By SUSANNAH ROBUCKSalutatorian, The HeritageSchool, Class of 2011

Welcome, everyone, to ourgraduation. I’m so glad all ofyou are here to celebrate withus. We’ve waited eighteen yearsfor this day, and it’s hard tobelieve that it is finally here. Inhonor of tonight, seniors, underyour chairs I have left yousomething. I would like for allof you to please put them on.Don’t you love sunglasses? Ithink everyone owns at leastone pair. I, myself, have 3 or 4pairs — one for my purse, onefor my car, and one for my poolbag. Sunglasses serve a greatpurpose. When the sun is toobright, we use them to protectour eyes.

We wear sunglasses for otherreasons as well. Some of uswear them as a fashion accesso-ry. We have different pairs to gowith different outfits. Some ofus wear them as a status sym-bol. You may have heard thephrase “I can’t find my Ray-Bans!” or “Where are myCostas?” In Italy I bought a pairof Dolce et Gabana’s. I was SOexcited. And of course, last fallon our senior trip toCumberland Island, I lost themwhen Stuart Bready threw mein the ocean. I pitched thebiggest fit! Sometimes we usesunglasses to hide our eyes —if we don’t have any makeupon, or if we haven’t gottenenough sleep. We use our sun-glasses so we won’t be recog-nized.

But these reasons are formsof deception. There is an oldproverb that states, “The eyesare the window to your soul.” Ibelieve this is very true. If youare always wearing your sun-glasses, no one can see youreyes. We can alter our physicalexpressions, appearances, andthe tones of our voices to hideourselves or deceive others, butwe cannot change our eyes.

There is so much you can tellabout a person if you can seetheir eyes. If someone looksaway when you walk by, itmight mean they’re shy. Ifsomeone raises their eyebrows, they are questioning what yousay. If they glare at you, theyare angry. If someone looksdown and can’t look you in theeye when you ask a question, they are probably lying. Andfinally, when someone’s eyesare full of tears, they are hurtand sad.

Through our eyes, there areanswers. Through our eyes ouremotions and feelings areclearly revealed. The truth is inour eyes. The eyes really arethe window to your soul, andwhen we hide them no one getsto see who we really are.

So graduates, as we begin anew chapter in our lives, I hopewe can take our glasses off a lit-tle more often. I hope you useyour eyes to visualize yourgoals and dreams clearly. I hopethat when you deal with others, you can look them in the eye,and they will know that whatyou say is true. I hope that inwhatever you do, whether it iscollege or working, you willfeel confident enough to takeyour glasses off and let peopleknow who you really are, butdon’t throw your glasses away— always keep them close by incase you need them.

Seniors, we are all going toface struggles and disappoint-ments in our lives. We’re goingto want to shield ourselvesfrom the sadness and look awayso wear your sunglasses toblock out the negative in theworld, but when wearing them,be sure to peek around everynow and then, so you don’tmiss an opportunity. Keep inmind, though, that those whowear their glasses too oftenbecome so accustomed to themthat they have a hard time see-ing the light.

Keep your eyes open andoften seen. Keep the glasses offbut handy. Don’t be fearful.Face these next few years withconfidence and determination.Decide what you want, and gofor it. Seniors, look at thecrowd. Look at each other. Andlook at me. We are your sup-port.

By LYDIA POWELLValedictorian, The HeritageSchool, Class of 2011

Hello everyone! Thank youfor joining us on this f ineevening to celebrate our gradu-ation. Woohoo! I know thattonight has taken much prepa-ration, so I would like to thanka few people. First, I want tothank Miss Gina and MissComfort for all the planningyou had to go through to maketonight fabulous. Second, Iwould like to thank all theteachers from my past 14 yearsat Heritage. Without you, noneof us on this stage would havemade it very far. Your hardwork and dedication to help usbe the best we can be helpedus get here tonight. Third, Iwant to thank my class. Everysingle one of you has made mytime at Heritage special, and Iknow that I’ve made friend-ships that will last my wholelife. We have character, we usu-ally talk too much, we tend tomake a mess of almost everysituation, but we have certainlymade our mark on TheHeritage School. I am so proudof our class! We are a family. We may be dysfunctional attimes, but we are still a family.

As I begin this speech I amgoing to warn you that this isnot the typical “share the wis-dom of life” valedictory speech.Instead, I would like to sharehow I’ve spent the last fourteenyears of my life. Heritage is aspecial place to me. I distinctlyremember the day I came andvisited for the first time. I wasaround the age of 4, and fromthe moment I stepped footinside the classroom, I thought:“Cool toys; I like it here!” Ofcourse, over the next 14 years, Icame to love many other thingsabout Heritage. I love the free-dom, and how I am accepted asmyself. I love the relationshipsformed between teachers andstudents, and I love the friend-ships I have made with stu-dents in grades above andbelow me. As most of youknow Heritage is not the typi-cal school, so it is appropriatethat the class of 2011 is not thetypical class. We are definitelynot a “plain vanilla” class. Wehave the football players, acheerleader, the brainiacs, thefunny people that make everyclass entertaining (well grog, yeah), the writers, the singers, the soccer players, the actorsand actresses, the cross coun-try stars, the basketball players— we have a little of everythingit seems, even with only so few

in our class. All the underclass-men in their separate gradesoutnumber us at least 2 to 1,and it could certainly be saidthat we are the last “small”class to graduate fromHeritage. For some reason Iremember the year we weredeemed small. It was fourthgrade, and we only had oneclass. From then on 20 seemedto be our magic number. Ineighth grade we all thoughtthat just maybe we could splitinto two classes, but it was notto be. As JJ said, we must havescared everyone else off.

I’ve learned so much in my 14years at Heritage. Not just theschool stuff — like how to findthe area of a parabola, or whothe father of history was, orhow tall the Eiffel tower is —but a lot about life, too. Manywho know me can say that Ialways try to be peppy andhave a smile, so one thing I’velearned is having spirit makeseverything better. This year wecan vouch for that. My class isnot the most spirited in thewhole school. We usually waituntil the last day to do an“okay” spirit window. Ourcheer typically consists ofEmily Gray, Mary Turner,Susannah, Aleisha and meyelling at everyone else to dosomething they really don’twant to do, and only seven peo-ple out of our class dressing outfor spirit days. This year werocked spirit week. Our win-dow turned some heads.Everyone participated in ourcheer, each bringing their ownunique talent, and our spiritday participation was stellar. No, we didn’t win anything, butwe learned to have fun! Andhow can anyone forget ourAWESOME senior prank? While all the underclassmenwere trying to get the zipties

off their lockers, we werethrowing water balloons andsliding down our blow-up slipand slide. As a class that lovesto cause trouble, we did a pret-ty great job that day.

The next lesson I havelearned is appreciation. Overthe past year we have reallylearned to appreciate others. We appreciate how much hardwork the teachers put into theschool, how they push us andhelp us not only become betterstudents but better people. Weappreciate our parents forsharing their wisdom with us,for providing us with every-thing we have, and for makingthe occasional lunch forschool. We appreciate ourfriends for keeping things funand fresh. It is easy to forget toappreciate. I know that some-times I find myself caught upwith everything going on andfailing to notice the great peo-ple that surround me. Weappreciate the experienceswe’ve had at Heritage. I knowsome of us can agree that play-ing sports here is pretty amaz-ing. We can play any sport wewant to! I know I never wouldhave had the opportunity torun cross country anywherebut Heritage, or to participatein Jubilee (the weeklong volley-ball/softball/scholar bowl/tug-of-war extravaganza)! AtHeritage we can experience somany things differently than atother schools. Where else canwe have physical challengeslike: seeing who can throw apencil and make it stick in theceiling while preparing for thenext history test, or doing crazylabs with Miss Gina, or build-ing survival shelters inSpakeland? Nowhere but here.

The last lesson I’ve learned ispersistence. If there is one biglesson I have learned, it is tonever give up. A favorite quoteof my dad’s is WinstonChurchill’s “Never, never, never, never give up.” When hefirst shared the quote with me,all that I could think was,“Wow, that is a ton of nevers!”Never giving up is a decision. There are many situationswhere giving up seems like theeasiest way out. At Heritage, Idon’t know of one teacher whoallows us to give up and quit. They push us, make us workharder, and at the end of theyear, most students can say,“Wow, I have learned so much, and I truly earned my grade.”If we aren’t doing well in aclass, every teacher is alwaysready to work with us duringXL, or to stay after school just

to help us prepare for anupcoming quiz. They put theirheart and soul into making surewe succeed and don’t quit.Sometimes I think that ourclass is continually persistentin annoying teachers. I knowMiss Glenda probably couldnot wait for our junior Englishclass to be over last year, butone thing she never did wasgive up on us. She gave us morethan a few “come to Jesus” lec-tures, and sometimes we stillmessed up, but she pushed usand got us through that year. Soclass, don’t give up!

Here are some lessons thatonly a Heritage student canlearn. From our Pre-K years,we learned to share. Sharing iscaring, you know? From ourtime with Ms. Rosalyn inKindergarten, we learned toalways remember our manners. That includes “yes-ma’ams,”“thank-yous,” and never forget-ting to be a gracious guest. From our time with Mr. Davisin fourth grade, we learned toalways listen; otherwise wemight have found ourselvescherry-picking, putting ournose against the wall, or sen-tenced to the “ice box.” Fromour time with Mrs. Weaver infifth grade, we learned thatcompromise is a powerful tool,

especially when debating therules of the four square court. From our time with Mr.Marchman in sixth grade, welearned to be ourselvesbecause switching names onthe substitute teacher is not thesmartest plan. Don’t forget thenote-taking skills we learnedfrom Mr. Brown in world histo-ry, or all the algebra we learnedfrom our math teachers, because it always comes backto algebra. Be sure to remem-ber we are all Miss Gina’sangels, and that Mr. Stuart’sponytail in the box in his roomis the coolest keepsake ever.Class of 2011, we made it! Wespent our years at Heritagelearning from the best, andnow we can share our“Heritage mindset” with every-one else. As Herb Brooks saidto the U.S. Hockey team on thenight they beat the Soviets, andas Connor Heindel said whenshe ran for SGA secretary:“Great moments are born fromgreat opportunities.” My adviceto you is to take advantage ofall the amazing opportunitiesyou have, and make each andevery moment great. Thankyou!

Thankyou!
