Why HEVC and 4K Together? 6
• HDTV and H.264/AVC
• H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding): defined in the 2000s for
HDTV compression
• HDTV 1080i requires around 8Mbps
• UltraHD/4K
• x8 more pixels than HDTV
• Potentially 60+Mbps with H.264/AVC
• New compression required: H.265/HEVC is here and is a
MUST for UltraHD/4K

Is UHD/4K the only role for HEVC?
• NO!
• HEVC:
• Halves bandwith compared to H.264/AVC for all
formats
• Halves transmission costs
• HEVC in meant also for:
• HDTV Broadcast
• HDTV streaming on IP networks / telco networks

4K TV: Status and Next Steps

UHD/4K: Larger picture
9
• UHD: More pixels for more details
HDTV: 1920 x 1080
UHD/4K: 3840 x 2160
• Wider viewing angle for an immersive experience
Viewing angle: 60°instead of 30°
•But is this enough to create a market shift?

UHD: improved motion
• The larger the screen, the more pictures you need!
• 30 frames per second (fps) is not enough
• Shutter time when shooting movement is critical
• 60 fps is a minimum already in HDTV
• Up to 120fps is considered for future systems

UHD: Better Colors
• Current TV color system (BT 709) was born in 1993 and was meant for CRTs
(Cathodic Ray Tubes)
• New TV color space (BT2020) has been defined for UHD and flat displays
