Español I• Full year program.• Same as Spanish I at Downers Grove North.

– Our classes are shorter in lengeth than DGN.– Test or Quiz each week; Semester Exam = Early January;

Final Exam = May / June.• Focus:

– Correct pronunciation, comprehension, and usage of key vocabulary and grammar.

– Proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and communicating at beginning level Spanish.

– Common Spanish cultural customs. • ¡Avancemos!:

– Student resources: Textbook & Workbook (Cuaderno: practica por niveles)

– On-line resources (book, @ home tutore, etc.): classzone.com

• Midterm (January) & Final (End of May).

Grading & Advancing to Level 2• Quarter Grades:

– Grade breakdown: 45% Tests, 25% Qizzes & Other Assessments, 30% Speaking Tests.

• Advancing to Level 2 & DGN Course Credit:‒ Based on teacher recommendation.‒ DGN requests recommendations in January / February.‒ Herrick Foreign Language teachers make necessary

changes to recommendation in the Spring, based on student progress.

‒ DGN guides us to recommend students for level II who consistently maintain a C or better overall grade, and regularly earn A’s and/or B’s on tests / quizzes.

‒ To get DGN credit students must not only pass Spanish I with a C or better, they must also earn a C or better on the midterm and final exams.

Homework & Review• Daily homework (Approximately 30 min.)

– Generally, for a completion grade.– Late work accepted anytime, unless otherwise stated.

• Daily study (15 – 30 min. in addition to daily homework)– Review notes, handouts, and text explanations.– Examine homework assignments to review and self – assess

progress.– Practice with exercises from the book.– Visit websites that offer practice and review. (See links on my

classroom website)– Go over flashcards.– Drill a friend.– Teach the vocab and grammar

to someone at home.– Come in for help and review.– Utilize strategies that fit your learning style.

Language Proficiency

• It takes 70 exposures to internalize a new vocabulary word in a second language.

• It takes over 700 hours of language use to become proficient in a language.
