USHERS NEEDED

This past week everyone learned of the decision to close OurLady of Magnificat School in Kinnelon. Since this decision

was unexpected, the families whose children were affected arescrambling to seek out a new catholic school in which to enroll theirchildren. Many came to St. Mary’s to check out our facilities and toget a sense of our mission, our stability and if we would be a good“fit” for their child. The conversations I had with these parents asour paths crossed made me more aware of what a special parish wehave and how blessed we are. One parent asked me if I could choosethree words that would describe St. Mary’s, what would they be? Itwas an interesting question. My three words were: Franciscan,Welcoming, Inclusive.

The next morning at our 7:30 daily mass in church, Br. Frank gave ahomily that I think captured St. Mary’s spirit and I asked him for acopy. Br. Frank has only been with us now for about six weeks, butas you read this homily, you can see he has a sense of who we are asa parish. Here it is—without the “Irish brogue!”

“Who is invited to our table?” In many Franciscan parishes, themotto is, “All are welcome.” I do love it and it says much about whowe are as Franciscans in our life and ministry. When I had therestaurant before entering the Friars, we had a lot of snow the finalyear—about 21 feet—and it always seemed to fall on a Friday orSaturday. I totally believe one needs to take advantage of a situa-tion when it arises. Sending the employees home, I would call peopleto see if they would like to come for dinner at my house. I didn’tknow who would show up. Packing up some of the food from therestaurant and waiting was wonderful.

“The snowsuits eventually materialized and I usually had eight toten people. We would sit around with the fireplace blazing and ablizzard outside for a full and fun evening. It was wonderful becauseof the spontaneity. Many of these people would not have invitedeach other for dinner, so it all made for interesting conversation.

“Last week we had a cooking class with nine kids from AdolescentFaith Formation who volunteered their time preparing dinner forfifty women and children from one of the shelters. It was a life-giving and graced experience for me and, hopefully, for the youthinvolved. In preparing the food, they sat at table with these familieswho were hurting and living in fear—families with whom their pathsordinarily would never have crossed.

“The people we invite to our table, our Eucharist, says much aboutwho we are as Catholic Christians. Do we look to the laws of theChurch first to determine who we invite or do we look to the people, into their hearts. So many laws build around exclusion and toinclude anyone different would only ostracize ourselves within thecommunity. We would be seen as being guilty by association. InJesus’ time, tax collectors were very much despised. They fleecedthe government and the people and amassed fortunes for them-selves. When Jesus called Matthew, he called a man whom every-one hated. The power of Jesus to see in another not only who hewas but also what he could become is quite evident. No one had

ever had such faith in the possibilities of the human heart as Jesushad. Jesus was not concerned with his own holiness but with theconversion of the other. Others were more concerned with them-selves than with helping another. Others were more concerned withcriticism than with encouragement, acknowledging the faults ofothers while overriding their own. Others practiced a goodnesswhich took the guise of condemnation rather than forgiveness andempathy. They would rather leave a man in the gutter than give hima hand to get out of it. Others were more concerned with orthodoxythan in practical help.

“Jesus continually stressed in his ministry the desire for mercy andnot sacrifice. We may go through all the motions of orthodoxy, butif our hand is never stretched out to help another in need, we are notliving our faith. In welcoming and embracing the other, we echo thewords of not only Jesus but also the example of St. Francis inpreaching through our actions and kindness towards others. Wordswill come later.

“The call to be authentic Christians is never an easy one, but it isone that is life-giving. The challenge to open up our lives to thestranger, the poor, the outsider is greater now than ever. Theblizzards of our own lives call us to a place of communion withanother within our hearts and in the lives of others. Communion is aplace where we can embrace and love the other. We are continuallychallenged to move beyond our own limitations as a Church and apeople of faith in acceptance, love and grace, always being guidedby the Holy Spirit.

“My friends, the question remains, ‘Who do we invite to ourtable?’”

Ministry News

What’s needed this week? We seem to go throughphases. I remember last year that my predecessor,Ed Parker, had a tough time getting enough cannedcarrots - lately it seems that peanut butter & jellyare constantly running out. Also, items that weoften buy are coffee and paper towels.

Food Pantry—Who can enroll and get food from us?

As a member of the Community Food Bank and as a recognized (bythe I.R.S.) charitable organization, St. Mary’s Food Pantry is opento people of all ages, faiths, genders and ethnicities. The maincriteria is that the person or family needs food.

In addition, the families should live within our “service area” (PomptonLakes, Bloomingdale, Butler, Wanaque & Haskell and Oakland).Riverdale and Wayne used to be within our area, but now each ofthose towns has their own food pantry. Families should also showthat they meet the income eligibility guidelines supplied by TheEmergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) of NJ.

Being that our mission is to help feed the hungry, we always try tosend people home with food even if we can’t sign them up becausethey don’t meet certain criteria.

His Word Today

Daily Readings for the Week

Sunday Readings

First Reading: Deuteronomy 30:10-14—Moses petitionsthe people to follow the commandments God has set before them.He reminds them that the laws are not in the sky or far away at sea,but are accessible to them and meant to be followed if they wish toprosper.

Second Reading: Colossians 1:15-20—Paul discusses thedivine nature of Jesus, and explains that Jesus was created beforeanything else. Everything else was "created through him, and for him."

Gospel: Luke 10:25-37—While discussing everlasting life, alawyer mentions loving one's neighbor as oneself. The lawyer thenasks Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus tells him about a manbeaten by robbers, who was ignored by both a priest and a Levitebefore a Samaritan stopped and offered him aid. Jesus asks thelawyer who was neighbor to the injured man. The lawyer says "theone who treated him with compassion." Jesus encourages him togo and do the same.

Sunday: Dt 30:10-14; Col 1:15-20; Lk 10:25-37Monday: Is 1:10-17; Mt 10:34-11:1

Tuesday: Is 7:1-9; Mt 11:20-24Wednesday: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16; Mt 11:25-27Thursday: Is 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Mt 11:28-30

Friday: Is 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; Mt 12:1-8Saturday: Mi 2:1-5; Mt 12:14-21

A Fresh Perspective on the Sunday Readings by Rev. Wm. J. ReillyThere was a scholar of the law who stood up to test him and said,‘Teacher what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Jesus said to him,‘What is written in the law? How do you read it?’ He said in reply,‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with allyour being and with all your strength and with all your mind andyour neighbor as yourself.’ He replied to him, ‘You have answeredcorrectly; do this and you will live.’... ‘And who is my neighbor?’

Jesus the story teller portrayed the great message of the goodSamaritan. We know of the figures of the man, the robbers, thepriest, the Levite and the Samaritan. Each one, like the scholar whoasked the question, was able to justify themselves. One had thecourage to put the word of God into practice.

The person who asked the question already knew the biblical answer, but he was quite far from practicing it. The alien, the foreigner, thedespised one, responded with the expression of love of God in all itsaspects.

The law of the first testament of love of God and neighbor is like thecoin in your pocket. It has two sides. Think of heads as love of Godand tails as that love expressing our concern for the Christ in need.Paul tells us today that “Christ Jesus is the image of the invisibleGod...” He became human to show us His face, not just in Palestinetwenty centuries ago, but in those worthy of His love among us.

Reading the story of the Good Samaritan Jesus asks me too “Howdo you read it?”
