This is an advert for Jessie J’s album ‘who you are’ which was released in February 2011, with a record label of Lava Records and Universal Music GmbH The dominating colour of this advert is black. This goes against the typical conventions of pop music genre. By using this colour, it presents the artist in a bold, dominating and controlling way. Black has connotations of danger; suggesting that the artist is something to look out for, or perhaps a threat. The colour creates a gothic tone which could suggest that her music has elements of different genres throughout, which may attract a wider audience and makes her music more widespread. Through the ‘Uses and gratifications model’ by Denis McQuail, it may suggest that people may buy the album because they are able to identify with the artist and compare themselves to the style that the artist portrays. The second colour used on this advert is gold. This creates the impression of wealth, but also creates a typical ‘urban’ and ‘sophisticated’ look. This colour could reinforce the importance and superiority of the new album; suggesting it is like no other. It also emphasises her look in society as being popular The text is presented centrally aligned in a font which looks handwritten, or perhaps a ‘bling’ necklace . This is similar to the Katy Perry advert, and adds a personal tone to the advert; addressing the audience personally. This suggests that this is a typical convention of pop music. The font however looks metallic, and is bold and dominating which creates the impression of power, and perhaps danger. This is not usually a convention of pop music, which suggests it could be another way to indicate that she has elements of other genres within her music; such as hip hop. The image used is a medium close up of the artist with a direct eye-line to the audience. This makes the audience feel personally targeted/addressed. Her expression appears to be fierce/aggressive which creates the impression that she is perhaps a threat because it looks like she is shouting. In addition to this, her hands are up, revealing her long, claw like nails which may create offence. This breaks the stereotypes of women in the pop genre, and presents her in a powerful way. This could be a way of reinforcing ‘girl power’ (suggested by David Gauntlett)and The image for the advert has been taken in a white studio, which makes the artist stand out. These contrasting colours could indicate two opposing sides to her personality, suggesting that she is ‘sweet and innocent’ but also ‘boisterous and gothic’. This may a way of widening the audience, even though the mass audience would be expecting to see an apposing image to this advert, due to the genre of pop.

Similarly to the Katy Perry advert, this advert has included the names of the chart songs included within the album. This is capitalised to highlight its importance and would help to persuade the mass audience to buy the album because of the recognisable single ‘Price Tag’. In addition to this, the artist B.O.B in introduced, which adds another genre of ‘rap’ to be advertised. This may create more entry points as the audience would expand, because fans of both artists may want to purchase the album. Just like Katy Perry’s advert, a website address gives the audience the chance to find out more about the album. This is an effective way of reaching the audience through cross promotion. By including the web-address, it may lead to the multi step flow theory, as due to links with social media, fans are able to ‘like’ and ‘share’ the page which widens the audience for the album.

The record labels of the Artist are presented at the bottom of the text, to reinforce the large institution that the artist is signed to. People may be fans of the record label, and may feel inspired to buy Jessies’ album and listen to her music.

The clothing of the artist is all black, which again contributes to the idea that she is dominating and unique, but her clothing is lacy, which could suggest a ‘male gaze’ stated by Laura Mulvey, and presents her as perhaps being focused on image. On her black lipstick, there is a gold design. This adds to the sense of having an ‘urban’ image as it looks like graffiti, and it is perhaps a motif for the record label because she has had things drawn on her lips previously.

The dominating image displayed goes against the songs that are on her album.

This magazine advert has a synergistic link to the music video to ‘price tag’ , because the advert looks similar to the music video; She is wearing the same costume, which may be recognisable, and may suggest that the audience may see the artist as an idol , and as being ‘fashionable’.

The lighting on this advert is high key, in contrast to the rebellious, harsh colours that are used. This reflects the conventions of the genre because it creates a light hearted tone, which could reinforce the engagement and enjoyment that the audience when listening to her music.

This advert portrays Nicki Minaj as a stereotypical ‘girly girl’ .The colour scheme creates a sense of beauty and perfection, through colours which usually connote innocence and calmness, which is in contrast to her motif of being ‘cheeky’ and ‘outgoing’. The blue also creates an atmosphere that look like the sky, which adds a ‘natural’ image to the artist, which may be showing an opposing side to her personality; that the audience do not usually see. In addition to this created atmosphere, at the top, right aligned, there is a pink cloud which looks like candyfloss. This creates the idea that her album is different to everyone else's, suggesting it is ‘magical’ or like a ‘dream’. This also draws on the idea of her being ‘sweet’, however this does not follow the conventions of her typical music genre of ‘pop’ and ‘rap’. Usually her image is focused around bright colours and outgoing costumes.

The text used on this advert looks to be handwritten, which links to the title of the album being called ‘the pinkprint’. This adds a personal touch to the advert which addresses the mass audience personally. In addition to this, it is effective how the glitter, centrally aligned, links to the title of the album, and it reinforces a ‘homemade’ tone to the album. This suggests that she has helped to produce the album, which may be a selling point of the album.

Also, by having the glitter, it reinforces the genre of the music as pop music is usually focused around image, and by having glitter, it connotes beauty and glamour. It also creates an energetic and ‘party’ atmosphere which creates an exciting vibe for the audience and anticipates the arrival of her new album. This also represents part of her image, which creates a motif for the record label as being ‘fun’ and ‘glamorous’. The pink glitter may also create a sense of ‘girl power’ because pink is a stereotypically girly colour, and because it is dominating on the advert, it may inspire girls to follow Nicki Minaj and see her as an idol because she has a sense of power.

The shot is an extreme long shot which creates the impression that the advert is artwork on a wall; which contributes to the context of the album name ‘pink print’. The shot reveals Nicki Minaj’s image which gives the impression that she is ‘proud’ or ‘showing off’ her artwork. This gives the artist a sense of pride and achievement, perhaps for the album. Her posture looks seductive, as she is posing with her hand on her hip. This enhances her typically ‘attractive’ image and body which suggests that she is confident; which is a quality that many young teenaged girls wish to have. However, her image contributes to the idea of having a ‘male gaze’ as Laura Mulvey would suggest, because her provocative clothing is revealing and symbolises her body as being a sexual object. This therefore reflects her album as perhaps having a secondary target audience of men, because they may find looking at this advert visually pleasing.

The advert makes reference to her music video for ‘pills and potions’, where she wears a white clothing also. This therefore creates a link in her synergistic products, which may make the artist recognisable.

Even though the shot is an extreme long shot, the facial expressions of the artist is clearly defined due to her makeup. She is wearing excessive makeup, which portrays her as perhaps wanting to make a statement, and reinforces the genre of the album because the majority of female pop artists are portrayed as being girly and sophisticated. Her facial image (including wearing false eye lashes) is a motif for the artist, including parts of her body that are known as ‘unique’, and is used throughout many of her synergistic products, to create a recognisable image for the artist. The white clothing of the protagonist connotes innocence, which goes against her boisterous, emphasised personality, suggesting that she has different sides to her personality. This may attract different types of people into buying her album. It could also imply that there are different themes that run throughout the album within her songs.

The Date of the album is presented in a white bold font which stands out from the rest of the image to highlight its importance. On this advert, opposing to the Katy Perry and Jessie J adverts, it does not include information about the album. This could suggests that the advert is aimed towards fans rather than a ‘mass audience’ because they are more likely to understand the semantic meaning behind the poster. This could have been through social media for example, which relies on the audience to understand what the advert is advertising.

Her image creates a sense of ‘rebellion’ and ‘mischief’ because a dominating and sophisticated look is reinforced through her body art and large jewellery. This reinforces her style of music, and follows the conventions of rap music, as well as pop music. It also represents the artist as being a style icon, and using the ‘Uses and Gratification model’ people may feel inspired to copy her individual style.

This advert contributes to the typical conventions of music videos, by using pastel and bold colours, which would attract a female primary target audience. However, it goes against Nicki's typical style. This may suggest that her album is different to her previous albums, which may motivate the audience to buy it and see for themselves.

By having the finger print on the advert, it brings the audience closer to the artist because it reveals her identity, which is usually secretive; this therefore makes the audience feel like they know personal things about the artist, which may cause them to feel self actualised. The thumb print looks to be done with makeup, which suggests that one of the themes that runs through the album is ‘image’. Or it may be reflecting that she likes to make a statement

The same pink print is used on her album cover, so by including it on the advert for the album, it follows the conventions of a recognisable symbol. The audience are able to see the link between the synergistic products, because the album cover is unique and easy to spot. The advert reinforces the visual image on the album to ensure people know what to look for.

What is interesting about this advert in comparison to Jessie J and Katy Perry is that the shot type is completely different. It could suggest a different relationship between the audience and the artists; for Nicki, the audience may see her as an idol, rather than someone they can relate to.
