Ingredients of Musical Success by the Music Faculty

This half term, students in Years 7 and 8 have been learning about the elements of music. The classes

have been asked to memorise the twelve elements in order, along with their definitions.

The musical elements have been likened to the ingredients of a cake. With that in mind, the entire class

(or classes) that obtain full marks will each be rewarded with a cupcake, as well as House Points.

Please support your child so that he/she can become one of the winners!

The Brilliant Club by the Sixth Form Team

We were delighted to put another group of students through the Brilliant Club

Scholars Programme for the third year running. The Brilliant Club’s aim is to help

students access highly selective universities. Students work in small groups with a

PhD tutor on a dissertation style essay, which then gets marked at undergraduate

level allowing them to develop transferable skills for university and beyond.

This year’s programme launched with a trip to SOAS, which is part of the University

of London. The cohort then worked with their tutor Becky, who studied at Imperial

College and is now doing her PhD through UCL. The students worked on the

challenging thesis “How dangerous to nutrition and poverty related disease is

climate change going to be in Malawi in the next 50 years?”

Our students: Zoe, Kajus, Peter, Nikolay, Nigel and

Ema, all did exceptionally well achieving Firsts and

2:1s across the board — a real testament to their

hard work. To celebrate their success, they

attended a graduation at Jesus College, University

of Oxford, where they also got a tour of the

university and had lunch in the beautiful dining hall.

The six students are now working on their UCAS

applications and highlighting the skills they gained

from the experience to show the universities that

they are first class candidates.

Ema, who achieved an amazing First in her thesis, said “My research skills were enhanced by the opportunity to participate in

the Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme. I gained true insight into the style of writing at university level.” We look forward to

our current and future Sixth Form students participating more and more in exciting university events, like The Brilliant Club.

Year 11 Choices Evening | Wednesday 15th November | 6.00 - 8.00pm We invite all Year 11 students and parents, from inside and outside the academy, to the Hertswood Academy

Choices Evening. You will have a chance to meet teachers of the many Sixth Form courses, discuss what you’ll

learn, and the grades required to be accepted onto the courses.
