Barb Anderson receiving a blessing from the Sunday
School children at her retirement party
Thank you to all the Sunday School staff, the Hosanna staff, members and friends who helped with my retirement party. It was so much fun for me to celebrate with everyone! And thank you for the many cards and gifts I received. Hosanna is a unique and gifted congregation and it has been a privilege to work here! Though I’ll miss working with our dedicated staff, I’ll look forward to being at Hosanna as just a member and volunteer.
God’s blessings for a wonderful summer! ~ Barb

” End of the Year Confirmation Fun
Nature Is Calling
Can we go outside more?
Maybe we could stand more than we sit...
Maybe change the sessions a bit so that we could be outside more….
I think we should go outside when it is warm…..
With the weather finally warming up, it is of no surprise that the above responses were
some of the written feedback provided by our Confirmation youth when evaluating their
past year together in the Confirmation setting. Not only did the beautiful weather of this
particular night prompt a general response of more time outside, but it is also known that
many youth connect with God most, in nature.
So while the above comments may appear to be statements of just wanting some fresh air,
or to move around, they may actually be providing us information as to how to share/
engage God with our youth – in nature.
As we continue to prepare and plan for the future, we will look at ways God connects with
teens and how teens identify God in their life. This will require additional opportunities for
youth to explore faith in new settings. It will require an environment for youth to openly
share personally with one another their daily interactions and questions about their faith,
and also opportunities to engage with others around them (ie. adult mentors).

The Sunday School Team would like to thank all
our Sunday School teachers for their hard work

Hosanna’s children and their families for sharing

Memorial Garden News
As you read this article
Memorial Day, a day to
reflect and remember the
people who died while
serving in the country’s
armed forces, has come and
gone. Many of us used this
time to honor our loved ones
that have passed before us.
We visit cemeteries, place
flowers on the graves, tell
stories and reflect. Did you
know Hosanna has a place to do this right out the door on the east side of the building? The
Memorial Garden is a special place, open to all on a daily basis to reflect and celebrate life.
Please come, use this space, it is a gift for you.
With gratitude we thank those who have made a gift to this ministry. It has allowed us to
purchase annuals, perennials, supplies as we are not funded by Hosanna's budget. In
addition we thank the Thrivent Action Team for the grant of $250. This generous gift will be
used this 2015 season to purchase plant materials. And of course we thank all the volunteers
that spend countless hours caring for this space.
Lastly, I would like to invite members to consider joining this ministry team which meets
weekly from late spring to early fall. Each person’s involvement is varied and each brings a
special skill set to the team. We are looking for someone to lead the group, which will be
supported by the team. See your weekly bulletin for and website for hours and more
information. Please contact Becky Grant at [email protected] with questions.

Greetings everyone, May has been a busy month at Hosanna as usual.
The Lift High The Cross capital appeal had its first collection of initial gifts
and pledge cards. With the second collection set for the end of May. We
remain hopeful that we will be in position to begin the cross tower in the near
future. As previously stated, we are not taking out a loan to meet the capital
appeal objectives, so we need your pledges. The Council will review the total
amount received at next month’s meeting to determine if we can start the
cross tower.
It was nice to see the creation station back for a Sunday this past month. The more ways we
engage our youth the better, plus it gives us an easy way to interact with the youth. Now I just
need to remember to ask them “What did you create today?”. One of the things I liked about my
church growing up was that you knew everybody, including the adults. I believe keeping those
intergenerational communication lines open is important.
Moving from youth to the other end of the spectrum, it looks like the quilters have been busy.
Quilts were on the pews last Sunday. These quilts go all over the world to those in need. It would
not surprise me if some of these went to Nepal as they continue to recover from the earthquake
they had last month. My grandmother was a quilter, so I enjoy seeing them draped over the
pews. I don’t think I will ever look at a quilt and not think of her, that’s a good thing.
I would like to bring attention to two of our members:
A special thanks Carol Strand who directed the handbell choir for over 20 years. Thank
you for your dedication and all the great music. Cynthia McLaren will lead the handbell
choir next year.
Barb Anderson retires from her church secretary position at the end of May. She has been
in this position for almost 10 years. She has gone above and beyond the responsibilities
of the position and will be greatly missed. I wish her well in her retirement, she’s earned it.
Finally, I’d like to welcome to our new Administrative Assistant, Liz Coltom, who was hired at the
end of May!
God Bless,
Jim Hansen
I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Elizabeth Coltom
and I go by Liz. I am married to my husband of 7 years,
Jason. We have 5 cats and live in Rochester. I grew up in
Stewartville, and Jason is from Thief River Falls
(Strathcona, MN).
I worked for Charter Communications as a Billing
Supervisor and for the Girl Scouts as an Administrative
Assistant in the office and then during the summer as a
Day Camp Counselor/Camp Director at Edith Mayo Day camp in Rochester.
I am a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and volunteer with the local chapter of
a renaissance recreation group, the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA.org).
Other hobbies include lampworking (glass beads), silk banners and fencing. I
also enjoy computer games and the outdoors.
I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone at Hosanna! ~ Liz

Dear members and Friends of Hosanna,
Thank you for the generous outpouring of compassion and support at this
difficult time of loss in our family. Your prayers, cards, calls, gifts of food and
memorials are a great comfort. Sonja’s brother, Al Boyum, lost his 16 month
battle with cancer on May 12.
He and his wife, Jean, had been staying with us for the majority of the past
year as he underwent treatment at the Mayo Clinic for Multiple Myeloma.
Your thoughts and prayers for Al and his family were deeply appreciated.
In the last week that Al and Jean were at our home, Al pulled me aside and asked if I would help
conduct his funeral service. Little did I know that two weeks later his request would be fulfilled. I
preached on John 11:21-27, 32-34 which is the account of the raising of Lazarus. When Lazarus’
sister, Martha, speaks to Jesus about the resurrection, Jesus makes clear the fact of his triumph
over death when he states,
“I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and
everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”
What tremendous words of assurance and comfort our Lord gives us even in the stark reality of
death. Al and Jean’s church, Eagle Lake Lutheran, was such a great support for the family and the
community. We are blest as members of our congregations to have the loving embrace of the
people of God to hold us in our most vulnerable moments. Over 700 people attended the funeral
service and visitation which is a tribute to Al’s service to his community. Having loving family and
friends, and his love for Christ was manifest in his involvement in the life of his church. He
understood and lived the life of Christian service.
Following funeral worship on May 16, family and friends gathered at Al and Jean’s dairy farm
which is adjacent to their church. Despite a persistent rain, the crowd who had gathered in the
farm house stepped out into the front yard to view a most amazing sight. A glorious rainbow
arched from the fields, over the farm and ended at the church. God’s most visible sign of promise
and life only served to reinforce the words of hope we had heard from St. John’s gospel earlier that
day.
May the promise of the resurrection continue to give us all hope and strength even in the face of
death. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers
