How to Read a Comic

Panels are framesthat each contain onesegment of the action.Panels can be any shapeor size. Read the panelsfrom left to right,top to bottom.

Gutters are the spacesbetween panels. This iswhere the reader must imagine the action frompanel to panel.

Word balloons containcharacter dialogue. Thetail of the bubble pointsto the speaker.Sometimes differentcolors, shapes, or fontsare used to show thepersonality of a char-acter.

Slow down! Read both the text and the pictures. Think about what is happening between the panels.

Captions usuallycontain narration butsometimes dialogue or other text information.
