2017 HOA Fees

Just a few reminders as we go into 2017. The monthly assessment amount is $185 per month for Heritage Pines Community Association. Many of the village assessments have changed as well. Please check with your village manager if you have any questions on that amount. You do not have to do anything to change monthly automatic debit amount if you are set up for ACH. It will be processed at the new amount.

ACH and Online/Email Services

If you are not set up for automatic debit (ACH), please consider this simple process. It's easy to set up and you don't have to worry about anything except deducting the amount from your checking balance each month. And in case you did not know, we never deduct your HOA fee before the third of each month. We had many requests to hold off until the third from members that don't receive their direct deposits until then. Also please consider doing away with paper statements. You can view online or have emailed. Just request an “Opt out of paper statement form” from the office, fill out and return with your email address.

Out of Town Mail Service

Recently it was brought to our attention that some mail does not get forwarded if the name on your account is something different, like a trust for example. If you are going out of town for an extended period of time, please let us know in the office. We can set your mail to go to another address so you don't miss important association mailings. Just remember to give us a call or email to change it back when you return home.

By Bob McGough, HPCA Board President

As I took my morning walk with my dogs today I was reminded how peaceful and beautiful Heritage Pines can be on a cool clear day. By the time you read this we should be enjoying our new pavilion. We have just recently approved most of our committees

and we have initiated a number of workshops to improve communications. These workshops will address a number of different topics ranging from BOD/Committees interfaces to discussions revolving around long range planning efforts. We need your input on a number of topics like the golf course and food and beverage operations. We hear repeatedly from a relatively small group of residents on many issues that impact all of us as we move forward. We need to hear from a broader voice of the residents as we make decisions that may impact 1406 home owners. You will have that opportunity as we go through the workshops and surveys. Our goal over the next year is to turn your expectations into an action plan for the future. Our charter as a board is to listen to and support all the residents and decisions that we make should benefit all home-owners. Please make the effort to attend the workshops and Board meetings.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGERBy

It is very hard to believe that when this edition of the newsletter arrives in your mailbox that we are a third of the way through 2017. The community has been active and vibrant this season with many exceptional events

benefitting not only our residents but also those in some of our surrounding communities who are less fortunate and in need of your help. The final big event of the season was the annual Easter Brunch which had 424 reservations and was the largest turn out of any previous years.

For the past couple of months we have been updating you on the progress of the new pavilion. It is now completed and getting rave reviews. This will become an active area for outdoor activities so remember to call the office if you would like to book a function in the future in this area. Over the next couple of months there will be many improvements and upgrades taking place in and around the Clubhouse. We will be bringing in a new treadmill as a demo in the Fitness Center in early May to see how it performs and how well it is received by our residents. We will also be resurfacing the tennis courts with 3 tons on clay on each court followed by the installation of new lines on the new surface. Some new umbrellas have been

Bill Crusselle, Club Manager

ordered for the pool area and hopefully we will have received a new chair to try out in the Mag Room that will sit higher and will no longer need an additional cushion. All of this and the renovation of the final four tee boxes on the golf course will improve and upgrade our facility this summer.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Overall Food Cost for the month of March is 46% with the year to date costs of 40%. For the year of 2016, the average was 46%. The Alcohol Inventory Adjustment of $884 for March of 2017 breaks down as Beer $772, Wine $166 and Liquor ($54).

To date there still is no Pasco County Reclaimed Water billing. No amount has been accrued in 2017 and expenses are under budget by $6,305 in that line item for March and $16,804 for the year to date.

FTE's remain at 68 compared to the budget of 73. March was a three bi-weekly payroll month. Actual and budget amount reflect the 3 payrolls. When comparing to prior year, please note that the first three bi-weekly payroll month last year fell in April 2016. This creates additional payroll and related expense of approx. $88K in 2017- 1st quarter compared to 2016 -1st quarter.

Golf Tournament Revenue was minimal. Revenue from the Canadian/American being ($735) and the Eileen Morgan Outing ($180). The member guest tournament revenue is reflected in profit on hardgoods of ($400) on putters purchased by the Men's League for the event and in Food & Beverage P & Ls ($5,500) for all food events.

Member Charge (Jonas) System

We always ask that you bring your member charge card to the club for purchases. This just helps prevent charge errors. If you do not have your card, please do not sign your charge until you have verified it has correct member information at the top. Also as mentioned before, our Jonas system separates your HOA fees and club charges, so we need to have them paid separately. We appreciate that most monthly accounts are current and if not it is usually a one time over sight and we take that into consideration. Please keep in mind club charges not paid by the 20th of following month can be assessed a $25 late fee as well as HOA fees not paid in the month they are due for.

GOLF COURSE AND COMMON GROUNDS MAINTENANCE NEWS Greetings from the Grounds Maintenance Department. I hope you have been enjoying our beautiful spring weather. The only problem is that we have received very little rainfall. We currently have over 100 wildfires burning throughout the state and several here in our local area. Spring is typically dry in Florida, but currently we are in a severe drought with little rain in our immediate forecast. Year to date rainfall stands at a scant 2”, or 4” below normal! To help alleviate this extreme condition we have increased the use of wetting agents and increased our irrigation run times. You will also notice heads running during the day in dry areas in order to preserve our turf and plant material until the arrival of much needed precipitation.

The golf course continues to improve with the increase in soil temperatures. The Bermuda is starting to grow and fill in. We have planted sprigs and sodded some areas in the rough. Our initial greens aerification has been performed that will help to ensure quality putting surfaces this summer. Spring fertilizer has been applied which will help to maximize lateral growth as we move into the growing season. Our weed and insect controls have also been applied to further enhance turf development.

I would like to commend the Pasco Sheriff Department-also (K9) and a resident, night-gate-patrol staff. Working in the early am morning, we had two trespassers climb the fence onto our property. Having everyone responding quickly and accurately, we were able to stop the two trespassers. Great job! Thank You!

To everyone in Heritage Pines Community, just remember to please watch your SPEED as we are driving in the community. It's not only for everyone's safety but your own. Also please use the STOP signs; they're there for your safety and others!

Just as a reminder, our Emergency backup cell phone at the Gate House number is 727-236-0591. We only use it when phones are not working.

Just a reminder for residents, when coming in the visitor lane or barcode does not work, it is required for Resident Service and Support to see resident’s I.D. Here is a list of our incidents report for the month of March 2017:

GOLF COURSE AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE NEWS cont’d

Our new landscape is starting to mature at the front entrance. The jasmine and yellow mound have been trimmed and will thicken up and fill in throughout the summer months. We will continue with our plant change outs at the end caps to provide additional color and seasonal interest.

Our featured plant this month is the Bush Daisy. We have installed them in front of the Clubhouse and at the parking lot by the driving range. This colorful gem is best suited as a mass planting that shows off its brilliant yellow flowers. It thrives in full sun and requires moderate irrigation. They can be grown as a perennial in our area that tolerates all but the coldest temperatures and performs well with reclaimed irrigation.

We look forward to seeing you on property!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE FOLLOWING RESIDENTS!

If you wish to have your information removed, please contact [email protected]. Please note, information for the newsletter is due on the 13th of each month.

HP MAIL TEAMBy

To our Heritage Pines community, as you all know, the letter carriers conduct a food drive every May. It usually always falls on Mother's day weekend. You may or may not know that all the food collected in our area stays in our area only. In years past we have had issues with churches and shelters trying to come in to Heritage Pines to collect the food before we arrive for our routes. Many of them are from outside our area. We, as your letter carriers pick up our own food on our route as we deliver mail that day. (We love the extra cardio too!) To make that day a little easier on us, if you have food for the collection, please put it out any day during that week. It will certainly help lighten the load on Saturday, and we keep it at the post office until the churches come and get it. It is such a great cause, and we are very happy to do it. I am certain that the date is going to be May 13th. So you can put it out for us any day during that week. We appreciate all you do to help, and we pick up a lot of food from this community alone. So for that we thank you! Thanks for reading.

Everyone's vision can change with age. Some changes are normal, but losing one's vision is not a normal part of getting older. Healthy Vision Institute will be visiting Heritage Pines to provide complimentary screenings to residents. With age, everyone is at a higher risk of developing g l a u c o m a , m a c u l a r degeneration, cataracts, and other eye-related diseases. There are no early warning signs or symptoms before they become serious.

Are you having trouble hearing? Are you overdue for a checkup? Concerned about the health of your ears? ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUESCOMMITTEE

COUNCIL OF VILLAGES

By Sara Brundage

Curbside Recycling Count Has Improved! The Environmental Issues Committee asked our trash/recycling hauler to count the number of homes where recycling had been placed curbside during the months of January, February, and March. We are pleased to announce that Heritage Pines has a 60% participation rate. That is up from the 53% at last count. Thanks to all of you who recycle. If you'd like to start recycling, see the Front Desk for information on how to do it.

Hazardous Waste Collection Day Was Amazing! On March 24, the Environmental Issues Committee sponsored Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The Pasco County Hazardous Waste Collection Team reported that 212 residents dropped off hazardous waste making their homes and Heritage Pines safer places to live. Some of the more interesting statistics regarding what was collected include:

• 2.23 tons of paint

• 50 TVs (less than 36”)

• 5 TVs (larger than 36”

• 10 computers

• 440 fluorescent tubes and 162 compact fluorescent bulbs

• About 280 pounds of household batteries

• Five 55 gallon drums of various toxic solids, liquids, and aerosols

• A variety of other items: cell phones, thermometers, fire extinguishers, small propane cylinders

Great job, Heritage Pines!

Sustainability Presentation Was Informative! On April 5, Mr. Robert Howell, chair of the Energy Committee of the Tampa Bay Sierra Club, shared information on the topic of Sustainability with a group of residents. Sustainability refers to actions by individuals, corporations, institutions, and governments that lead to a healthy environment for life on Earth. It involves meeting the needs of the present through wise use of resources without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Over-population, resource depletion, and government inaction have led us to the point where it is important for all of us to consider how our daily actions and activities impact the environmental health of our planet. Heritage Pines residents already participate in many activities that are useful such as recycling and utilizing reclaimed water for our landscapes. What else can you do? Here are a few easy ideas: continue to next page

• Keep your car maintained properly (less air pollution).

• Car pool for shopping, dining out, church, etc. (less air pollution and more fun).

• Switch to LED bulbs (prices are coming down and the bulbs last a very long time).

• Take re-usable shopping bags with you for grocery shopping (keep them in your car or nearby in the garage).

Rosie Tilton opened the meeting by clarifying the meeting time is 4:00-5:00. Also, because Bill Crusselle is ill, and just home from the hospital, Bob McGough, President of the Board of Directors, will respond to the agenda questions in Bill's absence. Rosie received a number of e-mails from council reps who were very upset about the incident at last month's meeting. She apologized to the GM and stated that in the ten years as Coordinator, she had never had that happen. People felt it was inappropriate – wrong place, wrong time, to bring up issues like that. Rosie wanted to apologize to the Council as the Coordinator. She had no knowledge that it would happen. She said it is important that we acknowledge this as this type of incident could impact the future of this forum when the forum did not participate. She then introduced our speaker, Bob Isgro, President of the Drama Club. He began by saying the club was founded in 2002 by Paul Mattes and currently has 45 members and a seven member board of directors. We have two major performances per year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall and also some radio shows which people seem to like. We have done 30 major plays in 15 years – the first being “12 Angry Jurors” which is also the name of the latest play we performed two weeks ago. This is the first play we did in the round and turned out exceptionally well. Paul's experience is in music and claims not to be an actor. He came to the drama club to support his wife who wanted to act. Bob introduced Nancy Niarchos, Treasurer of the Drama Club who, in her 2 1/2 years as an HP resident, has been in four plays and a stage manager. She had no previous experience in acting but wanted to meet people in her new community. Nancy's point in telling her story is that there are many ways to serve in the drama club without being on stage. You can paint

Page 12: Heritage Pines May 2017 newsletter - ImageEventphotos.imageevent.com/hpnews/heritagepinesnewsletters/HP... · 2017-05-03 · “Heritage Pines is a 55+ Community as defined by the

sets, help with dressing, read plays to recommend for future productions, direct or just be a gofer to get your feet wet and see how things get done. If you are a writer, you are encouraged to submit your play and see what happens. Bob then described how they choose a play. Once a director is selected, the play is chosen and scrips are purchased for each character. Then come auditions and rehearsals begin, about 30-40 before the play is presented. Also, set design, staging, lighting and sound are determined. So there are lots of steps, lots of ways to participate and lots of fun and satisfaction to be had. His reason for addressing the CofV is to ask questions of us – the club's audience. What kinds of plays do you want? Shorter? Comedy? Have you seen a play you would like to see us perform? Would you like to be a part of the club – not necessarily acting but one of the jobs mentioned previously? If you didn't see the last play, why not? He is asking for feedback from his HP audience. Bob invites you to contact him at [email protected]. Funding comes from $5 to join and $10 from each ticket sold. Expenses: the average cost for a playbook is about $9 and we purchase one per character. We pay royalties which can be $100 per performance. When choosing a play we pay attention to the number of lines each character has and try to limit a play to eight characters. We thanked Bob for speaking to us.

Agenda questions were addressed by Bob McGough

1. When there is criminal activity, as reported in your 3/2 e-mail to the community, what is the policy on resident notification? The intent is to notify once we get accurate information that is validated and verified. This is the GM's decision.

2. Our newspaper recently had an article advising that due to the warm weather in Florida this year we should expect an increase in ants, mosquitoes and termites. Is mosquito scheduling planned soon so we don't have a problem? Pasco County monitors insect activity and if there is excessive activity, they will take action. If you have a problem, call Pasco County as a resident with a concern. This is more effective than HP staff calling.

3. Any updated information about the construction of the Assisted Living facility (or whatever it was designated) that at one time was scheduled to be constructed on County Line Road just west of HP property line? The financial backers dropped out and it is no longer active.

4. I have seen food from outside sources consumed in the pool room and at the pool. Isn't there a rule that forbids this? Why aren't we enforcing the established rules? There is not always staff around to see this happening. If you see it, tell the staff. The policy is clear and should be enforced.

5. Could we please get the rib eye steak sandwich back on the Fireside menu? The rib eye was on the dinner menu. Those that didn't sell were put on the menu as a special. It probably will not come back as a standard offering.

6. If I, as a resident, am having a problem with an HP employee, what do you suggest I do? Do I go to their Department Manager or the GM? Will my personal

COUNCIL OF VILLAGES cont’d complaint be kept confidential? Talk to the immediate manager or the GM. There is a complaint form at the front desk that can be used.

7. Why are the best waitresses leaving HP? Don't know who wrote the question or who they are referring to so have no way to answer the question.

8. Without any discussion or warning, the salad bar at the Friday fish fry was discontinued. Why? Primarily we were having a lot of waste. If the food isn't consumed that nite, it is thrown away.

I don't know why we were not notified.

9. When the sidewalks in HP are cleaned, what type of water is used? Potable or reclaimed? Potable water is used.

10. The RV and boat storage brings in income to the community so why can't individual keys get made and given to those that park a vehicle there? Could even charge a deposit and refund when returned. There is a security lock which means keys cannot be duplicated. It is a closely controlled process and if keys are given out, they can be copied – not good.

11. Is it possible to get a handout of the plants that don't like reclaimed water? Two handouts were given out, one came off the internet and is from University of Florida, St. Pete. The other is more closely aligned with HP. They have conflicting information i.e. UofF says azaleas and ligustrum have no tolerance for reclaimed water yet they grow very well here. Although there is a lot of info available that talks about the high salt content of reclaimed water, Pasco Co. maintains the sodium content of our reclaimed water is less than 160 mg/liter. Our potable water has a higher salt content than that. Suggestion was to visit the gazebo garden to see what is doing well there. The Florida Native Plant Society is another source of information. Go to FNPS.org, enter your county and your growing conditions and you will get a list of plants that will thrive in those conditions.

12. Resident in my village reported that the budget item for the Food and Beverage has been consistently at an approximate loss of $130,000. Is this true and if so, why? This would be more appropriate at the board meeting instead of this venue. However, I will quote from a study – the average for private clubs in the state of Florida is for every $1 in revenue you spend $1.40. We average around $1.24 which isn't so bad. Our GM reduced expenses by $500,000 last year, part of which was F&B. We have to consider inflation, salaries, insurance and the increased cost of doing business. There are many discussions on how to decrease our losses. One way to cut the loss is to shut the restaurant down several nights a week – or have less service than you have now. Another is to assess each household a minimum to be spent in the restaurant each month. Another is to charge for karaoke. The list goes on. An important consideration is our ability to handle an increased number of diners – and if the number of diners increases, so do expenses. Its complicated. Resident questions: Is the board happy with the GM? Bob: Generally yes, and I personally am very happy with our GM. Second question: Where does the board get feedback from the residents? I think the council is the perfect place to get that

information. Bob: I don't think we do a very good job of getting information from the residents and we are working on that with workshops and surveys. The only feedback we get now is from the 25 people who are at the board meeting. Third question: Driving around in a two mile circuit there are four X-rated businesses. Can our HOA participate in County Commission meetings in order to take a stand or position on these businesses because they affect our property values? Does HP have any say in the proliferation of these types of businesses? Bob: Lets sit and talk about this as I too was surprised by this when I moved here.

Rosie agrees that the Council is the voice of the grass roots here and wonders if it can be the vehicle that allows the information to flow from residents to the board through the council reps.

The Community/Memorial Tree Program provides the opportunity for our residents to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or friend. Trees may also be purchased to honor a person or because you wish to donate one in your name to beautify our community. They can also be purchased as a gift, perhaps a birthday or anniversary idea. Prices vary according to the type and size of tree. Residents may choose a general location for a donated tree which can be on the golf course, along the main boulevard or in other areas of the community. The final placement of each tree will be approved by Heritage Pines maintenance facilities. Trees will be planted during the months of March/April and October/November. Please plan your purchase during the preceding months. The Community/Memorial Tree Program is headed by Linda O'Leary. Please contact Linda at 819-9207 for pricing information.

ARCHITECTURAL CONTROLCOMMITTEE

By Mike Miller, ACC Chairman

The form used to submit a request to perform changes to you property, Exterior Change Request (ECR), is published in The Pines Newsletter every month. Yet, we continue to receive older outdated forms which sometimes delay approval of your project. It can't get any easier. The HP ACC will no longer approve any requests that are not submitted using the newest form. Blank forms are also available at the front desk.

If you live in a maintained village be sure to get your ECR approved by the village's ACC (or applicable review authority) before submitting your request to the HP ACC. All requests must be received at the front desk the day before the scheduled ACC meeting. The ACC usually meets twice a month (first and third Tuesday). For more information refer to Section 2. EXTERIOR CHANGES or MODIFICATION of the Architectural Control Manual.

The Committee is always available to assist, our names are listed in The Pines Newsletter. Thank you.

Memorial Day Services at the Clubhouse

Monday, May 29thDoors will open at 12:30 p.m. - Ceremony starts at 1 p.m. sharp!

If you arrive late use the rear entrance to avoid interruption of presentation of the colors and National Anthem.

Dear friends, neighbors and acquaintances. It is that time of year to take one hour of your busy schedules to pay tribute to those that have paid the ultimate price and those that have yet to return. The brave men and women that unselfishly decided that their life was not more important than yours by defending the precious rights that our founding fathers provided for all of us. Much too often we take those rights for granted. Our nation's “true hero's” are buried in Arlington, under the sea at the U.S.S. Arizona, in graves on foreign soil, and even some that have yet to come home.

“One hour is all I ask, and I promise you, that when you leave the ceremony, you will feel sorrow for those that you have known; but you will feel good with yourself for paying tribute to those who gave their all.”

~ Respectfully, Benjamin “Ben” Bell , ATCS (AW) U.S.N. (ret.)

“Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and success of liberty.”

~ John F. Kennedy

This event is free and with the exception of the Color Guard, it is organized and conducted by our own HP Residents.

NINERS LADIES’GOLF ASSOCIATION

It has been a busy season so far for the Ladies' Niners league, with more events in the works for the coming months. On March 7th and 14th, there were plenty of smiles and laughter as we played our annual Member/Member tournament. Each golfer was greeted at a table full of colorful gift bags, thoughtfully prepared by our president Mary Lucas. Players were welcomed to a room full of balloons, beachballs and sand buckets. At the conclusion of the second week, luncheon tables were cleverly decorated with golf clubs and flip flops. Beautiful door wreaths, made by Bonnie Behling, were awarded for cart and costume prizes. Carl Benson photographed each team during play, and as we enjoyed our luncheon, showed very entertaining photos of our games. Thanks, Carl! The weather was beautiful and sunny, but chilly, as we wound up the final rounds and headed into the Clubhouse for a meal of good hot soup and delicious sandwiches. Thank you once again to our Food and Beverage Department for your super service. Our thanks and admiration go to the Board, Tournament committee and Social committee for everything you do to arrange these outstanding events. It's a huge job and we really appreciate the efforts of all who take part – including the Niners who participate.

A lot of imagination and preparation went into the decoration of golf carts and costumes. First place in cart decoration went to Cheryl Armstrong and Sandy Schiesz. Second was won by Rhonda Gibson and Diane Rericha. Best costume prizes were awarded to Diane LaBellarte and Bonnie Behling. Second place was won by Rhonda Gibson and Diane Rericha. We loved them all.....thank you everyone! Great fun!

Janet Allison pulled the ultimate April Fool's Day trick with a Hole-In-One on #12. Everyone present at the bar was treated in her honor... Congratulations Janet!

Our Nine and Dine group had a wonderful turnout on March 19th. Twenty eight players participated in a scramble followed by dinner at the Fireside... thank you, Mike. First place went to Zee Ferris and guest Gil Kondrach / Cindy and Jeff Siddons. Second place went to Dianne and Gene Estensen / Maggie Dorfer and Joanne Neil. Winners chose the next homes for our Lady trophies - they were to be Sharon Logan, Dianne Estensen, Joanne Neil and Zee Ferris.

The Niners' “Sock Hop” was held on the evening of April 7th. The dance was attended by one hundred forty one guests - some clad in poodle skirts, saddle shoes and styles of the era. There were audience participation moments to make the dance even more fun and it was reported by some to be “the best event ever” in our PAC room. Wonderful memories for a lot of residents and members of our club! Thank you Betty Tincher and Diane Hellenga and all who danced the night away.

On April 11th, large bowls of icy punch were offered to Niners as we raised our glasses in a toast to those who will be heading out of town soon. We wish them all a safe trip and a wonderful summer until we meet again in the fall.

Mark your calendars for coming events. Save the date for our July 11th Pool Party. Our course is closed and it will be a good time for some cool refreshment - water and otherwise.

This year's overnight outing will be held at the beautiful Mission Inn Resort and will be held on October 24th and 25th. Your stay will include one buffet breakfast, two buffet lunches and one dinner plus nine holes of golf each day on two different and luxurious golf courses. We have stayed at this hotel before and the accommodations are wonderful. The cost is $276.00pp double occupancy. A $100.00 deposit (due by June 30) will reserve your spot. The balance of $176.00 must be in by September 8th. There will be no refunds after September 24th, which is 30 days prior to the event. Checks are to be made out to HPNLGA and given to Dianne Estensen or Cathy Stoehs. If you find you must cancel for any reason, try to find someone to take your place. Single room rates are $356.00. Non-golfers are welcome to attend this event at a cost of $198.94. There are various amenities at the Mission Inn for everyone to enjoy.

18 HOLE “PAR”TICULARSMEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION

By Marjorie Convery

The Heritage Pines golfing community was deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our former president and friend, Betty Simpson. I asked Linda Nelson, a good friend of Betty's and also a past president of the league, to write a tribute. She wrote:

We first met Betty through Couples golf. She was just learning the game and she played most Fridays. Over time, she became known as “hit them straight, Betty.” Always down the middle.

She loved the game so much she decided to get involved with the HPLGA, and in 2010-2011, she was president. She loved Mickey Mouse, Golf, the Lady Bug and Bonnet Creek. Many went there with her, either as couples, or just a girls' trip. She really knew how to play the points of her time share and through her generosity, after a while, we were staying in the presidential suite.

As chair of the Lady Bug Tournament for six years, she helped start a tradition that now has become so well known, women from as far away as Ocala come to play in it. After six years of heading up the Lady Bug, she gave it up, and it took two people to fill her shoes. This year, she returned, and this was to be her seventh year as chair.

You will be missed. God bless you, Betty, and keep hitting them down the middle.

Presidents' Cup

Our major event in March was the Presidents' Cup. This was a two day, eclectic tournament, where the better net score of

either day is combined to make one eighteen hole score. The overall winner this year, and recipient of the trophy is CAROLYN GALLO! Her combined net total score was 55. The results are as follows:

Flight One: 1st: Joan Herr, Net 56, 2nd: Candice Maturi, Net 57, 3rd: Barbara Tharp, Net 57, 4th: Judy Peterson, net 61

Flight Two: 1st. Marjorie Fuller, Net 59, 2nd: Cheryl Lichtenberg, Net 60, 3rd: Marjorie Convery, Net 61, 4th: Mary McGuire, Net 61.

Flight Three: 1st: Linda Nelson, Net 60, 2nd: Linda O'Leary, Net 60, 3rd: Patty Haseck, Net 62, 4th: Carole Isgro, Net 62.

Flight Four: 1st: Deborah Gaines, Net 56, 2nd: Denise McKay, Net 58, 3rd: Sandra Hreczuck, Net 58, 4th: Carol Henningsen, Net 60.

May Events

May 2-Lady Bug Tournament, we will be hosting women from around the area to join us in this popular event. This year, the Tournament will be dedicated to our friend, and fellow golfer, Betty Simpson. May 9th-Three Blind Mice, May 16th: Even holes, May 23rd: 6-6-6 (Partner), May 30th: Tee to Green.

Finally, when I met Betty in 2010, she seemed, to me, to be the woman with a hundred hats, each one matching her outfit. Where ever you are now, Betty, may you still look jaunty, and ready to play golf, as Linda said, straight down the middle.

MEMBER/GUEST - On March 23, 24 and 25th the HPMGA hosted the 15th annual Member/Guest Tournament. The tournament team led by Scott Taveau outdid themselves this year and in this writer’s opinion had the best tournament ever. The MGA gives special thanks to GM Bill Crusselle and his staff for their help in making this a success. Special thanks go to F&B Manager Mike Russell, Pro Ricky Weber and Grounds Maintenance Supt. John Burns. We had 62 two man teams compete with a guest coming as far as the State of Washington to participate. Bride's maid in this event Bob Klepps and Joshua Roland beat out five time champions Jeff Edwards and Dan Estes.

DO YOU PLAY NINE HOLES OF GOLF?

Heritage Pines is different from most other golf courses in that we have 'shotgun starts' most days. Several of our golfers play nine holes of golf. That makes it confusing when it comes to posting scores. Whether you have an 18-hole handicap or a nine-hole handicap, you MUST post your nine hole score – ONLY IF at least seven holes are played on the front or seven holes are played on the back. (i.e. IF you play four on the front and five on the back, your score cannot be posted.) Nine holes that start on 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15 or 16 will NOT give you the number of holes needed for posting purposes.

How to post a Nine-hole score when less than nine holes are played: For the holes not played, record PAR plus any handicap strokes that you are allowed. If you do not know how many handicap strokes you are allowed, please contact our golf Pro, Ricky Weber or you may contact me at [email protected] or someone on the handicap committee. We are here to help.

If you have an 18-hole handicap, the GHIN system will keep track of your nine-hole scores. It will put two nine-hole scores together whether the 9's are one on the front and one on the back, two on the front, two on the back or even from a different course/tees.

The important thing to remember is POST ALL YOUR ELIGIBLE SCORES.

On April 12, the Heritage Pines Food & Wine Club had a fun time at the Strong Tower Vineyard in Spring Hill. Fifteen members and friends toured the vat room and

tasted their wines. We were pleasantly surprised that Florida grapes could make such great tasting wines! Members brought cheese and crackers to pair with the various wines. You can visit the vineyard's website at http://www.strongtowervineyard.com/

Our food and wine adventures continue with the May 11th, ABC Fine Wines & Spirits Wine & Food Festival (US. 19 and Hudson Ave.) at 6:00 p.m. All residents are welcome to join us. The cost is $10.00 for tastings of various wines and local restaurants will have food to sample.

Also in May (date TBA) we will visit the Keel & Curley Winery and Two Henry's Brewery in Plant City. We will be travelling by bus. Again, HP residents are welcome to join us as room allows.

We also want to thank our Advisors, Chef Josh Farrington and Mike Russell for their continued support and advice about our events, food tastings and wine pairings.

More culinary and wine adventures are in the works for our growing number of Foodies and Wineauxs here at Heritage Pines. Who knew we had so many!!

Reading selections to be made at the Book Club's first summer luncheon of 2017.

The Heritage Pines Book Club meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month. In April, readers submitted their book nominations for the 2017-2018 reading year, and those are listed on the Bulletin Board. During the summer, all our meetings are lunch meetings outside Heritage Pines. Ballots will be cast and

Hello Heritage Pines! We are now feeding 42 children at Mary Giella every Friday and the food pantry is low. If all could put in one can a week, we could feed these hungry children. We do need vegetables as we are all out. Cereal is also low. Please give what you can; Wes and I thank you all. Any questions please call us at 869-9642. Thanks again, Penny Norton

MARY GIELLA FOOD DONATIONS

April 2nd was our annual Tennis/ Golf outing hosted by Chuck Widlowski. There was no lack of surprises with best ball, longest drive, best putt (with a wooden putter!!!) and best chip. If all that wasn't enough, hole 15 held a special treat. As each group passed the hole, they were treated to wearing red and blond wigs, grass skirts, jail bird outfits, Hershey bar suits and bathrobes. Afterwards, there was a luncheon held at the Clubhouse by the pool area. Laurie Rhodes and Kathleen Jesselson prepared a wonderful display of flowers and calligraphy at each of the tables. Some pictures of the event are posted by the tennis courts inside the bulletin board.

Judy Peterson hosted another women's doubles clinic, instructed by Judy Janette. It is the goal of the continuing clinics to gradually increase the skill level of those who attend. It takes regular instruction/practice to learn a new skill.

Lou Gutfleish is working out the details for a Friday, May 5th Heritage Pines/Heritage Springs tennis tournament. The

tournament will be hosted by Heritage Springs. Players will be treated to a luncheon at Heritage Springs after the tournament. All levels of players are welcome to attend. Please get in touch with Lou Gutfleish at 727-697-0203 or Bill Tory at 586-873-9697. Coming up this fall, Lou is planning a handicapped tennis event the details to be announced at a later date.

As you may have noticed, work has started on the new pavilion by the tennis courts. At the time of this writing, the footings were dug, the rebar was in place and the concrete has been poured and diamond saw cut. The next steps will be to install the six supporting posts, roof trusses and add the roofing, which will match the bathroom roof material. The supporting posts will also be bricked at the base to match the bathroom brick.

Have you seen water standing on courts three and four hours after a heavy rain? Have you noticed that the base of our net posts on courts 1, 2 and 3 are heavily rusted at the base? Are you wondering when the courts will be re-striped? Well, take heart! A quote from Welch (the company that installed our courts) has been turned in to the Heritage Pines Board. Once the board has two more quotes, it will begin the selection process. After that, all of the necessary improvements will begin to take place.

Last month a picture of the Championship Tournament's Mixed Doubles Champions was accidentally left out of the newsletter. The following picture is Kathleen Lonergan and Lou Gutfleish, our 2017 Mixed Doubles Champions!

The Sportsman's Club meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Magnolia Room at 11:00 a.m. This meeting usually lasts about an hour. Afterward, some enjoy lunch together in the Clubhouse. Our May meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 11th.

Club activities include: bocce, pistol and rifle target shooting, clay target shooting, horseshoes, fresh and salt water fishing, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Everyone with an interest in these and other related activities is welcome to join us.

Bocce players are now meeting on Tuesdays at 12:00 noon on the bocce courts. Come out, bring a partner and join the fun. Observers and players of all skill levels are welcome.

Those who shoot trap, skeet, five stand and crazy quail, form

groups and on Wednesday mornings, carpool to either the Silver Dollar Shooters Club in Odessa, or to Robinson Ranch in Dunnellon.

On Wednesday, April 5th, club members presented two new gun racks and two six foot long benches to Tom Haynes owner of Robinson Ranch Trap and Skeet Club. Tom was very appreciative and sends his thanks and best wishes to all.

Sincere thanks also go to Bill Pizzi, Mike Denny, Tom Squadrito and Frank Gaizo who helped with the actual construction and delivery!

Car pools to the trap and skeet fields usually leave the community around 8:30 a.m. Silver Dollar and Robinson each offer traditional clay target shooting in addition to other shotgun games like crazy quail, and five-stand which are also great fun and a good test of shotgunning skill. Those needing a ride should call Mike Milkowski at 516-857-2229 for assistance.

Rifle and pistol target shooters usually shoot at The Phoenix Gun Club on Wednesday or Friday mornings. Check out the Phoenix website for their range schedule.

If you are interested in doing some kayaking or canoeing, give Howard Stringer a call at 727-204-0603.

Bicycling outings are being arranged by Pat Lanphier. Pat can be reached at 352-686-6598. If you like to bike, call Pat.

Q: Can you provide some guidelines to help me know when it is safe to open email messages? A neighbor received a message they thought was from a friend and when she opened it her computer got infected with a virus that was very difficult to remove.

A: Even when using the best antivirus protection program available one has to be careful opening email messages. I suggest you pay attention to the Sender and Subject information before you even open an email. If you see a message from a source you don't recognize, delete and don't open it. Another clue that a message may not be safe is the wording in the email Subject. If the Subject contains misspellings, doesn't make sense or is inconsistent with what you'd expect from the sender be wary.

If you decide to open an email, think about whether the message is consistent with the sender's character. If there is no text just a link, clicking could result in a download that will infect your computer. Recently, I've had clients receiving messages from friends with no subject and just a link in the email body. Several clicked on the link and their computers were infected requiring my assistance to remove the virus. Upon investigation, these emails were never actually from the friend. In one case, the friend's computer was infected sending out virus emails without their knowledge.

As an email sender you should always enter appropriate information in the Subject. If you're including a link to a website, include some descriptive text so the recipient will know it's from you. I always include some sort of a signature too.

Also, be wary of political messages that reference controversial topics. This type of message was very prolific during the election season and continues today. My suggestion is, if you are not 100% certain that the sender is authentic and the website link is safe, you delete the email.

Q: When using my mouse, I am sometimes confused as to when to Right-Click or Left-Click. Can you explain the difference and help me understand when to Right or Left Click?

A: For most Windows functions and programs the Right-Click button lists the Options or choices available, while the Left-Click button selects the Action.

For example: if you Left-Click on a Link in an Internet Explorer Browser window, the associated link will open in the current Window. If you Right-Click on the Link, a list of choices will appear. To select one of these choices, move the mouse pointer down the list to the item and Left-Click. I often use this method when I want to have the new link open in a new Window instead of in the current Window.

Try a Right-Click on Desktop Icons or within documents, Picture Files etc. as an easy way to explore what options are available. Remember that nothing happens until you Left-Click.

In Windows 8/8.1/10, Right-Click plays an even more important role. If you Right-Click on any Windows 8/10

Friday, May 19th, from 1-4:00 p.m.in the Magnolia Room

Dale Mallek will be holding a different type of class in May. He will have an open class answering questions on any technical subject of interest to Heritage Pines residents. This session is part of a series of monthly classes that Dale is offering to his fellow Heritage Pines residents at NO CHARGE. Enrollment is limited to 25 and based on attendance at previous training classes, this class will fill up quickly. (RSVP REQUIRED directly to Dale, 727-697-7260 or [email protected])

When signing up, please provide a topic or a question that you would like Dale to discuss or answer. This will give him an opportunity to do some research and to provide a more accurate answer. If residents find this type of session beneficial it will be repeated in the future.

Possible topics for the session: Windows 10 (how different is it from Windows 7?); Antivirus program (how much protection do they really offer?); HD TV (what is 4KTV and do I want it?); Internet speed (what speed is enough for the typical HP resident?); Home Theater (Do I need a multi-speaker system or is a sound bar adequate?); Google Chrome (do I need it and what is the difference between Chrome, Internet Explorer and Windows 10 Edge?).

These topics are only suggestions. This will be your session. If you are interested in participating, contact Dale to sign up and give him your question or topic.

Dale has 40+ years experience delivering and supporting technology services. His most recent employer was Hewlett Packard. In 2009, Dale began Mallek Technology Solutions providing computer and home theatre support services to Heritage Pines and residents of neighboring communities.

If you plan to attend or have suggestions for future classes, please contact Dale Mallek at 727-697-7260 or [email protected].

If you haven't played pool (billiards) with the Ladies, or the Couples Groups then you are missing a lot of laughs and fun. We do not have a league, but we do have some talented players who are very patient and are helping all of us to improve our game.

The Ladies Group plays on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. through 3 p.m. and on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. The “ladies” are always willing to welcome new players and teach novices. Simply drop in to play either Wednesdays or Thursdays in the billiards/card room at the Clubhouse.

Then we also have a Couples Group meeting to play on Saturdays from 2 p.m. through 4 p.m. This consists of beginners to some amazingly skilled generous players who want to share their knowledge while still having a good time with their partners. The comradery and support that everyone gives each other, whether a good shot has been made or a miss, makes the afternoon a lot of fun while giving you an opportunity to meet some new residents. Makes for some very interesting matches!!!!

If you played pool “back in the day” or never at all, please feel free to drop in and join us. We know you'll enjoy it like we do. For further information, please call Ruth Stickel at 869-7848 or Deb Tribbey at 857-6583.

BILLIARDS FOR EVERYONE

DRAMA CLUBBy John Popovich

Did you see the performance of our spring play “12 Angry Jurors”? If not, you missed one of the best dramatic plays ever performed by the Drama Club in its 15 years of existence. The show exceeded all our expectations. The story line was moving

and the cast was nothing less than amazing and professional. Add to that it was performed in the “theater-in-the round” format never done before. All cast members and the technical people behind the scenes have given our great Club a place in the history of the theater in Heritage Pines. It will be difficult for future Directors and cast members to top this one. We have the talent and expertise to compete with any and all community theaters near us. So, all you residents, why buy tickets to the plays performed by others when you can get the same professional performances right here at home in Heritage Pines at less cost?

As mentioned in our April article, Bob Isgro, Drama Club President, invited residents to attend an informal get together with the members of the HPDC Board of Directors to provide Board members with their input for future performances. It was successful in that a good discussion was held by those in attendance. The most interesting result was the call for musicals and/or snippets of scenes from movies e.g. drama, comedy or musical.

Now, musicals need actors, singers, dancers and a chorus line. Does the Drama Club have that kind of talent available? No, not yet, but we are determined to find the talent and put on a full musical or a snippet of one or more soonest. We have actors. We have singers. So, let this be the first call to our residents for dancers. Can you tap? Do the soft shoe? Some years ago we had a large group of lady residents who performed on stage with great tap dancing shows. Maybe we can get some of them out of retirement and back on stage? Think about it ladies! You would make the perfect chorus line.

In keeping with his effort to solicit input from outside the Drama Club, Bob Isgro has accepted an invitation from the Council of Villages to make a presentation in late April on Drama Club activities. We will give you a report on that in our next monthly Newsletter.

A call for a Director for our fall play has gone out. You will be informed when a selection has been made including a synopsis of the play she/he has chosen to direct. Likewise, a call for a Director for our Radio show to be performed in September has also gone out. In this case, unlike the policy of allowing a Director to select a play of his/her choice, the Drama Club Board of Directors selects an episode for the Radio show then calls for a Director to direct it. As such, it has selected an episode from the Mary Tyler Moore TV series from years past titled “Chuckles Bites the Dust.” This is an extremely funny show we know you will enjoy.

Are you bored in retirement? Join the Drama Club! We guarantee you an exciting future.

Our group is open to all new and established residents of Heritage Pines. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Please join us. An Oneg follows the prayer service.

Chavurah meets on the first Friday of the month in the Craft Room at 7:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please call Sheila Schwartzman at 863-8802. We look forward to seeing all of you. Shalom Y'All.

Our study of 1 Peter and 2 Peter will continue until our last meeting on May 22. We will suspend meeting for the summer and will begin our study of Paul and his mission trips in September. It is never too late to join our group for the rest of this spring. We meet in the Magnolia Room on Mondays from 9 - 11 a.m. The only resource that you need is your personal Bible. We welcome novice Bible learners and experienced students. Our group consists of women who attend various churches in our area and have a love for Bible study. If you are new in Heritage Pines and seeking to meet caring and friendly women, we are one of three wonderful Bible study groups that strive to love and support our sisters in the faith. It is worth your while to try all of us to find one that fits you comfortably.

If you wish more information about our group, please call Carole Hopkins at 727-697-1664 or e-mail her at [email protected].

During the month of May we will continue our study of 2 Corinthians by Kelly Minter. The study is called “All Things New”. Over eight sessions, Kelly Minter is leading us through the Letter of 2 Corinthians to discover how Paul's encouragement to the believers in Corinth challenges the church today. The city of Corinth was like our cities - full of people and full of problems. Paul challenged the church to share the message of reconciliation – the gospel – despite hardship, pain, and struggle. He encouraged the new believers, reminding them the gospel was meant to thrive in circumstances such as these.

As new creations in Christ, we are to spread the message of Jesus' grace, comfort, and generosity with the world. In the way we live, we must boldly declare: He makes “all things new”. Each week we will view a DVD of approximately 35 minutes and have a discussion from workbooks available for study during the week.

We invite all women in the community to join us to learn more about this inspiring book of the Bible. We meet every Tuesday in the Clubhouse's Magnolia Room from 9:00 until 11:00. Most Tuesdays we enjoy having lunch together after the Bible study in the Clubhouse dining room.

LIBRARY NEWSThe Library continues to see a great deal of activity each week. Often the volunteers are just finishing up shelving and cataloging books (thinking their job is done) and in come two or three armloads or bags of books! It is great fun to see the variety of books our residents read - we are a diverse and interesting group of retirees!

Remember hard cover fiction books are on the right-hand side of the Library and non-fiction books are on the left- hand side of the Library. Also on the right- hand side are the paperback books and they do not need to be returned. We do ask that you return hard cover books. Please, we are not able to accept puzzles, catalogs, magazines, or books of limited appeal. Please contact Mary Lou Ballmann 727-862-1438 or Susan Bell 727-868-4261 if you have any questions.

HERITAGE PINES SINGERSJoanne Florin and Paul Mattes have teamed up to bring you great opportunities to sing. We have the Conference Room from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays (now every Thursday). Joanne has singers from three to four and is doing American standards which include some show tunes. Men and women are welcome. At four, Paul is putting together a musical review based on the careers of Rogers and Hammerstein. We call the group a show choir. The review will have some small skits and several great songs, with solos and duets in addition to big group numbers. As a performance date is not yet set, there is plenty of time to join in; catching up will not be difficult. Joanne and Paul will gladly provide help. Joanne and Paul are at both sessions. So come and join one of these, or both.

Tai Chi and Golf

Tai Chi may be the perfect complement to your golf game.

Did that get your attention, golfers? The key components of Tai Chi and a good golf swing are similar – a combination of relaxation, the mind and body working together, and balanced motion. 1.The movements in Tai Chi and in golf both require a smooth acceleration to generate maximum power at the precise moment of contact – club on ball or fist on opponent. Now Tai Chi these days is not about fighting an opponent, but it did originate as a martial art in China about 500 years ago, so the moves are derived from combat.

As an “internal martial art” it shares some basic principals with the golf swing. 1. First, you relax into the initial stance. You shift your weight, coil your body around a vertical axis to build up power, and then uncoil your body to release the power. The power derives from the lower half of the body, flowing up from the feet, through the hips, and into the arms and hands.

The many ways that Tai Chi helps you physically and mentally will also help your golf game with increased flexibility, stronger lower body, improved balance, improved concentration, as well as helping to build calmness and confidence. With a positive attitude, your golf game will be less stressful, and proper breathing techniques learned doing Tai Chi increases your stamina on the course.

Tai Chi will not make you a Pro, but it can add to the “tools” in your bag to improve your game.

The H.P. Friendly Quilters want to remind everyone who wants to have a good time, while sharpening their quilting skills that we meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Craft Room.

We did a fun little project on April 28th. We made cell phone caddies. It didn't take much time or materials and would make a great gift. Everyone brought their sewing machine plus the supplies needed to complete the project, which had been previously emailed to them by Diane Rericha.

We're making plans for more projects in the future and would love for you to join us. One of the projects we are planning on is learning the Tumbling Block. The tool to make it is $14.95 plus tax. The teacher will be Genie Bets. Before we choose a date, we'd like to know who would be interested in signing up for it. If you have any questions, please call Faye Philie at (727) 697-0505. We know the snowbirds are heading for home, but we sure hope to see you next season.

HERITAGE PINES SOFTBALLWe had four practices in the month of April. All the practices were held once a week on Friday at 9:30 a.m. as follows: April 7th, April 14th, April 21st and April 28th. Everyone had at least 15 hits per batting session or a total of 30 hits each per practice (two hitting sessions per practice).

The Memorial Park field is always well maintained by the Pasco County maintenance crew. It was raked and the screen to protect our pitchers was installed.

We had an average of fourteen players turnout for each practice. Here is the picture of seventeen players that were in attendance for the initial practice of the month on April 7th. See picture below:

Top Row: Myron Wright, Frank Adamouski, Carl Benson, Jeff Mariano and Anthony Chivallati

Bottom Row: Ric Layne, Bob Gardella, Frank DeRoachment, Ron Krow, Lou Dallojacomo, Al Grosso and Billy Reuter.

Missing from the picture is Kevin McCrystal (photographer), Bob Castelli, CB King, Paul Katzenbach and Jim Pulver. These players came in after practice had started.

Here is the list of our upcoming practices for the month of May: May 5th, May 12th, May 19th and May 26th.

Anyone in Heritage Pines who is interested in playing softball can just come to any one of our practices and we will include you on our future mailing lists. All practices start at 9:30. We always look forward to seeing all our players every Friday and encourage and welcome new players to join up with us.

SEVEN BENEFITS OFWATER EXERCISE

Recent Research

It is proven doing water exercise two to three times a week can have significant improvements in strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. It can also decrease the risk of disability, improve balance and increase your ability to perform daily activities with ease.

Heritage Pines folks don't realize how fortunate they are to have this form of exercise right at their fingertips with a United States Water Fitness Instructor who is certified.

1. Less joint impact: The buoyancy of the water reduces joint loading, which is particularly beneficial after joint replacement as well as to help manage chronic pain. “Less joint stress” was reported by all of my clients as a key benefit. “Water exercise was recommended by doctors. After knee surgeries, it is the only low-impact exercise I can do.”

2. Total body training: Water provides multi-directional resistance, making it easier to enjoy a more balanced workout. For example, on land arm curls targets the biceps both on the way up to lift the weight against gravity and on the way down to control against gravity. In the pool, it's different. Resistance is everywhere. Try this same move. On the way up, biceps work against water's resistance, but the triceps must engage to resist against water on the way down. “Water exercise gives me a full body workout. I have gained strength and stamina!” –

3. Reduce joint and muscle pain: Gentle exercises help to improve circulation and hydrate the muscles. Multi-directional moves help to pump nutrients to the joints helping to reduce joint and muscle pain experiences constant arthritic knee pain: “Water exercise is the only exercise that makes my knees feel better.”

4. Gain more mobility: We can move more freely in water. Regular participation will reduce stiffness and make movement on land more comfortable. “Water exercise helps keep my back limber.”

5. Improve heart health: Water exercise is a great low-impact aerobic activity. Depending on your fitness level, options from walking to high intensity intervals – each have a positive impact on cardiovascular health. Even very fit, 20 year-old says: “I get a great cardio workout in the pool... just the same as on land!”

6. Build better balance: Water supports weak muscles and helps minimize the fear of falling. It provides confidence as the body is constantly challenged to stabilize against the continuously moving water. Try rhythmical moves to improve balance. For example, trying jogging; Right Foot, Left Foot, Right Foot – HOLD (on right). Then, Left Foot, Right Foot, Left Foot – HOLD (on left). Repeat several times.

7. Stay cool: What better way to burn hundreds of calories than staying cool while you work! Since water is cooler than your body temp, the heat flows away from your body and results in feeling as if you are never “breaking a sweat. “Water is so refreshing! I love being able to exercise outside.”

Most importantly keep moving.

May 26th: ROMEO Breakfast Meeting (Couples Breakfast). This breakfast buffet will be set up and ready to go at 9 a.m. We will begin our monthly meeting when breakfast is finished. This month we have a speaker (Ryan Golinski). Ryan works for the Florida Tax Advisors (FTA) and will be giving us a presentation on Estate Planning.

July 21st: ROMEO Annual Dance in Clubhouse PAC Room. This Friday night dance will start at 6:30 p.m. and end at 9:30 p.m. The All Shook Up band with lead singer, Artie, will be entertaining us. There will be numerous cold and hot appetizers and a cash bar. The cost is only $15 per person and tickets can be purchased at the front desk by ROMEO members beginning on Wednesday, May 17th. (See page 25 of this Heritage Pines newsletter.)

August 24th: Rays Baseball Game at Tropicana Field / Couples Event. The ROMEO Club is planning an outing at Tropicana Field on August 24th to see the Tampa Bay Rays play the Toronto Blue Jays in a Thursday matinee game that starts at 1:10 p.m. The stadium seats are in the Press level, which is directly behind home plate. The cost is $35 per person and includes the cost of the game tickets and the bus transportation. The bus leaves from the Clubhouse at 9:30 a.m. There are only 57 seats on the bus and they usually fill up quickly; so, if you want to go, you will need to purchase your tickets as soon as you can. Fall Events ROMEO Luncheon and Sightseeing Cruise

September, Date TBD. This event is being managed by Phil Flynn 727-378-3884. We are currently in the planning stages for another one of our very popular luncheon and sightseeing cruises. Since we have so many events in the first six months of the new year, we have decided to schedule our annual sightseeing cruise luncheon in the fall (September 2017). This cruise will originate out of Clearwater on the yacht named Sensation. It will include an upscale lunch buffet. ROMEO members will travel to Clearwater on a bus that seats at least 53. Music for dancing or just listening will be provided by the ROMEO Club.

Saturday, October 14th: Annual ROMEO Picnic at Heritage Pines (Rain Date of Sunday, October 15th). Open to all H.P. residents. This event is now being moved into the October timeframe since the rain date. The contractor was very late in starting construction on the new pavilion. Also, the weather will be less humid and many of our members should be back from their summer homes to attend this event. Music will be provided by our favorite All Shook Up lead singer Artie.

November 5th: Turkey Trot Dinner/Dance. Open to all H.P. Residents. The reason we are including this is that we had to set the date now to ensure we get the PAC room since things fill up fast around the holidays. So, since this is our most significant event of the year, please mark your calendars now

for Sunday, November 5th, starting at 5 p.m.

April 1st: ROMEO FREE Breakfast Meeting for March (Members Only). This breakfast buffet was paid for by the club and was free to all of our members to thank them for participating in our Club events this year. The breakfast was very well attended by our ROMEO members. Of course, since it was on April Fools Day, everyone thought we were playing a trick on them; but, they were pleasantly surprised when they came to the breakfast and found out it was truly free. Breakfast line servings started at 9 a.m. and our monthly meeting began after everyone had finished their breakfast. We had three new members inducted into the club this month as follows: Bill Mammen, Charlie Matella and Fred Ballmann. This gives us a total of 210 members. Each of them gave a short talk about themselves and Bill received his ROMEO hat and shirt. Charlie and Fred received their ROMEO hats and will receive their ROMEO shirts next month.

April 9: ROMEO Bocce Tournament at Heritage Pines. This was managed by Jeff Mariano and Mike Kienzle. We had the 32 players required for the tournament which is the total that our two Bocce courts can accommodate at one time. The cost to play was the same as last year ($5 per person). The Bocce rules and team assignments were provided to all the players on March 29th. The tournament started at 10:45 a.m.; so, most players were there before 10:30 a.m. to get their name tags and playing instructions. The tournament ended at 1:00 p.m and monetary prizes were presented to the first ($100) and second ($60) place teams as shown below:

The weather was picture perfect; the temperature was around 70 degrees with no humidity. Everyone said they had a great time and are looking forward to our next Bocce Tournament.

breakfast. Our speaker this month was Tim Gorske who is a member of the Club. Tim presented a slide show entitled Made In America. He believes strongly that all things should be made in America and shipped with a USA label. For example, Tim talked about being involved in the startup of a new brand of pre-engineered steel buildings which are still being built in Pittsburgh and are being sold worldwide and being shipped from the U.S. of A. Tim had a power point presentation and lots of neat pictures. The ROMEO Club wants to thank Tim for this excellent presentation and encourages other Club members to come forward and present their experiences to our Club.

Please contact me at [email protected] if you or anyone you know would be willing to provide us with a learning experience like Tim did.

Sunshine Committee

Our Sunshine Committee is responsible for sending out condolence and get well cards. We only sent out one get well cards this month. We had a request from one of our members, who is currently in an assisted living facility, for a new ROMEO hat since his was misplaced when he moved from his home in Heritage Pines to this facility in Land o’ Lakes. We provided this new hat to him and, he in turn, sent us a very nice note thanking us for it. We hope all our members will keep us posted when they know of any ROMEO member or ROMEO relative that should be receiving a card. Send your info to our ROMEO Secretary (Skip Scott) at [email protected].

Genealogy research and/or DNA testing is used to locate family hidden for decades by adoption practices designed to hide identities.

Not all episodes end with happiness and instant family, however. Often, a baby was given up for adoption because the parent was too young to care for a child. Sometimes, a child finds a parent after they have died. And, sometimes, forgiveness is difficult or the reunion was less than joyful. But it's real, as are many of our own stories.

In the HP Genealogy Club, we are learning techniques to discover our roots and preserve our family history. All are welcome to join us on the second Saturday of each month, 1:30-3:30 p.m., Magnolia Room. For more information, contact Sherry Churchill at [email protected]

GENEALOGY cont’d Lots of strikes...lots of prizes...and lots of fun took place at The ToyMakers Bowling Party Fundraiser in March. Thanks to all who bowled and helped to raise lots of money for this wonderful organization. And a "special thank you" to our own HP ToyMakers and The Angels In The Pines for their raffle donations. The ToyMakers Workshop is very grateful and appreciative of everyone's generosity.

The Toymakers "masterboxed" 16,000 toys!!! What does that mean? It means that several volunteers sorted 80 toys into 200 boxes. They are now ready for the next visit to deliver to the nine different locations/hospitals that receive our toys. 5,000 toys get delivered each visit. Next visit will be in May.

Annual Spring Picnic was held on Saturday, April 8th. A new record attendance was set this year. It was great to see all neighbors enjoying each other's company prior to the seasonal resident's migration back north.

The weather cooperated, as it was a beautiful day for our special event. Games included a putting and chipping contest and corn toss. Prizes were awarded to the winners. We also held a 50/50 drawing with the proceeds to be used to buy flags for our mail boxes to honor our veterans on Memorial Day.

The village concluded their farewells to the seasonal residents at Tuesday's music night April 11th with our send-off song of “Happy Trails”.

Other accomplishments of Pine Grove Village this past year include the painting of the exteriors of our villas, establishing a Roof Reserve, doing a soft clean on our roofs, with the hopes they will last longer, trying to improve our irrigation system and replacing sod where needed.

Regarding the roof reserve, please understand that each owner is putting just $10/month into the fund. The board added another $9,000 two years ago due to savings in changing lawn care companies. Nothing has been added since except for the monthly amount we all pay into the fund. All the roof money that was in General Reserve was transferred to the Roof Reserve at our board meeting on April 11, 2017. When roofs are replaced in approximately ten years, each owner will receive approximately $1,200 toward their new roof. In the meantime, if the board has an excess of funds, they may add to the reserve. However, with costs of other needs going up, we do not forsee an excess of funds. Another option would be for residents to vote to increase the amount of money they put in the reserve each month.

I would like to thank everyone in Pine Grove Village for all they do in helping to make Heritage Pines a wonderful place to live. A special thanks to Barbara Fullerton for keeping us organized and active. Thanks to Terri Delaney, our village manager, for guiding us through some difficult situations.

Here's wishing everyone a

wonderful summer!

At the New Pavilion

Friday, May 21st, 2017Meet and Greet at 4:00 p.m.,

Dinner (Menu to be determined) at 5:00 p.m.

Information to follow – Mark your calendar. This will be our last Pine Meadow Dinner before the summer break (June, July and August). Dinners will resume in September. Safe journey to all our neighbors heading north.

Reminder: We will be holding a 50/50 drawing. Also, don't forget to wear you name tags! (Call Diane to order if you don't have one).

Pine Meadow Village

Congratulations Pine Meadow Village Residents! Our Village raised a total of $762.00 for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. One of our residents, Janette Pauley, chaired this very successful event. We would like to extend a special thank you to AJ Reichardt and her volunteers for making seven beautiful baskets to represent our village at the February 25th Fund Raising Auction, as well as to Mary Christianson for also donating a basket for the event. Great job ladies, and thank you residents for coming through with your generous donations!

At our April meeting, Terry Lucas welcomed new residents Dana and Charlie Rodriguez.

Our monthly Village dinner will be held on April 15, 2017 at Chefs of Napoli. Our May dinner will be held at HP. If you have any restaurant suggestions, please give Terry Lucas a call or bring them to the May 8th meeting.

For all of you who have been procrastinating about purchasing a Village cookbook, you are now in luck as the cookbooks have been reduced to $5.00. If you are interested in purchasing one please give Barbara a call at: 727-233-2381.

On June 11th, the Village will be spending the afternoon at the Spring Hill Bowling Alley. The cost is only $6.00 for two games as well as the rental shoes. After bowling everyone is invited to stay and have dinner at the bowling alley grill.

At the April Village Board Meeting, the Pasco County Sheriff's department were our guest speakers. They addressed the illegal activity on the land behind our Village and what we as a village can do to help report what is going on. Between the ATV riders and the gun shootings, it's time to put a stop to these activities for the safety of all our neighbors.

VILLAGE ATTIC

PINES GLEN VILLAGE

The village attic has been in existence for the past 16 years. Your neighbor's have stored items to lend when company comes into town. We need to replenish our supplies and ask that residents store these items. If we are unable to do this, the attic will not be able to continue. Please let us know if you would be able to help. Any questions, please call Marcia Gerber 819-1662 or Betty Plante 863-8462

“When I first went to Dr. Higgins I was impressed with his willingness to listen to me and understand my lifestyle. I appreciated that he wasn't one to rush into a surgical solution. Although he did tell me that surgery was in my future, he was willing to use less invasive techniques to give me more time. Dr. Higgins periodically monitored my condition and informed me when he thought it was time to do the surgery…I am so thankful to be the recipient of the God-given knowledge, skills, talents and compassion that Dr. Higgins used to give me back my life.” – Debbie O.
