March 2015 has proved to be an exceptional month for the franchise team at Heritage Healthcare. Michelle Fenwick QFP & Amanda Jackson were invited to the HSBC Headquarters in Canary Wharf to meet the newly appointed UK Head of Franchising Andrew Brattesani. Michelle and Amanda were overwhelmed to see the Heritage Healthcare logo on a huge 12 screen advertising board and labelled as an iconic brand by HSBC.

The team of 4 Directors also attended the British and International Franchise Exhibition at Olympia in London and met lots of potential franchisees who were looking to achieve their dream of owning a homecare business. It was an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to display our business model, discuss our achievements in this thriving sector and see the passion and empathy they all had for helping people in their local communities.

Following our success at the Exhibition, we held our first Discovery Day in London on Thursday 9th April, for those who wanted to find out more about our franchise opportunity. We will be holding our next Discovery Day at our Head Office in Darlington later in the year to give more potential franchisees the opportunity to:

We also introduced our next two franchisees to our growing network this month. Mr Chris Batt will be starting his franchise in the Epping Forest & Districts area of London and Mr Mark Collier will be opening his franchise in the Trafford area of Manchester.

It was a delight to spend two weeks training Chris & Mark and their support staff at our Head Office in Darlington to use our superior systems and share with them all our knowledge and experience gained over many years.

Chris has also achieved his CQC Registration this month and is eager to begin supporting clients and recruiting staff in his local area in Epping. Chris also took the delivery of his first Heritage Healthcare branded vehicle which will be seen throughout Essex.

Chris said: My mother receives homecare, so I fully understand the importance of having a care company you can fully trust and count on. I’m really looking forward to providing an excellent home care service to the local community in Epping Forest and aim to improve the quality of life for both our clients and their families too .

Finance Manager, Lesley Coates MAAT has successfully passed the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Level 4 Diploma in Accounting qualification. By completing the distance learning qualification, Lesley is now a full member of the AAT.

The 15 month course comprised of six modules including: Financial Statements, Financial Performance, Budgeting, Internal Controls and Accounting Systems, Business Tax and Personal Tax.

Five modules were computer based exams and one module was project based. Lesley produced a written report as if she was an external consultant for the project.

Lesley said: The project was the most challenging part of the course to me as it involved a large amount of research and had very strict guidelines of how the report had to be written and laid out.”

The most enjoyable part of the course was the Business Tax and Personal Tax modules as the content of these modules were really interesting to me. I also really enjoyed financial equations and calculations.

I am now a full member of the Association of Accounting Technicians which means I have letters after my name. I feel very proud of my achievement as it has taken a great deal of hard work and dedication. It has been quiet stressful, especially as I studied in my own time. I can safely say I’m relieved it’s all over and I can get my life back!

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, oh hello everyone... ...yes it’s my birthday , I am now 2 years old today – the day I am writing this issue. I have had lots of cuddles and some presents to open. I got a really nice bag of biscuits, a new cuddly toy and a mat for my food bowls – a mat!!! , I didn’t really reckon much to that – it looks quite smart on the floor, but surely I could have had something else to play with, I can’t do much with a mat (don’t let mummy know, she will think I am ungrateful)!

What else have I been up to, well I have been a bit naughty recently. I have been running off in the fields, following lovely smells, and not coming back when called, so I have been put back on my long lead. I’m not on it all the time though, if I’m in the mood for chasing the ball, then mummy and daddy keep me off the lead, but if they think I am just out for a good mooch about then I get put back on. They say it is for my own good and that they don’t want me to get lost, and I know they are right because I don’t want to get lost either.

I managed to open my food cupboard the other day, and I was quite happily munching through some of my biscuits, when mummy heard the bags rattling. As a result the biscuits were moved and I was told not to go in the cupboard again – I’ll wait until she isn’t around to try again!

Rio, my sponsored guide dog is doing well and he is coming along with his training. Apparently, he has been going up and down in lifts for him to get used to, but apparently on the second occasion he wasn’t too happy because he didn’t get a cup of tea! I have never been given a cup of tea, if I have done something well. I will have to have words with my mummy and daddy.

We have only had a few photographs in of your pets, please don’t be shy – send them in to me. This is from Martine, the manager at Oakhouse, of her cat Oakie – very original naming, Martine – he looks quite inquisitive doesn’t he.

Well I think that this column is filled up for this edition. I will try to behave myself.

Wishing you all a very happy Spring, here’s hoping for some lovely sunshine.Lots of hugs

Harry PickersgillPs. Do you like my new photo?

Oakhouse Foods Demonstrator Nicola GoodwillOakhouse Foods are pleased to announce the appointment of Nicola Goodwill. Nicola will be travelling around the region and visiting sheltered accommodation, lunch clubs, healthcare professionals and charity groups to raise the profile and awareness of our superior frozen food delivery service.

Nicola recently visited Barleyfields retirement housing scheme in York. Residents sampled a range of Oakhouse Food products and were extremely impressed with the quality and taste of the food. So much so, seven residents placed an order.

In April, Nicola will be demonstrating to a team of Healthcare Professionals at James Cook hospital as part of a Stroke Training programme. They will learn about the nutritional benefits of Oakhouse meals, dietary requirements we cater for and have the opportunity to taste the food – so that they can recommend Oakhouse Foods to their patients who could benefit from our high quality, nutritious food and superior service.

If you would like Nicola to demonstrate our Oakhouse Foods products and services to a group which you are involved with, be it a charity group, lunch club, sheltered accommodation facility or a team of healthcare professionals, then Call Nicola TODAY on 01642 221112.

Alternatively, if you would like to have a look at our range of delicious meals then give us a call on 01642 221112 and we will send you a copy of the new Summer 2015 brochure in the post.

Registered Care Manager Sarah Dowell has completed a 12 month course in conjunction with the Independent Care Group and Dementia Care Matters this month.

The course involved looking at the day to day life of a person living with dementia and the meaning behind emotions and behaviour with the aim of developing person centred care plans.

Sarah said The course enabled me to review the reasons why and how I have the beliefs and values that I have, and how I enable those to be put into practice with the team I work within for the best interests of our clients.

It gave me an opportunity to review these with the staff team, so they could explore their own values & systems and how they deliver the best possible outcomes for people.

As a company we have ensured that our documentation is more person centred, outcome focused and aimed at incorporating the clients views and wishes at all times.

DISC Support Darlington’s Young Carers

Welcome Home Madeleine Donald

Dementia Training

DISC Darlington Young Carers service has been up and running since September 2013 and so far we have supported close to two hundred children and young people with caring responsibilities.

The aim of our service is to offer support to those aged up to 25 years of age, who live in Darlington and support a family member due to illness, disability, mental health issues, or who are affected by parental substance and/or alcohol misuse. Types of support provided to that family member by the Young Carer could include household tasks; financial management; personal care and giving medication; ensuring safety and being there for the person and worrying about them.

These responsibilities can have a substantial effect on the health and emotional well-being of children and young people so that is where we come in. Following referral and assessment of need support for the Young Carer and their family could include one-to-one and emotional support for themselves, respite activities (via organised groups and Carers Breaks funding), family support and advocacy.

If you already know or become aware of a child or young person you feel may benefit please get in contact with us on (01325) 483 038 and we will talk over the referral with you. DISC is an independent northern-based charity with 30 years’ experience supporting people around not just caring but substance misuse, mental health, housing and learning disabilities.

Client Madeleine Donald, 98, who is affectionately known as “The Boss” finally, came home after a period of illness and admissions into hospital and rehabilitation units for the last 6 weeks.

Madeleine is very excited to be home and is looking forward to getting back to her old self. Carer Jo Furmidge spent the first night back with Madeleine and presented her with some flowers, chocolates and a card from Heritage Healthcare York branch to say a big welcome home with all our love.

Carer Julie Connell who has visited Madeleine several times in hospital is very pleased to have her back, so we will be soon back to the old routine.

Left to right: Jo Pilling, Clare Park, Andrew Park and Nick Pilling

Marketing Executive, Andrew Park and his wife Clare were approached by friends to see if they would like to take part in a duathlon, which is basically a tri-athlon without the swimming.

Unaware the race was a national qualifying event with top athletes competing, they thought it would be a great idea and agreed to do it.

The team will be raising vital funds for St Teresa’s Hospice, a fantastic Darlington based charity, which helps the local community at the time of their greatest needs.

Gruelling training has commenced and the team of four recently met and trained together for the first time. They recently completed the testing 5km run, 20km bike ride followed by a further 2.5km run. Conditions were really tough as it was extremely windy but they all got through it unscathed and there was a great sense of achievement when they had finished.

Andrew said: It’s going to be a real challenge but we are very much looking forward to it. Clare and I regularly run but do very little cycling, whilst Nick and Jo cycle but don’t run very often. We hope to have great fun, do our very best in the race and raise funds for St Teresa’s Hospice.

Our Duathletes will be stepping up their training schedule with the race fast approaching (26th April). As well as having fun and raising money for St Teresa’s Hospice they have another objective in mind. And that is not to come last.

Show your support for St Teresa’s and back the underdogs... You can donate via our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/HeritageHealthcareDuathlon or text DAUT66 and an amount of £1, £2, £3, £4, £5, or £10 to 70070.
