Visual processingOne of the Qualcomm 820’s major focuses is its visual processing chops. When combined with Qualcomm’s Adreno 530 GPU and the Qualcomm Kryo CPU, the new chip makes incredibly detailed photorealistic video graphics. For example, the image above isn’t a picture, it’s video rendering. This level of visual quality could make the 820 processor ideal for immersive experience like virtual reality.

The 820 uses Qualcomm’s Zeroth neural processing platform to automatically analyze and classify recognizable image categories (in this case, cats). The platform is a type of deep learning technology that allows the processor to learn new categories of images as more pictures are taken. The processor can then automatically arrange images into categorizes within a photos app.

Qualcomm’s new processor is built to improve images in low-light conditions, by using adaptive brightness. The company says the 820’s Low Light Vision (LLV) system compensates for high dynamic range (HDR) scenes and motion artifacts, which will reduce visual noise in the image. Simply put, it will make low light images look brighter and more clear.

Qualcomm says that audio is often an overlooked aspect of mobile devices, and the 820 sets out to change that. The company says that “there’s no need for headphones, a receiver, or external speakers to receive surround sound from your mobile device” with the 820. When listening to a mobile device with two front-facing speakers the company says music will sound like it’s coming from multi-channel headphones.

The 820 is the first commercially announced mobile processor to support LTE Category 12 download speeds of up to 600 Mbps, LTE Category 13 uplink speeds of up to 150 Mbps, and LTE in Unlicensed (LTE-U) for faster speeds. The modem also detects the best possible calling experience between Wi-Fi and LTE and switches back and forth based on how much congestion is on a Wi-Fi network and which source offers the best call quality.

The Adreno 530 graphics processor in the Snapdragon 820 is designed to both improve graphics performance and reduce power consumption by up to 40% (when compared to the previous-generation processor). Additionally, the Hexagon DSP (digital signal processor) can process certain tasks for the main CPU, computing some information faster and using less power.

Qualcomm built its first custom-designed 64-bit quad-core CPU for the 820. The result is a processor designed to reach speeds up to 2.2 GHz, with twice the performance and up to twice the power efficiency of the Snapdragon 810 processor.

Zeroth is Qualcomm’s first neural processing platform, which is designed to give devices with the 820 processor better visual perception, speech and audio recognition, and always-on awareness. The platform also allows Qualcomm’s Smart Protect security system to detect malware in real time, without needing processing power from the cloud.
