four of our Sunday Limited over’s teams are in the top half of their respective leagues, but unfortunately it seems a Limited over’s trophy will elude the mighty Chariots this season. The Sunday Time leagues will commence from the third weekend in January. Hopefully we can match the two Time league trophies won last season. The Cricket section mourns the passing of Tata Madiba and will be showing our respects with a minutes silence before our last fixtures for the year on Sunday. Wanderers Cricket Club golf day fundraiser; Mike Sacher (left) and Dale Hermanson (right) handed over the toys donation from the Crazy Store to Cotlands for Xmas gifts for their kids. CLOSING OF 2013

Another enjoyable year soon comes to a close with the number of tennis members enjoying our

wonderful facilities continuing to increase. We welcome all new members who joined us this year and

hope they will have a long and happy membership at the club.

For the approaching holiday season we wish all our members a happy and peaceful one and for those

travelling out of Johannesburg, have a safe trip and see you back in town soon.

DEVELOPMENT GROUP DOING WELL

We are happy and proud to announce that the decision taken to sponsor a group of 6 youngsters from

disadvantaged backgrounds under the able guidance of Petros Abrams and Howard Espley-Jones is

proving to be a worthwhile and successful move. The ages of the youngsters range from 12 to 16, they

are all playing a high standard of tennis already and seem to be improving with the passing of each

week. They are entering as many tournaments as possible and we hope to see some them reach the top

of their age group in Gauteng and SA in the not too distant future.

NEWS OF OUR INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR (Oscar Marino)

After a reasonably successful European tour of reaching at least the singles quarter-finals in all 4

tournaments he entered and a doubles semi-final, Oscar is currently in South America playing

tournaments in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile with the objective of regaining his world ranking within

the top 10 in his age group (70 to 75). We wish him all the best in achieving this and look forward to

his safe return soon.

NIGHT LEAGUE TEAM ENJOYING TOUGH BATTLES

This year, after not playing this league for a number of years we entered a team under the able and

responsible captaincy of Valentino Gerber. The team is thoroughly enjoying its tennis but it appears

that most opposing clubs are playing players of 1st and premier league level while most of our players

are at 2nd

league level. As a result they are taking part in tough battles of which they have won one or

two so can hold their heads up high. Well done guys!

We hosted the opening – round robin section of the JBA Trips and have to thank Maria and Barry for

officiating. A number of people did well and congratulations to them. Jeanette Shaff, Pessel Gellman and

Margaret Stoneham won the Senior Ladies Trips on Sunday 1 December – well done.

Mixed pairs are up on the board for entry. If entries are not confirmed with a copy of the receipt to

myself, consider that the entry will not be submitted. Sorry – too many folk have gotten away with non-

payment and this will not be allowed to happen again. Furthermore, please remember and be warned that

should your subs not be paid by year end, then you will not be permitted to enter any competitions,

internal or external as well as league. Come on folks the fees are minimal ….. Thanks go to Owen who is

chasing up subs payments.

Saturday league – there have been mixed to good results. I am still hopeful that all the teams can up the

ante and possibly achieve one or two promotions. The secret to success is practice, practice, practice. The

greens are all running so nicely that it‟s a pleasure to play at home. Well done to the green keeping staff.

We have also had a few boerrie roll braais after league and they seem to be a hit. Any volunteers to assist

and or sponsor? Nice to see all the red shirts out ……

Internal competitions are about to begin – Phil, Ronnie and Brian have sorted out the Men‟s comps and

Margaret and Jeanette the ladies – good luck to all participating. Please look at the notice boards and

familiarise yourself with when you are playing. Remember we need to get the competitions finished in a

reasonable time and so we will have to be relatively strict on dates and times.

Some news - the following wanderers players have been selected to represent the JBA for the

quadrangular next year are Men‟s A Bobby Donnelly, Men‟s B Shawn Nell and Men‟s Senior Stan

Friedman.

Various people have donated second hand bowls to the club and we thank them for these. They really

come in useful for corporate days. We have had a number of them and this does help keep the ship afloat.

Yet again – we need some volunteers to do duty at various competitions that we host for JBA over the

year. Please come and register with me and we will form a roster so that you can be allocated a slot once

or twice a year and at your convenience.

We will have an end of year braai after TABS on Monday 16 December – Day of Reconciliation. The

cost is only R30 and please put your name up on the various boards to facilitate catering.

Best wishes to all over the festive season, be safe if you are travelling and all the best for the New Year.

Yours in bowling

Wanderers Junior Indoor Hockey

Wanderers Junior Indoor Hockey is alive and thriving. We have just finished Series 10 of the PSI

(Professional Series Indoor) with exceptional results. PSI is an independent enterprise that caters for junior

indoor hockey. The junior hockey was played in the age groups of Under 12, 14, 16 and 18. Wanderers

has the largest number of players entered into PSI and competes in almost all the different leagues.

Unfortunately we have a far greater following amongst our junior girls than our boys.

Teams entered into Series 10 consisted of two girls Under 12, two girls Under 14, two boys Under 14, two

girls Under 16 and two girls Under 18 teams. Thanks go to all the coaches that assisted and gave freely of

their time for the teams and the development of our kids; Jaci de Lange (girls Under 18 Black), Haloise

Pearce (girls Under 16 Red and girls Under 18 Red) Greg Vercellotti (girls Under 14 Red), Pete de Lange

(boys Under 14 Red) and Peter Readhead (all the rest). We had very inexperienced teams at the girls

Under 12 as there were many new comers to indoor. They faired very well with both teams unfortunately

losing in the semi-finals. The girls Under 14 Black team was unfortunately knocked out of the finals on a

technicality. This however still bodes well as all of these girls were Under 13 this year. The boys Under 14

Black team played extremely well over the season resulting in them winning their league in a very fiercely

contested final (their strength being their willingness to play as a team). The girls Under 16 final was an

all Wanderers affair with the Red team running out convincing winners. Our girls Under 18 Red team won

their respective league. What is so encouraging is the fact that the winning team of the girls Under 16 and

girls Under 18 leagues was basically the same team with an average age of this team being 15 years old.

This is the first time that the two age group leagues have been won by the same team. As a result of the

successes of the Wanderers players throughout the age groups, a fair number have been rewarded by being

selected to play for the Gauteng Gryphons provincial teams at the Nationals to be held in Cape Town early

in the December holidays.

Congratulate all the kids that played in the Indoor Hockey league as they conducted themselves as perfect

sportsmen and sportswomen; playing hard and respecting the opposition and the game of hockey. They

have done Wanderers proud. A very big thank must also go out to all the parents that gave up their

weekends to allow their kids to participate.

Girls Under 18

Happy 90th

Birthday Peg Pentelow !

Peg Pentelow, Wanderers member, Legend, Icon, Mentor, Diplomat, Educationalist, Head mistress, SA

Hockey Manager/Coach and universally known as a collector of gadgets and braai cook of note amongst

many other things.

Peg gained selection and Provincial honours in Diving, Squash, Tennis and Hockey, played a great game

of Golf, and won many trophies for the Wanderers Bowls section.

Peg joined the Wanderers Club in April 1947. She was awarded her Honours Brooch for her services to

Wanderers Hockey in 1962. In 1974 Peg managed and coached the Wanderers women‟s club side on an

overseas tour to Hong Kong, it was the first club side in SA ever to have toured overseas at that time.

The team was made up of 10 Southern Transvaal Provincial players of which 5 were Springboks and two

1st league players.

From Peg‟s side it was a difficult tour to manage as it was during the apartheid years of isolation when no

one would play against SA and she had to deal with the media in Hong Kong who wrote the following

article in the China Mail on April 4th

, 1974:

Headlines were “S African hockey team not welcome”.

The writer further went on to say “We all know that South Africa and Rhodesia discriminate against

almost everyone except whites and we do not wish teams like Miss Pentelow‟s or her kind to visit us, and

I demand that the Hockey Association apologise and explain why the Wanderers are allowed to play here

as they have insulted the 97% of the population who are Chinese.

He ended by writing “we do not want you and your team Miss Pentelow!”

Peg diplomatically handled this whole political incident without upsetting our team members and the tour

continued with the Wanderers ladies winning all their games. Peg had been doing this job for the

Springbok women‟s teams since their first tour to the United States in 1963, also in Britain, Ireland,

Holland and Germany.

Wanderers Hockey has indeed been lucky to have the services of Peg Pentelow who built up the ladies

hockey section to set a record of achievement unparalleled in the annals of South African hockey. We

thank and salute a grand and wonderful Wanderers member on her 90th

birthday! I was fortunate to be a

member of the team that went to Hong Kong and we had a truly wonderful tour, thanks to you Peg.

Finally, a big thanks to all at Wanderers who have made things work for us during 2013. Wishing you a

safe, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Well, as the year draws to an end, Snooker has also reached the end of yet another fantastic and extremely

successful season.

The last of the Highveld Region tournaments took place in November and it was the turn of the Seniors to

play in a team event against teams from all the other provinces on the Highveld. The Central Gauteng 3-

man team consisted of Graeme Britten, Faraad James and Mukesh Dayah.

Wanderers played host to this, the final event on the Snooker calendar for 2013, and there were some very

strong teams entered in the event this year. The tournament was played in the form of a round robin event

and at the end of the day it was Central Gauteng who was just too strong yet again. They were undefeated

throughout the entire event and claimed the final trophy for the year, completing a clean sweep of all the

Highveld Region tournaments for the 2013. Well done guys on rounding off another phenomenal season

for Central Gauteng and Wanderers Snooker.

Our very own Fakhrie Gierdien had been selected to represent South Africa at the World Snooker

Championships in Daugavpils in Latvia, but due to a very heavy work load and various other

commitments, he unfortunately had to withdraw from the event. It is very unfortunate and we would have

loved to see him showcase his amazing talent at a world event such as this, but I am confident that he will

get the opportunity again in the foreseeable future. It is a fantastic opportunity to gain world class

experience from competing against the best the world has to offer.

Sadly, we ran out of time to play the Wanderers Club Championships this year, as a lot of players

indicated that they were not going to be available on the dates that had been suggested. Since we would

like to have a well-supported event and make it possible for as many players as possible to attend, we have

decided to move it to early next year. We will put notices on the board and we will also send out emails

and sms‟s to inform you of the new dates.

Well, all that remains now is the wish you all a very festive and safe Holiday season. We hope you have a

wonderful time with your family, friends and loved ones, but please be careful out there if you are

travelling on our roads and we look forward to seeing you all back early in next year. Happy Holidays! Yours in Snooker Hugo Lotriet

From the Chairman of the snooker section I would like to thank all our Snooker playing members for their

support over the past year. We have had another successful year and as you all know, Fakhrie won the

South African championship this year.

Good luck Fakhrie. From the Snooker section I would like to wish you all a happy festive season and for

those going on holiday, please drive carefully and return safely. We look forward to a happy New Year.

Whither cholesterol lowering agents

John Barnes, twenty years my patient, was livid.

“You‟ve changed your mind again about cholesterol tablets,” he almost shouted at me, “When are you

going to take a position and stick to it!”

He was completely correct: I have changed my mind repeatedly about whether or how to treat „high‟ or

„not- so- high‟ cholesterol levels – but in my defense, so has the rest of the world…

Phase one: we’ve got the tablets, so what?

In 1991 I wrote a piece for Highveld Style magazine in which I heaped scorn on the idea that cholesterol

lowering tablets could increase one‟s life span. Sure, I said, they were good at lowering cholesterol but

how did we know that cholesterol caused heart attacks and not that it was simply noted to be high in many

heart attack patients? If these tablets work, I said smugly; let‟s see the long term trials showing people

living longer on them…

Phase two: it works for diabetics then why not everyone?

By the year 2000, the environment had changed. A huge long term study of diabetics in the UK showed

without doubt that cholesterol lowering agents could improve longevity in those who had diabetes and

took cholesterol lowering agents. The logic of this seemed clear to me – if it worked for people with

diabetes, surely they would work for people like me (over 40 with no diabetes). I went on cholesterol

lowing agents, in my case a statin, and advised other people of an appropriate age to do the same.

I was not a lone voice in believing that statins were good for living a long time – currently an astonishing

25% of Americans over 40 take cholesterol lowering agents. It was at this time that I persuaded John

Barnes to go on them too.

Wanderers Wellness Centre

Page 26: Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 2004) - The Wanderers Club · 2013-12-13 · November/December 2013 Newsletter Chairman’s Corner “Your first 10 000 photographs are your worst” –

Phase three: where’s the evidence now?

Earlier in 2013, the American Heart Association and the American Cardiology Association reviewed all

the evidence for taking cholesterol lowering agents. Surprisingly the anticipated increase in life span for

people like me, over 40 with no other major risk factors, cannot be demonstrated. It seems that millions of

Americans are taking these medications, often with minor and occasionally with major side effects, for no

discernible reason.

But we need to be clear on what the review found in looking at thousands and thousands of individuals for

20 years or more: if one had other risk factors, the cholesterol lowering agents had a definite effect on

survival. „Other risk factors‟, in short, are obesity, hypertension, cigarette smoking, diabetes and previous

heart attacks or strokes. The common public health campaign in the USA of „know your number‟ is now

largely irrelevant. (The authors suggest it should be replaced by the slogan „know your risk‟…). If one

had no other risk factors then the benefit of taking cholesterol lowering agents could not be demonstrated

statistically. There is an obvious caveat to this division – as most people age they begin to shade into mild

obesity or mild hypertension. So as one ages one is more likely to fall into an area where anti-cholesterol

agents are likely to be of benefit. But the Americans have gone further than casting doubt on a mass use of

the tablets. They have provided a few rules that make the prescription much easier and logical.

Firstly, they say monitoring of cholesterol levels on treatment, including the widespread practice of adding

a second agent if the cholesterol doesn‟t fall to some notional level, is a waste of time. We assumed the

way the tablets worked was a „dose response‟ – the more one takes, the lower the cholesterol, the healthy

one becomes. In fact, the data suggests that where the cholesterol agents work, they work in an on off

way, like a light switch. Hence no monitoring and if one goes on a cholesterol agent it should only be one

of the statins – there are serious doubts about the efficacy of the others.

Lastly, they have provided a „risk estimator‟, an excel spreadsheet where one can measure one‟s own

possible need for a cholesterol lowering agent. The risk estimator itself has recently become a topic of

debate with some American experts saying it is still too strict and placing people on treatment

unnecessarily.

We put John‟s details into the Risk Estimator and it made him just below the risk levels recommended for

treatment. He was surprisingly unimpressed.

“Could it be that amongst all those thousands measured there was, say, 5% of people who got some

benefit from those tablets but their data is buried among all those for whom it was a waste of time?”

“It‟s possible, I suppose…”

“And then it might be possible that I might be in that group of 5% who live longer on cholesterol lowering

agents without other risk factors?”

“Maybe” I said.

“Well then I‟m staying on them, just in case. Wait a minute,” he said, “if the level doesn‟t matter anymore

do I still need to take these tablets every day? Can‟t I take them alternate daily or only during the winter

months?”

“There is no data on that” I told him, “but it‟s a free country – you can try it that way if you wish….”
