Steinbeck’s first description of Curley’s wife. P. X (mine is p52 but yours might be different – CHECK) ‘Both men glanced up, for the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off.’

‘Glanced up’ - verb – suggests she has power – hierarchical ? Power is a central theme in the novel. Foreshadows that she abuses her power to make herself feel better. Also suggests that she is angelic (at least to Lennie)‘sunshine’ – noun – connotations of life, warmth, comfort and hope. All things that G and L want but are, in the end, denied. Again – could link t C’s wife as almost other-worldly or angelic – at least to L. ‘Cut off’ – she blocks their path and their chance at a life together. We know that she is the reason that their dreams will not be realized. These adjectives are Mono-syllabic – as f they cut into the sentence – short sharp and change the tone – goes from warm to cold. Traces the novel as by the end of the novel they return to the setting but the sun has gone – there is no more warmth or hope left.

(I can’t do arrows on ppt so that is why mine is set out like this – choose a format that works for you)
