ION Mission Statements

• ION Mission– The Institute of Navigation is the world's premier non-profit

professional society dedicated to the advancement of the art and science of positioning, navigation and timing (PNT)

• RMS Mission– The purpose of the Rocky Mountain Section (which may

hereafter be referred to as the “Section”) is to promote the aims of the Institute by providing a local forum for discussion of topics from the field of navigation and encouraging participation, fellowship, and camaraderie among Rocky Mountain area members

RMS ION Goals

• Establish RMS as the premier regional ION chapter in existence

• Maintain existing level of activity with regards to quarterly meetings and speakers

• Extend RMS efforts on community outreach• Increase RMS membership by 10% over 2011

Current Status

• Organizational Efforts – New Officer Corps– New processes and programs

• Membership– 72 members of 1700+ National (~4%)

• Budget– $685.52 existing budget– $800 stipend from national– $1000 sponsorship from Lockheed Martin

• Future Section Meetings– Ideas for topics of interest welcome

New Processes & Programs• Marketing / Fundraising

– We have the latitude to raise our own funds– Created and documented a fundraising process for the section

• Community Outreach– Creation of Academic Achievement in Navigation Program (AANP)

• Targets Local middle and high school students– Engagement with local colleges

• ION RMS Scholarship Program• Exploring other opportunities for involvement

– Local Outreach• Boy Scouts

– Orienteering Day• Geocaching

– Dedicated RMS geocache in local area

Colorado MUC Status

• Colorado being considered as a location for the 2012 MUC competition– Requires $40k in funds– Dr. William Crisler will potentially provide $40k in NDEP

funds• High probability• Decision currently held due to Congress budget shenanigans

– Alternate funding will entail RMS ION interaction with local military directorates (STEM grants)

• National ION has requested our participation to volunteer hours and mentoring

Fundraising• We have latitude to raise our own funds– Donations should process through National

• Generate letter request to all small, medium, and large businesses associated with GPS

• Donor program– Platinum ($2000), Gold ($1,000), Silver ($500), and Bronze

($100)– Recognition at events and on website– Option to fund an event?

• Request quarterly meeting and event sponsorship from local establishments

Academic Program

• Title: Academic Achievement in Navigation– Basically a research paper competition

• Middle and High School students eligible– Initially target District 20 Middle Schools (8)– As funds permit, target high school and other

districts• Prizes– Best in School: $25 and a tour of 2SOPS– Best in District: $100 to student; $500 to school
