Book Discussion—September 17 Consider joining the book discussion group this fall. You’ll read a variety of books, engage in fascinating discussions and enjoy good Christian fellowship. Discussions are held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. Coffee will be on and members take turns bringing treats. The book to be discussed on September 17 is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. The novel is told in the first person by Theodore Decker who, at the age of 13, survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum in which his beloved mother dies. Staggering out through the debris, he takes with him the world-famous painting of “The Goldfinch.” This unique object of beauty sustains him through many trials as he descends from that first theft into other crimes, including years later killing a gangster in self-defense. From that pit, he gradually climbs by returning the picture (for a huge reward) and trying to reconcile with the people he has wronged. The book scheduled to be read in October is The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. You may contact Barb Anderson at [email protected] with questions or for more information.

Pastor’s Evening Bible Study

Pastor’s evening Bible study begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 15

Gathering Area. Bible study books are available in the church office. Questions can be directed to Paul Anderson @ 282-7213 or [email protected].

New members are always welcome and if you can only attend once a month or once a year you are welcome. Our first gathering of the year is Friday, September 9

Prayer Shawls—September 12 and 23 Beginning in September, the Prayer Shawl team meets twice a month, once in the evening and once during the

day. Meetings are on the 2nd

Monday at 6:30 pm and on the 4

th Friday at 1:00 pm. If you

like to knit or crotchet or would like to learn, you may join this caring ministry at any time. Contact Carolyn Dahl at [email protected] with questions. Members may also stop by the office to pick up a prayer shawl for a family member or friend in need of prayer and comfort.

Hosanna’s Pantry—September 23 & 24 Join Hosanna’s Pantry team this fall. It’s a

great way to share God’s love with families in need and work together as a family. Children as young as 5 are invited to help with their parents. The first fall pantry opening will be Saturday, September 24 from 9:00 – 11:30 am.

Setup is Friday, September 23 at 10:00 am. There’s something for all ages to do. You can help with the pantry set up on Friday. Or you can help greet families, help them shop, carry out groceries or clean up on Saturday morning. There’s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson, at [email protected] or 507-951-6848 with questions.

Quilters Group—September 15 Hosanna’s quilters meet on the 3

rd Thursday

of the month from 9:00 am—2:00 pm. Coffee and treats are served in the morning and everyone brings their own lunch. You don’t have to be an experienced quilter to participate. Quilts are pieced and sewn and tied together. They are given to families in need locally and around the world through Lutheran World Relief. Please contact either Darlene Brandt ([email protected]) or Sharon Dunford ([email protected]) with questions.

Pastor’s Discretionary Fund and Sharing and Caring Pantry

Both our Pastor’s Discretionary Fund and small Sharing and Caring Food Pantry are ways that Hosanna helps families in the community that are struggling to make ends meet. Through your noisy offering (coin) donations on Sundays or checks written to the discretionary fund, Pastor Meiers is able to help families with a gas card. When the small food pantry is full of food, a family in need who comes to Hosanna can go back home with a bag or two of groceries. Please consider a donation to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund or bring an extra bag of groceries to Hosanna when you’re out shopping. (Consider items that can be opened by hand and don’t require cooking. Some people are living in their cars.) Your ongoing generosity has helped hundreds of families. Thank you!

Hosanna’s Adopt A Highway Are you out of shape? Need some exercise? If so, I have a solution. You can help clean Hosanna’s section of Highway 52 east of Apache mall. The walking, bending, and lifting will improve your fitness level. The next cleanup day is

Sunday, September 11th at 12:15 pm as part of

God’s work. Our hands. Sunday. We will be done by 1:00 pm or maybe before. There is a signup sheet in the gathering area or contact P a u l A n d e r s o n @ 2 8 2 - 7 2 1 3 o r [email protected].

Music for Summer Worship Services This summer, in addition to our organists, musical pieces have been performed during our worship services by the high school graduates and their families, a men’s and a women’s vocal group, VBS children, the Grace Team, a mixed quartet, three soloists (a child, a woman and a man), a flutist and a marimba player. Thank you to all of those who provided this wonderful variety of musical enhancements to our worship services.

Hosanna Choir for High School Students– Adults

The 4-part mixed choir for grades 9—adults will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30pm. On other Wednesdays the choir will practice at 7:00pm. Singers of all skill levels are welcome. Even if you have never sung in a choir you are encouraged to come and learn from those who have experience. It is a great opportunity for high school students to mix with adults in a relaxed atmosphere, joining together in songs of faith. If your schedule does not allow you to participate the entire year, you are still welcome to come when you can. As a part of this choir, you will share inspirational anthems and lead congregational songs. Contact the director, Nancy Wales (507-285-0092; [email protected]) if you have questions.

New Piano Cover A black, full length piano cover was purchased for Hosanna’s Wurlitzer grand piano in the sanctuary. The cover will protect the piano plus the full length will assist the Damppchaser Humidity Control System in keeping the humidity level underneath the piano more stable. The new cover provides a professional look compared to the temporary various long cloths that were previously used. The piano cover was purchased with memorial donations that were given over several years time to the music ministry department under Worship in

Designated Gifts. The music ministry teams are thankful for these donations which were given in memory of people’s loved ones. It is hoped that the new

cover will help maintain the beauty of the appearance of the piano and of its sound for many years.

Exodus Band Hosanna’s instrumental group that plays Christian pop/jazz music will begin rehearsing on September 7 at 7:00 pm. I am always looking for people who would like to participate. Anyone that has two years of experience playing an instrument is welcome to join. If anyone has questions, please contact me at 507-358-4297 or [email protected].

Scott Strand, director

Praise! Handchimes for All Ages Praise! handchimes is an intergenerational music group which welcomes people ages 8-80 years old. This would be a fun experience for individuals, couples and/or families. No musical experience is needed, just a willingness to learn. Those with some experience are welcome to come and be leaders. Each person only needs to keep track of one or two notes. You can do this! Currently, Praise! is scheduled to meet each Wednesday from 5:15-5:45 pm. Contact Cynthia McLaren, Handbell Director, ([email protected]) or Nancy Wales ([email protected]) if you plan to participate and can come at 5:15 pm on Wednesdays. If you cannot come at this time, still contact us so we know you are interested. A minimum of six ringers is needed in order for this group to proceed. Don’t miss out!

King’s Ringers Handbells King’s Ringers, the more advanced handbell choir, will continue to play challenging music so experience is helpful. The beauty of the sound of the bells provides another way to praise God, lifting our souls heavenward. They will meet each Wednesday from 5:45-6:30pm starting on September 7. This group plays during worship services about once a month. If you have questions or plan to participate, contact Cynthia McLaren, Handbell Director ([email protected]). Help us make use of all the handbells that we own!

Choirchimes Have Arrived

A 3-octave set of Choirchimes (hand chimes) by Malmark has arrived. These Choirchimes will be used by the handbell groups to provide

a different type of sound. Also, the plan is to use these chimes with other groups of a variety of ages in different settings. The hand chimes are

simpler to use and easier to transport than handbells. Donations, memorials and funds from four different sources were used to purchase this 3-octave set. Three of these sources were under Designated Gifts: Instrumental Music Ministry, Vocal Music Ministry, and Memorials under Support. The fourth source was the Hand Chime line item under Worship in the general budget. We are grateful for these donations and memorials that people have given throughout the years.

September 4 – No Forum Labor Day Weekend Coffee and donuts will be served following the 9:00 am worship in the Gathering Area.

September 11 – God’s work. Our hands. You are encouraged to participate in the many service opportunities following the 9:00 am worship. Please sign-up on the registration sheets located at the information desk in the Gathering Area.

Hello, Fall is a busy time of year. Students along with parents are excited for the start of a new school year. There are many new transitions and exciting opportunities as students look forward to their next grade level whether it be kindergarten or the start of their college education. Terri and I recently moved Alexa to Wheat Ridge, Colorado where she is preparing for graduate

school. It feels a lot different having her so far away now. No more quick trips to St. Cloud for short visits. But she is focused and has a plan and we know God will guide and protect her every step of the way. A prayer that God will bless and watch over all students, teachers, and families. May God’s infinite love grant them strength to learn and keep them safe no matter the distance. Good luck to all students in their new adventures. Sunday school is just around the corner please consider teaching or maybe becoming a part of the Sunday School leadership team. If you are interested please contact Darcy Youngstrom, our Faith Formation Director, or any member of the Sunday School team. President Ray Ashworth

Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, A refugee, overwhelmed by becoming a naturalized American citizen, might well ask us, “Do you really love your country? You pay your taxes and obey its laws, but are you truly grateful for belonging to this wonderful nation?” We might ask ourselves the same question as we nestle in the greatness

and goodness of God. We confess our faith, we belong to our church, we give it our support. But is this enough? The Pharisees in Jesus’ day observed all of the correct religious disciplines. But this was not enough. Using the words from Isaiah, Jesus said, “… their heart is far from me.” God bids for our hearts through the Gospels, in the incredible biblical story of the Creator’s love. In love we were created to be like God’s children; in love God sent Jesus to die in order that we might be forgiven and reclaimed; in love God assures us of an eternal home. Could we love God had we not been loved first? In a profound sense, as we give ourselves to the Holy One we are confessing that God has already captured our hearts. That we can love and come to the Sustainer at all is a miracle of God’s spirit. The familiar hymn says it well: Yet I may love thee, too, O Lord, Almighty as thou art, For thou hast stopped to ask of me The love of my poor heart. Our congregational mission statement provides a clear understanding of how we as God’s people respond to the love first shown us. “As a Christian Family of Faith, we are gathered to grow and sent to serve.” We are gathered as the people of God for worship, study and fellowship, we are then sent to serve in Christ’s name in the world. Our fall worship emphasis will highlight our call to be disciples of Jesus active in service to the neighbor: September: Sent to Serve in Our Community October: Sent to Serve with Our Time November: Sent to Serve with Our Treasure December: Sent to serve with Our Talents May we gather regularly to hear the saving word of the gospel and receive Christ’s sacraments to be empowered to share that saving word in speech and action.
