communities along the hudson River, upstream

from glens falls and west of lake george, have joined together to celebrate their shared history along the earliest route into the heart of the adirondack wilderness.

from the great falls of the hudson, upriver to the dramatic hudson River gorge, the stream tumbles over falls and rapids, past dramatic cliffs of magnificent marble impregnated with sharp chunks of gneiss, then slows to flow easily through ice meadows, kept perpetually open by the annual scouring of spring ice floes. the adirondacks were the first area to be recognized by NYS legislation as being “forever Wilderness”.

as a legacy project from the hudson,

financial support is credited to the towns of bolton, chester, corinth, hadley, hague, horicon, Johnsburg, lake george, lake luzerne, Queensbury, Stony creek, thurm

and the village of lake george. one of the goals in preparing this map

has been to create a teaching tool for local comm

included in the inspiration for this project is our wish to extend a sincere appreciation for the contributions and achievem

ents by henry hudson (1565-1611), Seneca Ray Stoddard (1843-1917) and verplanck colvin (1847-1920). Stoddard and colvin both travelled extensively through the adirondack W

through landscape photography and survey m

these visual records were instrumental

in shaping public opinion about tourism

, leading to the 1892 “forever W
