The Visa Application ProcessYou should bring the following items to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate* when applying for your student visa:

1. A SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) I-20 (or DS-2019 for exchange visitors) “Certificate of Eligibility”2. A receipt stating you have paid the I-901 ‘SEVIS’ fee (see below)3. A complete non-immigrant visa application form (DS-156) or complete the electronic form (DS-160). Be certain to verify which form that particular

Consulate or Embassy accepts. This information and the form(s) are free and available from the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website. 4. Letter of admission from Lawrence University, and a copy of the 2015–16 International Student Enrollment Confirmation, which includes

information about your financial aid award.5. Evidence of means of financial support for at least the first year of study in the U.S. You should bring both originals and copies of all

relevant financial documents.6. Originals of your secondary school (and university, if applicable) records and examination results7. Originals of your SAT and/or TOEFL results8. One recent photograph, 3 cm by 3 cm9. A passport valid for at least six months after your proposed date of entry into the United States

*Canadian citizens entering the U.S. from Canada do not need to obtain a student visa from the Embassy or Consulate. Visas are approved at the U.S./Canada border upon entry into the U.S. Students should bring all forms with them for approval by border officials. Students are still required to pay the I-901 ‘SEVIS’ fee.

Paying the I-901 ‘SEVIS’ FeeAll students applying for F-1 or J-1 U.S. student visas must pay a nonrefundable I-901 ‘SEVIS’ fee before visiting the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to apply for a visa. The I-901 fee is $200 for F1 visa applicants and $180 for J1 visa applicants. Two different options are available to pay this fee.

Credit Card Payment (recommended option)Go to fmjfee.com/i901fee. Have your I-20 or DS-2019 available; you will need information from this form. Fill out Form I-901 online, enter the credit card information and submit the form electronically. Print at least two receipts. Take one to your visa appointment and save the other for your arrival in the United States. Please note that the credit card option is not available to citizens of all countries. Check the website for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your native country to figure out alternative payment options. Western Union Payment (alternative option) If Western Union is available in your country, you may use these offices to pay the SEVIS fee using Western Union’s “Quick Pay.” Western Union is allowed to collect the SEVIS fee in local currency and transmit the payment and data to the U.S. government. Once you have visited Western Union and paid the fee, you will have access to your payment confirmation, which you should take with you to your visa appointment. Make a copy of your receipt and save it for your arrival in the United States. Visit ice.gov/sevis/i901/index.htm for detailed instructions on this process.
