Henry Ford a successful tycoon in American Business world .

Ford the philanthropist and inventor .The Founder of Ford Motor Company .He was born in Greenfield ,Michigan on 30th july 1863.The Son of Farmer.Left school at the age of 15 .Famous for his assembly line production.

Early Life of Henry FordEarly Life of Henry Ford• He began with apprenticeship in a machine shop.• To survive from low wages he spent evenings in

repairing clocks and watches . • In 1981 ,Ford became engineer with Edison

Illuminating Company, soon he became Chief engineer .

• Now he had time for his personal experiments, on gasoline engines

• This lead to development of Ford Quadricycle .• Thomas Edison encouraged Ford .• Foundation of Detroit Automobile Company ,which

was dissolved later on .• Then he developed 26-HP automobile and Detroit

Automobile Company became Henry Ford Company .

• Now Ford developed 80+HP racer called as “999”and form partnership “Ford & Malcomson, Ltd”.

Model T was introduced in 1908. Steering wheel on left. The car was simple to drive, easy and cheap to repair. It was for $825(i.e. $20,100 in current dollar terms)

only. The price fell year by year. Majority of drivers had learned to drive on the model T. Ford was always eager to sell his car to the

farmers. He had a good network of dealers all over. Sales skyrocketed. Half of all cars in America were the Model T’s.

Model AModel A After the decline of model

T due rising competition, Henry Ford was convinced to make a new model.

He involved great technical expertise.

Body design was left to his son, Edsel.

The result was the successful Ford Model A.

Total output was more than 4million

Hence Ford company adopted annual model change system similar to competitor General Motors.

Labor Philosophy Labor Philosophy • The Five-dollar workday • Pioneer of “Welfare

Capitalism”.• To improve workers and labor

turnover .• He be lived in hiring and

keeping best workers .• He was the first to offer $5 per

day wage.• This lead to doubling of rate of

workers .• Also, he introduced five 8 hrs

days work i.e. 40hrs work per week .

• Due to high wages his workers could afford the cars produced by themselves .

• Ford always said that, ”Without changing the principle we have changed the method of payment”.

Ford Airplane CompanyFord Airplane Company• Ford entered the aviation

business during the World War –I.

• He started with Liberty Engines.

• His most successful aircraft was “Ford 4AT Trimotor “,it is also called as the “Tin Goose ”,because of its corrugated metal construction.

• He used new alloy called, Alcald .

• The Trimotor first flew in 1926,and was first successful US passenger airliner .

• Ford Airplane Division was shutdown because of poor sales during the Great Depression .

Willow RunWillow RunPresident Roosevelt reffered to

Detroit as the “Arsenal of Democracy”.

Help in mass production for war effort.

Ford’s Willow Run factory broke ground in 1941.

It was largest assembly plant in the world.

Peace & WarPeace & War• Henry Ford oppose war.• He thought war is the waste of money and man

power.• He criticized the people who financed & supported

war.• He tried stop such people.• He also met President Willson, regarding

maintaining peace but government gave no any response.

• The Ford plants in Britain produced tractors, trucks, & aircrafts.

• When US entered the war, he became major supplier of weapons, especially the Liberty engines for airplanes.

• Then Woodrow Willson encouraged Ford to run a seat from Michigan, in the US Senate.

• However, he was not successful as a politician.

International International EstablishmentEstablishment

• His philosophy was one of economic independence for the US.• His River Rouge Plant became the worlds largest industrial complex pursuing vertical integration to an extend that it could produce

its own steel.• Fords goal was to produce vehicles form scratch reliance on

foreign trade.• He believe in global expansion of his company, also that

international trade and co-operation led to international peace.• He opened Ford assembly plants in Britain and Canada in 1911.• Ford’s theory was that international trade was essential for world

peace.• Ford also opened plants in Australia, India ,France.• He experimented with rubber plantation.• By 1932,Ford was manufacturing one third of worlds

automobiles.• “Automobiles has so completely changed the American’s mode of

life that today one can hardly imagine being without a car. ”

Ford at RacingFord at Racing Ford maintained an

interest in auto racing. His involvement was in

sport both as driver and builder.

He entered with declined Model T in the races, and which later disqualified.

But after the rewokation in the Indianapolis 500, he dropped out of racing permanently.

Nevertheless, Ford did make a quite impact on auto racing.

DeathDeathIn 1943, due to the death of Henry Ford’s

son, Edsel, president of the Ford Motor Company, died of cancer, Henry decided to assume presidency.

But soon he started with several cardiovascular strokes and mental inconsistencies, and no longer fitted for the job.

In ill health he ceded his presidency to his grandson Henry Ford II and went to retirement.

He soon died due to cerebral hemorrhage at the age 83 in Fair Lane.

Honors Honors In 1999, Ford was among 18 included

in Gallup’s List of Widely Admired People of the 20th century, from a poll conducted of the American people.

In 1928, Ford was awarded the Franklin Institute’s Elliott Cresson Medal.

The United States Postal Service honoured Ford with a Prominent American series (1965-1978) postage stamp.
