GeneralInformationIntroduction
ThishandbookhasbeendevelopedsothattheHenryBarnardfamilywillhaveacommon
understandingofthegoals,practices,policies,andprocedureswhichgovernourinteractionsand
behaviorsonaday-to-daybasis.Weaskthatallmembersofourcommunitybecomefamiliarwiththe
informationthatisoutlinedinthisbooklet,andwerequestthatparentssharewiththeirchildrenthose
rulesandregulationswhichdirectlyimpactthem.Ourhopeisthatwithacommonknowledgeofour
mission,ourgoals,andthepoliciesandprocedureswhichmakeattainingthosegoalspossible,wewill
haveasmoothandenjoyableyearinwhichallourlearnersareencouragedandsuccessful,andall
stakeholdersareempoweredtobeintegralparticipantsinthelifeoftheschool.Aswegothroughthis

TheRoleofLaboratorySchoolsOvertwohundredlaboratoryschoolsareassociatedwithcollegesanduniversitiesworldwide.
Thefacultiesoftheseschoolsincludescholars,masterteachers,andresearchersinvolvedinearly
childhood,elementary,secondary,andhighereducation.Laboratoryschoolsareinnovativeintheir
approachtoeducationalreform.Theseschoolsarealsodifferentinthateachschooloperatesaccording
totheneedsoftheinstitutionatwhichitresides.
Laboratoryschoolshaveadualcommitmenttoeducatechildrenandtoprovideaservicetotheir
college.Thechildrenenrolledinlaboratoryschoolsreceiveanoutstandingeducationfromtop
scholar/practitioners

FunctionsofaLaboratorySchool
Laboratoryschoolsservefivespecificfunctions:
• Providingclinicalexperiencesforpre-serviceandin-serviceteachers
• Providingasiteforresearchineducationalpractice,andaccessibleparticipantsforstudies
• Providingavenueforeducationalinnovationandexperimentation
• Providinganopportunityforcurriculumdevelopmentandrefinement
• Providingstaffdevelopmentforprofessionalsinprivateandpublicschools
TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolserveseachofthesefunctions,asithasformorethanacentury.
OurNamesakeandInspirationDr.HenryBarnardwasoneofthegreateducationalreformersofthe19thcentury.Bornin1811,
Barnarddedicatedmostofhistimeandresourcestoeducationalreform.Hewasoneofthearchitectsof
theuniversalsystemofpubliceducationintheNortheastandastrongadvocateoftheeducationof
women.Inhisearlytwenties,heabandonedapromisingcareerinlaw(hegraduatedfromYale)and
concentratedonstudyingandpublishedandeditedavarietyofjournals,includingtheAmericanJournal
ofEducation.HelaterbecamethechancelloroftheUniversityofWisconsinandthepresidentofSt.
John’sCollegeinAnnapolis.HisfinalprofessionalappointmentwasasthefirstU.S.Commissionerof
Education,in1867.Hediedin1900attheageof89.Inadditiontoourschool,anelementaryschoolin
Enfield,Connecticut,apreschooltosecondgradeschoolinNewRochelle,NewYork,andascholarship
programattheUniversityofConnecticutarenamedinhishonor.
CurriculumAsalaboratoryschool,theHenryBarnardfacultyareinnovativeintheirapproachtoeducation.
Thecurriculumiscontinuallyevolvingasthecontentisintegratedacrossmanysubjects.Theschoolis
learner-centeredandusesthetenetsofconstructivismasafoundationtoteachingandlearning.

Informationaboutthecurriculumusedineachgradeandinallspecialistareas,aswellasstudent
enrichmentandschool-widelearningexperienceswillbesharedwithparentsattheannualSeptember
OpeningNight.
ArrivalandDismissalStartofDay
Classesbeginpromptlyat8:00am,atwhichtimealllearners,regardlessofgrade,areexpected
tobeintheirclassrooms,outerwear,andgearstoredaway,andreadytowork.Learnersmayarriveat
schoolandenterthebuildinganytimeafter7:45am,andwillbeallowedtoenterclassroomsat7:55
am.Whendroppingoff,pleasegonofurtherthanyourchild’sclassroomdoor.(It’simportantthatyour
childlearnstoputhis/herthingsaway.)Learnersmaynotbeleftatschoolbefore7:45ambecause
thereisnosupervisionavailableuntilthattime.Iflearnersareleftattheschoolbefore7:45am,the
schoolarerequiredtofilereportswiththeappropriateauthorities.
Learnersarrivinglatemustbesigned-inbyaparent(ordesignatedadultwhoistransporting
them)attheschooloffice.Sincethecarportdoorislockedat8:00am,latearrivalsshouldenterbythe
mainentrance,andoncesignedin,shouldgounaccompaniedbytheparenttohis/herclassroom.
EndofDay
Half-day,three-year-oldpreschoolersmaybepickedupbyparentsordesignees11:25am.
Dismissalforallotherstudentsisat2:15pmexceptonshortdays,whenitis11:25am...Busridersand
Explorationsparticipantsaredismissedfirst.Allotherstudentsaredismissedimmediatelythereafter
andmaybepickedupbyparentsordesignees.Whenpickingup,pleasewaitoutsideinthecarportarea.
Ifyouwishtospeakwithateacher,pleasearrangetodosoinadvance.

At2:35pm,studentswhohavenotbeenpickedupatthecarportwillbeescortedtothemain
office,wheretheywillremainuntiltheirparentsordesigneesarrive.Customarychargeswillbeassessed
byExplorationsforanychildleftintheircareinthesecircumstances.
Parking
Visitor/Volunteerparkingisavailableinthecarportcircleatthewestendoftheschool.If
“carport”parkingplacesarefull,pleaseparkeitherinLotK(directlyinfrontofHoraceMannHall)or
inLotA(offCollegeRoadontheMt.PleasantAvenueside,downthehillfromRobertsHallandthe
busstop.Parkingisnotpermittedatanytimeofthedayalongtheeastsideoftheschool(betweenthe
schoolandtheartbuilding),inthecarportcircle,orbehindtheschool.Carsparkedintheseareasatany
timearesubjecttoticketing.TheCollegeindicatesthatanyonewhoparksinaFacultyorastudent-
designatedlotwillbeticketed,andCampusPolicewillnothonorrequestsfromtheschooltoforgive
parkingtickets.Pleaseplanaccordingly.

JoiningtheCommunityStudentAcceptanceandEnrollment
TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolfollowsa“rollingadmissions”programforgrades1-5
(spacepermitting),andatime-sensitiveenrollmentprocessasdescribedbelowforkindergartenand
preschool.Familiesdesiringadmissionmayapplyatanytimeduringtheyearbyfillingoutanapplication
form(availableatourwebsiteundertheADMISSIONStab,orinhardcopyattheoffice),andsubmitting
itwithsupportingdocumentationandanon-refundable$25checkattheschooloffice.Applicantswill
be“screened”byHBSfacultyandadministration,andifitappearsthattherewillbeaproductiveand
solidmatch,theywillbeadmitted.
HBSsupportsourlearners,andiscommittedtoservingourlearner’sneedstothebestofour
ability.HBSdoesnotdiscriminateonanybasis,andwecontinuallybuildandsupportadiverse
populationofstudents.However,shouldwediscoverthatdespiteourbestefforts,wecannotmeetthe
child’sneeds,orthatthereisnotagoodmatchbetweenthelearnerandtheschool,theHenryBarnard
LaboratorySchoolreservestherighttoremovefromclass,suspendfromattendance,ordis-enrollthe
childatoursolediscretioninafashionwhichallowsthefamilytofindanother,moreappropriate
educationalenvironment;andtorefundaproratedportionofpaidtuitionandprepaidlunchfees.
Ifalearner’sbehaviorbecomessoinappropriatethatitcompromisesthehealth/safetyofselfor
others,orcreatesanenvironmentwithinwhichlearningcannotoccur,andthelearnerdoesnotrespond
tocorrection,theHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolreservestherighttoimmediatelydis-enrollthe
learnerwithoutrefundingtuitionfees.Violentactionsagainstothers,and/orthepossessionofa
weaponaregroundsforimmediatedismissalfromtheschool,withnorefundoftuition.
Grades1-5SpecificEnrollmentInformation
Eachyear,therearealimitednumberofvacanciesinourfirstthroughfifthgradeclasses.Siblings
aregivenpreferenceintheadmissionprocess.
KindergartenSpecificEnrollmentInformation
KindergartenattheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolisa“happening”place,withtwelve
childrenenrolledineachofourfourKindergartenclassrooms.Kindergartenadmissionisinhigh
demand.Consequently,itistreateddifferentlythanadmissionsingrades1-5.
ThosewishingtohavetheirchildconsideredforKindergartenadmissionmustsubmitthe
Kindergartenapplication(availableonlineandattheschooloffice)withsupportingdocumentationanda

nonrefundablecheckfor$25.Allapplicationsforthe2017-2018academicyearmustbeintheHBSoffice
by3:00pmon14December,2017.
SiblingsofcurrentHBSstudentsandchildrenofRICfacultyaregivenpriorityintheadmissions
process.RemainingpositionsarefilledbyalotteryamongallremainingKindergartenapplications,which
willbeconductedon15December,2017.
Anumberofapplicationsthataresubjecttothelotterywillbecontactednolaterthan20
December,2017,toarrangeforthemtoattendascreeningwhichwillbeheldon12January,2018.From
thosescreened,theremainingopeningswillbefilledfromqualifiedapplicationsinpriorityorderas
establishedbythelottery.ParentswillbenotifiedofKindergartenacceptancewithintendaysofthe
screeningdate.
PreschoolSpecificEnrollmentInformation
HenryBarnard’sReggioEmilia-inspiredpreschoolservesthirty-sixthreeandfouryearoldseach
yearintwoclassrooms.Eachclassroomhasa1:9teacher:studentratio.Preschoolisourhighest
demandgradeintermsofadmissions.
Applicantsfortheprogramin2018-2019willbescreenedon9February,2018.Parentswillbe
notifiedofacceptancewithintendaysofscreening.Applicationdecisionsaremadegivingpriorityto
siblingsofcurrentHBSlearnersandchildrenofRICfacultyandstaff.Awaitlistisformedwhenthe
numberofsuccessfullyscreenedstudentsexceedsthenumberofspots.Afterthe10-dayperiod,
studentsonthewaitlistareadmitted.
Ifyourchildwillbeenteringpreschoolinthe2017-2018academicyearorlater,his/her
applicationwillbeenteredtheage-appropriatelotteryforscreening.
AllchildrenenteringtheHenryBarnardSchoolmustbe“pottytrained”.Childrenmustbeableto
independentlyundressanddress;independentlyusethetoilet;andindependentlycleanthemselves.Ifa
childhasan“accident”whileatschool,parentswillbecontactedandthechildwillchangeintoclean
clothes.
KindergartenandPreschoolSpecificInformationfor2017-2018
Allkindergartenandpreschoollearnerswillbeginclassesforthe2017-2018schoolyearon24
August,2017.Thespecificsofthefirsttwodaysofclassesareasfollows:

yourchildinhis/herclassroom.Meettheteacherandclassmates.
26August(Friday)-Halfdayforpreschoolandkindergartenwithdismissalat11:00am.
29August(Monday)–FirstfulldayofschoolforKindergarten.Half-dayforPreschoolwith
dismissalat11:00am.
Part-TimePreschoolOptionforthree-year-oldchildren.
TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchooloffersapart-timepreschooloptionforthree-year-old
children.Ataslightlyreducedtuition,three-year-oldchildrenmayattendpreschoolforthreehalfdays
andtwofulldaysperweek.ThosechoosingthisoptionattendalldayonMondayandWednesday,and
morningonlyonTuesday,Thursday,andFriday.
StudentPlacement/ClassPopulation
Earlyinthespringofeachyear,theHenryBarnardfacultyandadministrationbegintheprocess
ofdeterminingstudentplacementforthenextacademicyear.Weconsiderthematchofthestudent
withtheclassroomteacherandtheblendofstudentswithinaclass,asweattempttobalanceclasses
academically,socially,culturally,andbygender.Wedothissothatclassroomsatthesamegradelevel
areheterogeneousandbalancedacademicallyandsocially.Learnersineachofthecurrentgrade
classroomswillbedividedasevenlyaspossiblebetweenthetwoclassroomsavailableinthenextschool
yearsothatlearnersmayestablishnewfriendshipsandcontinuetogrowsociallyaswellas
academically.
Ifyouhaveinputyouwishtoprovide,pleasecommunicateittoyourchild’scurrentteacherno
laterthantheendofSecondTrimesterParentConferences.Onceplacementshavebeendecided,they
willnotbechangedexceptinextremesituations.HBSadministrationwillmakethefinaldecisioninall
studentplacements.

Tuitionratesforthenextacademicyeararetypicallyreleasedinlatespring,afterapprovalby
theStateBoardofEducation.
TuitionisdueatthebeginningofeachCollegesemester(AugustandJanuary).Tuitionpayment
planscanbearrangedthroughtheBursar’sOffice.Thosewhosetuitionisdelinquentwillnotreceive
progressreportsorgrades,andtranscriptswillalsobehelduntiltheaccountispaidinfull.Intheevent
oftuitiondefault,learnerswillbedis-enrolled,andcollectionactivitiesmaybecommencedHBSwill
seektorecoveranycollectioncostsinadditiontodelinquenttuitionandothercharges.
CommitmentDeposit
Familieswhosechildrenwillbereturningforthe2017-2018academicyeararerequiredto
indicatetheirintent.YouwillbesentaletterintheSpringsemesterrequestingacommitment.
Commitmentsmustbeaccompaniedbyanon-refundabledepositof$500perchild,whichwillbe
creditedtowardthechild’stuitionfortheupcomingyear.
Payments,PaymentPlans,andotherFinancialMatters
AspartofRhodeIslandCollege,TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolisaccountabletothe
CollegeandtotheStateforourfinancialmanagementandstewardship.InkeepingwithHBSpolicies
acrosstheboard,ourfinancialpoliciesarepersonal-responsibilitybased.
TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolisanon-public,independentschoolwhichreliesonlearner
tuitiontofunditsoperations.
RegistrationofalearneratTheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolindicatesanacceptanceofall
currenttuitionandfees,andanacknowledgementofparentalorotherresponsibleadultresponsibility
topaythetuitionandanyapplicablefeesinatimelyfashion.
AttendanceasalearneratTheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolisaprivilege,notaright.That
privilegewillbewithdrawnifthelearner’sfinancialaccountbecomesdelinquent,andatthattimea
financialholdwillbeplacedonallthelearner’srecordsuntiltheaccountiscurrent.
Tuitionisdueinfullatthebeginningoftheacademicyearwiththefollowingexceptions:For
easeofpayment,tuitionmaybepaidintwoinstallments–onepriortothefirstdayofschoolinAugust,
andonepriortothefirstdayofschoolinJanuary,orinmonthlyinstallmentsifapaymentplanis

appropriatepracticehasbeenviolatedormisapplied.Aconcernisamoregeneralstatementof

FormalComplaints
Ifastudentorparentisdissatisfiedwiththedecisionreachedattheinformallevelofthe
procedure,thestudent/parentmayfile,withintenschooldays,aformalwrittencomplainttothe
principal,whowillacknowledgeitsreceiptwithinoneworkingday,andwillforwardacopyofthe
complainttotheDeanoftheFeinsteinSchoolofEducationandHumanDevelopment.
Theprincipalwillinvestigatethecomplaint;willcommunicatewiththestudent/parentmaking
thecomplaintandwiththepersonagainstwhomthecomplaintislodged;willconsultwiththeDean
regardingfindingsandproposedresolution;andwillcommunicatetheresolutiontothecomplainant.
Becauseofthenecessityofschedulingmultiplemeetings,thegoalforresolutionistenschooldays,but
someprocessesmaytakeadditionaltime.
Ifthestudent/parentisstillnotsatisfiedwiththedecisionrenderedattheformallevel,the
complaintmaybeelevatedtotheDeanoftheFeinsteinSchoolwithinfiveschooldays.Theprincipalwill
forwardallapplicablefindingsandmaterialstotheDean,whowillaffirmthePrincipal’sdetermination,

BusTransportationBustransportationisprovidedbytheProvidenceSchoolDepartmentviatheircontractwithFirst
StudentTransportation,forallchildren(exceptpreschool)wholiveinProvidence.OnlyProvidence
residentswithbuspassesmayuseFirstStudent/Providencebusesfortransportationtoandfromschool.
FirstStudentTransportationhasaskedustoremindparentsthatchildrencannottakeabusotherthan
theonetowhichtheyareassigned.Thismeansthatstudentscannottakeanotherbustoafriend’s

FireDrillsInkeepingwithRhodeIslandregulations,theHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolconductsfifteen
unannouncedfiredrillseachyear,includingtwo“safety”drillswhichsimulatetheresponsetoaweather
emergencyorundesirablevisitorinthebuilding,andtwo“evacuationdrills”whichtakethestudentsout
ofthebuildingandintootherbuildingoncampustosimulatewhatwouldhappeninanactualfire
emergency,insteadofthetypical,shortfiredrill.

TheInternetInanagewhenthevolumeofknowledgedoubleseachyear,theinternetisanincredible
resourceforlearning,andprovideslearnerstheopportunitytoquicklyandeasilyaccessinformationfor
researchpurposes.Sadly,muchinformationontheinternetisinappropriateforelementaryschoolage
children,andoftenasimpletypographicalerrorinaURLwillbringthesearchertoagraphically
inappropriatesite.
TheHenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolprovidesarestrictedinternetportalforourlearners,but
nosystemiscompletelyfoolproof.Therefore,weencourageparentstodiscusswiththeirchildrenwhat
areacceptabletypesofsitestovisit,andwhattodowhenanobjectionablesiteopens.Teachersand
assistantscloselymonitorlearnercomputerswhenonlineaccessisbeingutilizedtofurtherprotect
learnersfrominappropriatesites.Learnerswhodeliberatelyvisitwebsiteswhichareunacceptableto
theschoolmayhavetheirinternetaccessprivilegesrevoked,andmaybedenieduseofcomputerswith
internetaccess.

HBS.ThisdecisionisatthesolediscretionoftheHBSAdministration.Foradults,UnilateralRemoval

participationinanyHBSActivity,event,orfunction,blockingofemailand/orIPaddressestotheHBSor

NewPolicy:HenryBarnardLaboratorySchoolstudentsareexpectedtobeatschooleveryday
whichisnotedasaclassday,unlesstheyareill,afamilyorhealth-relatedexigencyprohibitstheir
attendance,orinthejudgmentoftheparent,itisunsafeforthechildtogoto/fromschool.Ifastudent
istobeabsent,parentsshouldnotifytheschooloftheabsencepriortothebeginningoftheschoolday,
eitherbycallingtheofficeat(401)456-8127orbye-mailingtheschoolsecretary.
Eachlearnershouldbeatschool,inhis/herclassroom,andpreparedtocommencelearningby
theappointedhourofopening.Exceptincasesofneedformedicalreleaseorotherimportant
appointments,learnersareexpectedtobeactivelyengagedinclassesandactivitiesfromthebeginning
ofeachschooldayuntilitsconclusionatdismissal.Ifastudentislateinarriving,theparentmustsign
him/herinatthemainoffice.Ifanearlydismissalisrequired,parentsshouldnotifytheschoolinwriting

Excessiveabsences,lateness,orearlydismissalsinterferewithlearnerprogress,andmaybe

Rationale:Sinceeffectiveandauthenticlearninghappenswhenthelearnerinteractswiththe
materialsandprocessestobemastered,thelearnershouldbepresentatschooleveryschooldayfor
thefulldaysoastomaximizehis/herexposuretonewmaterialsandthecommunityoflearnerswhich
comprisehis/herclass.
Evenmoreimportantthanthesubjectmatterlearninggainedbyregular,punctualattendance
aretheimportanthabitsofmindandheart–consistencyandpunctuality–whichconsistentand
timelyattendanceteach.Resilient,successfulpeoplearethosewhounderstandthevalueof
commitment,offollowingthroughonresponsibility,andofrespectingtheirownandothers’time.

Additionally,itisimportanttoconsiderthelearningprocess–anordered,progressiveinteraction
throughwhichlearningisbuilt.Learnerswhomissdays,whoarrivelateregularly,and/orwholeave
early,oftenbecomefrustratedanddiscouragedbecausetherestoftheclasshasmovedonwithout
them,andtheynolongerunderstandwhatishappeningaroundthem.Thoughgoodteachingcanhelp

WellnessGuidelinesAbsences,Illnesses,andInjuries
Whenachildisillandcannotattendschool,aparentorguardianisexpectedtocalltheschool’s
mainofficebetween7:30and8:00inthemorning.Iftheschooldoesnotreceiveaphonecall,theschool
willcontactparentsofabsentstudents.
Ifyoursonordaughterdevelopsafever,hasacontagiousillnessorvomitswhileinschool,you
willbecalledtotakeyourchildhome.Ifyoucan’tcome,orcan’tbereached,we’llcontactthe
emergencycontactonyourchild’semergencyinformationform.
Wewillalsocallyouwheneveryoursonordaughterhasaheadinjury,or,incasesofothernon-
headinjuries,iftheschoolnursedeterminesthattheinjuryissevereenoughtowarrantinformingyou
immediately.Theprincipal,assistantprincipal,and/ornursereservetherighttodecidetosendalearner
homeduringtheschooldaybecauseofillnessorinjury.

Theschoolsettingisanenvironmentwherecontagiousdiseasescanbespread.Weaskthatsick
childrenremainhomeiftheirillnessiscontagiousandcouldcauseillnessinotherchildrenorstaff.
Parentsareencouragedtocallthenurse’sofficeandinformthenurseofanycontagiousillnessassoon
aspossiblesowecankeepaheightenedawareness.Contagiousconditionscanbeidentifiedbycertain
characteristicsincluding:
• Fever:Ifyourchild’stemperatureis100degreesForhigher,youmustkeepyourchildathome.
He/shemayreturntoschoolwhenfeverfree(withoutfeverreducingmedicationincluding
TylenolandIbuprofen)for24hours.
• Vomiting/Diarrhea:Pleasekeepyourchildhomeuntil24hoursafterthelastepisode.
• NasalDischarge/Cough:Ifyourchildhascopious,continuous,uncontrollablenasal
discharge/cough,thisincreasestheriskofexposureandillness,sopleasekeepyourchildhome.
• ChickenPox/Shingles:Childrenwillbeexcludedfromschooluntilallvesiclesandscabsaredry.
Thisusuallytakesaboutoneweekfromtheonsetoftherash.
• Sorethroat/StrepThroat:Asorethroatinconjunctionwithswollenglandsmayindicatestrep
throat.AfeverisnotalwayspresentwithStrepthroat.Othersymptomsmayincludeaheadache
and/orupsetstomach.Aminorsorethroatisfairlycommon,butachildwithstrepthroatneeds
medicalattentionandmayreturntoschoolafter24hoursofantibiotictherapy.
• Impetigo:Thisisacommonskininfectioncausedbybacteria.Lesionsappearprimarilyonthe
face,butmaypresentelsewhereinthebody.Studentsmayreturnafter24hoursofantibiotic
treatmentandsoresaredry.
• Conjunctivitis(PinkEye):Thisconditioniseasilyspreadbydirectcontactwithdischargefromthe
infectedeye(s).Conjunctivitismaybebacterial,viral,orallergic.Avisitwithyourchild’sdoctoris
necessarytoidentifythecause.Ifitisinfectious,yourchildmayreturntoschool24hoursafter
treatmentisinitiated.
Lice/NitPolicy:IntheUnitedStates,headliceinfestationiscommonamongchildren3-12yearsofage.Butthey
arenotascontagiousasyoumaythink.Licecannothoporfly,theycrawl.Transmissionoccursinmost
casesbydirectcontactwiththeheadofaninfectedperson.Indirectspreadthroughcontactwith
personalbelongings,suchascombs,brushes,hats,ismuchlesslikelybutmayoccurrarely.

AccordingtotheJournalofAmericanPediatrics,achildwithactiveheadlicemostlikelyhashad
theinfestationfor1monthormorebythetimeitisdiscovered,andposeslittlerisktoothersfromthe
infestation(July,2010).Forthisreason,childrenshouldremaininclassbutwillbediscouragedfrom
closeheadcontactwithothers.
Theparent/guardianwillbenotifiedthatdayifliceornitsarefound,andparentswillbedirected
towardspropertreatmentofthisconditioninthebestinterestofthechildandclassmates.Thestudent
willberecheckedthefollowingdaytoassesswhethertreatmentwaseffective.Iflicearestillfound,the
nursewillagaincontacttheparent/guardianforfurtherinstructions.Oncethestudentisclearedbythe
nursetohavenoactiveinfestation,thestudentwillthenberecheckedonceaweekfor3consecutive
weeks.Ifactivelicearefound,aletterwillgohomewiththestudentsintheclassroomaffected,alerting
parentstocheckchildrenathomeandtreat,ifappropriatebeforereturningtoschoolthenextday.
Asaschool,wewanttoensureallstudentsareputatminimalrisktoexposureofinfestations.
Therefore,thefollowingprecautionswillbetakenifastudentisfoundtohaveactiveheadlice.Inareas
wherechildrennap,thecarpetwillbevacuumed,andstudentswillbeeducatedontheimportanceof
keepinganadequatedistancefromoneanothertopreventanyhead-to-headcontact.Informationwill
bedistributedtoparentsontheimportanceofheadchecks,earlydetection,treatmentoptions,etc.

refrigerated.Inthiscase,themedicationwillbestoredintherefrigeratorinthenurse’soffice.
6. Arecordoftheadministrationofthemedicationwillbekeptinthenurse’sofficeincludingthe
nameofthemedication,dateandtimeofadministrationandpersonadministeringthe
medication.
7. Inhalersmaybecarriedandself-administeredwhenprescribedbyaphysicianstatingthatthe
childneedstocarryitonhis/herpersonduetoamedicalconditionalongwithparent
authorization.Thestudentwillbesupervisedduringself-administrationofinhalers.Theinhaler
canalsobekeptinthenurse’soffice.
8. StudentswithEpi-Penswillbeallowedtocarryontheirpersonsifdeemedappropriateby
parents,privatephysician,schoolnurse,andadministration.Ifnotappropriate,designated
conspicuouslocationsintheschoolwillcontainEpi-Pens(ex.Cafeteria,gym,library,andnurse’s
office.)Itistheresponsibilityoftheparenttobringinyourchild’sEpi-Penpriortooronthefirst
dayofschool.
9. IntheeventthatastudentrequiresEmergencyAdministrationofMedication,theschoolnurse
mayadministermedicationasorderedbythephysician.Intheabsenceoftheschoolnurse,a
trainedadministratorordesignatedfacultymembermayadministertheemergencymedication.
10. Administrationofmedicationsduringoffschoolactivities(fieldtrips):studentsmayself-carry/
self-administeraday’ssupplyofmedication,duringanoff-siteschoolsponsoredactivityif

concussionandassistinginimplementationofphysicalandcognitiverest,surroundingschoolactivities,
toassistintheirrecovery.
Aconcussionisatypeoftraumaticbraininjury(TBI)causedbyadirectbump,blow,orjoltto
theheadthatcanchangethewayyourbrainnormallyworks.Concussionscanalsooccurfromafallora
blowtothebodythatcausestheheadandbraintomovequicklybackandforth.
WhataretheSignsandSymptomsofConcussion?
Mostpeoplewithaconcussionrecoverquicklyandfully.Butforsomepeople,symptomscanlastfor
days,weeks,orlonger.Ingeneral,recoverymaybesloweramongolderadults,youngchildren,and
teens.Thosewhohavehadaconcussioninthepastarealsoatriskofhavinganotheroneandmayfind
thatittakeslongertorecoveriftheyhaveanotherconcussion.

fromplayrightawayevenifhe/shesaystheyfeel“ok”.
2. Evaluatebyamedicalprofessional:Thestudentmustbeevaluatedbytheschoolnurse
immediately,andreferraltopediatricianoremergencyroomwillbemadeifneeded.Ifthe
studenthasworrisomesymptoms:lossofconsciousness,repeatedvomiting,seizure,increasing
symptoms,decreasingneurologicalstatusthen911iscalledpriortocallingschoolnurse.
3. NotifyParent:Theschoolnurseoradministratorwillnotifyparent.
4. ObtainPermissiontoReturntoPlay:AstudentcanonlyreturntoPE/recess/playafteratleast
24hoursandwithwrittendocumentationfromahealthcareprofessional.Therewillbeno
exceptiontothis.
ReturntoSchool:Supportingastudentrecoveringfromaconcussionrequiresacollaborative
approachamongschoolprofessionals,healthcareprofessionals,parents,andstudents.Schoolstaff,
suchasteachers,schoolnurses,counselors,administrators,coaches,shouldbeinformedabouta
returningstudent’sinjuryandsymptoms,astheycanassistwiththetransitionprocessandmaking
accommodationsforastudent.Therefore,itisimportantasaparent,ifyourchildsustainsa
concussionoutsideofschool,notifytheappropriateschoolstaff;ataminimumyourchild’steacher,
schoolnurse,andPEteachertoensureaplanisputintoplacetotransitionbacktoschool.
Training:Theschoolnurse,PEteacher,AfterSchoolProgramDirector,andanycoacheswill
renewannualtraining“HeadsUp”programthroughtheCDCwebsite.ParentsandStudentswillbe
educatedviatrainingand/oraconcussioninformationsheetuponinjury.Educationforteachersand
